Brent Brummer, a graduate student in the project management program and undergrad in graphic communication, decided to brainstorm T-shirt ideas for Homecoming with his friends. His apparel available online is gray with elk antlers saying “Redbirds.” The back of the shirts say “HOMECOMING 15.” “Since I have some experience with graphic design, I came up with the design (last year) and we had the shirts printed. They were the same design as the ones I’m selling this year, except it said ’14 on the back instead of ’15,” Brummer said Brummer created the shirt design with no initial intention to sell them, but people began approaching him asking where he got his shirt. “So a year went by and I had kind of forgotten about the idea. But for the first football game of the year against Iowa, I went to the pub to watch it and a guy came up and asked me where I got my shirt. That’s when I decided I wanted to sell them to students.” Visit www.isuhomecomingapparel.bigcartel.com for more details on Brummer’s apparel and to place orders.

New director marches onto Big Red Gavin Smith looks forward to the intensified school spirit of ISU Homecoming HOLLY PETROVICH Editor-in-Chief

If you’ve ever lived in West Campus, then you’ve most likely been woken up early to the sound of trumpets and drums outside your window. That’s Illinois State University’s Big Red Marching Band, practicing for its next performance. However, if you live there currently, then you may here a loud voice bellowing over a microphone, which would be Gavin Smith, the band’s new director. Previously band director at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Smith already feels right at home with his 275 new musicians and performers. “I attended a state university myself, so I missed the atmosphere,” Smith said. “I really appreciate coming back to the students with similar upbringings, and I just love this program.” Smith’s new role began July 1, and has been non-stop since. While his main focus is on the winds, woodwinds and brass

Each week, Smith runs practices, helps write music and choreograph visuals, and organizes the long days of football games. He also works closely with a group of 30 student leaders to give and receive feedback to each member

of the Big Red. Peter Tozzi, a senior renewable energy major and drum line section leader for the Big Red said Smith is doing a great job working with leaders including himself. He explains that while he hasn’t made any major changes yet, everything is running very smoothly and he really energizes the band. “It’s nice to have a band director that’s so open and wants to hear everyone’s input,” Tozzi said. “Gavin is very cooperative, and since he knows he’s new, he’s open to new ideas and old traditions. “ Goals are a common theme of

Despite the hectic season for the Big Red and inevitable drama with college students, Smith claims he wouldn’t give it up for anything. “I love what I do, and I am still learning and improving, but my main drive is the students” Smith said. “I could be having the worst day, but we get to rehearsal and we are all together as one big family.” The students feel that sense of family too, Krivosik said. During his four years on the band, and three as a section leader, he knows he has made some longterm friendships. “People look up to me for guidance and I look to others too,” Krivosik said. “The general atmosphere of how we can all lean on each other is the best part.” Holly Petrovich / Editor-in-Chief

Show your spirit this homecoming MY VIEW KAMARA TURNER Columnist

I

t’s the best time of the school year: Homecoming Week. Homecoming events will run Monday through Sunday and will range from a bonfire and basketball exhibition to tailgating for the Redbird football kickoff on Saturday in Hancock Stadium. With the many events offered, students will be able to show off their school spirit in different and unique ways. While some students will gather together in groups to display school spirit, there are many students who

would rather start their own trend. At the football game, a fun and exciting way to show school spirit is to have a fight-song battle with your friends. This is a great time to get Illinois State University students together and bring out their competitive sides with ISU’s fight song. See which side can sing the song the loudest and proudest. “When I hear ISU theme song tune from the band at games, it makes me so proud to be a Redbird,” Ashley Holmes, a sophomore accountancy major said. If you are more into group school spirit

and your group of friends would be remembered for in the future. Plus, the more students, the better. Who would not want a flash mob on the Quad with 1,000+ students for Homecoming Week? Being proud of the school or department you are a part of is a good way to show school spirit in itself, but I think going above and beyond is always better for Homecoming Week in particular. Try a department and/or school decorating contest. This is a great way to advertise your major and meet Editorial Cartoon by Athena Tapia other people

and want to plan something as a team, try a flash mob on the Quad for an exciting way to be spiritied. A flash mob with ISU’s fight song would be something new and out of the ordinary. Although starting a flash mob would require a lot of work, time and dedication, I believe it would definitely be something you

who are a part of the same major as you. Finally, we cannot forget about the basic Homecoming Week spirit day. On this day, students can wear ISU letters and colors. I believe this is one of the best ways for students to participate in Homecoming Week. Most students have ISU gear even if it is something as simple as a T-shirt. Walking around with ISU apparel will not only encourage other students to wear their clothing, but it will also brighten the campus with our Redbird red. Thinking of new ideas for homecoming week can be stressful, but being creative can also be fun and can start new ideas and rituals for the future. As a student of ISU, do not forget to celebrate your Redbird status during this Homecoming Week by dressing up and participating in events!

Dos and Don’ts of tailgating DO get a good night’s sleep before homecoming starts

DON’T go too hard, too early

Homecoming festivities start early and continue throughout the night, and you’re going to want to be well rested so you don’t crash in the middle of the day.

Whatever you decide to do on Homecoming, make sure not to use all of your energy first thing in the morning.

DO dress warm

DON’T expect freebies

Chances are that Homecoming is going to be cold and windy, as usual. Dress warmer than you think you’ll need to; chances are, you’re going to be outside most of the day.

Just because you get along well with your tailgating neighbors doesn’t mean they’re going to share their food or drinks. Make sure you’re stocked up for yourself and don’t expect handouts.

DO charge your phone/bring a power source You will not find a place to charge your phone at a tailgate, but you will want to take pictures. So make sure your cell is at 100 percent and think about bringing a backup battery source.

DO remember the caffeine If there’s anything you should be drinking at a tailgate, it’s caffeine. You will get tired, so ample amounts of coffee and soda will work in your favor. Compiled by REBECCA DAVIS / Features Writer

DON’T go shirtless A lot of guys tend to do this for the game. It’s the end of October, so save yourself a cold and put on a jacket.

DON’T be obnoxious Don’t cross a line that is going to make a police officer take need to give you a sobriety test. They will be going around tailgates and will have their eyes peeled for people being rowdy. You don’t want to spend your Homecoming in jail, so try to exhibit some good behavior while the cops are passing by.
