The CUSD Aviation is the result of a major partnership between the Compton Unified School District, Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum-‐Compton Airport and major supporters. The Academy Pathway is developed with college articulated curricula that is based on with the philosophy that students learn best by doing the following: something they are interested, when the curricula are both exciting and academically rigorous. CUSD Proposed Career Technical Education Course Descriptions AVIATION AEROSPACE PROGRAM Introduction to Flight Operations Course Description: This course provides students with an introduction to airport operations and operations management. Students will learn about the daily responsibilities of airport operations managers to include airfield inspections, aircraft ramp handling, passenger terminal operations, airport security and cargo handling. In addition the student will be introduced to airport licensing requirements, airport operational administration and performance and environmental planning factors to include noise abatement. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Introduction to Airport Operations Course Description: This course provides students with an introduction to airport operations and operations management. Students will learn about the daily responsibilities of airport operations managers to include airfield inspections, aircraft ramp handling, passenger terminal operations, airport security and cargo handling. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Private Pilot Aviation Ground School Course Description: Entry level course for commercial pilot training program. Covers basic aerodynamics, aircraft performance, Federal Aviation Regulations, aviation weather factors and cross country navigation procedures. Provides introductory material on radio navigation, radio communications procedures, human factors and aviation safety. Meets the preparation requirements for the FAA Private Pilot computerized knowledge examination. All training is conducted in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 61. Aerospace information and projects are also included in the curriculum. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Instrument Pilot Aviation Ground School Course Description: Provides academic background for Private Pilots preparing for the FAA Instrument Rating. Covers principles of instrument flight, aircraft performance, Federal Aviation Regulations, aviation weather factors and IFR cross country navigation procedures. Provides material on Instrument Approach Procedures, IFR operational procedures, human factors and aviation safety. All training is conducted in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 61. All flight training labs are conducted in accordance with an approved FAR Part 141 syllabus. Meets the preparation requirements for the FAA Instrument rating computerized knowledge examination. Aviation Pilot Training course. Federal Aviation Regulations require the training provided by this course as a prerequisite for the Instrument Pilot written exam. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course.

This course will cover the forces which generate and affect weather, weather systems, and aviation weather services and cross country weather planning procedures. The course will also provide detailed material on aviation weather hazards and aviation meteorological reports. Aerospace information and projects are also included in the curriculum. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Commercial Pilot Aviation Ground School Course Description: Provides academic background for Private Pilots preparing for the FAA Commercial Pilot license. Covers transport category aircraft performance considerations, advanced weight and balance, multi-‐engine aerodynamics, and Federal Aviation Regulations applicable to Commercial pilots. Meets the preparation requirements for the FAA Commercial Pilot computerized knowledge examination. PREREQUISITE: or current Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument rating. Students satisfying the Pilot Certificate prerequisite must present proof to the instructor at the first week of the course. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Aviation Navigation Course Description: This course provides academic background for pilots preparing for the FAA Commercial Pilot license and FAA Instrument rating. The course will cover basic visual navigation, instrument navigation, use of Global Positioning Systems and an introduction to Flight Management Computers. Current Private Pilot Certificate will be verified by the Instructor at the first class meeting. Aerospace and aerodynamics information and projects are also included in the curriculum. This is a 90 hour -‐ one semester course. Flight Instructor Ground School Description: This is course prepares the student to take the Fundamentals of Instructing and Flight/Ground Instructor FAA knowledge exams. The fundamentals of teaching, laws of learning, lesson plan preparation, and FAA regulations will be discussed. PREREQUISITE: Commercial Pilot Ground School.
