BIG LINE RIDING MIKEY “the real deal” WITLOX A group of us had planned on doing a really big tour of the sisters and were going to start hiking that next morning at 3 am. It’s a mission I have been wanting to do forever. I was in bed at like 10:00. The next thing I know my homie Jamie Barrett comes crashing into my room screaming, “WAKE UP, WAKE UP, we’re goin’ cat skiing,!!” I just thought he was wasted and trying to get me to go party. I told him to “fuck off.” He kept yelling at me to wake up. Eventually he explained that Ryan Creary, and Ryan Stewart were in town with backcountry magazine and were doing an article on the slack country at island lake lodge. They wanted us to ride with them and take some photos. Once I came to, and realized that Jamie wasn’t drunk and full of shit, I was super stoked! Except that I had to bail on the boys who were going up the sisters the next morning. Most of them would’ve done the same... Sorry boys. Jamie and I went out that next morning with the backcountry boys and had a sic day. The guides at island lake were telling us that the snow conditions were good and they secured our thoughts on the safety of the backcountry. At the end of the day the Creary asked us if we would show them around the slack country at FAR the next day. Both Jamie and I were down for sure! I decide to take them to my favorite spot on the hill which is the new side. The next morning we started up th timber chair. As soon as we got to the top I could see the Mongolia head wall, and it was looking prime! When we got off the timber chair, Creary asked me, “what should we ride?” I pointed at the Mongolia headwall and said, “How about that?” Everyone looked at each other and 8
hesitated a bit, but eventually we were all on board. When we got over to the spot we gave the two Ryan’s a radio, and Jamie and I began hiking. On the way up we took some time to check the snow conditions. If you get caught in an avalanche in that whole area you are gonna get swept off of a cliff, so it had to be safe! The conditions were awesome and getting better as we got closer to the line. We were totally amped to ride it. Finally we reached the top of the poop chutes, which was our intended descent. As we stood on top of our initial line I looked around and saw that the super pooper, one line over, was calling my name! I have been dreaming about riding the super pooper for three years and I realized that this was my opportunity. Looking over at Jamie I said, “I should probably ride that” as I pointed to the gnarly line next door. Jamie wasn’t quite as amped as I was to head over there so he decided to stick to the plan. I hiked up to the top to scope it out. When I got there I threw some snowballs down the slope and sessed the scene. I even hiked into the line a bit to check the snow pack. If it was icy I was heading back to the poop chutes. When I got in there everything seemed to be telling me to go for it. The snow was awesome and I felt confident. So I made up my
mind, I was going for it. Jamie dropped the poop chutes first and it looked so good! Now it was my turn. As I was talking with Creary over the radio, I tried to explain to him what line I had in mind. The boys at the bottom were having a hard time picturing what the hell I was talking about. From their perspective, the super pooper doesn’t look ridable, but from my perspective I could see everything. There are two chutes that you have to traverse through to get into it. You cant see them from the bottom, but they are shaped like half pipes. The face that you have to cross in between chutes is on a steep slant towards death. Once you get out of that first chute you have to shred lightly when you’re going across the death slope, until you get into the next chute. Thats the zone where nothing can go wrong or its game over for sure! Once you enter that first “halfpipe” chute you are pretty much committed... you gotta make it happen.
years and everything had finally come together at this moment. My response to him was, “I am going to ride this line whether take pictures of it or not.” So thats what I did! I strapped up and went for it. Apparently as I was traversing through the sketchy chutes in the top section the Ryan’s at the bottom were freaking out! They had no idea how I was going to pull this off or where I was going. They thought I was in deep shit! What they didn’t realize was I have been scoping this line for a long time and I knew exactly what I was doing. As I made my way down they saw how it was coming together and couldn’t believe what they were watching. I rode that thing as if no one else was around. I didn’t stop and think about the photos or anything. Thats the way I wanted to ride it. It was just me and my line. Needless to say the boys were stoked when I got to the bottom!!
After realizing where I was planning to ride. Creary piped up over the radio, “You don’t have to do this man, you don’t have to risk your neck for us!! We only met yesterday.” Almost like he thought I was taking one for the team. At this point I was riding this line for me! I have been scoping the super pooper for three ISSUE 1

I have had the privilege to hang out and ride with “Tha Godfather” for the past four years. The man has pushed me to do things on my board that I would have never dreamed of doing myself. Stefan is the most passionate, sincere snowboarder I have ever met—Not to mention he rips! Everyone that knows Stefan is better off. Luckily I was able to get inside his head and record some of his thoughts. Where do you live in Sweden? Älvängen, it’s 30km from Gothenburg. How long have you been snowboarding? Uh, my first year riding was the first year I came to Fernie. It was in 98 - 99. Before that I just rented a board. You have progressed a bit since then. Yeah, I started snowboarding when I was 29. You can go a long way if you love something, you know? What is it you love about snowboarding? Snowboarding for me is like art. When you are going out and doing big lines it’s like you are painting the mountain. So basically it is your canvas? Ya, exactly. You can be creative on a snowboard. It’s up to your mind what you can do, you set the boundaries. Where is your favorite place to ride? Thats pretty easy for me, Fernie. I also really like Revy a lot. Riksgränsen (Northern Sweden) is a super rad mountain outside of Canada. It is an awesome hill! How long have you been coming to Fernie for the winter? Since 98-99, so—15 seasons. Damn, thats a long time! Why do you keep coming back? You know its Fernie that I love, the people and what’s going on there. It was one thing that I saw in Fernie in my first season that I can still FERNIE
remember. One day I was at the aquatic center, and I saw this older lady that went to the trampoline (diving board) and did a front flip dive into the pool. I thought—whoa, these are cool people living here! I wanna grow old like that! It just got stuck in my mind. What’s your favorite place to ride at FAR? Ooooohh—that’s a tough one! It’s definitely starting on timber and going up Mitchy’s, or Big Bang to start with. Then up the White Pass to hit the Knot Chutes...and back up to Curry to hit the 1,2,3’s. After that, taking the Polar Peak lift to hit one of the chutes up there is rad. Then over to Lone Fir, or something. What about back-country spots? I feel the most safe on Mammoth head and in Mongolia. Sib Ridge is my go to. Do you have a favorite Fernie memory? Oh man, so many—Mogul Smoker in minus 35! That was something else, I can’t believe that thing went down when it was that cold! Did you have some party favors? Uhh, it was minus 35 and we were high as usual. Haha, we were partying really hard! So how old are you now? Turning 45 this winter. Can you believe that, 45! How does your age affect riding? I’m not as flexible, haha. I think that is the worst
thing. I am staying in pretty good shape. I work out a lot and I feel really good. It is important to have strong muscles, but when you get older you gotta stretch. What drives you to keep progressing? Since I started riding, I feel like I get better every season. I notice the progression, and still feel that every season. I really love it!! Riding makes me happy and being around people with energy makes me want to push myself even more. Do you have any tricks to stomp, or lines to slay this season? This year my goal is to get on the podium at the competition in Riksgränsen. A Lot of famous riders go there. I was so fucking close last year. I wasn’t even a whole point away from placing— a hundredth of a point. I was so fucking close! I also want to make a movie of us riding this year, and then when we get really old we can look back at it and laugh. Hahaha. So you are basically gonna charge like you do every winter? Yeah, probably. Ha, right on! Are you going to enter any comps in Canada this year? Uhhh, Wrangle the Chutes is gonna be a four star event this year. I am planning on entering that.
Travis Rice is awesome, of course. I also look up to Jeremy Jones. Any reason in particular? Because they are fucking so sic! When I first started riding I looked up to Johan Olofsson. I was watching him in TB5 in ‘95. He was going super fast and riding super big lines. He was really famous and people were like, Holy Shiiiiitttttt! What kind of tunes are you listening to? Ohhh, lately its been all the way Early Man! So you are gonna shred your face off to Early Man this season? Yeah, thats probably what is gonna happen. How amped are you for this season? Ha, now that I only have twelve days of work left I’m getting really stoked! It isn’t just the riding that I’m excited for, I’m stoked to see the boys. All those guys out there in Fernie are my best friends. When we ride together we push each other and progress together. That shit is so awesome! Sooo, how is Vanessa (girlfriend) doing? She’s good. She is making some meatballs. Awesome!
Do you have a favorite rider, or video? My favorite riders would be Nicolas Müller, Jake Blauvelt— who else is riding really sic? 13

PRETTY FUCKING TASTY BIG BANG BAGELS Yo whats good guys. Big Red here and I’m gonna tell you all about one of the tightest spots to grab some grub before you head up to the mountain in Fernie, BC. Located at 5th St and 2nd Ave directly diagonal from the museum is the freshest little bagel shop you’re ever gonna see.
As soon as you step inside you are greeted with the fresh smell of bagels cookin’ and coffee brewin’. Now personally I’m not a big coffee fan so I went straight for the grub. Big-Bang-Bagels (BBB for short) is one of the few breakfast places in Fernie and honestly I don’t know why anyone would bother looking for another one. BBB originally started out about 7 years ago when Carolyn Doyle who is the owner started baking and selling bagels at the Fernie Farmers Market. She discovered there was actually a huge demand for bagels in Fernie and she quickly found success selling her baked goods. In 2008 she was selling her bagels out of a pizza shop in Fernie
14
before finally moving to their own location in 2009. Ever since they have been a staple in Fernie. At BBB they hand-make all their bagels from scratch every morning and combine fresh and wholesome ingredients which is why they have such a great distinct flavor. My favorite bagel is the everything bagel. Topped with all kinds of seeds as well as dried onion it is a one way ticket to Flavor Town. Grab a B-B-BLT on an everything bagel and its an explosion of flavor in your mouth. If you’re ever in Fernie this is one place you don’t want to miss. Its pretty cheap staying under $10 for pretty much anything off the menu, its well worth your money!

Wassup yo. The name's Victor Uzunow, but everyone calls me Big Red. If you’ve never been to Fernie before, I know how you feel. This is a story about my first time heading over there and let me tell you, it was a hell of a time.
Austin and I had just gotten back from an overnight stay in Banff to ride and party there. We had just arrived back in Calgary and it was about 7 PM. We had to leave asap since a three hour drive was ahead of us. We stopped by my place first and I quickly packed some fresh clothes; Austin did the same at his own place. We finally set off on the road. It was a pretty typical drive. We listened to pop punk and rap. I napped for a short time while Auzzy powered down the road. We finally arrived around 1 am and it was dark as shit. We didn’t know where anything was and actually drove right past the town while trying to text Justus. (He was wasted with his mates. He finally replied with a place for us to park near his coordinates. We were supposed to stay on someone’s couch that night but just in case we had brought a futon that a friend had let us borrow. It quickly became clear to us that we would be sleeping in the back of Austin’s Denali. It was 1:00 AM and freezing cold outside. and We had to set up a bed in the back of the truck and try to get some sleep to go riding tomorrow.
FERNIE
It took us long enough but we finally managed to move enough shit to the front seats to set up the mattress somewhat flat. We finally lay down to sleep and Justus finally shows up. He's feeling pretty good, and immediately hands out (Lucky) beers. It was straight out of a movie, I'm telling you. We chat for a bit and he's laughing at our set up. He leaves and comes back with one sleeping bag and a bottle of water. Bear in mind, being the geniuses we are, we brought barely any water and it was gone by now. Soon after we finally get to sleep while Justus heads back over to his buddies place to crash. We wake up to the sound of a train. It was like 100 feet away from us, the loudest sound you ever heard. Damn this town is crazy. It’s 8 am and it is absolutely freezing. The truck has been off all night, and all I had to keep me warm is a tiny blanket. Auzzy and I get up and put on our snow gear. (1) I brush my teeth cuz I gotta keep those pearly whites, you know. Dental health ain’t a joke.

Justus shows up soon and we decide on where to meet on the mountain. The Timber chair at 11:00. Austin and I gotta eat though so we set out to walk around the town. We were starving, so literally anything to eat would be tight. I spot a shop called Big Bang Bagels. Little did I know that this little bagel shop would be the dopest. I got something called a B-B-BLT bagel and damn it was amazing! I ordered a second one to go and we head out. As we leave I noticed a group of four bangin blondes walking into the shop. It was 11:30 and we had changed our meet time to 12:30. Only a half day of riding today. Why pay $20 extra for one hour of riding? Auzzy and I grab lift tickets and head to Timber. As we walk to the chair the same four blondes are there, still lookin’ fine as ever and all geared up to ride. Justus is nowhere in sight. We finally decide to just head up. We get on the chair and actually see Justus right behind us. What are the odds of that? We meet up at the top. (2) I finally get to meet his buddies: Davis, Stefan, and Bradley. I can already tell I’m gonna have trouble keeping up with these guys. I'm not that great of a rider, just average. We all set off together and they take a strange path through the woods. I follow until we get to a little open shack built from fallen branches. (3) The boys like to smoke before they ride. I take photos. After they are done we set off again. Damn these guys are too quick. I soon lose sight of them and they aren’t the waiting type so I just split.

I spent the next couple hours alone exploring the mountain and we met up at The Rusty Edge around 2:00 to eat. After food and beers, we head up one more time to catch the last chair. Auzzy gets lost along the way, but I managed to keep up with Justus and his gang. They took me through some sick hidden trails through the woods. I got to watch them try out tricks. I just filmed since I’d just embarrass the shit outta myself if I actually tried, haha. We meet up with Auzzy at the bottom as Justus’ gang splits. The three of us drive back to Davis’ place to shower. We get in using the boot key. Davis is working at the tattoo shop. We all shower up and its about 6:00 PM at this point.
“I can already tell I’m gonna have trouble keeping up with these guys.”
Auzzy is late for his tattoo appointment with Davis. It's chill, he’s not busy anyways. We head to the shop and everyone’s talking about Stefan and that it's his birthday today. (4) Guess there’s gonna be some partying going on. You’ll read about the tattoo later but it was sick. As we finish up there we head back to Davis’ house. Soon his buddies start arriving. These guys live there and they’re all like 30+. They’ve been livin’ the Fernie life for a while, and it shows. They got no cares in the world for anything but the ride life. The chillest crowd I’ve ever seen. Only one chick showed up though, haha. I talked to Bradley for a bit and we bonded over our back injuries. He dipped soon after.

It's actually Dre Day in Fernie today, which essentially means its hip-hop night. We head down to a local bar/club soon after and its mostly guys again, but there were some decent looking girls. Auzzy says the same four blondes were there and apparently he danced with one. I don’t remember it. I danced for a bit too, but the DJ wasn’t playin’ anything too hot so I just chilled. Everyone goes back to Davis’ house around 1 am and I’m pretty tired at this point. I haven’t had a good nights rest in 3 days and I need a good rest. I’m also starving. Auzzy and I hit up a nearby pizza shop that was still open and I grab us a couple slices. This was a good idea as the pizza tasted like heaven. So its everyone left chillin at the house and soon after all of Justus’ buddies leave to go back to the club. Austin, Justus, and I stay at the house. We are too burned out to join. Slowly we all start to fall asleep while we were chatting about random stuff. I wake up at some point and I see Justus sleeping next to me on the sofa which somehow unfolded into a bed while I was sleeping. Auzzy was asleep on the other couch. I also remember Davis leaving pretty early to hit the mountain. Once we get up, we check the weather report. 40 cm of snow had fallen! Powder heaven awaits us on the mountain. We got dressed and left. We stopped for breakfast at Big Bang Bagels again. I grabbed a couple B-B-BLTs. You’ll never guess who we saw there again… the four blondes. We don’t have time to chat though. We drive up to the lift and it’s probably around 10:00 AM. We cop some lift tickets and ride up the mountain. We just happened to run into Justus’ buddies. Damn this place sure is small. We follow them for a bit through some fresh powder to some hidden lines. As usual they vanish into the whiteness. It's just Austin and I now. We spend the whole day riding except for a lunch break. We ran into two of the cute blondes there, but not the one I had my eyes on. This has to be some sort of joke at this point right? We were supposed to meet up with Justus but his phone's dead. We spend the rest of the day riding and finally get a call from Justus to meet at the bottom in a bit. We finish riding and sure enough he’s there waiting. Its just the three of us and we’re tired, but satisfied from the day. We agree to grab some A&W. After we’ve all eaten our fill we split. Justus wanted to chill in Fernie a bit longer. We wanted to head home since we’ve got another three hour car ride ahead of us. We get back to Calgary around 9:00 PM. It was not your usual trip, but it was a good one. Definitely gotta go back soon. VICTOR UZUNOW

In any small town, community is everything. Local art and music can brighten anyones mood and add so much sweetness to the lives of all the individuals involved. We are going to dive into one of our good buddy Davis’ tattoo work. Long live art, and long live the art of the shred.
28
ISSUE 1
Davis is an artist at Poison Apple Tattoo located in the only town ever. He’s been tattooing for three years. He fell in love with it after moving to Fernie from the states for the love of the shred. His traditional yet strange style is fuckin’ cool, which is why I decided to get my first super fuckin’ cool tattoo from him. After a day of riding we headed down to the shop, a stop at the liquor store was essential for the sake of the hangs. We rolled up to the sweet little shop which was decked out in decks and skulls, the shit I like. We cracked open some beers after I confirmed the design. I was really hyped on the design, and let Davis work his sweet magic.
FERNIE
Exploring the shop was fun, the design of each room reflected the style of the shop and the artists working there. When the stencil was ready and placed on my shoulder blade (not a bad placement for a first tattoo I think) I layed face down on the table ready for the deed to be done. While the tatt was going down the boys rigged up a straw for me after dismantling a pen so I could still sip out of my beer lol. It worked alright, took my mind off of the needles in my back. I spent most of the experience facing the floor, because of my placement choice however. It was fine dough, too bad I couldn’t laugh at most of the jokes. Gotta lay still. A couple strays rolled in throughout proving how open and friendly the environment really is at the shop. Being with rad company was dope. Davis was so easy to work with. The guys were jokin’ and a good time was had by all. Good vibes were very present; Good vibes are always very present in Fernie. After a couple hours of shooting the shit, it was done. I got my first tattoo! Super stoked on the piece! Not a bad way to live, eh? Shred the day away, and tattoo at night. I can see what Davis finds so appealing about the idea. We kept the party going after and continued on with the rad hangs!
29
“Good vibes are always very present in Fernie. Yo Davis, tell us a little bit about yourself? "My name is Davis Fultz and I in Fernie. I grew up loving the mountains and anything artistic. I have been lucky enough to have my life filled with friends, family, skateboarding, snowboarding, and art. I was drawn to B.C. where I studied blacksmithing, along with drawing, painting and sculpture. I eventually found myself here. I established my apprenticeship at Poison Apple Tattoo Co. working alongside Liam Monahan and owner Becka McDonald. I feel that I have found my true creative calling and I always hope my clients are leaving the shop with a smile, because that's what tattooing brings to me." AUSTIN JANSEN

...the day Hot Dog Day is by far the funnest day in Fernie. I’m not talking about 80’s day, or Retro weekend, or whatever silly shit RCR came up with. We are talking about Hot Dog Day Motherfuckers!
FERNIE
33
Hot Dog Day comes once a year on the first Wednesday in April. At this time of year, the days are getting longer and the ski season is nearly over. The coming of summer is as inevitable as the job search that awaits most Fernie ski bums. It's kinda sad, but on Hot Dog Day nobody gives a fuck about that. Damn near everyone in Fernie takes part in the shinanigans; busting out their liquor stained outfits from the year before. There are many familiar faces, and they are all getting rowdy. The best part of Hot Dog Day is that everyone is there for the exact same reason. It's a celebration bitches!
the
To kick off the festivities, Hotdoggers from near and far gather together for a boozy, boozy, breakfast. Breakfast is important, and on Hot dog day this is especially true. Your body is going to soak up a lot of booze and drugs throughout the day, so it is best to eat something early. You wont be hungry later on. Liquor, budd, acid, and scooby snacks were on the menu this year. Menthol slims for smokin'. Good thing I went to Timmies before I got there. After breakfast is ingested, we ramp things up a little. Flip cup and will help us get where we need to be. By now if you think you're ok to drive, then you aren't trying hard enough. Don't worry about it, someone else can drive. It's about time to get ready to go! I have to leave my keys at here. HOT DOG HINT: Leave your car keys, wallet, phone, and important items at home. It is really easy to lose shit on Hot Dog day. One year I lost the only set of car keys I had. No good. I would also suggest keeping a pocket inventory, especially when LSD is involved. 34
ISSUE 1
Once we get to the ski hill, the hot dog party starts coming together. Those that didn't make it to breakfast are here now. We load our pockets with goodies, and strap in. Florescent suited freaks are flyin' left, right. We join in for a couple hot laps. At the chair we bump into some familiar faces. These guys are some real sick fuckers, but they know how to get down. We head to the trees seeking shelter so we can breathe Coke and MDMA in our noses. Apparently when you mix them together it's called a cheesequake. I would have called it a jiffy because it felt like shoving a marker up your nose. Oh we flyin' now. Move bitch get out'the way. We are headed to the sun pit with our shiny new buzz.
FERNIE
35
The Sun pit is the spot to be in the afternoon. The best part is when you come howling down wallaby, and come round dat corner dere. The crowd is hootin' and hollerin' as you hit the booter. The jump is a little twangy. My first go'round it set me on my ass; Banged my ring real good. I needed a time out before I headed to the pit. The stench of ganja came blasting through the 90's rock. It smelled exactly like the pit at a GWAR show. R.I.P. Oderus. The level of intoxication was on the rise. Everyone there was in their prime and soaking it in. The good old boys. I was so pumped to see Gigi! That guy is a boss!

"My stomach sounds like the hull of an old pirate ship"
After all that fun in the sun pit we look for our gear so we can head down to the base. This year the boys from Commit put on a stellar patio party at The Rusty Edge. They had a couple D.J.s on the deck and it was bumpin'! The party reached capacity quickly, and the line up was long. We decided to find another way in. First, we stopped for a cheesequake. Shnoooot! Now we are firing on all cylinders. We went around back and identified our opportunity. We must tunnel. Under the deck we go. Some fellow doggers on the inside provided cover and we were in like Flynn.
The patio was so much fun from what I can remember! This is when things started to get blurry. The last thing I remember was Bradley and I sitting in Tristan's parents backyard. Ruthless, Tristan's mom, came out and offered us a ride home. She is the best! We got dropped off at Brad's and played blow darts for the rest of the night. I'm not sure when we got home, but by that time I was like a helpless infant. The day after hot dog day was a little rough. It was fun to look at the footage from The Day. Luckily I didn't lose anything, except my mullet wig. My mouth tastes like cigs, and my stomach sounds like the hull of an old pirate ship. JUSTUS FRIESEN
