MEN’S COACH PAT SKERRY When Pat Skerry was announced as the 13th men’s basketball head coach at Towson University on April 5, 2011, he took over a program that had endured 15-straight losing seasons. The Medford, Mass. native has revitalized the Towson men’s basketball program, leading the Tigers to consistent success in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Under Skerry’s leadership, Towson has the highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the CAA. Towson enters the 2020-21 season having won at least 18 games in six of the last eight years. The Tigers have participated in two postseason tournaments since the 2013-14 campaign. In 2015-16 and 2016-17, Towson finished with at least 20 wins, the second time in school history that Towson has won 20 games in consecutive seasons. Towson’s 25-win year in the 2013-14 campaign was the highest amount of victories in a season in Division I and most since 1977-78. The Tigers enjoyed a strong 2019-20 campaign that resulted in 19 victories and a third-place finish in the CAA for the third time in five years. The Tigers won a program record seven CAA road games and had a seven-game winning streak during the month of January. Brian Fobbs and Allen Betrand finished in the top-11 in the CAA in scoring and earned All-CAA Second Team and Third Team respectively while Nicolas Timberlake was the CAA Sixth Man of the Year. During the 2017-18 season, Towson won the Florida Gulf Coast Showcase and the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic. In addition, Towson had a 10-game winning streak, which was tied for the third best in program history. The Tigers started the season 10-1, which was the best in Towson’s Division I era, and received votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the second time in program history. The Tigers also spent six weeks in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll peaking at No. 4 on Dec. 19, 2017. Skerry, who won his 100th career game as Towson’s head coach on Nov. 21 following a win over Penn, was the recipient of the 2017 Gene Bartow award, which recognizes outstanding achievement and contributions to the game.
After winning just one game during his first season, Skerry led the Tigers to an 18-13 record in 2012-13. Not only was it the first winning season since 1995-96, it was also the largest single-season turnaround in NCAA Division I history. Skerry was selected as the CAA Coach of the Year: he became the first coach to receive that honor since Terry Truax earned back-to-back Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1992-93 and 1993-94. The success continued during the 2013-14 season as the Tigers won a Division I record 25 games. This includes winning their first two postseason games as a Division I program in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The 2013-14 season saw the Tigers end the year ranked 84th in the RPI, marking the first time Towson finished the season in the Top 100. The Tigers also received their first votes in the national polls in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Skerry has used his platform as a head coach and teamed up with Tom Herrion to start Autism Awareness in college basketball. What started as two guys with an idea has turned into a national event where hundreds of coaches wear the prominent blue puzzle piece pin. The effort put forth by both Skerry and Herrion were recognized as the duo was honored with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Guardians of the Game Service Award. Skerry served as an assistant for two seasons at the College of Charleston. In addition, Skerry spent five years with league teams William & Mary (200003) and Northeastern University (1998-2000). In 1996, Skerry became the second-youngest head coach in the nation at the age of 26 when he was selected to guide the Curry basketball program. During his two-year stop with the Colonels, he led Curry to its first winning season in five years. Skerry played collegiately at Tufts from 1989-92 where he was a two-time team captain and garnered All-New England honors. As a point guard, he recorded a school-record 650 assists during his career - a mark that still ranks as the 17th best in NCAA Division III history. Skerry earned both of his collegiate degrees from Tufts, earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1992 and his Master’s Degree in education in 1995. Pat and his wife, Kristen, have two sons, Ryan and Owen. W W W.T O W S O N T I G E R S . C O M 5

W O M E N ’S C O A C H D I A N E R I C H A R D S O N Diane Richardson enters her fourth year leading the Towson University women’s basketball program after being named the 10th head coach of the Tigers in 2017. The 2019-20 season brought an unprecedented ending due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Kionna Jeter and Nukiya Mayo capped the season returning to All-CAA teams. Richardson coached the Tigers to a 14-15 overall record and saw a win over then-first place James Madison in January. In the 2018-19 year, Richardson led Towson to its first program Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship and the program’s first berth to the NCAA Tournament. She was named the CAA and ECAC Coach of the Year and saw three players receive five All-CAA honors. Among several accomplishments, the 2018-19 team won the most games in 10 years. In her first season at Towson, Richardson saw Mary Cuevas and Mayo receive All-CAA honors as Cuevas earned Second Team plaudits while Mayo was named to the Third Team. Cuevas was also named to the CAA All-Defensive Team. Richardson was most recently an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at West Virginia. Richardson helped WVU win its first Big 12 title. West Virginia advanced to the NCAA Tournament where the Mountaineers defeated CAA Champion Elon before falling to Maryland. Richardson played a key role in the development of Tynice Martin, Lanay Montgomery and Teana Muldrow, all of whom earned All-Big 12 Conference accolades. Prior to her time in Morgantown, Richardson spent four years as an assistant coach at George Washington. Richardson helped the Colonials improve their win total from 11 wins to a school record 29 wins after just two seasons. GW captured a pair of Atlantic 10 regular season and conference tournament titles. Richardson and the Colonials made two NCAA Tournament appearances (2015,
2016) and reached the WNIT in 2014. She also played a key role in the development of Jonquel Jones, one of the most decorated players in GW history and current WNBA star. She coached four all-conference players, four all-tournament players and the A-10 Tournament MVP. Richardson had two successful stints as the head coach at Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She won five National Championships during her tenure and was ranked among the USA Today Top 10 in five of her eight years. She posted a 234-32 record and coached many talented players including Towson alum Dominique Johnson, who went on to become a 1,000 point scorer for the Tigers. Richardson was named the 2005 National High School Coach of the Year and also earned district and regional coach of the year accolades from the WBCA. She also organized an academic enrichment program which raised the team overall GPA to 3.6. In between her stints at Riverdale Baptist, Richardson spent time as an assistant coach at Maryland and American. She helped the Terrapins post a 33-4 record and played a key role in the development of Crystal Langhorne, Marissa Coleman and Kristi Tolliver, all of whom became WNBA All-Stars. Richardson earned her master’s degree in management from Central Michigan in 1984. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Frostburg State. She also ran track at Frostburg and was the 1979 NCAA regional champion in the 200 and 400 meter races. She earned a spot on the 1980 US Olympic team, which did not compete in the games. Richardson also has an extensive business background. She was the founder and C.O.O. for the American Security Companies. She also served as the President and C.E.O. of RCI Financial for several years.

T I M L E O N A R D, D I R E C T O R O F AT H L E T I C S Tim Leonard is in his eighth year as Towson University’s Director of Athletics. Leonard is a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Committee as the Southeast Region representative and served as its chair for the 2019-20 season. During Leonard’s tenure, Towson has seen strong success in all aspects as an athletic department, including on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Towson was the Fall 2018 NCAA Teamworks National Champion in community service with 5,583 hours in the Greater Baltimore area from September to November. During his tenure, several Towson teams have won conference tournament titles in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) or Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC): women’s basketball, women’s indoor track, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming & diving and volleyball. By Spring 2020, 18 of 19 Towson teams held a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. Towson facilities have seen major improvement during Leonard’s time at Towson, including the construction of the Lower Fields Complex, which has Tiger Stadium, the Tiger Softball Complex and the TU Field Hockey Complex. In addition, Johnny Unitas® Stadium, SECU Arena and John B. Schuerholz Park saw major upgrades to make Towson one of the premier mid-major athletic complexes in the country. In 2019-20, the COVID-19 pandemic affected all NCAA sports, yet Towson still saw strong success as a department. The volleyball team saw one of its best seasons in program history, winning an NCAA Tournament victory over Patriot League champion American after a perfect 16-0 CAA regular season and CAA Tournament championship, going 29-3 and never getting swept. Marrisa Wonders earned CAA Player of the Year and All-America honors from VolleyMag. In addition, the indoor track team won its first-ever ECAC Tournament, defeating 40 other teams up and down the East Coast with 63 points. Lauren Coleman earned All-America honors in the shot put, the first All-American under coach Mike Jackson. Yeedee Thaenrat of the football team was
a recipient of the John Randolph Inspiration Award after coming from war-torn Liberia when he was five years old, the second year in a row a Towson student-athlete has received the CAA’s Randolph Award. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball and football all finished in the top-four of the CAA, including football being nationally ranked all season and winning its first-ever regular season matchup between two top-10 teams with a 45-23 victory at No. 5 Maine. Leonard was instrumental in the opening of SECU Arena in November, 2013. The state-of-the-art arena seats 5,200 fans and features an LED ad ribbon board, a center-hung display and scoreboard, club seats, private suites and over 100 courtside seats. Prior to Towson, Leonard served as senior associate athletic director at SMU. He was also the Mustangs’ interim director of athletics from May to August, 2012. Leonard joined the staff at SMU after serving in a series of increasingly responsible positions at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He began as an assistant AD for development before moving up to assistant AD for external operations. Leonard’s final promotion at UCF saw him become the assistant vice president for athletics development and associate athletics director. Leonard’s athletics administration career also includes stops as Boise State’s assistant director of the Bronco Athletic Association and the director of annual giving at Illinois State. He is a member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and was the 2012 recipient of the NAADD Athletic Fundraiser of the Year award. In addition to his affiliation with NAADD, he is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). He is also currently a member of the NCAA men’s lacrosse committee. Leonard earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Boise State. SECU ARENA SECU Arena at Towson University is a 5,200seat venue for athletics, sporting events, concerts, commencements and more. Four Tiger athletics teams compete in this facility, including men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics. The facility enhances Towson University’s campus and connection to the community by creating new opportunities to host events for students, neighbors and residents throughout Baltimore and the state of Maryland. It is the current home of the Baltimore Blast of the Major Arena Soccer League. The 117,000-square-foot arena opened in fall 2013. It was awarded LEED Gold certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, in addition to a variety of other sustainable features. By using less energy and water, the building saves money for students and taxpayers; reduces greenhouse gas emissions; and contributes to a healthier environment for students, staff, guests, athletes and the larger community.
