Halloween may be a challenge for college students as they tend to have limited time and funds to put together a costume. Here are some easy do-ityourself costume ideas!

What you will need to channel your inner scrubby is about 16 yards of tulle in whichever color you prefer, a dress that matches the color, some string and a stretchy material for the bands — nylons or stretchy headbands will work for this. To learn how to actually make your loofah costume, check out this video at youtube.com/watch?v=rqVk1Q8y2gw. Loofah media-cache-pinimg.org

This is a funny and simple costume for a gentleman. Wear a simple black suit and tie with a white shirt. Next, choose your favorite Mayhem scenario from the Allstate commercials to theme the rest of the costume around. A classic one would be to hold small pink hand weights with a pink sweatband across the forehead. “I’m a hot babe out jogging,” anyone?

For this simple costume, which is bound to get some laughs, just tape an old cereal box or a cereal logo to your shirt. Hold a plastic knife and get some fake blood. Splatter the blood on your shirt, arms, neck and face and ta-da! You are a walking pun, and a “cereal” killer. Cereal Killer Ashley Koenig/Photographer

To become the beloved 90s game, Twister, simply dress in all white. Then cut out different colored construction paper circles and tape them all over your body. “Right foot yellow,” anyone?

To be a bunch of grapes, just wear some purple or green tights and a matching long-sleeve shirt. Then pin matching, blown-up balloons all over your body. This costume is sure to become some fun at a party when people begin to pop your “grapes.”

Top 5 haunted attractions to brave this Halloween season One of the best ways to spend a chilly October night is by visiting an adrenaline-boosting haunted house. Central Illinois and the surrounding areas offer tons of spooky haunted houses, hayrack rides, creepy walking trails and more.

Compiled by Melanie Lowe Senior Staff MCT Campus

5.

If you’re looking to get seriously spooked this Halloween, take a trip to the Haunted Infirmary at Bartonville Insane Asylum in Bartonville. Set on a historic hospital ground, this haunted house is filled with deadly creatures who will haunt your every move. The Haunted Infirmary is open every Friday and Saturday through the month of October. Tickets are $15.

4.

3. Henry Street Horrors in Pontiac will leave

you feeling frightened. At Henry Street Horrors, you can wander aimlessly through a chilling haunted house and a perplexing maze. The lack of direction will have you second-guessing your every move. If you’re looking for something a little less terrifying, check out the fun hayrack rides. Tickets are $10.

Six Flag’s annual Fright Fest is guaranteed to please your Halloween cravings. Visit the park and be chased by ghoulish monsters, zombies and clowns. Once the clock hits 6 p.m., the park’s Fright by Night event begins, releasing nearly 200 zombies into the park. This year, Fright Fest will feature a blackout maze, a new scare zone with creepy scarecrows and six haunted walk-throughs. Fright Fest has something for everyone. Tickets range from $32-50 depending on the night.

If you’re looking for a mildly scary experience and don’t want to travel too far from campus, check out the Haunted Trail located right here in Normal. The Constitution Trail will be lined with spooky sound and lighting effects, creepy creatures and gory displays. This is the perfect event to visit with a large group of friends. The bigger the crowd the safer you’ll feel … maybe. This haunting is the most affordable at only $1 per person.

1.

Located in Chillicothe, Spider Hill at Three Sisters Park is nothing short of a Halloween haven. Spider Hill is home to Massacre Mansion, an 8,000-squarefoot haunted house and the Trail of Terror, a bloodcurdling tour through the dark woods. This year, Spider Hill is introducing the Zombie Invasion, where you act like a zombie hunter and shoot zombies with a paintball gun. If that doesn’t sound like a Halloween dream come true, I don’t know what does. Tickets are $10 for the house and trail, and Zombie Invasion tickets are $15.

University Farm LEXINGTON, ILLINOIS

The entire field has 36 hybrids of corn used to study how different insecticides affect the crop yield. After the corn is harvested, the farmers weigh the crop in the corn bins to measure the yield of each insecticide.

Several private companies have shown interest in collaborating in research in the new facilities. Sean Jordal, agronomist, works with ISU to research and aid with seed and insecticide application.

Jeff Bender, combine driver, plows the fields at the University Farm on Monday. Every four rows of corn are administered a different insecticide.

The University Farm composts all manure produced on the farm to reduce the odor and environmental impact of livestock waste.

Jason Lindbom, assistant research technician of processing the newborn litter, rigs a system from a truck into the area where the pigs are kept to distribute the feed.

The main goal of the University Farm is to educate students. This is a function of the farm due to many students’ limited farm experience.

Q&A

by Quinn Arno Wermeling Staff Writer

Micky Rivera Guitarist of the MisFetts

I recently learned of a local band that covers Misfits songs and accompanies them with “Star Wars”-themed lyrics. The band is called, fittingly, the MisFetts. I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to chat with MisFetts guitarist Micky Rivera, a senior music education major. How long have you been playing guitar? I’ve been playing guitar since I was 14. I’m 24 now. So 10 years. I’ve been playing guitar for the MisFetts for just about over a year now.

Are you a founding member of the MisFetts? I’m not. It used to be a two-piece band with just a singer, who played guitar, and the drummer. The way it came about was they did open mic night stuff and it got to the point where they were kind of running out of material, so they started covering the Misfits and the singer, Adam, decided to start using his own lyrics. Sometimes he would just say words that rhymed, but eventually it got to the point where he was just singing about “Star Wars” the whole time. So that’s how the MisFetts came about.

Do the MisFetts play a lot of local shows? Surprisingly, we don’t. They’re [the band members] all from Bloomington-Normal; I’m the only one who’s not of the four of us. We usually play in Chicago.

How do you feel about the music scene here at ISU? I know very little about it. Every time I go out to see bands it’s usually in Bloomington. But Firehouse is great. Every time I go there to listen to music I have a good time.

Been to any house shows? I threw a house show last year and it was amazing. I just could never do it again. My house got trashed.

Ashley Koenig/Photographer

In the middle of his senior year as a music education major, Micky Rivera balances his time as a student and as the guitarist for The Misfetts.

So it goes. What is your favorite “Star Wars” film and Misfits song?

Tell me about the MisFetts lyric writing process.

My favorite movie is obviously “The Empire Strikes Back.” My favorite Misfits song is a song called “Bruiser.” It’s really catchy. It’s always stuck in my head and I’m always singing and playing along to it.

We keep it silly. We know we’re not a serious band: we’re singing about “Star Wars” and playing horror punk. We just have fun with it.

I’ve noticed recently that the Misfits fiend skull logo is on everything… Yeah, it’s like the peace sign…

Exactly! How do you feel about that? When I first started with the MisFetts, every time I saw the logo, I’d think “Oh! Maybe I can strike up a conversation with this person and tell them about my band!” But half the time they don’t even know what I’m talking about.

“Don’t Open 'Til Doomsday” is the name of a Misfits song. One day we were driving to a show in Michigan and we were trying desperately to come up with lyrics to this song because we really wanted to play it, but we didn’t have anything good. And then I’m like, “’How about ‘Don’t Force Choke Padme?’” At first we just kind of laughed about it, but finally we decided that was the only thing that worked. If it works, it works; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.

Do you guys dress up or anything? Do you wear Stormtrooper or Boba Fett outfits or

anything like that? The singer is in the Mandalorian Mercs Nexus Clan. It’s a fan club where you create your own Boba Fett armor — you can style it however you want — you just have to buy a Boba Fett helmet and the amour, and you make the rest yourself out of cloth and plastic. He wore that once on stage but it got really hot. Our drummer is also joining the Mandalorian Mercs. We had a show at the Castle Theatre last February where we had four Mandalorian Mercs come in full Boba Fett armor. And members of the 501st — which is a “Star Wars” fan club where you make your own suit of amour, but it has to be from the movie — they came too. So we had like a dozen Stormtroopers — we even had a Darth Vader — all on stage rocking out with us. It was pretty sweet.

The Avett Brothers change sound with new record fans love and expect from The Avett Brothers. There are songs which feature classic characteristics of the band — such as the banjo, the cello and stripped-down falsetto. Of particular strength are the songs “Bring Your Love,” “Morning Song,” “Good To You” and “Apart From Me” — and there are songs which feel “poppy” and written solely for radio play with grand instrumentation and bouncy melodies. It’s an odd marriage — one that is not completely unsuccessful but off-putting Gary Friedman/Los Angeles Times/MCT all the same. Scott Avett, left, and his brother, Seth, are The Avett Brothers. I was under the impression that it would be a reworking of one of the band’s most popular songs, similar to the its release of a “sentimental version” of the song “Swept Away.” Instead, it was a live rendition of the song as it has always sounded. I am unsure as to why The Avett Brothers chose to take up space on their studio album with

Though it is difficult to review a band at a time that feels so transitional, I cannot help but feel a little let down by “Magpie and the Dandelion.” The Avett Brothers is and will continue to be my favorite bands, and there is so much that I enjoy on this new album. I just find myself looking at it like I would an old friend who might be going through a hard time.

McConaughey plays unique role in upcoming film Kelley Bowles Reporter

The upcoming movie “Dallas Buyers Club,” will be released Nov. 1. It features Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner and several others, and, for many reasons, is gaining attention before it has been released. Here are five interesting facts that help explain what all of the buzz is about.

1. Matthew McConaughey’s ex-

treme weight loss: The actor, who has the lead role in the movie, had to lose a shocking 38 pounds to play a man diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS. McConaughey told E News! that he is planning to eat a halfpound cheeseburger when the

filming is over. The actor has been on a strict cardio workout and diet, and is now barely recognizable, weighing only 143 pounds. I think many viewers will agree he is much nicer to look at in “Magic Mike” than in this movie.

2. This movie is based on a true

story: McConaughey plays the part of the real Ron Woodroof, a man who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1986. Woodroof was told he had a short time to live and decided to do something with his remaining time. He began researching different drugs that could put off the disease and found these different drugs around the world. He began the Dallas Buyers Club in 1988 and it flourished. He ran the business and distributed out

of his Oak Lawn, Texas apartment. Patients came to him for medicine and for a while it was all under the radar of the FDA. Woodroof always claimed that his business was for the patients, not the profit. He died of HIV/AIDS six years after his diagnoses in 1992.

3. Jared Leto’s shocking transfor-

mation: Jared Leto is the lead vocals, rhythm guitar and songwriter for the band 30 Seconds to Mars and later turned to acting. He is best known for his roles in “Fight Club” and “Mr. Nobody.” In “Dallas Buyers Club,” Leto plays a transgender woman with HIV/AIDS, working with McConaughey’s character to smuggle drugs from Mexico to the U.S. His dramatic change in appearance and incredible act-

Matthew McConaughey at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards in 2011. ing has put him on the 2014 Oscar’s prediction list, and Ashton Kutcher calls it his “‘Million Dollar Baby’ moment.” Watch the trailers; you won’t recognize Leto when you see him.

4. Jared Leto now appreciates women and heels: Leto told Cosmopolitan in a recent interview that he has learned a lot since landing the role as a transgender woman. This is his first role in five years, and he met with several transgender women to get into character. Leto told Cosmo he saw them as his teachers and they taught him how to live as his character, Rayon. He is calling this most recent role “the role of a lifetime.” He also said every man should try wearing high heels because it gives men a deeper appreciation for women. Although I don’t want to see men in Steve Maddens anytime soon, I will say I like Leto’s advice.

5. McConaughey inspired Leto:

Jared Leto took a five year break from the big screen after his role in “Mr. Nobody” and focused on his band. However, when the 41-yearold was presented with the part he said he could not pass it up. He saw the dedication from McConaughey and said he was doing something “spectacular” with his life, and he wanted to be a part of it. He decided to take on the role and noted the script as “amazing.” Jennifer Garner has told several magazines she is in “awe” by the two actors in this film and that both are predicted to win several awards for their roles. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, I suggest looking it up. The two-minute trailer is intriguing enough, but the transformations are jaw-dropping. The film looks like a great rebound for McConaughey after “Magic Mike” and you can bet I will be at the theater when it premieres.

Baillon serves up success ISU women’s tennis player harnessed a title in her initial season as a Redbird ryann hoffenberg Reporter

Redskins name change: not a big deal ZACK FULKERSON Sports Columnist

Freshman Madeliene Baillon has already earned a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) title and shows no signs of slowing down now. In early October, just a few months into her college tennis career, Baillon walked away from the MVC Individual Championships in St. Louis, Mo. with a title. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to win and I was trying not to put too much pressure on myself because I was coming in as a freshman,” Baillon said. “I was saying that I would try my best and the outcome would be whatever it was.” As the daughter of a former Illini tennis player, Baillon has been playing tennis most of her life, including throughout her four years at St. Thomas More High School in Champaign. Both of her parents were present to see Baillon win her title and were extremely proud to see all of their daughter’s hard work pay off. “I love having both of my parents around when I compete,” Baillon said. “My dad is very supportive and my mom is good to calm down the nerves.” Transitioning from high school tennis to college tennis has been a big step for Baillon, primarily due to the time commitment and balancing act involving schoolwork and athletics. “Tennis is great because it makes me stay on top of all my work and teaches me how to balance my time,” Baillon said. Alongside her, offering encouragement and making her transition easier, are Baillon’s fellow Redbird teammates. Baillon describes the decorum on the courts as whoever is not playing will be walking around cheering and offering tips. Baillon has become especially close with fellow freshman Sierra Stone, with whom she can share experiences and hardships unique to freshmen on the team. “It’s nice to know I’m not the only one dealing with certain things,” Baillon said. Although many players strive for an accomplishment such as an MVC title, this early win has not caused Baillon to hit the breaks on her efforts on the courts. “I make sure that I push myself because I showed myself and my team that I am able to accomplish these goals and [the title] will always be there,” Baillon said. “As long as I go out there and

She placed in the top-10 individually and placed third in doubles with her partner Heather Nisbet. “It’s a big compliment to [Baillon] to have had such a good weekend because she has been playing so well so far,” Chris Hoover, head women’s tennis

Stinson finalist for CLASS Award

VOLLEYBALL

ISU soccer

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Illinois State soccer senior Anna Stinson has been named one of 10 finalists nationally for the women’s soccer Senior CLASS Award. Originally named one of 30 candidates Aug. 21, Stinson was voted a finalist by a media committee. The winner will be determined by a combination of fan, media and Division I head coaches’ votes, and will be announced at the 2013 NCAA Women’s College Cup in Anna December. Fan voting is open now through Nov. 25, and Stinson fans can vote for up to three finalists daily. Stinson has started all 14 matches this season for the Redbirds, and has tallied five points on one goal and three assists. Currently in her third season as a captain, Stinson has been a mainstay in the ISU lineup over the past three-plus seasons, starting a total of 62 contests. She is a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, two of them firstteam choices, in addition to being named to the NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region Second Team in 2011. Stinson has tallied 11 goals and 16 assists, ranking fourth on the program’s all-time list in the latter category. With Stinson maintaining the midfield, the Redbirds have posted two of the program’s three highest goal tallies the past two seasons. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring. Premier Sports Management manages the award. The other nine finalists are: Aubrey Bledsoe (Wake Forest), Vanessa DiBernardo (Illinois), Jonelle Filigno (Rutgers), Kristen Hamilton (Denver), Maya Hayes (Penn State), Holly Hein (Michigan), Elizabeth Hoerner (Navy), Kassey Kallman (Florida State) and Kealia Ohai (North Carolina).

coach, said. Although Baillon won her title as an individual, she does not take all the credit. “I wouldn’t have been able to [win the title] without the support and the push of my team, so it is definitely looked at as a team effort even though to others it is looked at as an individual title,” Baillon said. The Redbirds begin their spring season against Eastern Illinois University on Jan. 24th.

Everybody is talking about it. Curt Menefee and the boys were talking about it on FOX NFL Sunday. The NFL’s beloved commissioner, Roger Goodell, recently gave a public statement about it. Amidst government shutdown woes, President Obama even found time to say that if he owned the Washington Redskins, he would have the name changed. The Washington Post says its no longer a matter of “if,” but “when” the D.C.-based team will retire the mascot that the team has held since they resided in Boston for four years before relocating to the nation’s capital in 1937. This is not a new controversy. It seems like every time that there is a slow news week the topic comes up. Various legal challenges have snaked their way through the court system since at least 1992, but the logo and nickname has been consistently upheld. Four years ago, the Supreme Court denied to hear an appeal from a group of American Indians to have the trademark rescinded. All of the controversy surrounding Native American-related team mascots has been a topic of debate since the '60s. Americans are pretty far from evenly split on the issue. In fact, a poll from USA Today earlier this year found overwhelming support amongst the public. A full 79 percent of Americans thought that the Redskins should keep their name. If that isn’t convincing enough, the support (or at least indifference) from the Native American community is similarly impressive. A 2002 survey from Sports Illustrated found 79 percent of American Indians had no objection to the name. The National Annenberg Election Survey found that 90 percent of American Indians were not bothered by the name. Naming sports teams is not done willy-nilly. There is a sense of dignity which comes with naming the team. Think about some of the other team names in the NFL: the Bears, the Giants, the Buccaneers, the Titans. Notice that no team is named the Sloths, the Bunny Rabbits, the Ballet Dancers or the Earthworms. Team names, especially in football, are meant to reflect the team’s strength. Power and fortitude, determination and perseverance, these are what’s in a name for team. It would be completely absurd to give the team a name which is meant to be derogatory. It’s worth noting that the term “Redskin” has been used in a negative context for sometime, at least outside of the sporting world. Nobody can deny that Native American people experienced hardships. But again, I contend that the naming of a sports team is meant as a badge of honor, dedicated to those hardships, rather than a mockery of them. Individuals of varying backgrounds have different opinions on the appropriateness of the word. Good faith views are held on both sides. All that being said, if the team were to decide to change it’s name, I wouldn’t be surprised. Nor would I care; though I’m certain that there are people who would protest any change. Redskins owner Dan Snyder seems less than keen on a change, but with radio ad campaigns criticizing the name running in every city the 'Skins play in this season, the clock is ticking. One way or another, I don’t think the name change is a big deal … at all. If they do, they do. If they don’t, they don’t. C’est la vie.
