Fall Dating

As the fall season approaches and students continue to settle into the new school year, now is the perfect opportunity for single guys and girls to brush up on their pick-up lines. lindsey clark Staff Writer With a new school year underway and new opportunities looming everywhere, fall is a great time to brush up on your pick-up skills. College is one of the most memorable times of a person’s life, and perhaps you’re still looking for that special someone to share it with. No matter how you spin it, there is definitely an art to picking up. Below are some tips for college students to keep in mind when searching. For guys: -Whatever it is you say, it should be genuine. Most girls can tell when you are being insincere and when you are flattering them. An original compliment can go a long way. -Be confident. You have to believe in yourself, and if not, then pretend to believe in yourself. Women are generally attracted to men with a healthy amount of self-confidence.

-Have a conversation. By taking the time to talk and get to know her, you will automatically build rapport. Women like to talk, and almost everyone likes to talk about themselves, so asking a few simple questions (without making it seem like you are interrogating her) is a good way to get things started. -Good manners are important, as well as being charismatic and having a sense of humor. Having all of these personality traits will guarantee more success in picking up. -You may actually be better off not having a “wingman.” By tagteaming, the focus may be taken off you. You are more likely to be successful if you go solo instead, and you will definitely appear to be more sincere. -Brush it off if you are not at successful at first. By not taking it all so seriously, you will be much more likely to draw in more potential prospects; people are attracted to happy, carefree people. The absolute best thing you can do is to realize that you do not need her approval — and guess what? You don’t. see girl Tips page 9

Correction On Wednesday, Sept. 4, The Vidette article titled “Limited parking on campus to be resolved” was cut off mid-sentence. The entire quote was: “I really hope this parking issue gets solved. More and more people are beginning to live off-campus and parking has become a major issue,” Cusumano added. The Vidette regrets this error.

Vidette Editorial Board

Online dating should not be frowned upon People are spending more time online than ever before. It seems everything and everyone is connected on the Internet, whether through social media or some other outlet. Because of this, online dating has become more relevant than in years past. With apps like Tinder (which according to techcrunch.com, has more than 50 million registered users) and websites like OkCupid, people can essentially date from the comfort of their own home. If online dating is becoming more relevant in today’s society, then why is it still considered taboo? According to everydaylife.globalpost.com, online dating still has this reputation for a lot of reasons. Online dating websites make it easier for scammers to target potential victims. According to the website mentioned above, these scammers create false profiles in an attempt to somehow extract money out of online dater’s pockets. Also, online daters have to be aware of misrepre-

sentation. Users can easily alter their online presence, leading others to believe they are a completely different person from what they are in reality. Not to mention, users have no real contact or conversation with a person of interest, and base their opinions solely on hand-picked pictures and a short biography. However, this editorial board believes that online dating does not deserve the bad reputation it has acquired over the years. Contrary to popular belief, those who use online dating services have a better chance of finding “the one” than those who do not. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences came to the conclusion that more than one-third of married couples in the United States met online, and these couples had a lower rate of divorce compared to those who met at a local bar or some other establishment. These online couples are also more satisfied with their relationship than the others, according to the study. So, why have online daters had more success finding their significant other? John Cacioppo, a social psychology professor from the

University of Chicago who helped with the research, offered his interpretation of the results in an article published by TIME.com. Excluding those who alter their online identity, John Cacioppo believes that humans are more comfortable with being themselves over the computer or through text messaging. He says, “When you are face to face, there is facesaving. When you don’t [see each other], you can be more comfortable being yourself.” Also, these websites tend to be geared more towards marriage and serious relationships, so the web might attract more people who are ready to settle down. The only reason people would register themselves on these online dating websites would be to find a serious relationship, so it makes sense that online daters have more success finding a match. People may feel a little weary about online dating because, let’s be honest, it does seem a little unnatural. Meeting online instead of in person seems a bit odd. But, it is hard to argue the success people have had doing this. Online dating is always an option, and based on the statistics provided above, it might be the most viable option available.

Lulu: The creepiest way to start a relationship MY VIEW Nick Ulferts Columnist

S

ince the invention of smartphones, a variety of different apps have been created to give their users additional conveniences in their everyday lives. While many apps are great, there are some apps that are so unbelievable and seemingly unethical, that it really makes me question the morality of the people that invented them. The app Lulu is one of those in question. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Lulu is an app that allows female users to “review” males, specifically ones they are Facebook friends with. This includes everything from rating a male’s looks to selecting their important qualities, such as whether or not they pay for dinner or what they will be wearing in 10 years. Only females can use Lulu, as the app checks their Facebook account to ensure they are both female and over 17. I am not just targeting Lulu. Lulu is

ONLINE POLL

?

one of many of this type of app and isn’t even the worst, as it thankfully doesn’t allow for users to make their own comments. Males that find that they don’t want to be presented like an item on Ebay can also contact Lulu to have their particular review removed, though the only way a male can know if they are on Lulu is if a female friend tells him. However, for the purposes of this article, I will be using Lulu as my primary example of why apps such as these are so ridiculous. While there are some benefits to apps like Lulu, the problem with these kinds of apps is the way they objectify people. Males on Lulu are seen as objects, and users can flip through the different people reviewed and “shop” for the best looking or most wealthy guy. In many ways it violates the privacy of the people reviewed, and the commentary users provide can often be

unwanted or even untrue. Users of Lulu aren’t even getting that much benefit from Lulu, as relationships started through Lulu are often started for the wrong reasons.

Girls get their advice from anonymous reviewers, and while some of the qualities listed on Lulu are actually good qualities, many are very superfi-

cial and aren’t good reasons to start a relationship. Additionally, many of the attributes males are given on the app are very general and do not give a true indication of the character of the person. It is also worth noting that many of the reviews on Lulu will contain an obvious bias and can’t really be trusted. The reviews from close friends will obviously be biased and will likely be a little too positive. Then there are, of course, the reviews from ex-girlfriends, many of which are likely very bitter and often shouldn’t be trusted either. The worst aspect of Lulu is how creepy it is. Males often don’t know they are being reviewed, and the qualities that are available to be selected about them are often very sexual. Why anyone would want to rate the men in their life, specifically their

friends, as “#KinkyInTheRightWays” is beyond me. If someone said this to another in person, it would likely be considered sexual harassment. “This app asks women to publicly sexualize and shame the men in their lives without their consent,” Slate’s Amanda Hess said in an article about the app. Lulu and similar apps are the equivalent to writing who they found attractive and who they didn’t inside high school bathroom stalls. Such apps as Lulu really don’t have many redeeming qualities. They reinforce offensive stereotypes, violate people’s privacy and treat people like objects. If in the future your partner asked you why you initially had interest in them, and you replied “because you had a great rating on Lulu!” they probably wouldn’t be very flattered. Lulu and similar apps really should be just left alone. The best relationships will always occur from more natural, personal interactions and not creepy apps. Lulu: many girls’ guilty pleasure Tinder: modern matchmaker KELLIE FLAHERT Y News Editor

Brian Jarocki/Photo Editor

Lulu is an up-and-coming smartphone app that allows women to annoynmously rate men based on their own experiences with them. Women, and only women, rate men based on sexual performance, character, physical appearance, first kiss and commitment level. “[Lulu] is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine,” ISU student Sarah Johnson, said. “It’s just hilarious that girls are able to rate their exes without them knowing and a fun thing to do when you’re bored.” While most women seem to find pleasure out of rating men in their area, the men whose profiles are linked to their Facebook pages do not always feel the same. “I downloaded the app as a joke one day, but I deleted it after I received a couple ratings. It’s just really shallow, and I didn’t feel the need to be a part of it,” ISU student Tom Jones said. While the buzz surrounding the

Lulu app may not be consistent among men and women, the entertainment factor still remains. Like many other fad smartphone apps, Lulu’s popularity will run its course. But until then,

women will continue to find amusement with their anonymous ratings. Editors Note: The individuals quoted in both of these articles declined to reveal their real names.

KELLIE FLAHERTY News Editor Tinder is yet another dating app fad that made its mark this past year as a new way to discover potential romantic matches within a preferred distance. Setting up a Tinder account is quite simple. The users simply need to link their Facebook account with the app and select up to five photos to display on their profile. Playing the Tinder game is just as easy as setting up the initial account. Users swipe their finger to the right if they wish to “like” a potential match or to the left to dismiss. “I started ‘liking’ guys on Tinder as a joke at first, and then I saw my friends on it so I liked them as a joke,” ISU student Kathleen Sommers, said. Sommers said she actually ended up having some interesting conversations with her Tinder matches. “I’ve had some good conversations and met some cute guys, but

Brian Jarocki/Photo Editor

never pursued them by going on any dates,” Sommers added. Each action the users take is kept anonymous from others until a match is made, which means two users “liked” each other.

the Best pick-up lines top five

As an investigative journalist, when I learned there was going to be a pick-up lines list, I figured the only way to find out how good the best ones were would be to test them out myself. Here are the ones that met the most success.

5. “You look like someone I would like to meet.” This one bets on the fact you would also be someone they want to meet. Otherwise it will quickly go downhill. It is a friendly compliment to point out without knowing anything about the other person, and without pointing out you’ve been uncomfortably staring at them for the past 10 seconds.

3. “You look like you’re having a terrible time.” This will exclusively work if they look like they are having a terrible time. This can also go terribly wrong if they suffer from having a face that looks annoyed or sad all the time. Side note: don’t suggest you can fix the terrible time, you might just come off as cocky.

4. “I was going to wear the same shoes.” A little bit of humor goes far! Shoes in this case can be replaced with basically anything on the other person’s body, but always go with the most feminine (or most masculine if you’re a lady) thing the potential companion is wearing. Assuming they don’t take it seriously, it should at least net a small laugh, and after that you can break out the big guns.

2. “ Hey! You!”

1. “Hi. My name is [name].”

the Worst pick-up lines deep six While on my quest, I was also fortunate to hear which ones didn’t work so well. 1. “Want to see my room?” This obvious segue may work for a young couple after talking for a while, but not frequently the first line of someone’s mouth. The quiet rejection written on the recipient’s face said it all.

3. “I just farted – want to go outside for fresh air?”

2. “How much does a Polar Bear weigh?” “Enough to break the ice.” Apparently, not everyone appreciates puns based off of Kodiak bears, or they have heard the line before (many, many times), or they’ll give an actual answer (approximately 7001500lbs for a male adult, as I was lucky to learn).

Although it could get some laughs, you run the risk of shamefully being told no, and that that person would rather deal with the fart instead of talking to you outside. Also worth noting, don’t actually fart.

4. “I’m like, really good at karate.” Unless of course you are really good at karate. Generally, lying about yourself doesn’t work that well in the grand scheme of things. The potential lover might just call you out.

5. “I drank like 40 beers tonight.”

Though not polite, yelling loudly at someone frequently works as an attention getter. Be sure to lower your voice after this introduction though. And you’ll have to prove yourself slightly more polite than your rude introduction, so it means you’ll be fighting an uphill battle.

No one is impressed by the fact you drank a lot. Also, we highly doubt that you drank more than 40 beers. Typically, people find self-control much more attractive.

Shockingly, what seems to work best is simply introducing yourself with eye contact. Who would’ve thought that the best introduction is an introduction.

6. “I wish I could rearrange the alphabet, because then I would put u and I together.” Besides the polar bear one, this is probably the second most well-known pick up line. Just skip it; it doesn’t work, ever.

(Or just be Ryan Gosling. That seems to work pretty well.)

Casual dating in college is on the rise Matt Johnson Reporter

Continued from page 1

For girls: -Be approachable. If you want a guy to come up to you, the best thing you can do is not be surrounded by too many of your friends — many guys will feel intimidated to go up to a posse of girls. Put the phone away and make sure to smile!

With the pressures of work and school, college students increasingly prefer to not go on dates than in previous years.

According to a psychology study at James Madison University, college-age students are twice as likely to “hook-up” as they are to be in an actual relationship. Although when asked if students prefer dating versus hooking-up, the majority of students from both genders said that given the choice, they preferred traditional dating. About 77 percent of males said they would pick dating over a casual hook-up and 95 percent of the females surveyed said the same. This concept in psychology is known as pluralistic ignorance. Essentially, if everybody is doing it, it must be good. The main question is whether or not this applies to ISU students too. “I’d say for me it is a mixture of both,” mass media major Ashley Taylor said. “You have this newfound freedom in college and with that, you want to experience more and only have to look out for yourself. But also, you are entering a serious time in your life where most people do find their significant other.” From the study, both genders said the potential for a broken heart is one of the biggest drawbacks to traditional dating. The idea of going on an actual date appears to be too risky of an option compared to a casual relationship.

-Get the conversation going even when he sends a boring text like “How was your day?” Instead of answering, “Good, how was your day?” be more specific and give a few small details about what you did or whatever you are interested in. This is more interesting and will keep the conversation from falling flat early on. -Rather than going out for the regular dinner and a movie, suggest an activity that you both enjoy and can do together, such as mini-golfing or visiting a museum. This will help relieve any uneasy tension and will make for a more memorable date.

A recent study stated that college students tend to refrain from traditional dating because the risk of being brokenhearted is substantially high. The “hook-up culture” is more common than dating in a college setting today.

“I don’t feel the pressure of traditional dating,” athletic training major Ryan Darko said. “I’d rather be one-on-one and be able to talk, rather than have other people around you to determine the situation.” Compared to the past, dating is now further complicated by ambiguous language. Some of these examples include just talking, hooking-up, friends with benefits and open relationships. These phrases and words are

used to try and avoid the commitment of being in a relationship, according to the article “The Complexities of the Casual Date.” These semi-relationships alleviate the pressure of a real relationship by allowing both parties to leave their options open. According to a study sponsored by the Independent Women’s Forum, the average college student was raised to believe in equality between the sexes. This has resulted in blurring gender roles

when it comes to dating etiquette. The Women’s Forum report suggested the burden of asking and paying for a date is no longer expected of the guy. “I would say in this respect dating is more casual now,” mass media major Peter Hansen said. “It depends on the girl, but for the most part I casually prefer to hang out.” Dating may have become more casual, but it has not become less complicated.

-Avoid getting Catfished when chatting online. When meeting someone online, ask them to live chat with you — this way, you can be sure of who you are talking to and steer clear of players that can be all too commonly found on the Internet. -If you disagree with him, say so. Don’t agree with everything he says just because you think you should. Expressing your own opinion is far more stimulating than just saying what you think he wants to hear. -Now is the time to be sure of who you are. There is no quality more attractive than being comfortable with yourself, so if he pays you a compliment, don’t talk him out of it. Just smile and say thank you.

How to survive a long-distance relationship Kelsey Stiegman Reporter

They say distance makes the heart grow fonder.

For some couples this is true, and their

relationships become stronger every second they spend apart. But for many others, the miles are too much to handle, the relationship suffers and eventually it comes to a painful end. If you are a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed freshman, brace yourself, because starting college can be the biggest struggle for a couple. College changes a person, so it’s necessary to accept that most long-distance relationships do fail. You can either choose to fight tooth and nail, or sit back and hope for the best. One of the qualities necessary in a longdistance relationship is trust. Duh, right? It is the key to any relationship, but for one with distance involved it is absolutely essential. You think your significant other is the bee’s knees and it’s likely that someone else will too, especially when there is alcohol involved. If you don’t trust that person to say ‘no,’ you are going to have a lot of fights in your near future. Julian Hernandez, a senior criminal justice major, whose girlfriend lives an hour away says, “I have only known a handful of long-distance relationships that lasted. Living away from each other can make things complicated, especially if you like to go out and have fun. I guess you just have to trust

each other.” Another obvious, but no less important thing every long-distance relationship needs to survive is communication. Texting, calling, video chatting, Facebook posting, instant messaging, Tweeting, Snapchatting. We do these things on a regular basis, but with school comes homework, parties, meetings, jobs, projects and sometimes your significant other can get lost in the mix. Be sure to keep your priorities in order, because if you both are at the top of each other’s list it is much more likely to work out. “We make sure that we either Skype

or talk on the phone every night and ask how each other’s day was. We fill each other in on the big stuff and most of the time it doesn’t feel like we are nine hours away,” says Keely Hunt, a junior apparel merchandising major.

Self-restraint is another thing to practice religiously. Obviously, don’t get involved with that attractive stranger you think is a good idea when you are all liquored up and caught in the moment, but restraint also applies to other situations. If his roommate has a couple of girls come over, calm down. If she is tagged in a picture with some dude you don’t know, relax. When you haven’t seen each other in weeks the tension can build and the small-

est fight can be explosive and possibly fatal. Learn to pick your battles, because after weeks of not seeing each other that stupid argument could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. “I would be lying if I said that the distance didn’t make things hard,” Hernandez said. “Distance can turn simple conversations into an argument. Where are they now? ISU Alumni Edition Melanie Lowe Senior Staff

It’s no secret that life after graduation is often deemed a scary and intimidating place. But until we as students physically enter the “real world,” we cannot fully be sure of what lies ahead. However, we can turn to some of ISU’s recent graduates – those who have landed long-term jobs, gone onto grad school and experienced life after college – to better understand what it’s really like.

Kathy Knudsen

Deaf Education Alumnus Kathy Knudsen knew that she wanted to continue her education, but she didn’t know how drastically it would alter her life. “The biggest difference in my life since graduating college is living in Nashville, Tenn. by myself,” Knudsen said. Currently, Knudsen is enrolled in graduate level classes at Vanderbilt University. While becoming acclimated to her new surroundings, she is enjoying life after college. “My graduate classes are more tailored to my interests, and it makes everything more enjoyable. All the stress that went into applying for grad schools was definitely worth it in the end,” Knudsen said.

Isaac Mitchell

Graphic Design Alumnus

Today, Mitchell is working as a graphic designer at Chestnut Health Systems and has found that there are both positive and negative aspects when it comes to life after college. “The biggest difference is the social aspect. You don’t have that sense of camaraderie with fellow students, and you have to find new social circles,” Mitchell said. However, he has found that there are numerous advantages when it comes to being hired after graduation. According to Mitchell, he landed a job that he had desired – something that ISU properly prepared him to do. “So far, the real world really isn’t that bad. Working nine to five and having your evenings off is nice, and it feels good to focus on my life right now,” Mitchell said.

Patrick Donlan

Psychology Alumnus “Finding a job is a difficult process. I think the scariest part at this moment is the uncertainty of it all,” Donlan said. “I’m sure that other recent grads are throwing everything they’ve got at the wall and hoping something sticks.” After having no luck in the job department, Donlan made the decision to attend grad school this fall. “Grad school is certainly different, but change might be a good thing after all,” Donlan said. However, he continues to miss life in college, having not fully acclimated to adult life yet. “My advice to students who are graduating is don’t. Illinois State is the best, and I wish I was still there … every day,” Donlan said.

Murder, mayhem and laughs in ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

Australia’s Capture the Crown to perform at The Castle Theatre

Quinn Wermeling Staff Writer

Quinn Wermeling Staff Writer

The Community Players Theatre will be kicking off their fall season with Joseph Kesslring’s classic dark comedy, “Arsenic and Old Lace.” The show runs September 6-8 and 12-15. Tickets are $12 for students. The play centers on the comic misadventures of Mortimer Brewster, a theatre critic who must put up with his exceedingly unusual and murderous family. The play contains plenty of wacky characters, including two old ladies who poison lonely bachelors, and a murderer who resembles Boris Karloff in his Frankenstein monster makeup thanks to a horribly botched plastic surgery job. Despite the lunacy of the tale, some elements of the play may be rooted in fact. The case of Amy Archer-Gilligan, a nursing home proprietor who poisoned up to 50 of her residents, is often cited as one of the inspirations for the play. “Arsenic and Old Lace” was the

most successful of Kesslring’s plays. The New York Times opening night review called the play “so funny that none of us will ever forget it.” The play was adapted for the screen by Frank Capra in 1944. The filmed starred the illustrious Cary Grant and remains popular to this day. For tickets and information, visit the Community Players website at communityplayers.org PREVIEW

Australian metal-core quintet Capture the Crown will be performing at The Castle Theatre in Bloomington on Friday. According to the band, they live by one motto: “live fast, play fast, party fast.” Their rise to prominence has also been remarkably fast. The band has quickly gained immense popularity since they plopped into the ever-expanding metal-core scene in early 2010. The video for their debut single, the appropriately Aussie “You Call That A Knife? This Is A Knife!” swiftly raked in five million views on YouTube. Crikey, Mate! Following the breakout success of their debut single, the group swiftly released a slew of other singles that were similarly gobbled up, followed by a full length album, “‘Til Death,” and an EP. According to the band’s site, “Capture the Crown are not only a band, but the start of a growing movement.” If the massive amount of activity their videos

stuff and believe that they care as much about you as you care about them.” When you finally do see each other, it will be great. Be sure to do something special as a couple. Give the person you are fighting for a reason to do the same. Have a moment they can remember when they are lying in bed at night feeling empty because you aren’t next to them. Speaking from experience, surviving a long-distance relationship with your love and sanity intact is sort of like a marathon. Soon after the start it begins to seem impossible and you are so tired that you don’t know if you can go on. But after a while you break through the ‘wall’ and, for the most part, it’s smooth sailing after that.

September’s F1rst Fr1day to showcase downtown Bloomington businesses Melanie Lowe Vidette Staff Writer If you’re new to the downtown Bloomington area or haven’t taken the time to explore, First Friday is an excellent way to discover everything the city has to offer. On Friday, Bloomington will host its monthly event, First Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The event began in 2008 as a Thursday night occurrence and as more businesses began to catch on, it slowly morphed into “F1rst Fr1day.” Downtown Bloomington isn’t just full of bars, there are specialty shops and businesses unique to the area. According to Marisa Brooks;

Events, Outreach and Marketing Coordinator for the city of Bloomington; First Friday provides the public with an opportunity to get to know a number of the booming businesses downtown. “The event was originally created so that people who work or go to school during the day can visit these various businesses,” Brooks said. This month, First Friday has a back-to-school theme and is encouraging a number of locations to offer school-related sales or promotions. For example, Crossroads, a Fair Trade shop, is offering 15 percent off of one item if students wear their school colors or show their student ID. In fact, First Friday is the perfect event for students to explore.

“A lot of college students are familiar with the bar scene in downtown Bloomington, but if you’re drinking at the bars, you don’t get to see what else is down there,” Brooks said. Even Reggie the Redbird will be present. You can find him hanging out in front of the Monroe Centre. In addition to the countless discounts, street performers and live music, free refreshments will also play a large role in the night’s event. “It’s a neat vibe to hear different genres of music being played in the community,” Brooks said. Furthermore, downtown Bloomington is scattered with a number of art galleries that will open their doors to the Bloomington-Normal community.

“Lots of times people are interested in local art, but there is a certain stigma that goes along with entering an art gallery. Luckily, First Friday creates an open, lively atmosphere,” Brooks said. PREVIEW

I don’t know whether to classify myself as bisexual because all though I find myself attracted to both men and women I can’t imagine myself having sex with them and the only thing I find pleasurable is masturbation.

KINSEY REPORT Sexual orientation is complex and some people have different ideas about how they come to label their own sexual orientation. Not even all scientists who study sex agree on how to best describe or measure a person’s sexual orientation. You might ask yourself why it matters to you to have a label for your sexual orientation. Can you just be a person who finds yourself attracted to both men and women, without having sex with anyone? Are you feeling pressured to have sex with people you don’t want to have sex with? Or are you feeling like you want to be roman-

tically connected to another person, but avoid sex? These kinds of questions might help you explore more about your feelings and attractions. Some people find others romantically attractive but don’t want to have sex with anyone, either because they simply lack sexual interest in other people or because they experience shame, guilt, or disgust about the idea of having sex with other people. Other times, sexual desire just takes time to develop. You didn’t mention how old you are, but rest assured that sometimes sexual interest

comes later for people. It’s not unusual for me to hear from some of my college students that while they find people attractive, they’re not interested in having sex with other people at this time in their lives. I like to remind people that they can take romantic and sexual relationships slowly if they want to. It’s okay to just spend time with someone before ever becoming sexually involved with them. It’s also okay to start out kissing and making out, without touching each other’s breasts or genitals. When you’re both ready to move on and try other sexual behaviors, that’s something you can

do. And if you never become interested in that, that’s all right too. For more information about sexual orientation you might find it helpful to connect with Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays through their website which is pflag.org. You might also like looking at some of the videos on the It Gets Better Project’s website which is itgetsbetter.org, as the videos feature women and men talking about their development and in some cases how they came to term with identifying as bisexual, gay, or lesbian. I hope you find these resources to be helpful.

In a schedule bind, Notre Dame can’t please all By Brian Hamilton Chicago Tribune SOUTH BEND, Ind. _ So Brian Kelly thinks Brady Hoke is a good guy, he really is. And the Notre DameMichigan rivalry is momentous and historic and something will be missing without it, it really will. Not that there is much to do about it, thanks to the agreement Notre Dame entered into with the ACC a year ago and the various contortions involved in constructing football schedules from here on. “It makes sense to play, I get that,” Kelly said Tuesday. “It’s just there are so many complexities with our schedule and our agreement with the ACC that it’s difficult and frustrating.” It’s not what Notre Dame will do without Michigan but how the Irish

will replace the Wolverines. The forthcoming college football playoff should inspire stronger out-ofconference matchups, if strength of schedule becomes a great determiner for the selection committee. For the independent Irish, five ACC games and three regular rivalry games — USC, Stanford and Navy — comprise a de facto conference slate. That leaves four games as variables to help achieve optimal schedule power, though even that’s knotty. “We’re trying to keep a national perspective on it,” Kelly said. “Michigan is going out, but Texas is coming on. We’re also looking at areas where our Shamrock Series can be touted or played, whether that be on the East Coast or in some areas that geographically make sense to us. “Finally (it’s) where we can bring

this schedule together in balance and still give us the quality schedule that, when the committee looks at a schedule in whole and decides who of those four teams relative to playoffs, that they can look at our schedule and say, that’s a deserving schedule.” That upcoming Texas series — played in 2015 and 2016, then in 2019 and 2020 — is an answer. But it’s also a seemingly simple trade-off masking an unyielding matrix for athletic director Jack Swarbrick and Co. Here’s how Swarbrick explains Notre Dame’s relative bind: The Irish plan for seven home games (including a Shamrock Series offsite game) and five road games annually. Every year, four of five road games are locked in: two ACC, Navy or ACC, and Stanford or USC. That, Swarbrick said, leaves just

three spots to “do deals”: A homeand-home, a possible Shamrock Series game and a home game without a return. That leaves, realistically, maybe only a couple of slots that bolster power. “The candidates for the home game without a return are limited,” Swarbrick said. “We will use the other two slots to try to meet existing commitments, ensure strong strength of schedule, honor traditional rivalries and achieve geographic balance.” There is no denying strength must be built. South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner’s team opened with North Carolina and closes with Clemson — with the minefield of the SEC schedule in between. Tanner’s goal is to maintain 10 power games per year. A message from SEC Commissioner Mike Slive

“resonated loud and clear” with him: In deciding that last playoff spot, Slive told school administrators, schedule will be a massive factor. “It’s important that you’ll be rewarded for playing that kind of schedule, if you do well,” Tanner said. “Fan interest is a big deal _ people who buy tickets want to see great games. And then as far as this new playoff, if you’re going to be in the conversation, you have to have played a good schedule.” Typically, Notre Dame doesn’t have issues there. But the imminent goodbye to Michigan highlights the challenges of a consistent strength routine. “I know (Hoke) wants to continue to play Notre Dame, and we’d like to oblige him,” Kelly said. “But right now it’s difficult with the commitments we have.”

Why Redbird football shouldn’t get down after first game of ’13 Tim carroll Sports Columnist

T

he Redbirds may have been beaten pretty badly on the scoreboard last Thursday when they opened their season against FBS team Ball State, but a 51-28 loss to the Cardinals is hardly indicative of what actually happened on the field that night. ISU got off to a fantastic start, scoring on each of their first two possessions and jumped out to a 14-9 lead on the Cardinals. They then extended it to 21-9 before Ball State settled into the game. The Redbird defense kept up and refused to give up any big plays. This hurt them multiple times last season. Ultimately, the talent on Ball State’s side ended up winning out for them in this game. The Redbirds ran the ball 36 times for just 74 net yards. It was frustrating to watch at times but ISU’s ground game is one of its strengths against just about anybody on the FCS level. A positive to take out of the game is the performance of quarterback

Jared Barnett. In his first start at Illinois State, he completed 20 passes on 29 attempts for 282 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He threw one interception, but it was on a tipped ball after a receiver got a hand on it — so he can’t be blamed much for that. He also ran for 19 yards, taking away the number of yards he was sacked for, so he displayed his ability to get out of the pocket. Barnett is clearly the most talented QB in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC), so the Redbirds are going to utilize his talents once games against FCS teams begin. The front seven of the Redbirds’ defense also performed admirably, coming up with 3 sacks and holding the Cardinals run game to 80 yards on 32 carries. That’s a paltry 2.5 yards per attempt rate for the Ball State run game, about half of what a FBS team should be averaging. There is no doubt the Redbirds would have liked to keep the score closer, much less win the football game. But there is still plenty to be excited about for this season.

There are currently 5 teams from the MVFC in the FCS Coaches and Sports Network polls. North Dakota State, the reigning National Champs, are rightfully still at number one after upsetting the Big 12’s Kansas State, but others have moved into the top 10 despite victories against so-so teams. South Dakota State, ranked no. 7 by the coaches, is not on the Redbirds’ schedule this year, so that is one team they will not have to worry about. Northern Iowa is also now ranked ahead of the ’Birds, but one week into the season doesn’t prove they are definitively better than ISU, so the Redbirds will likely be the favorite by the time that game happens. Youngstown State, who is in the final spot of the Coaches’ poll, isn’t likely to beat the ’Birds. This season still has a ton of potential in it, and the Redbirds’ ideal record is 9-2, which will no doubt get them into the playoffs. This isn’t the FBS, where you have to be top two to have a chance to win it all. Football is a game of big plays, and in a playoff, that may be all it takes.

The Illinois State women’s golf team will open its fall schedule with the Redbird Invitational beginning Sunday at ISU’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal. The Redbirds’ fall season will consist of five tournaments before a three month layoff, after which they will compete in six tournaments during the spring season. “We have a great mix of events this year that allows us to compete with the best,” head coach Darby Sligh said Darby on goredbirds.com. Sligh “A huge highlight of the fall season will be the Golf-

week Conference Challenge, where we will be representing the Missouri Valley Conference in Colorado against some of the most prestigious conferences in the country. “Above all else, this schedule provides a great balance of opportunities for the student-athletes to experience new places and compete against teams that will push us to be better.” 2013-14 The ’Birds are stacked with veteran leadership with four returning seniors — Brianna Cooper, Carlee Cossell, Rachel Rachel Powers and Jordyn Powers Wyzgowski. Hayley Guyton, junior, and Courtnee Cossell, sophomore, round out the six-woman team.

During the 201112 season, Cooper had a season stroke average of 76.2 and finished third at the Imes Invitational with a three round season best Brianna Cooper score of 216 (7072-74). After the Redbird Invitational, the team will travel to the Cardinal Cup in Louisville (Sept. 16-17); the Golfweek Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. (Sept. 23-25); the LPGA Xavier Invitational at the International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. (Oct. 5-7); and its final tournament of the fall season, the Hoosier Fall Invitational hosted by Indiana at the Hickory Sticky Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind. (Oct. 19-20).

That’s gonna leave a mark “

Rest and proper technique as prevention go hand-in-hand when it comes to avoiding chronic injuries. For the acute injuries – those that happen as a result of one play or awkward movement – it’s most beneficial to work on overall body strengthening, stretching and bracing if it’s possible to do that.

Kelly Haley, MS, ATC Assistant Athletic Trainer Illinois State University

Knee injuries can range anywhere from one week to six months recovery time, as with shoulder injuries. Depending on the severity of a concussion, recovery time typically lasts one week to a month.”

NFL: Quarterbacks touch the ball on nearly every play and are a main target of the defense. Because quarterbacks are often more stationary than other players, injuries tend to occur in the upper body, with the shoulder being the most prominent injury, accounting for 17%. Among all other players, injuries to the lower leg and ankles area are most common, accounting for 275. Quarterbacks are injured, on average, once every 236 plays. Special teams players however, are among the football players injured most often, at a rate of once per 50 plays. Source:

SOCCER “The most prevalent injuries in soccer include knee and ankle injuries and concussions. Lateral ankle sprains and other foot and ankle injuries occur very often as a result of the rapid change in direction, contact with other players, poor biomechanics and occasionally poor playing surfaces. Knee injuries, specifically ruptures of the anterior cruciate ligament, frequently sideline female soccer players. For female athletes, soccer has the highest percentage of concussions across all sports

BACK

Concussion prevention in soccer is a multi-faceted issue. Teaching appropriate heading technique, limiting the number of headers performed in youth athletes, using appropriately sized soccer balls for the given age range, and penalizing dangerous and aggressive game play can help to decrease the incidence of concussions in soccer. Unfortunately, no research clearly supports the use of soccer headgear or mouthguards for preventing concussions.”

SWIMMING & Diving “Swimming and diving are lumped together as one but they really are two very different sports, and because of this have different common injuries. The most common injuries for swimmers are biceps or rotator cuff tendonitis, labral tears and muscular imbalances/spasms (usually in the upper back/shoulder or low back). With divers, we see more acute injuries, such as contusions and ligament sprains. The frequency at which these injuries occurs really depends on the time of year for swimmers. Generally one sees more injuries at the beginning of the season due to the increase in training and the end of season due to the sheer amount of training. With divers it’s more sporadic.”

FOOT/ ANKLE

“The most common injuries I see in women’s gymnastics are lower extremity ankle injuries such as sprains and chronic anterior impingement and Achilles tendinopathies including Achilles ruptures. I also see a lot of back injuries such as SI dysfunction, lumbar disc injuries and stress/repetitive injuries to vertebra (usually lumbar). Recovery time for these injuries depend on a lot of factors. Ankle sprains, depending on the severity, can have a recovery time of anywhere from two to three days to four to six weeks. Achilles ruptures and repair usually takes about five to six months. Back injuries are much more variable. Usually patient activities have to be limited to avoid exacerbating skills, so we focus extensively on rehabilitation but they may still be able to participate in some activity. Also, it depends on how acute the injury is. For an acute vertebral stress injury, bracing and rest may be involved anywhere from two to four months.”

“Tennis injuries tend to come from players excessively working their strong arm (whichever they use to hold the racket). The two most common tennis injuries are shoulder/rotator cuff tendinitis and wrist tendinitis. Both injuries are a direct result of putting constant pressure on the same joints day in and day out, and the effects can be long term and very painful.”

John Munn

Bruising and contusions can be prevented by wearing proper protection such as face masks on batting helmets or elbow and shin guards, most commonly seen on MLB players. Prevention of these types of injuries comes from identifying improper throwing mechanics and muscular weakness. A lot of shoulder injuries can be resolved through rehabilitative intervention.”

“Typical injuries we see in wrestling involve the knee, shoulder and concussions. Typically, each member of the team will acquire at least one injury, though the severity may differ. Most of the time we just wrestle through these injuries and take care of them at the end of the season, unless they interfere with our competitiveness.

COLLEGE: Ligament sprains are the most common injury reported in college football, accounting for more than 30 percent of all injuries, with the lateral ligaments of the ankle and medial collateral ligaments of the knee most commonly affected. Concussions make up 7.4 percent of all injuries in college football players. The preseason, not including spring camps and training, has the highest injury rate (9.7 per 1,000 athlete exposures) compared with in-season (7.5) and the postseason (4.2).

WRESTLING

“The most common injuries in softball are bruises and contusions from being hit by a ball or other player. Most of these are not serious but sometimes, especially if it by a pitch a fracture can occur. Shoulder injuries are also fairly common in softball due to the overhead nature of the sport. Shoulder injuries can manifest as tendonitis, ligament damage or rotator cuff tears.

Your guide to sports’ most prevalent injuries, recovery and prevention.

BASKETBALL Ankle injuries are the most common injury that basketball players face. According to the Washington Post, just over one quarter (26.6 percent) of NCAA basketball injuries are ankle sprains, while 1.4 percent of all injuries are more serious ACL tears. Source: The Washington Post

“The most common injuries first and foremost are ankle sprains. There’s a lot of side-to-side movement and jumping that puts athletes at risk. Combine that with trying to close a block next to your teammate and a lot of volleyball players sprain their ankle by landing on a teammate’s foot. Knee, shoulder and back injuries are also really common, but most of those in the collegiate setting are from overuse injuries. The athletes have played and specialized in one sport for so long that the muscles and other structures at those joints start to break down. Rotator cuff and labral tears in the shoulder, patellar tendonitis at the knee and vertebral disc injury in the low back are the most common that I’ve seen in my time covering volleyball. Improper arm swing is a sure way to get shoulder injuries and shorten a volleyball career. Ankle braces are the most widely seen form of prevention for volleyball. In addition, stretching and strengthening are critical because the muscles need to be strong enough to handle the load placed on them during play, but also be able to be flexible enough to avoid muscle strains, another very frequent acute injury. “
