Homecoming weekend can be a great time to have fun tailgating with friends and celebrating, but here are some safety tips to keep in mind for a harmless, enjoyable tailgate.
1. If you are under 21, do not drink!
Law enforcement officials are taken this seriously. Those arrested will have a criminal charge for unlawful consumption or possession of alcohol, a student disciplinary action and possible suspension of a driver’s license. “Unfortunately underage drinking is closely related to the overconsumption of alcohol and at least on our campus, often results in secondary consequences that I bear the responsibility to address,” Aaron Woodruff, ISU chief of police, said.
2. Use designated ash bins for grill coals, not the garbage cans.
King Tenderloin Homemade Soups Gebby’s Beer Batter Chicken Authentic Buffalo Wings Catfish
Situated amongst the designated tailgating areas are ash bins for tailgaters to place coals in once they are done grilling. If you place coals in the garbage you run the risk of starting a fire and ruining all the fun. Also, do not place grills inside your vehicle until they cool down, Woodruff said.

3. Drink out of a can, no glass.
Tailgaters this year cannot drink out of glass bottles. Additionally, kegs are prohibited from the designated tailgating areas.

4. Do not pull a Marcia Brady.
If you bring a football to tailgating, you should watch where you throw the ball. Everybody is looking to have a fun time and it is perfectly acceptable to throw the pigskin around, but take into consideration your surroundings.
5. Hide the vuvuzelas.
Amplification devices or unapproved devices deemed to be disruptive to the event are not allowed, Woodruff said. Violations are subject to the disciplinary code.
6. No tailgating fight clubs.
For the sake of Homecoming, let’s not have any fights during tailgating or the game. The Redbirds on the field will bring all the aggression needed for the game.
Woodruff offered a final word of advice to students for Homecoming Weekend. “Have fun, but be safe and responsible,” Woodruff said. “It is the secondary consequences of alcohol consumption which puts your safety at risk or potentially leads to a criminal arrest.”

Homecoming Weekend is great in more ways than one. With all of the alumni migrating back, you will have the opportunity to meet and hear about some of the greatest people that graduated from here. Let’s start with the College of Business. Though ISU’s business department has graduated several successful students, Paul Flessner is one for the record books. Flessner graduated in 1981 and is now the senior vice president of the data and storage platform division at Microsoft Corporation. Any sports fans? How many of you know about Jay Blunk. The name may not mean much to most, but Lord Stanley may ring a bell. He is the executive vice president of the Chicago Blackhawks and also an ISU alumnus. “Glee” fans: how many of you recognize star Jane Lynch? Or what about “Will and Grace” star Sean Hayes? Both attended ISU. While Hayes was technically not a graduate, his time here was life changing nonetheless. “My experience at ISU was incredibly empowering ... This was the right environment for me to be in. It was a safe, nurturing place to be, to learn, to explore and sometimes fail,” Hayes said when he received an honorary degree from the University. ISU was the start of all of these success stories, but the real question is—what will be yours?

Fall into Homecoming with Autumnal Festival Tyrianna Jones Daily Vidette Staff Writer
The Horticulture Center celebrated fall with its annual Autumnal Festival on Saturday, September 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival is a fundraiser for the Horticulture Center and all the money it makes goes back to the staff, garden and other expenses within the center. This year there was a circus theme in honor of the rich circus history in the Town of Normal and ISU’s Gamma Phi Circus. Gamma Phi is the oldest college circus in the nation. There was a $5 entry fee for adults 13 and up, $3 for children and free for 2-year-olds and under, but there were many free events and activities once admission was gained. There were also cornstalks, mums, other foods and local art sold throughout the day. “Every year we sell pumpkins, gourds and do our Scarecrows on Parade,” Horticulture Center Director Jessica Chambers said. Scarecrows on Parade is a silent auction with local businesses, organizations, university departments and families displaying their one-of-a-kind scarecrows to be sold to the highest bidder. The scarecrow can be used as an autumn yard decoration. The Fall Flower Spectacle is another silent auction for flower pots and is new to this year’s festival. Visitors could also enjoy the corn maze, $1 hay rides and children arts and crafts offered by various businesses and organizations. At 11 a.m., the circus-themed events began with free circus games, balloon-makers, face-painters and more. For a small fee, visitors could bring in their plants from home and take them to the plant fortune tellers to find out what is wrong with them. The festival ended with the Circus Spectacular event at 1 p.m. featuring performances from the Gamma Phi Circus and Dan Barth’s Old Time Medicine Show. Miller Park Zoo and Milner Library Special Collections were also be featured in the show. The Autumnal Festival usually has a great turnout every year with their fall themed activities that really get people in the spirit for the season. There is plenty of fun and enjoyment for the entire family.
Photo by Jake Johnson | Staff Photographer
“[The Autumnal Festival] means a lot,” Chambers said. “Based on how well we do tells us how much we can spend on plants and staff and helps pay for broken equipment.” All of the proceeds made that day will benefit both the staff of the Horticulture Center and ISU students who use it as an outdoor lab.

Kick off week with game predictions In the first half of the Ball State game, I was beyond confident to see what the Redbirds could do this year. Then that second half came back at us, and the game against Eastern had me cringing at my computer screen as I watched online. My confidence wavered, but a spark came back after the home opener. We have a pretty young team this year, but I thought the newcomers stood out most in front of the 11,000 fans watching from the new Hancock Stadium. If the young players like quarterback Blake Winkler and wide receiver Anthony Warrum can step up like they did against Abilene Christian, I think we will definitely have a chance at the Homecoming game and hopefully a second straight appearance at playoffs. I’m keeping my fingers crossed! Kristi Demonbreun Editor in Chief
For the homecoming predictions, I am hoping that it is going to be a good and exciting game. Last year when we played Western we dominated and won by over 20. I think this year the scores will be closer, but I still think ISU will be able to pull out a victory. With the Redbird fans cheering on the team I think they will beat them by at least a touch down. ISU played really well against Abilene Christine and they have another game against Missouri State before they take on the Western Bulldogs.
Zack Fulkerson Reporter
ISU 35, Western Illinois 10 After suffering a defeat to Southern Illinois on Homecoming last season, ISU will be seeking revenge. Last season, the Redbirds managed to hold the Leathernecks to just 137 total yards of offense. This year, it seems within the realm of possibility to hold them to two scores. Redshirt freshman Blake Winkler will be good for another 200 passing yards and two touchdown throws. A packed house will be there to cheer the Redbirds on to victory, as they top Western Illinois 35 to 10.

How to tailgate the right way Holly Petrovich News Editor
Football season is already in full-swing, but with Homecoming right around the corner, students are getting excited to check out the recently renovated Hancock Stadium. However, the most popular activity students look forward to on game day is tailgating. Here are some tips to make sure your tailgate runs smoothly this season.
1. Dress accordingly. Standing outside in the freezing cold or the blistering heat for three hours does not make for an enjoyable afternoon. Make sure to check the temperature outside before committing to an outfit; always bring an ISU hoodie just in case!
2. Bring plenty of food.
A football game can last a really long time, especially if you’re not really into the sport; be sure to have plenty of food and water to feed you and your friends all day. Without food, there will be hungry, crabby people. Also, take advantage of the concessions available at Hancock!
3. Be safe and legal.
With all of the new rules and restrictions on underage drinking for tailgating, be careful at what you put in your mouth and who you are hanging around. You don’t want your awesome tailgate to be ruined by the cops.
4. Get there early.
5. Park in the right location.
Tailgating is a very popular event at college, especially around homecoming. Practically every student plans on participating, making the room available very limited. Plan with your friends to get there a few hours before the game starts to make sure you have plenty of room for your group.
6. Have games to play.
It is crucial to have games at your tailgate, whether or not you typically enjoy playing them. It is an easy way to socialize and entertain, and it definitely makes a slow moving game go faster! The popular “bags” is a tailgate-must.
If driving to the tailgate, make sure to park in the designated areas. There is now parking available in front of Hancock, but it is very restricted. The lots surrounding the stadium, however, are available for use on game days starting at 7 a.m. and cost $10 per car.
7. Be respectful.
The tailgating lots tend to get very crowded, forcing groups to be on top of each other. Be courteous to the people around you, so they will do the same. Also, make sure to clean up your garbage efficiently when packing up to go home.
8. Cheer for the Redbirds! You are tailgating for a reason, the football team. Whether you actually go to the game or not is your choice, but at least pay attention to the team and root for them! The more they win, the longer the tailgating season lasts.

Fun facts of Homecomings past: marching Lindsey Clark
Vidette Staff Writer
This year ISU is celebrating its 92nd Homecoming with some awesome events in store for students and alumni, but we would not be where we are or have what we have without the Homecomings of yesteryear. Below, some fun facts throughout the years during the annual fall event.
Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat rocked out at Horton Fieldhouse on Sunday night, wrapping up Homecoming festivities for the week.
1971
1978
1986
1981 The theme was “ISU– A World of Cultures.” Numerous campus organizations selected a sub-culture to depict in the parade, and the representatives presented their sub-cultures during Homecoming week. Students and staff then casted money ballots to vote for their favorite subculture. Winners were announced at the half-time ceremonies of the game.
Master illusionist David Copperfield visited the Bone Student Center’s Braden Auditorium and graced the audience with his magic performance in conclusion of Homecoming events this year. The Union Ballroom held an American Dream Disco event both Friday and Saturday nights this year for an admission of $1.

through the timeline of Redbird hoopla Despite wind and rain, Homecoming this year went on without a hitch. Walt Willey, the actor who played Jackson Montgomery on ABC’s “All My Children” from 1987 to 2011, made an appearance at the parade through the sunroof of his white limousine.
This year’s parade included a unique concept in which float participants competed against each other. Entitled “Vote the Float,” each float had its own texting code. Parade watchers could then text in a vote for their favorite float participants.

1994 ISU’s 70th Homecoming theme was “The Days and Nights of Red and White.” The Student Center’s Circus Room hosted a casino night in which students could win free prizes.

October’s Own: fall for this free concert Ali Hutzler Copy Editor
Kick off your homecoming weekend at the third annual October’s Own free concert hosted by RSO A Trend to Follow. “The things that we do, we try to be different with them,” Bri Drake, vice president of public relations for ATF, said. “We bring out brand new artists—people who have a solid follower base and have them perform on campus for the student body.” According to ATF’s Facebook page, the group is a registered student organization that focuses on diversity, social networking, community service and entertainment. ATF has hosted the previous two October’s Own concerts, bringing rap and hip-hop artists that many students now hear on the radio to the ISU campus. “It actually turned to be that a good majority of people that have played for us, especially the headliners, have signed major record labels basically within the next year of doing the concert,” Drake said. Past artists include Chance the Rapper, Rocky Red and King Louie who have since signed with major record labels, have hit songs being played on the radio, and have worked with major artists
such as Lil Wayne. “So that has sort of become the concept of it—to bring out people that most people might not have heard of and soon after they become a big thing,” Drake said. This year the October’s Own concert will feature a variety of rappers and DJ’s including Spenzo, female rapper Tink, Assata Jones, Team Bayside High, Milk N Cookies and Dirty Noize. “As a group, our core value is to embrace weirdness. With that being said we encourage people to come out and join us in doing so,” Drake said. “We don’t put on the show to be different ourselves. We want everyone to come out and embrace their own weirdness.” This year October’s Own concert will be held on Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m. in the Brown Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and admission is free.

HOMECOMING 15
Alumni Return to Campus for Homecoming Matt Johnson Reporter
With the excitement of homecoming lingering in the air, ISU alumni make the journey back to their stomping grounds to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Alumni Association. Several events throughout the course of this year’s homecoming have been planned to accommodate and pay tribute to alum from ISU. Although occasions have taken place celebrating the 150th anniversary since Founder’s Day, this homecoming weekend is a special time for alumni to come back and enjoy the campus again. Stephanie Duquenne, associate director of Alumni Relations, mentioned the significance and what it means for alumni to come back their alma mater. “That feeling of tradition is very strong,” Duquenne said. “I want students and alumni to walk away from homecoming feeling very proud of their university and proud of their tradition.” Working with the College of Fine Arts and University Archives, the Alumni Association is creating a special program to feature 150th anniversary of the Alumni Association during the Alumni Day Luncheon on Friday, October 4. This event costs $15 to enter, but attendees must preregister. Nearly 80 alumni will be honored by their college or department at the Alumni Day Luncheon. Some of the other events planned for homecoming weekend include homecoming hospitality at the Alumni Center, the Illinois State homecoming parade, Department of Psychology Alumni Day awards ceremony and royalty crowning among many others. The entire schedule of events can be found at illinoisstatehomecoming.com “College and education is a life changing thing,” Rich Clemmons said, member of the Alumni Homecoming Board Committee.
“It is a good thing for everybody to think about giving something back to the university where you have met some of your best friends. We have a great university and I want people to appreciate that.” For the football game on Saturday, the Redbird Hospitality Tailgate Tent will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first 500 alumni who provide their contact information will receive a 2013 Homecoming pin and be eligible for one of five giveaway drawings. “There is that sense of engagement and to understand if you haven’t been back for years there is a place for you at ISU and we welcome you back with open arms,” Duquenne said.
