Miner Athletic Club Feature - Quintin Demps

Demps Urges Miner Nation to Give Back

Quintin Demps is a household name in El Paso, and for good reason. He starred on the football field for the Miners from 200407, before going on to play in the NFL from 2008-17. Now with his playing career in the rearview mirror, he’s transitioned into coaching as the secondary coach with Trinity International University. He’s understandably excited about it.

“I like to go by Coach Q,” Demps said. “I’m looking forward to it, I’m excited about it. My coaching journey has officially started. I think this season should be one of the most exciting seasons ever because of (having gone through) Covid. We should all be super excited to get football back at the right time.”

Even with his focus on his coaching position and pursuing a master’s degree in theology, Demps’s heart is never far from El Paso.

“I’m excited for the players. I was there this summer, I met some of the guys like Praise (Amaewhule) and all those guys,” Demps said. “I’m going to be keeping a close eye on those guys. They are very, very, very athletic. I was surprised by the athletes we have and the attitude. It’s going to be a good season.”

So far, he’s been spot on. The Miners in search of their first 3-1 start in 16 years. As more fans come out to the Sun Bowl, Demps reflects on what that meant to him when he was roaming the secondary for the Orange and Blue.

“I think it’s huge to get the support from the community,” Demps said. “Nothing beats packing the Sun Bowl. Just us (as players) knowing that the city had our back, we played harder. The fans were coming to watch us so we had to show up and show out. It’s very important to have that support.”

Above all, Demps is urging Miner nation to give back to the University like he has done through initiatives such as Paydirt’s Rally and donations through the Miner Athletic Club. “People should help out the Miner group because it’s important to support the people around you,” Demps said. “It’s important to support the UTEP Miners. Plus, El Paso is a giving city. It’s El Paso Strong so let’s show the world, show the team that we can come together. One way to start that is by getting behind the UTEP Miners football team and the whole athletic department. We gotta be about it.”
