Esteemed Illuminator Team:

I am extremely grateful to be the 93rd Illuminator Headlite and have the opportunity to lead such an amazing Organization and Team.

My new Tailite and longtime friend, Lori Brown, has a pretty amazing saying: “Grocery is a contact sport, you have to be present to WIN!”  I know you are thinking what I was thinking when I first heard that quote…Lori is brilliant!

I would extend this statement to say that as an Illuminator Member, you too have to be present, to win.  The more you engage and participate in Illuminator and related industry events the more opportunities you will have to WIN!

The Illuminators organization has changed the trajectory of my career in the Grocery Industry and it all started with volunteering in the Greeters and Publicity Committees at a CGA Conference in Las Vegas in 2009.  The exposure that this organization has given me to C-Suite Executives in the Grocery industry is priceless.  When the Presidents of Grocery companies call your cell phone asking you for help in tackling industry issues, you know you’ve developed some strong relationships and it points back to serving the Illuminator Organization.

Our retail and grocery partners feel our passion for education, see our dedication to servant leadership and receive the best service when they partner with the Illuminator companies.

I encourage all our new Illuminator members to engage a committee, take on leadership roles and build your business while building relationships with some of the best people in the industry.

A FINAL WORD FROM DIMMED HEADLITE, JUAN TRILLAS

I AM HONORED TO HAVE BEEN THE ILLUMINATORS 92ND HEADLITE FROM 2020-2022.

THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE AS HEADLITE FOR 2 YEARS WAS A GIFT THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET.

Affected by the COVID -19 pandemic at the start of my first year as Headlite, (2020-2021) the organization showed its resilience by joining the “Virtual World,” holding events and partnering with retailers to maintain contact with our retailer partners.

2021-2022 began my second “term” as Headlite, and with it came the opportunity to return to “in person” events, the 2021 CGA Conference was the first event the Illuminators were able to “Spread the Lite of Good Fellowship”! Followed by the WAFC, “Celebrating Over 100 Years of the WAFC”. This for me was the pinnacle of my Headlite years. To see and spend time with our Illuminator family, witnessing firsthand the Illuminator organization in its finest moment, supporting the WAFC & putting on “THE BEST EVER WAFC”. (Pardon my biased opinion)

As I look ahead, the Illuminators organization is in a tremendous position going forward! Our membership is rising, and the new officer team, led by our 93rd Headlite, Joe Perez, Greg Siegel, Subriana Pierce & Lori Brown, they will lead the Illuminators to new heights!

To our newer members: Get involved, spend time on a committee, support the Illuminator organization at the CGA Conference & the WAFC Convention and watch your presence grow in the grocery industry with the leaders of our retailer partners. Truly embrace our motto of “SPREADING THE LIGHT OF GOOD FELLOWSHIP”!

TESTIMONIALS

The Illuminators are an incredible group of people that are dedicated to providing educational opportunities for our industry and helping to develop the leaders of tomorrow. I value the friendships we’ve forged and look forward to continuing the long tradition of fellowship and partnership between retailers and the vendor/supplier community, sparked by the members of the Illuminators, in 2021 and beyond.

The Illuminators are a tremendous group of individuals within our vendor partner community, all I am proud to have met through the years and many who remain personal friends.  I truly appreciate the coordination and long-hours orchestrated by the Illuminators on behalf of all retailers, supporting various industry events including the annual CGA and WAFC Conventions.  The Illuminators are a t op-notch organization of caring business professionals, devoted to serving the current and future needs of our grocery industry!

THANK YOU CAROLE CHRISTIANSON FOR YOUR COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION THANK YOU!

Today marks the end to a significant chapter in my life.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the leadership of the Western Association of Food Chains, past and present, over the past 15 years.

We have accomplished much thanks to your passion and commitment to our purpose ”’Advancing the Food Industry through Education and Leadership”.

It has been a blessing and honor to get to know you,, your families and associates. Words are inadequate to convey how much your support, kindness and compassion expressed to me and my family, especially when we lost Paul, will never be forgotten.

Thanks to the partnership of the Illuminators and the WAFC, I met Paul Christianson with the Keebler Company in 1984 while serving on the Illuminators Greeters Committee at the WAFC Convention in San Antonio. What a gift of synchronicity!

Although bittersweet, I am so excited about WAFC’s future as Pat Posey takes the helm as your Chief Operating Officer. The best is yet to be!

Fondest regards, Carole Christianson

“The best is yet to be!”

WELCOME PAT POSEY AS NEW WAFC COO

The Shelby Report

Aug. 22, 2022

WAFC NAMES POSEY AS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

The Western Association of Food Chains has named Patrick “Pat” Posey to succeed Carole Christianson as chief operating officer, effective Sept. 1.

While retiring from the day-to-day operations of the WAFC, Christianson will be retained in an advisory role to ensure a smooth and transparent transition.

Scott Drew, 2022-23 WAFC president and chairman, heralded the news.

“Pat brings extensive leadership experience to the WAFC. He is an industry legend and has always made giving back to the community and the industry, a top priority,” said Drew, who also is president of Smart & Final.

“During his tenure in the Southern California food industry, Pat has been instrumental in developing and implementing numerous charity activities, including in support of education, that have made a real, significant difference in the lives of others. His passion for helping others and for education makes him the perfect choice to continue the legacy Carole has carefully crafted. I look forward to working with Pat as he transitions to this new role.”

Posey brings more than 38 years of food industry experience to the position. An industry veteran, he began his career with Ralphs Grocery Co. in 1986, culminating in the role of store director. While at Ralphs, he completed the USC Food Industry Management Program, a graduate of the 1996 class.

“In Pat Posey, the future of the WAFC is in solid form for continued growth in developing leaders for the future success of the food industry...”

In 1997, Posey left Ralphs to join Bristol Farms, where he has risen through the ranks from store director to VP of non-perishable procurement and merchandising over the past 25 years.

Involved in leadership positions with several philanthropic organizations, he has served on the WAFC board for the past 10 years, including four years as education chairman. He was elected VP in May.

Posey is the chairman of the City of Hope “Kids4Hope” Foundation; president of the Olive Crest Food Industry Roundtable; and executive member of the Orange County Boys Scouts of America, MDA and the California Hospital Foundation.

“In Pat Posey, the future of the WAFC is in solid form for continued growth in developing leaders for the future success of the food industry,” Christianson said.

“In the true spirit of servant leadership, he embodies the perfect combination of passion, performance and purpose. I could not be more pleased to see Pat at the helm and I look forward to working with him as he and Tina begin this chapter of his career.”

2021 ILLUMINATOR MID-YEAR BOARD MEETING

The 2021 Illuminator Mid-Year Board Meeting was held at the beautiful Renaissance Hotel in Palm Springs prior to the CGA Strategic Conference, 9/23-9/25. Headlite Juan Trillas and his lovely wife Stephanie promised an amazing event and did not disappoint. The festivities kicked off Thursday night at Eight4Nine restaurant in downtown Palm Springs. Amazing dinner with our Illuminator friends, and the evening was just getting started. Following dinner, the crew dispersed, lists in hand, on an epic scavenger hunt. Great opportunity to work off that dessert while searching for Hollywood stars, a dog, Marilyn Monroe, and more. Some decided to take the easy route and just Google the list (I’m looking at you, Joe Perez). The evening ended in the Headlite Suite, with fun stories to share and winners claiming their bragging rights.

The second day included a Greeter Bag Party-creating the special bags with donated items from our generous vendor community for the CGA Strategic Conference Guests. The group met for another delicious dinner and fellowship that evening at LG’s steakhouse. The board meeting was the third day. Topics covered included upcoming networking events, update on finances, committee updates, and an exciting update from Carole Christianson, previewing the upcoming WAFC convention, to be held once again in San Antonio, Texas.

Wonderful event, and we thank our gracious hosts, Headlite Juan and Stephanie Trillas.

Although they officially became first year Hilites in 2020, we celebrated a second “first year” for the following Hilites:

TESTIMONIALS

My appreciation for the Illuminators began when I first learned about the important role that they play in supporting the grocery industry through their involvement with the WAFC, CGA and other Illuminator events. That appreciation grew into deep admiration when I learned about all the ways that they “Spread the Lite of Good Fellowship” through their commitment to build servant leadership throughout the industry and their support of education through their Illuminator Education Foundation. And that deep admiration grew into lifelong friendships that build valuable, long-standing relationships.

The Illuminators foster deep connections between the retailer and vendor community which builds a strong spirit of collaboration. This collaboration between retailer and vendor has become a necessity in the complex and quickly evolving landscape of our industry. The good work the Illuminators do has never been more needed, and now is the time for you partner with them. The Illuminators have such a positive impact on so many lives and you can be a part of that!
