SENIOR CALDWELL READY TO LEAD DEFENSE

By Vinny Lavalsiti, UTEP Athletics Defensive back Josh Caldwell has been a consistent presence in the Miners’ secondary the last two seasons sizing up receivers in each of UTEP’s 23 games. The redshirt senior is now focusing on being a well-rounded leader in his final year with the program. Caldwell said the first steps toward being a leader is being communicative and holding teammates accountable. “First and foremost, trying to be more vocal,” Caldwell said. “Being a leader out there, you have to have everybody on the same page. And two, within film ses-

sions, not taking them so lightly. Making sure everybody’s paying attention and taking notes.” Caldwell earned the trust of his teammates through the work ethic he derived from growing up in Southern California, which has produced defensive back greats such as 49ers corner Richard Sherman – Caldwell’s NFL role model. Being raised in Long Beach and playing junior college ball at Cerritos College gave Caldwell his proverbial “dog mentality.” “(Growing up playing football in California) made me grind harder and turned me into a dog,” Caldwell said. “Going out there and competing every play because, you know, someone may be working harder or trying to be better than you, so you have to up the bar and just perform.”

In addition to his family, Caldwell’s hometown friends and teammates who excelled past Cerritos College at other Division I programs are the motivating factors in his last hoorah at UTEP and in his final effort to play professionally. “Seeing my friends that have overcome different obstacles to succeed in life making it to the next level,” Caldwell said. “I have friends who are in college and this is their last year too. And my family, just seeing what they went through to get me in the position I am today. It just pushes me to go harder and make something of myself.” Caldwell is coming off a successful junior campaign in which he started in all 11 games played last season. SENIOR CALDWELL READY TO LEAD DEFENSE 11 pass breakups, which also tied for the eighth-top total in school history. He added 52 tackles in which 36 of them were solo stops. Caldwell registered a season-high seven tackles in four games with the first being at Texas Tech, followed with a solid performance at FIU and in the Sun Bowl against LA Tech and Charlotte. During Caldwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sophomore season, his first in a UTEP uniform, he played in all 12 games, while making his first career start as a Miner at LA Tech. Caldwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first collegiate season at Cerritos College, he posted 40 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and an interception in all 10 games played.

While playing at La Miranda High School in Norwalk, Calif., Caldwell was a member of the CIF Championships and State Championship team as a senior.

He recorded 46 tackles with three forced fumbles and one interception, while helping the Matadors finish 13-3 and 6-0 in league play in 2015.

DIMEL KANSAS STATE ‘86 THIRD SEASON AT UTEP 40TH SEASON AS A COACH

Dana Dimel was named the 26th head coach in UTEP football history by Director of Athletics Jim Senter on Dec. 6, 2017. He enters his third season as UTEP head coach and his ninth season overall as a head coach in 2020. His first two seasons were all about laying the foundation for the revival of UTEP Football. In 2018, Dimel led the Miners to their first victory in two years -- a 34-26 triumph at Rice. Dimel’s first UTEP team featured second team All-Conference USA graduate transfer linebacker A.J. Hotchkins, who tied for the league lead with 126 tackles and finished 17th nationally in tackles per game (10.5). The 2019 Miners had double the number of second team All-Conference performers in senior defensive end Denzel Chukwukelu, who tied for the team lead in tackles for losses (5.5) and sacks (three), and senior center Derron Gatewood, who made a productive return to the starting lineup after missing the entire 2018 campaign due to injury. Numerous Miners have garnered honorable mention All-Conference USA accolades under Dimel, including defensive back Nik Needham in 2018. Needham finished his career as UTEP’s alltime leader in pass breakups (33) and is currently with the Miami

After the UTEP defense exhibited staunch improvement in 2018, it was the offense’s turn to make strides in 2019 despite losing starting tailback Quardraiz Wadley to a season-ending injury. In his place, senior Treyvon Hughes rushed for 12 touchdowns and the wide receiver corps emerged as a major team strength by year’s end. Jacob Cowing led all Conference USA freshmen with 550 receiving yards. Cowing and Justin Garrett both came on strong to conclude the campaign with 441 and 370 receiving yards respectively over the final six games. Cowing wasn’t the only true freshman to make his mark in C-USA in 2019. Defensive end Praise Amaewhule was tabbed to the league’s All-Freshman Team after tying for the team lead in tackles for losses (5.5) and sacks (three). Cowing and Amaewhule are just a couple of examples of the Miners upgrading their talent level under Dimel and putting the program on solid footing for the future. Dimel was previously the head coach at the University of Wyoming and the University of Houston. He served as the offensive coordinator, running backs coach and tight ends coach at his alma mater, Kansas State University,

from 2009-17. He also spent three seasons on the staff at the University of Arizona. Dimel completed his third tour of duty with the Wildcats, including a year (2005) continuing work on his graduate degree. Working under legendary coach Bill Snyder, he was a part of 12 bowl teams during 19 seasons in Manhattan. The Wildcats posted an 11-win season (2012), two 10-win campaigns (1995, 2011) and five nine-win seasons (1993, 1994, 1996, 2014, 2016) during that span, and finished in the top-18 of the national poll on three occasions (2011, 2012, 2014). They won the Big 12 championship in 2012. Dimel compiled the most wins of any active offensive coordinator in college football from 2011-17 (61), and was a part of eight straight bowl appearances including in 2017. The 2016 Wildcats defeated Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU. With Dimel calling the plays over seven seasons, the Wildcats averaged 33.4 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. They ranked third nationally in fewest turnovers per game behind LSU and Alabama from 2011-17. During Dimel’s tenure as offensive coordinator, Kansas State routinely ranked among the nation’s best teams in red zone and third down efficiency. In 2016, Kansas

offense. K-State was also 25th in third down conversions and 12th in fourth down conversions while shattering the school record for passing yards (3,736) and completion percentage (65.3). The Wildcats tallied 5,481 yards of offense (fourth in the school record book) and 465 points (sixth). Dimel’s play calling helped wide receiver Tyler Lockett leave K-State with the school’s career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdown records, while quarterback Jake Waters broke the school marks for single-season passing yards (3,501) and total offensive yards (3,985). Waters is currently a member of Dimel’s UTEP staff. Dimel’s units found success again in 2013 as K-State rated eighth nationally in yards per completion and 13th in passing efficiency, while the Wildcats ranked fifth and third in school history in those respective categories. One of the best offenses in the nation on third downs (No. 13) and inside the red zone (No. 27), K-State ranked in the top-10 in school history in

yards per play (second), total yards (fifth), passing yards (fifth) and points (eighth). John Hubert concluded his career as the Wildcats’ no. 2 all-time leading rusher with 2,993 yards. The 2012 season was another banner year as Dimel co-coordinated an offense that finished in the top-25 nationally in nearly 10 categories, including a ninth-place ranking in yards per attempt, 11th in scoring offense and 13th in yards per completion. That year Dimel coached Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, who passed for 2,641 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 920 yards and 23 scores. In 2011, Dimel led a rushing offense that saw Klein set a new Big 12 record and NCAA record by a quarterback with 27 rushing touchdowns while surpassing the 1,000-yard rushing mark on the season. DANA DIMEL among the top-10 teams in the country in total red zone efficiency and No. 1 in touchdown percentage in the red zone. In 2009 and 2010, Dimel had the charge of molding a former community college quarterback into a physical running back in the Big 12 Conference. That player was Daniel Thomas, and 2,850 yards and 30 touchdowns later, Thomas left Kansas State as a two-time Big 12 rushing champion, an All-American and the school’s no. 3 all-time rusher. Dimel started his career at K-State as a graduate assistant from 198788 prior to being elevated to offensive line coach in 1989. He took over as offensive coordinator in 1995. Overall Dimel spent 10 seasons in Manhattan (1987-96) prior to accepting the head coaching position at Wyoming. At the time of his hire, he was the youngest Division I-A head coach in the nation at the age of 34. Wyoming’s three seasons at Wyoming (1997-99) produced a record of 22-13, with one eight-win season (1998, 8-3) and two seven-win campaigns (1997, 7-6 and 1999, 7-4). The Cowboys posted a combined conference mark of 14-9 while splitting time in the Western Athletic Conference (1997-98) and the Mountain West Conference (1999). In 1998, Wyoming was 6-2 in the WAC’s Mountain Division, good for a second-place finish. Dimel coached three Academic All-Americans at Wyoming. Dimel spent 2000-02 as the head coach at Houston. Spearheading a major rebuilding effort, he led the Cougars to five wins in 2002 following a 0-11 campaign in 2001. In Dimel’s final game with the Cougars, Houston upset conference champion Louisville. Dimel brought in the top-ranked recruiting class in Conference USA in

both 2001 and 2002 and coached Joffrey Reynolds, who broke the C-USA season rushing record with 1,545 yards. He continued work on his graduate degree at Kansas State in 2005 prior to taking over as Arizona’s tight ends coach and, eventually, run game coordinator from 200608. In 2008, he added running backs to his list of responsibilities as he was promoted to Associate Head Coach with the Wildcats. The 2008 Arizona squad finished 8-5 while posting a bowl victory (Las Vegas Bowl) for the first time in 10 years. Among Dimel’s protégés at Arizona was Rob Gronkowski, who emerged as one of the top tight ends in NFL history with the New England Patriots. During his initial tenure at K-State, Dimel coordinated an offense that established school records for touchdowns, points and yards in 1995. He mentored 11 offensive linemen who went on to sign NFL contracts over those 10 years, while he was also instrumental in developing All-Americans Bar-

rett Brooks, Jim Hmielewski and Quentin Neujahr. During his career as a head or assistant coach, Dimel has coached 37 players who have gone on to play in the NFL. Dimel was a two-year letterman as an offensive lineman at Kansas State. He was a member of the Wildcats’ All-Decade Team for the 1980’s. He signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings and attended training camp in 1987. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing from Kansas State in 1986. Dimel and his wife, Julie, have a son, Winston and a daughter, Josey. His son was a graduate transfer fullback on the UTEP football team in 2018. He previously played at Kansas State and scored 25 touchdowns over the three seasons. He was a three-time AllBig 12 player, garnering first team honors in 2015 and 2016. @UTEPATHLETICS

SCHOOL NAME

The State School of Mines and Metallurgy opened in September 1914 because city leaders shared a vision for higher education. In 1920, it became known as Texas College of Mines (TCM). To better reflect its role as an expanding regional college campus, the school changed its name in 1949 to Texas Western College. In 1967, it became The University of Texas at El Paso.

SCHOOL COLORS

UTEP’s original colors were burnt orange and white, adopted from The University of Texas, and shared with UT San Antonio. In 1980, when President Haskell Monroe came to campus, he found that many individuals desired to give UTEP an identity of its own by changing the school’s colors. Early

on Dr. Monroe was presented with a proposal to change the colors to orange and blue. Unfortunately, UT San Antonio changed their colors to orange and blue just days before UTEP’s proposal was presented. This minor issue was quickly resolved by altering the shades of orange and blue. The chosen orange was more “brownish” than “burnt” and was thought to resemble the mountains at the pass. The blue was slightly darker than the blue being used by the old NFL team, the Houston Oilers; the color was identified as “El Paso Bright Blue Sky.” Officially, the academic colors of all the institutions in the UT System were orange and white, but for athletic purposes, additional or substitute colors could be used with the Board’s approval. Monroe presented his

argument and the color selection to the Board of Regents and they voted in UTEP’s favor.

MASCOT PAYDIRT PETE

In the spring of 1919, the registrar for the School of Mines, Ruth Monro Augur, designed the institution’s first official seal. The seal featured a head of a spade with a mining burro superimposed on it. This burro, noted the Prospector student newspaper at the time, was to be the school’s first mascot. The University of Texas at El Paso’s first live mascot was a burro. But Paydirt Pete — UTEP’s pickaxe-wielding mascot with the smooth mustache and square chin — has been an indelible symbol of the University’s athletic prowess and Miner spirit for more than 40 years. Since 1974 when the moniker “Paydirt Pete” was adopted, fans have watched the mighty mascot undergo six incarnations. Paydirt Pete started as a Disneylike character in 1980. He developed muscles and a smoking habit in 1983, but ditched the cigar three years later. Pete exchanged his mining helmet for a cowboy hat and a handlebar mustache in 1999, then became a scraggly miner the following year. In 2005, he was finally transformed into the “Magnum, P.I.” look-alike that Miner fans love today.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - JIM SENTER the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball squads all exhibited significant improvement. Off the field, a school-record 174 UTEP student-athletes registered grade point averages of 3.0 or higher at the conclusion of the fall 2019 semester, and 49 -- also a new school standard -- were recipients of C-USA Academic Medals with GPA’s of 3.75 or better. Jim Senter was named UTEP’s Director of Athletics on Nov. 22, 2017. To say that Senter has been busy since arriving in the Sun City would be quite the understatement. He has hired head coaches for football (Dana Dimel), men’s basketball (Rodney Terry), rifle (Austin Litherland), soccer (Kathryn Balogun), volleyball (Ben Wallis) and softball (T.J. Hubbard). With a firm belief that “Every Person Makes a Difference,” Senter has engaged Miner supporters far and wide. He organized a series of Town Hall meetings across El Paso, and established UTEP’s first-ever Fan Council. He also unveiled a vision for the future of Sun Bowl Stadium, with sweeping changes scheduled to take place in the iconic venue beginning with the 2020 season. On the field, highlights from the early Senter era have included the women’s cross country team capturing its first conference championship, women’s track and field winning the Conference USA Indoor title, and women’s golf posting three consecutive tournament victories for the first time in school history. Senter served as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, from 201417. During that time he hired head coaches in football, men’s basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball. Senter’s fundraising efforts resulted in significant improvements being made to the football, basketball and baseball facilities. He grew scholarship endowment by nearly $6 million in cash and pledges over three years. His total fundraising numbers set school records. Senter grew football attendance by more than 3,000 spectators per game, and the Bulldogs led the Southern Conference in attendance. They posted a 10win season in 2016 and a ninevictory campaign in 2015. Academically, 174 Bulldog student-athletes garnered placement on the Southern Conference Honor Roll in 2017. The year prior, The Citadel produced two CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic AllAmericans. Senter went to The Citadel after spending seven years

(2006-13) at the University of Colorado, where he worked his way up to Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations. Senter was the sport supervisor for the Colorado football, skiing, men’s and women’s golf programs. He also had supervision over the Chief Marketing Officer and numerous other areas including facilities, sports medicine, sports performance, game and event management and equipment services. He began his tenure at Colorado as Associate AD for Development. In that role, his responsibilities included all fundraising efforts, including the annual fund (student-athlete scholarships), major gifts and coordinating all donationrelated activities and staff. He was later elevated to Associate Athletic Director. Before Colorado, Senter served as Associate Athletic Director for Development/Senior Associate AD for External Sales at San Diego State for 18 months. Aligned closely with the University foundation, he was responsible for overseeing the athletic department’s development efforts, including major gifts. He spent 2003-05 as Director of Athletics at Idaho State University, a 16-sport Division I-AA program. He engineered a 19 percent increase in football attendance and a $600,000 leap in advertising, marketing and corporate sales. Senter began his college athletic career at the University of Idaho. He served as Assistant and Associate Athletic Director of Development from 1998-2003 in a chief fundraising capacity. He was responsible for the university’s Capital Campaign for Athletics, helping raise money for a $13 million athletic facility expansion. He also ran the annual fund for Vandal athletics, overseeing the work of 48 national directors and planning the fiscal budget.

During his coaching days, Senter was in charge of the defensive line, linebackers and secondary. He was a part of Idaho’s run to a 52-21 record over seven seasons and six NCAA playoff appearances. Senter began his coaching career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, where he was a student assistant in 1981 and 1982. He later held that role at his alma mater, the University of Tulsa, from 1983-85 before moving on to Idaho.

Senter earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tulsa in 1985, and added a master’s degree in recreation from Idaho in 1992 while serving on the football coaching staff. He was born in Doylestown, Pa., and graduated from Jay (Okla.) High School where he was a football letter winner. He is married to the former Susan Beck and the couple has four children -- Shawna, Derick, Matthew and Samantha.

Dr. Heather Wilson became the 11th President of The University of Texas at El Paso in 2019 after serving as Secretary of the United States Air Force. She is the former president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, and she represented New Mexico in the United States Congress for ten years. Active in community and national affairs, Dr. Wilson is a member of the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science Foundation and she chairs the Women in Aviation Advisory Board of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Wilson has also served on several corporate, non-profit and advisory boards. Dr. Wilson is the granddaughter of immigrants and was the first person in her family to go to college. She graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in the third class to admit women and earned her masters and doctoral degrees from Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar.

TRANSPLANTED MIDWESTERNER KEATS EMBRACING HIS ADOPTED MINERS

By Jeff Darby, UTEP Athletics Matt Keats grew up about as far away from El Paso as you can imagine – in the cold and windy suburbs of Chicago. He played ice hockey, and cheered on the Blackhawks, Bulls and White Sox. When he moved to Boston in the late ‘70s, his love for sports traveled with him, and he began supporting the Bruins, Celtics and Patriots. No matter where he went, sports played a big role in Keats’ life. So when his manufacturing company decided to open a satellite branch in El Paso in the mid ‘90s, suddenly he needed to find a new team. “When I got here, I had absolutely no idea about UTEP, its sports history, the NCAA basketball championship or Don Haskins,” he said. That all changed when a tall gentleman named John Thompson set foot in his office one day. “He came in to make a cold call on me, and it turns out he was the athletic director at UTEP at the time,” Keats said. “He asked me, ‘Are you a sports fan?’ and I said, ‘You came to the right place.’”

Later, he purchased football season tickets since both of his sons played the game. “It was a great family event for me, my wife and two boys,” he said. “So I had four basketball seats and four football seats.” A quarter century later, Keats continues to support his adopted Miners, and has a lot of fond memories to recall. “I really, really enjoy basketball and I would say my favorite season was the [2009-10] conference championship year,” he said. “Those were really exciting times. A lot of the teams have been very, very good, going back to when I first moved here. We have seen a lot of UTEP players go on to be successful professional athletes. A perfect example right now is Aaron Jones. He is really exciting to watch, and a guy that is putting El Paso on the map with his ‘915’ [hand gesture].” As his support for UTEP Athletics has grown, Keats has had the opportunity to develop personal relationships with some of the key coaches and administrators.

“I have been privileged to go to a UTEP basketball practice, to talk to Rodney Terry and Dana Dimel,” he said. “Jim Senter has been great, he has been to my facility a couple of times. I have a huge connection, and that’s what UTEP does for this community, it bands everybody together. That’s what sports should do, and UTEP does a good job of it.” Keats and UTEP Athletics have forged a mutual admiration society, and that does not go unnoticed. “The people that represent the University really do a great job of coming out to the community and meeting people,” he said. “When I’m at the game, I see Jim Senter, and he comes up and shakes my hand and says, ‘Thank you Matt.’ I can’t tell you how many personal cards I’ve gotten in the last two years that show that whenever I’m giving, they care and they recognize it. It means a lot.” Keats is excited about the future of UTEP Athletics, and encourages others to take his lead and get behind the Miners. “I encourage other people in El Paso to jump on the bandwagon, to promote and donate,” he said. “Give when you can, because this can only better our economy and it helps instill pride in our city.”

Before long, Keats found himself having lunch at Jaxon’s Restaurant with Thompson and the legendary coach that they called ‘The Bear.’ “I started listening, and Don was a really good storyteller,” Keats said. “I was enthralled, and so enthused by that luncheon that I signed up for basketball season tickets, I think the next day.”

UTEP FOOTBALL COVID•19 FAN PROTOCOLS PRIOR TO THE GAME

STADIUM ATTENDANCE

• All parking lots will open 3 hours prior to kickoff.

• Fans are asked to try and remain socially distanced at all times while traversing the stadium.

• All parking passes will be digital – season passes and single game passes.

• All tailgating is prohibited. • The traditional fan, spirit squad and marching band welcoming of the team to the stadium (Miner Walk) will not take place. • Public, shared youth activities (i.e. inflatables) will not be in operation. • Faces coverings/masks are required.

STADIUM ENTRY

• Gates will open 30 minutes earlier than usual – two hours prior to kickoff compared to 90 minutes – to assist with fan entry and social distancing. • Fans are highly encouraged to enter the stadium through the gate closest to their parking spot or the gate closest to their seats. • Fans exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be turned away/not allowed to enter and will have their ticket(s) refunded. • Upon arriving at a stadium gate, fans will be social distanced and must have a mask on in order to enter. Fans without a mask will not be allowed to enter. • A clear bag policy is in place and will be enforced. • Fans are required to wear a mask while in the stadium.

• Fans must follow and abide by stadium signage and directions provided by stadium personnel and security staff. • All fans will have assigned seats. There will be no general admission seating. • All aisle seats are not being sold to provide additional distancing between fans, especially for fan movement/flow purposes. • Fans’ seats are socially distanced and fans must remain in their assigned seats during the entirety of the game (outside of utilizing restrooms, purchasing concessions, etc.) • Large hospitality areas will have reduced capacity and signage and stanchions will be erected to promote social distancing. • Stadium security and ushers will monitor the stands and other fan areas to ensure fans remain in the seats they purchased and abide by all stadium rules and regulations. • Restrooms will have capacity limits and will be monitored by stadium personnel. Fans should plan accordingly if they need to use these facilities. • Restroom interiors will be adjusted to provide as much social distancing as possible (e.g. certain sinks and toilets will not be in operation). • Restroom signage will be installed detailing COVID-19 recommendations (i.e. hand washing procedures) and fans are asked to practice these. • Sanitization stations will be erected throughout the stadium. Fans should utilize these liberally. • All concession workers will receive safety training, especially education focused on new COVID-19 parameters.

• Once inside the stadium, fans must leave their face covering/mask on.

UTEP FOOTBALL COVID•19 FAN PROTOCOLS • The number of concessions stands and points of sale will be reduced compared to previous years to help accommodate social distancing on the concourse. • The concessions menu will be modified to provide more products that are pre-prepped and sealed. • Clear Plexiglas dividers will be installed at each concession stand. • Fans are encouraged to plan ahead and pay for concessions and make other game day purchases with debit/credit cards instead of with cash as cash sales will be discouraged. • Signage and stanchions will be erected outside concession stands to promote social distancing. • Concessions items will come with individual utensils, napkins and condiments. Satellite condiment stations will not be in use. • Water fountains will not be available this year. Fans are allowed to bring one, sealed water bottle into the stadium. • Traditional concourse displays and setups have been reduced or removed to accommodate social distancing. • The Bookstore location on the East side of the stadium will have reduced occupancy that will be monitored.

OTHER GAME DAY PROTOCOLS

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash immediately after use. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty. • All stadium staff and personnel will be required to fill out and complete an online COVID-19 screening form prior to arriving to campus for game day. • All stadium staff and personnel will be required to wear masks at all times. • In addition to wearing a mask, concessions and game day vendors will be required to wear gloves. • Frequency of cleaning by custodial staff will be increased, especially in high traffic public areas and items that incur shared use (countertops, railings, doorknobs/door handles, elevator buttons, etc.) • COVID-19 fan protocols will be messaged and reiterated via the video board and public address system. • The UTEP Marching Band and Spirit Squad will not perform on the field at any time.

STADIUM EXITING

• At the conclusion of the game, fans will be instructed to depart in a “deplaning” fashion with those fans closest to the exits leaving first followed by the next closet fans, all the while recognizing and respecting social distancing.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Wear a face covering.
