WHY JULY?

Not that we’re counting—OK, we are—but it has come to our attention that there is a flurry of celeb babies born in the seventh month of the year, suggesting some strategic canoodling back in October. Perhaps it’s the cold weather kicking in for the northern hemisphere’s winter that leads to snuggling, or just the planets aligning to ensure glorious sun-soaked Hollywood birthday

bashes, but mid-summer progeny in recent years include Harper Beckham (see p. 10), as well as kids of Matthew McConaughey (son Levi, born July 7), Russell Crowe (son Tennyson, July 7) and Liv Tyler (daughter Lula Rose, July 8), to name but a few. ITH MORE THAN 200 FRIENDS and family looking on, and rings delivered by the couple’s Cavalier King Charles spaniels Lexi and Harley, US Dancing with the Stars judge Julianne Hough tied the knot with Canadian NHL player Brooks Laich in a photogenic lakeside wedding held near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on July 8. “I don’t think I ever really necessarily dreamed about my wedding as a kid,” Hough, 29, tells WHO. “But I know I will cherish and remember it for the rest of my life.” The unfussy do, which had guests sitting on wooden pews surrounded by wild grasses, was exactly what the groom had in mind, too. “It was really important to me that we had our ceremony outdoors,” says Laich, 34. “Julianne and I are very adventurous and free and wanted the setting to be in nature.” (The reception was held al fresco as well, with—appropriately for the ballroom-champ bride—a custom-made antique mirror dance floor and fireworks to end the night.) “I’ve never seen a man look at a woman like that when they said, ‘I do,’ ” says close friend The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev. “It took my breath away.” n

BILLIE INHERITS Carrie Fisher’s girl will be taken care of

ALMOST SIX MONTHS AFTER HER mother, Carrie Fisher, died after going into cardiac arrest on a Dec. 23 flight, actress Billie Lourd, who turns 25 on July 17, has been named beneficiary of her estate, including the rights to the Star Wars star’s public image and likeness, plus intellectual property rights. Fisher’s assets, outlined in court documents obtained by WHO, include several bank accounts, a 2016 Tesla S and a life-insurance policy. Personal belongings such as jewellery and artwork will also go to Lourd, Fisher’s only child, from her relationship with talent executive Bryan Lourd. Fisher’s estate, which she shared with her late mother, Debbie Reynolds, is now on the market for $US18 million with proceeds from the sale likely to be incorporated into the trust. Her mother “was imperfect in many ways,” Lourd said in April. “But her imperfections and willingness to speak about them are what made her more than perfect.” n

Lautner and Lourd co-starred on Scream Queens.

SAD SPLIT

AFTER DATING FOR EIGHT MONTHS, BILLIE Lourd and Twilight actor Taylor Lautner, 25, have broken up. “They aren’t together anymore but they are still friendly,” a source tells WHO. “She’s really focused on her work right now.” The pair started seeing each other shortly before the Scream Queens actress lost her mother, as well as grandmother Debbie Reynolds, in late December.

HREE DAYS BEFORE THEIR TWINS’ ONEmonth milestone, George and Amal Clooney were spotted in public with Ella and Alexander for the first time—and, naturally, everyone was travelling in style. Stepping out of a private jet in Milan on July 3, the new parents each toted a newborn—the bubs snug in traditional-style lacy white baby carriers—as they made their way to a waiting van. Next stop for the family was likely their palatial summer home, Villa Oleandra on Lake Como, 45 minutes from Milan airport. The villa boasts 10 bedrooms so there’s plenty of space for the new additions, who have enriched their 56-year-old dad’s life no end, according to granddad Nick Clooney. “No question about it, he changed,” Nick told ET last month. “This is a different kind of maturity.” George’s longtime friend and business partner, Rande Gerber, seconds that: “He’s so happy right now.” There was no confirmation at press time on whether Gerber and his wife Cindy Crawford would be joining the Clooneys in Lake Como, but Gerber—dad to Presley, 17, and Kaia, 15—is already planning joint family holidays. “We’ll continue to ... go to incredible places and spend a lot of time together,” he said. “My kids will be perfect babysitters for theirs.” n

The 39-year-old barrister is “super woman,” said her father-in-law Nick Clooney.

THREE YEARS AGO, “I WAS A malnourished string bean,” admits Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’s youngest daughter, “with aches that echoed throughout my soul.” Now, at 23, Tallulah Willis recognised how far she’s come with a heartfelt post on July 7. “I was constantly punishing [myself] for not being enough,” she wrote on Instagram. “Self annihilation fuelled with medicating left me a shell, and the world on mute.” Willis has previously been frank about her body dysmorphia (she once dropped to 43kg after reading negative online comments about her weight), and a stint in rehab after her parents had given her an ultimatum. A family insider told WHO in 2014: “Her parents were about to take away everything from her.” Willis and her two older sisters (they also have two younger halfsisters from their father’s remarriage) are all recognising milestones right now: musician Scout Willis, 25, celebrated one year of being sober on July 6—“honestly I am so f--king proud of myself for this one”—and congratulated Tallulah on her achievement. Oldest sister Rumer, 28, six months sober on July 1, also weighed in on Tallulah (“The woman I have seen you become in the last 3 years has me in awe of you”) and Scout (“So proud of you sister”). Still, looking back at her troubled younger self, Willis writes, “I love the girl in this picture, I cry for her and I mourn her lost years ... staying sober has been far and beyond the most important thing I’ve done in my wee 23 years.” n

Willis’s throwback posted on July 7 (right) was her at age 20, when “I did not value myself, my life or my body.” Earlier that year she’d revealed she had been diagnosed with body dysmorphia at age 13.

“I love my three sisters,” said Tallulah Willis (left), with her siblings and mum Demi Moore (right) on June 26.

The event “was a beautiful thing to do with my mum, Harper, plus a few school friends.” While Harper’s mother, Victoria, 43, reportedly couldn’t make the tea party, she shared a photo of “our little birthday princess” and Harper’s brothers—Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 14, and Cruz, 12—also chimed in via social media. “I can’t believe it has been already six years,” wrote Cruz. “To the best sister in the world, I love you so much, have an amazing day.” Her dad paid tribute to “a special girl who brings so much joy and happiness into our lives,” he wrote. “We love you pretty lady.” n

It’s dream news for Lindy, who told the Daily Telegraph in May that she would love to have one more child. “Adam doesn’t have any children of his own, but he’s an incredible stepfather,” she said. “I’m getting on, getting older. Robson (in 2013) initially denied sexual abuse claims at Michael Jackson’s 2005 molestation trial, but after the singer’s death claimed he was abused by Jackson over an eight-year-period.

A $130m lawsuit hopes to break

AWYERS FOR Australian-born choreographer Wade Robson— who is suing two of Michael Jackson’s former companies in relation to alleged sexual abuse by the pop star—have launched a global hunt for Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of molesting him when he was 13 years old. The search for Chandler, who received a $26m settlement in 1993 after his father alleged abuse by Jackson at his Neverland Ranch, has moved from the US to Europe and the UK. “He’s a key piece of the puzzle surrounding the case, and we’re not going to stop until we find him,” said lawyer Vince Finaldi. Robson says he was abused over eight years after being brought into Jackson’s world as a small child in the late 1980s when he won a dance competition in Australia run by Jackson’s

MJJ Ventures. The Hawaiibased dancer, 34—who has worked for Britney Spears and was a judge on So You Think You Can Dance—filed a complaint last year claiming Jackson and key staffers at his company ran a “sophisticated child sexual abuse procurement and facilitation operation.” The trial date has been set for March 2018.

SILENT WITNESS

JORDAN CHANDLER WAS 13 when he first met Michael Jackson. Sleepovers at Neverland Ranch allegedly led to sexual abuse, which in turn led to the boy’s father, Evan Chandler, filing a suit against the singer. While the Chandlers received a $26m payout, Jordan has never spoken publicly about his time with Jackson.

ARRESTED AGAIN!

Robson hopes Chandler (in 2009) will testify at his court case.

The volatile star faces fresh charges

LaBeouf (in the July 8 mugshot) previously pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in 2014.

ACTOR SHIA LABEOUF’S SMOKING HABIT HAS SPARKED trouble—he was charged with disorderly conduct after he behaved aggressively towards a stranger and a police officer when they refused his request for a cigarette. LaBeouf, 31, approached the two for a cigarette in the early hours of July 8 in Savannah, Georgia, where he is filming The Peanut Butter Falcon with Dakota Fanning. When they refused he became disorderly, using profanities and vulgar language, prompting the policeman to act. “When the officer attempted to place LaBeouf under arrest, LaBeouf ran to a nearby hotel,” a police statement said. The actor was arrested at the hotel and charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. n

Meanwhile investigators continue to search for Chandler. “Wade and Jimmy [Safechuck, co-complainant] want to look Jordie in the eye and talk to him about what they suffered,” a source told the New York Daily News. “They feel that they may appeal to him to finally tell his story.” n

AFTER ANNOUNCING TO FANS she had made the painful decision to re-home her rescue dog Lamby due to his “challenging behaviour” from prior abuse issues, Lena Dunham came under fire. The Girls creator, 31, was accused of being an unfit pet owner after the head of the Brooklyn based no-kill shelter BARC, where Dunham rescued Lamby, refuted claims the dog had a traumatic past. But Matt Beisner of the Zen Dog in LA, who took in Lamby when a desperate Dunham reached out to him, defended the actress, telling WHO the dog was “really aggressive” when Dunham contacted him after working with six other trainers: “She was at her wit’s end.” Dunham, who still has poodles Susan and Karen, said she had struggled with “four years of challenging behaviour and aggression” that she was unable to treat with training or medication. “After countless hours of training, endless financial support and a lot of tears, he was given access to a better life. I still support him financially and I’ll always be there for him in every way but he’s notably happier in his new surroundings,” she responded on July 6. n

They looked happy,” says the source. “They had a quick dinner and then returned to Ben’s house.” Adds an onlooker, “They were laughing and being affectionate.” While the pair’s openness might be new, the relationship isn’t. Shookus is connected to Affleck’s complicated past, with multiple sources telling WHO the pair began an affair Shookus, with in 2013 while the actor was still married to her newly public man, “isn’t Jennifer Garner and Saturday Night Live someone who producer Shookus was married to Kevin does things without thinking Miller, then a fellow SNL staffer. Couples is relatively new and the two didn’t date until both were separated from their spouses. Emmy winner Shookus—who a source calls “strong and well-respected”—split from Miller in 2014 after four years of marriage and one daughter; Affleck and Garner announced their separation in 2015, on the eve of their 10th wedding anniversary. “Lindsay was not what led to the end of their marriage,” said one insider. “They had a ton of other problems.” But other insiders paint a different story. “Ben had multiple affairs and she was a significant one,” says one source close to the situation. With her mother fighting brain cancer, the TV host had to undergo complex neurosurgery. Now in recovery, she feels a stronger connection to family

s her mother, Litsa, suffered through stage 4 brain cancer, Maria Menounos says she prayed, “God, I wish you just gave this to me. I have the fight; I have the will. I wish it was me.” Early this year the E! TV host and author started experiencing headaches and dizziness before an MRI revealed she had a brain tumour the size of a golf ball wrapped around her facial nerves. On June 8—her 39th birthday—Menounos underwent complex seven-hour surgery by Dr Keith L. Black, a neurosurgeon at LA’s Cedars-Sinai hospital. The tumour—a benign meningioma—was successfully removed but could possibly return. Menounos is recovering well, though still dealing with numbness and balance issues that will take weeks to heal. She is leaning on fiancé Keven Undergaro, 51, and her parents—and she’s grateful for how the ordeal has brought them closer and led her to rethink her work-focused life. “This was a blessing,” she says. “A lot of beautiful things have come from this.” Who l 29

A delicate operation “Obviously, dealing with her mother, she was concerned if the tumour was cancerous,” says Dr Black (near right, with Menounos and Undergaro at the hospital). “She was extremely brave and very intelligent about the way she approached it.” Black operated through the back of her skull (below). “With 10 being the most complex, I would rate her tumour probably around 7 or higher,” he says.

Friends Sylvester Stallone and Vin Diesel (far right) helped Menounos celebrate her birthday days before surgery.

she started radiation and chemo.” As she cared for her mother, Menounos experienced some troubling symptoms herself. “[In February] I thought I had an ear infection so I went to a doctor and he said, ‘Your ears are the cleanest things I’ve ever seen. What else are you feeling?’ I’d been getting light-headed on-set and having headaches. My speech had gotten slurred and I was having difficulty reading the teleprompter. I said, ‘I know you’re going to think I’m crazy, but I think I have a brain tumour like my mom.’ He said, ‘I don’t think you’re crazy. Let’s just get an MRI.’ The next week I started feeling better so I was like, ‘I’m clearly paranoid.’ So I kept pushing the MRI [back].” In April, she finally had the scan that confirmed she had a meningioma, a brain tumour that is usually benign, but requires complex surgery to remove.

“I didn’t cry. I actually laughed. At that point it was like, ‘This is a joke.’ It’s so surreal and crazy and unbelievable that my mom has a brain tumour—and now I have one too?” Menounos says. “I just remember thinking, ‘I can’t even tell my parents because all of us have just been so drained.’ I went to Dr Black and he showed me the MRI. The tumour was about the size of a golf ball and it was pushing on all my facial nerves. He said, ‘I’m 98 per cent sure it’s benign, but we won’t know until we get in there.’ He gave me my options: we could try radiation, but it has a 70 per cent chance of working. Or we could wait and watch it. But it’s also big. And we want to have a family. We’re doing IVF and I’m so lucky I haven’t gotten pregnant yet, because when you are pregnant, [tumours] grow fast. So we all agreed: pull this sucker out.” Menounos hoped her operation would be a simpler affair than her mother’s brain-cancer treatment but found out hers was far more dangerous and complicated because of where it was. The two conditions were also not connected, according to Dr Black. Menounos then spent the next few weeks helping her mother and preparing for surgery. “Deciding to tell my parents was the toughest part,” she says. Three days before the surgery, she and Undergaro approached them and said, “We have something to tell you.” “Every time I say it, people say, ‘You’re pregnant!’ And it’s like, ‘No, it’s not a good thing.’ I said, ‘I want you to understand that you have brain cancer, but not all tumours are cancerous. We found a tumour in me.’ Both of them just welled up. They were just in shock, but we kept reassuring them it would be fine.” The E! host managed to keep her sense of humour, nicknaming the tumour “Debbie.” “That was our code word for it so that no-one would know what we were talking about. My goal was just to be as happy and calm as possible because I didn’t want it to be hard on everybody,” Menounos says. But she now concedes to the turmoil under the surface of her calm exterior. “There were moments that I did get scared. The what-ifs started to kind of consume me. My face could have been paralysed, a lot of bad things were very possible. The thing that was scaring me the most was that I didn’t know if I was prepared because I had been so busy taking care of everyone.” On the day of the surgery, her birthday, Menounos chose to play theme music—“The Final Bell” from Rocky—as she was wheeled into the operating theatre. “Dr Black had to go in through the back [of my head], so they had me lie on my left side

“Beautiful things have come from this”

The family’s ordeal began when Menounos’s mother began complaining of fatigue. “We thought maybe she had Lyme disease because they live in Connecticut half the year and with us half the year, but she got tested and nothing. Then one Saturday morning [last August], she called me and said, ‘We are going to the hospital. My speech went slurred and the water spilled out of my mouth.’ It sounded like a little stroke,” Menounos recalls. “The doctors said, ‘You have stage 4 glioblastoma’—it was brain cancer and the worst kind. And my mom was like, ‘OK.’ No tears, no drama. I was just trying to stay calm because I knew she needed to be in the best of the best hands. My mom felt a really good connection with Dr Black, so we did her surgery with him. And he got almost a full resection [removal].” From there it was “a roller-coaster,” Menounos describes. “Two weeks later we did an MRI and it looked like [the remaining tumour] had already grown double in size, so

Through both of their treatments Menounos’s mother, Litsa (below left), 62, “never cried; she’s always been positive,” says Maria. Litsa’s latest scan shows her cancer appears to be shrinking. “The report says ‘stable,’ but when you measure it, it’s smaller,” says Maria.

and twist my head to a 45-degree angle and it lasted for about seven hours. When I came out, I was a wreck. I had double vision when I could see. They wanted to send me for an MRI right away, but I was puking,” she says. By then she was also quoting Rocky: “It ain’t how hard you hit, it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” After six days in hospital she was given a cautious all-clear. “It looks like he got 99.9 per cent of it. He said there’s a 6 to 7 per cent chance that we’ll see it come back—but I’ll take those odds any day,” Menounos reports. When WHO caught up with Menounos at her LA home on June 27, she was feeling better—but still recovering. “I don’t have my balance fully yet, but [don’t] need the walker anymore. I’ve whittled the pain medication down and today I’m only on Tylenol. My face is still numb, my nose is numb and my ear keeps blocking. This is something that takes at least a month of healing, but I’m getting stronger and stronger every day, and I’ll be back to normal soon.”

Menounos says she saw this as “a gift” from the beginning. “I tell people all the time if your car is making a weird noise, you take it to the mechanic. How come when our body is making weird noises, we ignore it? I’m so lucky that I went to the doctor and raised the alarm. Who knows what could have happened? I was hoping this would be the summer I was going to implant an embryo [via IVF]. I would have implanted, that thing would have exploded, and I’d be in surgery with a baby,” she explains. And if there’s one thing a tumour can teach you, it’s to focus on the things that matter. The TV host finishes her run with E! in August and wants to focus on “passion projects,” she says. “I just want to see what I’m supposed to be in this world. I’ve tolerated things that I shouldn’t have, and a lot of women do that

because they feel like they have to take care of everyone. And one of the big things I’ve realised is that it’s OK to be taken care of.” Sharing her story is also a way for Menounos to encourage women to look after themselves. “They have to put themselves first. I want to encourage people to find some stillness in their life so they can listen to their bodies—and hear what’s going on.” n By Julie Jordan Who l 31

In April 2014, schoolgirls Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu survived a horrific kidnapping at the hands of terrorists Boko Haram. Here is the story of their harrowing escape

It was late on the night of April 14, 2014, in the Nigerian town of Chibok, when two armed men burst into the Government Girls Secondary School, where seniors Joy Bishara, then 17, and Lydia Pogu, then 16, were among hundreds of teenage girls in their beds, fast asleep. Carrying guns, the men began herding the frightened girls into a group as more armed men arrived—now shouting “Allahu akbar!” (Arabic for “God is great”), the telltale rallying cry of Nigeria’s ruthless terrorist group Boko Haram. “We were all crying and screaming,” says Joy, recalling how the terrorists started bragging about burning down schools and churches, and slaughtering innocent pastors and students, as they fired their guns into the air. “They told us to keep quiet or else they’re going to kill us.” Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 girls that night, spiriting them away into the dense African bush. Weeks later, in early May, the group released a video showing its leader in fatigues, threatening to sell the girls as slaves—yet another atrocity in the rebels’ ongoing reign of terror. Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009 and has since become a source of fear and chaos. It has massacred

thousands and driven millions from their homes in recent years in a bid to create an Islamic state and wipe out Western influence from the country’s schools. With the kidnapping of this group of girls the world took notice, rallying around the hashtag “Bring Back Our Girls,” which went viral within weeks of the abduction. Politicians and celebrities alike—including Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Ellen DeGeneres and Angelina Jolie— called for the girls’ safe return. Lydia, now 19, and Joy, now 20, were among the few dozen girls who managed to escape that same night. And, while more than 100 girls have since been released as a result of government negotiations with Boko Haram (82 were sent home in exchange for five Boko Haram prisoners in

FEAT25_Boko Haram.lay.indd 42

May), more than 100 girls remain missing. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to bring back all the girls, tweeting in January, “I’m hopeful that soon Chibok community, Nigeria, and indeed the world, will welcome the remaining girls back home.” In the meantime, Lydia and Joy have spent nearly three years carving out a new life in America. With help from the Jubilee Campaign, a Virginia-based non-profit human rights group, they arrived in the US in August 2014. After attending a boarding school for two years in Virginia they transferred to the Canyonville Christian Academy in Oregon last year. On June 3, the girls graduated from the academy and both will attend college at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida.

After growing up in Chibok in modest homes without running water, let alone computers, both say their lives today— and the education and opportunities that lie ahead—seem like “a dream” come true. That dream seemed impossible on that terrifying night at their school in Nigeria. “They say if each girl try to run, they will shoot the girl,” Lydia says, recalling how the terrorists took control, setting fires and looting supplies. “Then we start seeing the burning everywhere.” As the school’s compound went up in flames around them, the men threw stolen food into waiting cars and ordered the girls to follow on foot. They walked fast, some of them without shoes, down a dusty back road to a bridge, where they were all forced to pile into three open-air trucks. “I was thinking, ‘Am I ever going to see my mother again?’ ” says Joy, who remembers “many, many” girls jammed into each vehicle. “They said to live is to enter the truck, to die is to stay outside,” she adds, noting that her truck was so high off the ground, she had to use a small car as a step to climb in. The convoy of trucks and girls roared off, with cars full of armed men surrounding them on all sides. On the trucks the terrified girls frantically discussed jumping. Lydia recalls a friend saying it was better to take the risk than to disappear

want to tell,” says Joy, who ultimately confided in the man, who took them home. Lydia and her friend also found a driver to take them home. Back in Chibok, with the school destroyed and deserted, friends and family feared the worst. At Joy’s home, relatives were comforting her distraught mother when she arrived—dirty and bloodied, her school uniform in shreds. “It was like someone died already,” says Joy, who still carries the deep scars on her legs from that horrific night. “When my mum saw me, she started crying,” says Lydia, adding that she was in so much pain from her wounds, “I felt like I’m not going to be alive again. For almost two weeks I [couldn’t] take a shower.” Over the next few months, they worried that Boko Haram would come back to get them, sometimes sleeping outside where they felt it’d be easier to hide. So when they heard about the chance to finish school in America, they didn’t hesitate. “To pick up their dreams where they left them—in a safe place—was an easy decision,” says Doug Wead, president of the Canyonville Christian Academy. “They’re determined to outwit their captors by turning their grisly nightmare into something hugely triumphant.”

“We are all tired ... We are bleeding, but we keep running”

forever—right before she jumped. Lydia prayed, then followed her friend, landing hard on the ground, a searing pain in her hips as she scrambled up and, right behind her friend, headed blindly into the thick, thorny bushes. “We ran and ran,” she says, “[hoping] we would find our way in the darkness.” Joy was debating whether to jump as well. She heard a girl say it would be better to die there—at least their parents would find a corpse—and felt a surge of courage: “Something is like, ‘Joy, you cannot, and I’m like, yes I can.’ ” She leapt, landing on her stomach before catching her breath and fleeing with two of her classmates into the bush. After that, they just kept running. Dawn broke and Lydia and her friend were covered in blood from thorns, their clothes torn. They came upon a village where people had spent the night hiding in the bushes, fearing their homes would be burnt by Boko Haram. They pointed the girls towards home and told them to “run in a zigzag,” says Lydia, because it would be harder for anyone to shoot them. Meanwhile, Joy and her two classmates— exhausted and afraid to stop—found a road, where they encountered a man on a motorcycle. “We ask him to please take us back home. He ask, ‘Who are you?’ We were scared. We don’t

That transition to teenage life in America has been an exciting challenge for both girls. Both arrived knowing just a little English, which meant they had to learn fast. Joy, whose father forbade her to have a mobile phone while growing up in Chibok, was shocked to see so many kids with their own phones, tablets and gadgets, and wondered if there would ever be an end to the cold weather in Oregon. Lydia, who grew up wearing wrap skirts and traditional dresses, was taken aback by women in pants. “When I first came here, I said I would never wear pants,” she laughs, admitting she loves her skinny jeans—though not American food. Both girls prefer Nigerian spicy noodles and rice to potato chips or pizza. The hardest part has been missing the people back home; neither of the girls have seen their families since August 2014. Joy is the oldest of seven—she has six brothers. Her father works as a policeman, while her mother cares for the family. Lydia has four sisters and three brothers. Her dad farms and works for a local church; her mother cares for the kids. The girls worry about their families as the conflict continues but keep in touch by phone. These days, they’re also putting the painful past behind them and looking ahead to college. (They have a GoFundMe page to help with expenses: gofundme.com/ JoyLydiaChibokGirls —Joy Bishara UniversityFund) Lydia hopes to become a lawyer, and is interested in helping people who have no voice. Joy wants to be doctor. In Nigeria, she saw sick people denied care because they were poor. “What I want to do is save lives,” she says. Because, as she and Lydia know all too well, there are still many lives left to save. During her emotional graduation speech, Joy says, “I forgive the people who hurt me. I have nothing against them. I am praying for the return of my classmates to their parents.” n By Abigail Pesta Who l 43

FALLING INTO IT

“It wasn’t necessarily a lightning bolt for me,” Hamm says of his chosen career. “At a certain point I realised it was a thing I had done more than any other.”

on Hamm sounds like he’s calling from inside a washing machine. Amid heavy rainstorms in Atlanta, Georgia, he’s being driven from the set of his upcoming comedy Tag to the airport for a 24-hour trip to the London premiere of his new heist thriller Baby Driver. “I’m sorry. I hope you can hear me through this,” he says as a flash flood warning blares on his phone. “If you don’t hear from me in the near future, that means I probably ended up in a ditch.” He survived the ride—and, so far, the deluge of a schedule that has him filming and promoting at least a half-dozen movies and TV gigs this year. “It’s a good problem to have,” he says. “You can sleep when you’re dead, I suppose.” The man formerly known as Don Draper is now well into the next chapter of his post-Mad Men career—and figuring out just what it means to be Jon Hamm, A-lister. “The best actors are the ones who don’t forget that it’s meant to be enjoyable,” says Hamm, 46, who has relished roles from Baby Driver’s smooth criminal to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s hilariously demented kidnapper. Still, the thoughtful, privacy-minded actor struggles with what he calls the “disruption” of fame. “It’s a bell that can’t be unrung,” he says. “Your humanity is subsumed into a brand of sorts.” He has also weathered some personal upheaval since Mad Men wrapped in 2015: that year he revealed he had sought treatment for alcohol addiction, and five months later he and his girlfriend of 18 years, actress-writer Jennifer Westfeldt, announced their split. “Like all things that are disruptive, you can either manage it effectively, or sometimes it gets the better of you,” Hamm says of stardom.

“And I think that can happen at any age.” Still, it helps to be a grown-up when fame hits, and Hamm was 36 when he landed his career-making Mad Men role. Before that, the St Louis native (who was raised by his dad, a trucking company manager, after he lost his mother to cancer when he was 10) struggled to find his footing as an actor. Hamm made ends meet by working in restaurants and teaching acting at St Louis’s John Burroughs High School, where one student was his future Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-star Ellie Kemper. While Hamm has successfully shaken up his image with his comedic roles (besides Kimmy, see also 30 Rock, Bridesmaids and Saturday Night Live), his villainous part in Baby Driver is another surprising turn. “I’ve certainly played my fair share of dark characters, but this guy is a straight-up murderer,” says Hamm. “Playing the baddie is a very different thing, and it was fun.” The high-speed driving was a bonus. “You obviously don’t get a chance to do that in real life,” he says. “It’s part of why people get into acting, to play pretend at a very high level.” Meanwhile he’s making peace with the parts of life that are less fun—like dating as a public figure (“It’s really hard,” he told InStyle. “It sucks”) and being followed by photographers and camera phones. “We live in a postsensitivity, post-privacy media landscape,” he laments. “The only way I can be Zen about it is to disengage from it.” He stays away from social media save for one private Instagram account “that I use to follow beautiful places and baby animals and things that make me feel joy,” he says. “I’m incredibly grateful for and happy with the career that I’ve worked for. It’s my job to find the balance.” n By Kara Warner. Reported by Scott Huver

HAPPY DAYS Taylor’s Maltese, Sugar (in Cannes in 1993), travelled the world with her. “I love that photo of Elizabeth dozing. She is so totally in peace,” says Zahedi.

Taylor (circa 1997, with her three Academy Awards) could be very silly and “laugh her head off,” says Zahedi. Once she took up the cause of AIDS patients, “she lost interest in wanting to win another Oscar. She was over that.”

Now, after the five-year anniversary of Taylor’s death at age 79, Zahedi has published My Elizabeth, his intimate portfolio of Taylor’s off-screen life, to benefit the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (visit ETAF.org)—her final passion. The book, which contains many never-before-published photos, opens a window onto the woman behind the movie marquees, husbands, glamour and jewels. “She didn’t give a damn about looking camera-ready,” says Zahedi, 67. “She was very low-key, very hippie, very sweet. And maternal, too—like your fantasy mother, the one who lets you do fun things.” Although Taylor’s four children grew up wary of press intrusions—“She taught us early on to not pay any attention to [tabloids],” her son Christopher Wilding, now 62, told WHO in 2013—her family, including her granddaughter Laela Wilding, welcomes Zahedi’s book of memories that are so like their own. “With grandma, our

She owned scores of precious gems and had the world’s most coveted men wrapped around her little finger. But on the long-ago summer day when Elizabeth Taylor was visiting Andy Warhol’s Montauk, New York, beach house and decided to head into town, she had no need of car and driver. “Let’s hitchhike!” Taylor suggested to her friend, photographer Firooz Zahedi. Recalling the preposterous scene from 1976 in his photographic memoir, My Elizabeth, Zahedi describes the Hollywood legend: unrecognisable in a T-shirt and bell-bottom jeans, on the side of a country road with her thumb out. Soon enough, Taylor and Zahedi were in the back of a ute, with the giggling movie star boasting, “See! It wasn’t that hard, now, was it?” Hitchhiker, hippie, humanitarian and cook: that’s the Elizabeth Taylor Zahedi saw—not only through his 35mm lens but through a 35-year friendship that began when Henry Kissinger tried playing Cupid for Taylor (unsuccessfully, with Zahedi’s diplomat

Taylor always sent handwritten thank you notes and birthday greetings, Zahedi recalls. “As she grew weak towards the end, the notes were typed for her, but they never stopped coming.”

Taylor’s hairdresser and personal assistant Arthur Bruckel (in Persepolis) tagged along on the 1976 tour of Iran.

favourite thing to do was to stay in bed together, just snuggling and chatting and eating lunch and watching movies,” Laela, 46, one of the star’s 14 grandchildren, tells WHO in a rare interview. She and Taylor would talk about boys, play dress-up and browse grandma’s jewellery cupboard, home of the legendary 33-carat Krupp diamond from fifth husband Richard Burton, whom she married twice. “I knew she was famous, but when I was with her, she was larger than life in the most wonderful way—fun and funny and very accepting,” says Laela. Pals at Warhol’s Montauk, New York, home (in 1976) didn’t expect Taylor to join their softball game, Zahedi recalls. “She proved them wrong by picking up a bat, which was nearly her own height, whacking the ball really hard and racing to first base with a triumphant smile.”

epidemic first hit in the 1980s. “She wanted to take care of others, and that motherly energy infused all of her relationships,” says Laela. “She really wanted to break down the stigma of AIDS.” Several years earlier, in 1976, Taylor, then 44, and Zahedi, a former ambassador’s assistant 17 years her junior, met and soon became a playful, platonic twosome who travelled together through his native Iran, her Hollywood home turf, Washington, DC, and more. Taylor encouraged Zahedi to chuck his family’s traditional expectations and make a career of photography, starting as her personal photographer on the set of A Little Night Music. “She basically saved my life,” he says. She was casual, easygoing and quick to laugh—even at ageing. “It wasn’t her looks that she worried about, it was her health,” he adds. The pair’s colourful story might have included romance if only Zahedi hadn’t so fiercely denied rumours in 2006 that he was to be husband No. 9. “That upset her because I said older women shouldn’t marry younger men,” says Zahedi now. “There is always this ridicule about older actresses ... and I didn’t want her to be ridiculed again.” The last time he spoke to Taylor before her death in March 2011, they were mulling a Christmas Eve outing. Zahedi joked about running off to a Vegas wedding chapel. “And she gave me one of those cackling laughs of hers and said, ‘No way, buster.’ Like, you had your chance— and you blew it.” n By Sandra Sobieraj Westfall

Taylor (in 2002) loved to entertain in her Bel-Air backyard. “There was always music playing. Here a song came on that she liked, so she started dancing for the camera.”

friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. This new Spidey, played by Tom Holland, provides vicarious thrills like never before. “The fact that Peter Parker is 15 allows me to have fun with it,” says Homecoming director Jon Watts, who also co-wrote the screenplay. “Yes, there’s a lot of drama and conflict, but more than anything it’s, ‘If you were that age and could do what he can do? That would be really fun.’ ” Homecoming picks up after the events of Civil War, with Peter itching to hang with his mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), and save the world. Instead he is sent home, which means high school back in Queens. In fact,

Peter shares more DNA with John Hughes’s adolescent heroes than some Christopher Nolan crusader. While Spidey indeed ends up facing a supervillain, Vulture (Michael Keaton), he is every bit as invested in winning the favour of the girl he likes in school (Laura Harrier). “That’s what being a teenager is,” Watts says. “Everything is the highest stakes. So whether it’s going to a party or talking to the person at school you have a crush on, or joining the Avengers to fight a supervillain, it’s all at an 11. You haven’t learnt to differentiate yet. That’s a big part of growing up.” The franchise has endured some growing

pains of its own. Way back in 2002, Sony’s Spider-Man, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, had been an industry revelation: the first film to pass $100 million in its opening weekend. But a decade later, the webslinger seemed to peter out (so to speak). A 2012 reboot and its sequel, both starring Andrew Garfield, met with declining box office results and critical shrugs. Marvel, meanwhile, had not been able to get its mitts on its swinging boy hero. At the time of the first movie, Marvel was not its own studio, so Sony owned the rights to the character and held on to them with a

vice grip. As the years passed, Marvel would become a cultural behemoth. With Iron Man in 2008, Marvel Studios launched a cinematic universe populated by many of its most famed characters—but not Spider-Man. In 2014, Sony and Marvel reached a deal. It’s a bright day in September 2016 and the Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and Homecoming team has taken over New York’s then Sony co-chairperson Amy Pascal sat Staten Island Ferry for what will end up being down for lunch and built a bridge for Spidey. one of the film’s biggest scenes. Towards giant studios involved,’ ” Feige says. the end of a gruelling production in which “ ‘Wouldn’t this be cool?’ ” the former gymnast performed It was. Two years later, Marvel a mind-boggling number of his and Sony gave comic-book fans own stunts, he managed to injure what they’d always dreamed of: himself in the most ordinary way. an Avengers movie with a new “I’ve done so much dangerous Spider-Man as its secret weapon. stuff here,” he says cheerfully, “We never thought of it as a third —Jon Watts, director “and then when I do hurt myself, casting,” Feige says. “When we it’s just from falling down the stairs at home.” introduced him in Civil War, it was like— Marvel sifted through more than 7,000 surprise! that-be knew they had found someone special. “Having the charisma to have the camera care that you’re even a speck when you’re on screen with Robert Downey Jr is a tall order,” Pascal says. “It was magical from that very first test.” The young Brit—19 at the time, now 21—had been dancing and acting since childhood, starring in West End’s Billy Elliot and in films like The Impossible. In him, the filmmakers found a kid who possessed the same infectious enthusiasm as his character. “He’s as excited to be playing Peter Parker as Peter Parker is about getting to be Spider-Man,” Watts says. The fact that Holland could backflip on command didn’t hurt either. “Oh yeah, he does that stuff,” Downey Jr says. “But what I remember is that Tom demonstrated a natural internal conflict. It’s hard to get to the real meat and potatoes of what makes [a character] tick. I feel that he’s experienced enough to be able to enjoy all the stuff that’s about to happen to him.” It started happening to him a little faster than anyone planned. Holland discovered he’d been cast in the film on Instagram, thanks to

an internet leak. The news broke on a Friday, and by Monday he was on the Civil War set. It was there he met his Homecoming director, Watts, who had gone through his own long audition process. “We sat in my trailer and looked at each other like, ‘What is happening to our lives?’ ” Holland says. “Jon is like, ‘I’m directing the next Spider-Man, and I’ve only ever made one movie.’ And I’m like, ‘Dude. I’m playing Spider-Man, and I’m 19 years old.’ ” More than a year later, he’s still just as wowed by the whole thing. “This has truly been a dream come true,” Holland says. “The most surprising thing about it all is that it’s not only met my expectations but exceeded them.” To help prep, Holland briefly went undercover at the Bronx High School of Science, attending classes using an alias. The film’s version of Peter’s high school is populated by students who, laudably, are as diverse as they would be in a real urban school. In many ways, Homecoming is a love letter to the other New York that exists beyond the isle of Manhattan. As in the original 1960s comics in which he debuted, Peter is an outerborough kid, and Watts’ film pays homage to that—from a soundtrack that features Queens rockers the Ramones to a scene that includes an only-in-New York bodega cat and buildings tagged by spray-paint art. “Peter Parker is from Queens,” Watts says. “All the other [Spider-Man] movies were in Times Square or the Financial District. That’s the tourist version of New York.”

Manhattan represents the uptown playground of Tony Stark and where the Avengers battled aliens in 2012’s The Avengers. Homecoming picks at a thread from that blockbuster to set its plot in motion. In this film, Peter has grown up with that timeline. He knows about the existence of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America—and he vividly remembers how they saved his city from destruction. This is also true of Adrian Toomes, aka Vulture. Toomes is a blue-collar businessman who runs a salvage company contracted to clean up the mess in Manhattan after the battle at the end of The Avengers—a huge, lucrative job. But he loses it courtesy of Tony Stark. Tired of being jerked around by the one-percenters, Toomes steals pieces of alien tech from the wreckage to build his own arsenal. That he’s played by a man who knows his way around a superhero costume, Michael Keaton, gives things a nice twist. “Michael won’t even call him a villain,” says Feige. The movie created several full-circle moments like that for the people who made it. Watts was a student at NYU when the first Spider-Man was filming. He would watch the bright lights blazing on the set from his dorm room. And Feige was on that set as a young production executive just starting his Marvel career. “My first week of being employed at Marvel, the script came in for [2002’s] SpiderMan,” he says. “That movie is what launched us and allowed us to become Marvel Studios. Not to get too sappy, but to have these 17 years bookended by Spider-Man?” He pauses. “It feels amazing.” A homecoming, indeed. n By Sara Vilkomerson

Peter’s best friend and Spidey secret keeper, Ned feels at his most confident in a fedora and is almost as excited about Peter’s alter ego as Peter is.

MICHELLE ZENDAYA

The Disney Channel star is almost unrecognisable as the grungy Michelle, a snarky smarty-pants member of Peter’s Academic Decathlon team.

FLASH TONY REVOLORI Traditionally a bullying jock, the new Flash is also a teammate on the Academic Decathlon team, though he is always getting bested by Peter. LIZ ALLAN LAURA HARRIER

One of the prettiest girls at school and the object of Peter’s affection, she has an intense admiration for Spider-Man.

AUNT MAY MARISA TOMEI As Tony Stark says, Peter has an unusually attractive aunt, and the film takes great pleasure in acknowledging it. ADRIAN TOOMES

MICHAEL KEATON The inverse of Stark in almost every way, Toomes has more in common with Queens-bred Peter—even when they find themselves at odds.

WHO’s GUIDE TO THE LATEST COSMETIC CONFECTIONS AND TRENDS

BROW NOW

F

Lily Collins concedes that in order to blend in as a teenager she used to pluck her now-envied brows.

“Even if you wear no makeup but fill in your brows, you will always look put-together. Eyebrows complete your face”

From filling to feathering, there’s a trend to up your brow game

or those seeking youthful looks, strong, full brows are your first port of call. If you’re not genetically blessed with the perfect pair, follow these simple tips from beauty blogger Amy Maree Comber and fake your way to A-list brows. Eyebrows frame the face, and the shape is important to create symmetry. Look at your face shape and choose the opposite to your brows. “If you have a round face, try an angular brow vertically, which will add stronger definition to a softer face. If you had a long face, opt for a longer brow, in a horizontal direction, to give the illusion of a more proportioned face,” says Comber. If you’re still unsure, experiment with some brow stencils. The current trend is the Insta-brow: “It’s a heavily filled-in brow that starts off light and leads into a dark tail, creating an ombré finish,” says Comber. A soft, natural, full brow is always popular; seek inspiration from stars such as Emma Watson. “Micro-blading or feathering has seen a surge in popularity, but it’s a more permanent look,” notes Comber. For a less-committed brow, look at layering different products and textures to create strokes that mimic the natural brow hairs.

BABY DRIVER

STARRING: Ansel Elgort, Jon Hamm Baby (The Fault in Our Stars’ Elgort) is the young getaway driver for a gang of thieves—serious, short-tempered, trigger-happy professionals. Baby is good at his job, even if he seldom removes the iPod buds from his ears to clear the rock music from his head. If nothing else, Driver is the ultimate comment on how we use mobile devices to lay down an inner soundtrack. It also has a roaring fendercruncher of a wrap-up, as Baby tries to escape the gang’s

From the moment his hero Baby moves with funk and grace to “Bellbottoms” from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, director Edgar Wright has invited the audience to share earbuds with him and his propulsive soundtrack of 30 hot tunes. (Out now)

most menacing member, Buddy (funny-surly Hamm). At times you may wish that someone else were behind the wheel other than the bland Elgort. The role requires an offbeat: it could use the crazy intensity of early Tom Cruise or the fawn-like sweetness of the late Anton Yelchin. Luckily the rest of the cast (Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Lily James) are perfect. Tune in to them and you’ll have a blast. (Out now; for more on Jon Hamm, see p. 44.) Who l 73

SHANE JACOBSON

EAST WOOD, PAGE, HARTMAN, MARS: GET TY IMAGES (4)

The newly engaged ‘Kenny’ star (see p. 90) hosts entertainment show ‘Little Big Shots’ (Starts Sun., July 16, 7 PM; Seven).

Why do you love this show? Two main reasons. There’s no judges and there’s no losers. It’s such a fresh change to have a show that is a celebration of kids’ talent. So what will we see? Well that’s the thing, because it’s not just singing and dancing. You can see anything. Some have a bizarre skill, some are people who have broken records by doing odd or obscure things—it really is a mixed bag. When we put the call out for people to come in and show us what they could do, we were more surprised than anyone. You don’t know what’s coming up next, there’s no way you can guess. Are you excited for your kids to see the show? Yeah! I did a film called Oddball, which they’ve seen, but there’s so many films and TV shows that

I’ve done that are just not suitable. I’ve got young children, I’ve got four and they’re all under the age of 11. This is absolutely my favourite thing that I’ve done, in that I can sit down with the family and watch together. I’m really excited because I get to have fun here in the studio and I get to have fun when I go home and watch it with my kids. What would have been your special talent? I was told by my father and my mother my first performance was when I was about 9 months old. I walked into a room where they were having a dinner party. I pulled my nappy down, sat on the floor and let some wind go. On the polished floorboards it apparently went, “Ba ba ba ba bap.” I stood up, smiled, pulled my pants up and ran out. So that was my first performance. The windy bottom. Based on that, I don’t think I would have been on this show. [Laughs] Would you do Dancing with the Stars? Or MasterChef? I’m not that good a cook. I’m not that good a dancer. Do I dance and do I cook? I do. But I don’t think people need to see it. Or taste it!

MOVIE

THE BEGUILED

STARRING: Nicole Kidman

A wounded Union soldier named McBurney (Colin Farrell) receives shelter, medical attention and many soft dove coos of longing from the ladies of Miss Martha Farnsworth’s Academy for Girls. As he slyly seduces both Miss Farnsworth (Kidman) and her assistant Edwina (a superb Kirsten Dunst), McBurney thinks he has lucked into a confederacy of virginal dunces. He hasn’t. Director Sofia Coppola, remaking the 1971 gothic flick, underplays the story’s melodramatic extremes, concentrating instead on creating an atmosphere of hushed, rarefied intensity. In its oblique but fascinating way it is an allegory of women subjugated by men—a prettier, genteel Handmaid’s Tale. Coppola, who won Best Director at Cannes, is a singular talent: she drapes the movie with a heavy layer of moss that somehow makes you that much more aware of the tree. (Out now)

PRIME SUSPECT: 1973

STARRING: Stefanie Martini No-one really needs a prequel to Prime Suspect, the British crime series that made an international star of Helen Mirren. Her performance as Jane Tennison, a middle-aged woman rising to the top of a sexist police force thanks to her fierce integrity, was so fully realised you could imagine the character’s life all the way back to nappies. But Martini isn’t bad as a 22-year-old Jane in 1973, and the initial case has a fine cast of actors (Ruth Sheen, Alun Armstrong) looking shifty. (Starts Fri., July 21, 8.30 PM; ABC)

TABOO

STARRING: Tom Hardy

Hardy has a knack for playing characters who have become unhinged (see The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road). So it’s no surprise he is captivating in this dark and trippy miniseries, which he co-created. Hardy stars as an unapologetic outsider who, after years spent in Africa, returns home to stuffy 1814 England with an air of mystery, possible skill in the dark arts and a determination to find his father’s killer. Young Tim knows that the arrival of a baby brother will feel like a hostile takeover of the family—and it is, literally. The kid wears a suit, arranges meetings with other infants (the adults call them “playdates”) and talks in fluent corporate speak (“Where’s HR when you need ’em?”). Baldwin’s voice is hilariously perfect: hushed, commanding, frequently unnerving. It’s 30 Rock-a-Bye. (Out now on digital, DVD and Blu-ray)

WHAT YOUR STARS SAY THIS WEEK, JULY 17–23

ARIES

MARCH 20–APRIL 18

July is not going down as the greatest, but at least things are moving. Maybe not in the direction you would like, but they are moving. The Sun and Mars both angle unpredictable Uranus, so although not everything will go to plan this week, you could end up with some extremely positive outcomes. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Out-of-the-blue developments could have you running around in circles. Maybe an event is brought forward, perhaps circumstances have altered other people’s plans or it could be that the phone never seems to stop ringing and the demands on your time and skills are ever greater. Whatever the pressures, avoid making a snap decision. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

It’s great to be in love and removed from reality, but if there is a chance you are basing an important decision on your hopes or fears, get a second opinion. Not only may the situation alter from the way it appears now, but your own feelings could change. Decisions made in a rush are invariably regretted. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Unbeknown to you, a situation may have been heading in the wrong direction and it is in your best interests to discover this now. You have a chance to regroup and set off in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS

Are you still stuck on that famous fence? It is time to jump into the unknown, take a proverbial leap of faith. For many Librans mid-July is unsettling and you may not be able to see where events are leading, but have a little faith—today’s upset is tomorrow’s opportunity; today’s inconvenience, tomorrow’s blessing. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

The more you embrace the new and the different the better it is going to be. Of course, you cannot guarantee that a new situation is going to work out perfectly but what you can be sure of is that if you keep blocking change, eventually you will be forced out of your safe position and without time to pack your bags! For more, phone 1902 261 655.

With relationships continuing to take the spotlight a decision over a love affair could be on the cards. Whether you’re in or you’re out, whether someone makes you an offer you cannot refuse or withdraws their allegiance, your love-life, if not a lot more besides, could look very different by the end of this month. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

CAPRICORN

Should you be expecting to put your feet up and watch the clouds roll by, you’re probably in for a surprise. A message could change your long or short-term agenda, and if you’re not paying attention you could miss an important signal. You may be the rock of the zodiac, but that doesn’t mean you cannot be shaken and stirred. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

The next four weeks could prove to be a pivotal time for relationships in general and love affairs in particular. This week, however, Uranus is in charge so you may not have as much control as you would like—you’re going to have to go with the flow. Could be fun, although I’d recommend putting on your seatbelt. News, views & feuds

KIRSTEN DUNST

The Beguiled actress, 35, talks life after child stardom, and wedding plans, with WHO’s Kara Warner. You started working at age 3. Did you always want to be an actor?

UMA THURMAN

The actress celebrated the July 8 birthday of daughter Maya (far left), 19, with son Levon, 15, in Dublin.

I was that little girl who made home movies and put on plays with my family members. I definitely always had it in me. My mum is very creative and my dad is very sensitive—it was a good combo to make an actor. What did you love about filming your new movie The Beguiled in Louisiana?

We ate our way through New Orleans! We’d go to Frenchmen Street a lot, where all the music is. Elle [Fanning] would sleep over at my house. She’s like a little sister to me. It’s just a good group of women that [director] Sofia Coppola surrounds herself with.

What do you love to do when you’re not working?

I’m very good at bed days—eating, watching movies and television in bed. I love a bed day. What’s the best thing about working in the same business as your fiancé (and former Fargo co-star) Jesse Plemons?

ZAC EFRON

The actor and huge Chance the Rapper fan posted this July 8 pic of him beside a painting of his idol, then captioned it with a simple high-five emoji.

Having time off. With our job you can work three months intensely, and then you have a lot of time to do whatever you want to do. What excites you most about your future?

I bought a house. I’m redoing that, and I’m going to get married at some point, so I’ve got to plan that! Fun things I’ve watched my friends do, I now get to do.

FROM LEFT: INSTAGRAM.COM (3); FOCUS FEATURES; GET TY IMAGES (2)

Is there a plan for the wedding and then kids?

I’m not in any rush. I’m very relaxed when it comes to those kinds of things. I’m very happy.

HAIR WE GO AGAIN! These actors seem to defy male pattern baldness with top looks that have fans scratching their heads

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY The actor told the US Today Show he had been losing his locks since 1999 but has been using the customised product line Regenix to restore his hairline.

BILLY BOB THORNTON From the SAG Awards in 1997 (near right) to this year’s Golden Globes, the Fargo star may have been the beneficiary of a hair transplant, experts say.

On the cult-hit status of Suits (Season 7 premieres Thurs., July 13, at 8.30 PM on Universal Channel), Rafferty tells Hoffman, “I remember you convinced me this was something.”

JEREMY PIVEN The Mr Selfridge star was balding in 1995 (far left), but TMZ pics in 2010 showed a long head scar that may be a clue to his current fuller look.

HUGH LAURIE The Night Manager star (in 2011, near right, and in 2016) tweeted in 2013, “Hair disappearing from my head like sand from an hourglass. Although not growing out of my feet, which is a relief.”

ONE OF A KIND

These cossies make waves by being odd ducks out of water

Once label Beloved unveiled its “sexy chest” swimsuit, other unique cossies found their moment in the sun. While model Ashley Graham (above left) posed in a rhinestone

bikini, a New York restaurant made a suit out of real pizza (cost? $10,000!) to mark National Bikini Day. Not to be outdone, Beloved came back with a Trump one-piece. Or is it a covfefe?

Double talk

“We’ve been friends for years,” says Rafferty of Gabriel Macht (far left, with co-stars Hoffman and Meghan Markle).

Legal eagles Donna Paulsen and Louis Litt are all witty comebacks and catchphrases. Offscreen, Suits stars Sarah Rafferty, 44, and Rick Hoffman, 47, are just as engaging.

The star took time out for her own shoots on the set of her TV show Shades of Blue in New York (left, in 2015 and, right, with sister Lynda on April 28) and on American Idol (below, both in 2015).

Hemsworth

SURF’S UP!

Chris Hemsworth, 33, may control thunder when he’s playing Norse god Thor, but in real life the Byron Bay, NSW, resident rules the waves, attested his friend Luke Munro. According to Brisbane’s Courier Mail, Munro, a Seven reporter and former pro surfer, told attendees at a function for the Seven Network’s Gold Coast News that Hemsworth buys a new surfboard every week. “I have never met a more enthusiastic surfer,” he said. Munro would know—Hemsworth posted an Instagram pic of him with his pal sitting on a beach “tellin’ stories” on June 28.

GO TEAM

Singer Lorde, 23, is still very much Team Taylor Swift. She explained to Seven’s Sunrise that although she didn’t know all of Swift’s friends, being a member of Swift’s squad “was never some exclusive club or secret society.” Nonetheless, “I want to say one more time that Taylor had been there for me in all my dark and light moments these past five years,” she added. “All of them.”

LOOSE TALK

Andrew Garfield, 33, scored backlash from the LGBTQ community when he said he prepared for his role in the London revival of Angels in America by watching every season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and concluded, “I am a gay man right now just without the physical act—that’s all.” Out actor Scott Evans tweeted, “You’re a talented guy, but you seem to be completely oblivious to what is coming out of your mouth.” Garfield

What were your first impressions of each other? Hoffman When I walked out of the trailer to film the pilot and I saw her, I was like, “She’s gorgeous!” But I was trying to be the too-cool guy, so I said something really lame, like, “You’re really going to enjoy it in there!” Rafferty I was the last person to join the cast and you said something that made me feel so immediately included in that moment. The star of TV’s True Blood and Elementary died, aged 39, in New York on July 8 from heart failure stemming from a longterm battle with drugs and alcohol. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, his family said, “After many stints in rehab, Nelsan attempted to withdraw from alcohol on his own ... During his withdrawal he had a blood infection, his kidneys shut down, his liver was swollen, his blood pressure plummeted and his dear sweet heart raced out of control.” The actor and playwright from Illinois, who’d kept his struggle private, was a “kind soul,” the statement said. “His family ... believes that in death he would want his life to serve as a cautionary tale in an attempt to help others.” Ellis leaves behind one son, Breon.
