Spread acceptance and awareness of differences Vidette Editorial Board
Fifty years ago, the dating scene was different. Many homosexual couples had to stay quiet, more couples were presumed to abstain, and online dating did not exist. Now, there are seemingly more choices. People can decide what they want to do—and want to share with the world—and many of these choices were not even options back then.
In college, it seems like there are only really extremes. There are some people who have been dating their significant others for years, and others who don’t even want to be in a relationship and are enjoying the freedom of being single. Apps like Tinder and online dating sites have the options of deciding what a person is looking for in a relationship or lack thereof. Bigger than that, though, are the strides that sexual orientation and sexual identity have made. Seventeen states have legalized same-sex marriage, and although many of us at ISU are not thinking about marriage in the near future, this is monumental for everyone. Everyone deserves the right to marry someone if the couple is in love and wants to make that decision. Additionally, a Huffington Post article recently mentioned a transgendered teenage girl is now allowed to use the women’s bathroom at her school. And a separate article by the Huffington Post focused on women and whether or not they shave. The interviewees expressed that they have discovered less problems associated with
not shaving than in years past when they were younger. They have learned not to care if someone cares about what they do. Even abstinence is a big deal now. People can be more open about whether or not they support having premarital sex and why. There is more openness about having sex, and in fact, this has led to some virgins feeling like the minority. Whether or not this is true is constantly changing, but the fact remains that there seems to be more acceptance as a whole in regards to sex. But this Editorial Board believes more can be done. Yes, 17 states have legalized same-sex marriages. That still means that 33 have not. The transgendered girl should not have had to deal with bullying about wanting to use the women’s bathroom at her school. She identifies as a female, so it’s puzzling why she would not be allowed to use the bathroom meant for females. College can be difficult in more ways than just classes. There are constant stressors like not getting along with your roommate or trying to find a job. Seeking acceptance because of sexual orientation, identity, or beliefs should not be one of those stressors. For that reason, ISU’s PRIDE should be recognized. This group offers support for those who identify as LGBTQA on campus and puts on events such as the drag show to bring awareness and spread acceptance for students. There is no reason that someone should have to feel judged for his or her choices, feelings, decisions, or beliefs in any way, shape, or form. Everyone’s college experiences are different. Everyone’s f-ing different.
How was your summer? Nothing like waiting in line for 2 hours to pick up my text books. I‛m glad that‛s over. Now to get my parking pass.
Birth Control Methods
Whether or not a person chooses to have sex is a personal decision that is no one else’s business except his or her partners. However, if a person decides to be sexually active, it is essential to be safe about it, which is why ISU’s Student Health Services offers many birth control options. Both SHS and the G-Spot offer condoms, but there are others available. This gives someone the option that fits him or her the best while also giving the convenience of going somewhere on campus.

Meanwhile at Parking and Transportation...... 2 hour lines for parking permits.
WHHHHAAAAAATTT??? THIS CAN‛T BE! There must be a better way to get a parking permit!
I bought my permit online and had it mailed home weeks ago. Now on to other college activities. GO REDBIRDS!

Sexual reputation of college doesn’t relate to ever yone JUL I A E V E L SIZER Features Editor
Compiled from livescience.com
Women age 20–59 have an average of 4 sex partners during their lifetime
The average female loses her virginity at age 17.4
Men age 20–59 have an average of 7 sex partners during their lifetime
The average male loses his virginity at age 16.9
At least 50% of sexually active men and women will have a genital HPV infection at some point in their lives
Let’s face it, one of the most common college stereotypes is that all the students are having sex, and lot’s of it. While this may be true for some, it is definitely not true for all. Plenty of college students choose to abstain from sex all together.

According to a survey done by the University of Minnesota,
72 percent of students stated that they were sexually active. The remaining 28 percent do exist and they definitely
have their reasons for proudly holding that title. Some people abstain from sexual intercourse for religious reasons, personal reasons or simply because they haven’t found the right person. Hannah Wier is a freshman at ISU majoring in piano performance, and she is open about her choice to be sexually abstinent. Many religions believe that couples should wait until marriage to become intimate, and this is one of the main reasons behind Wier’s decision. “I was raised in a Christian family and I have been taught all my life that sex is something to be shared between husband and wife,” said Wier. While many people who are sexually active are comfortable with their decisions, that doesn’t mean sex doesn’t come with a price tag. STDs and unplanned pregnancy are a few of the obvious consequences, but hooking up can also result in emotional pain. These unfortunate possibilities also contribute to Wier’s belief about sex. “Even with all the contraceptives available, there is always the possibility of pregnancy and STDs,” said Wier. “I know that I could not handle being a mom at this point in my life, and I do not believe in abortion.” With such a high percentage of college students hooking up, the idea of someone not having sex is surprising, albeit refreshing. The temptation of sex is everywhere, so those who intentionally withhold the urge should be admired. “My boyfriend and I have been dating for four years now and we have not had sex. It isn’t always easy,” said Wier. “We have both decided that we want sex to be something special that we share with our future spouse, and we don’t want to ruin that if anything were ever to happen to our relationship.” Since casual sex is so easily accepted in college, those who are self-conscious about being abstinent should remember they aren’t alone. “I can think of maybe one time in my life that I have been judged for not having sex,” said Wier. “Just be confident and don’t let other people’s opinions about your sex life sway your decision. Most people actually think it’s cool.”

TOP 5 GIFTS

Treat him/ take him on a date—Give your boyfriend a break from breaking the bank and buy him dinner! It can be as low-key or as fancy as you both please, but make sure he knows the dress code too! The best part is that it’s a gift to both of you, especially if your man isn’t the type to typically go out for a nice dinner. “I’m a very traditional girl who loves dressing up… [so] my ideal gift would be a date to a fancy restaurant!” Julia Eve, sophomore art education major, said.
Bring the date night home—On a budget? Keep putting off and rejecting all those guy movies he suggests? Give your guy a movie night with his choices of flicks, movie-theater style popcorn, and his favorite candies. This gives you the perfect excuse to cuddle on the couch and avoid those Valentine’s Day crowds!

Make your memories last—A sweet and easy gift that doesn’t cost much at all is a photo album. Print out some of your favorite pictures of the best times you’ve had together and put those in the album. Write a note inside and ask him to keep adding pictures as you two keep making memories together!
Anything PINK: If it isn’t obvious by now, girls love Victoria’s Secret clothing, specifically their brand PINK. Their sweatpants and sweatshirts are always super soft, and they have the cutest designs and brightest colors. Yoga pants are always a safe way to go too; a girl can never have too many pairs. PINK items do tend to be kind of pricey though, so make sure to look for sales!
2
Go simple and homemade—“I would probably go with something simple. I love making cards, so I’d make him something special and then maybe ask where he’d like to go for dinner. After all, it doesn’t have to be something super extravagant because you should show love all year around,” Rachel Dula, junior publishing studies major, said. A handmade card is a great idea because it shows that you put a lot of thought into the gift and made it just for him. Or, if you’re confident in your home-ec skills, make a favorite meal or dessert for your boyfriend. After all, we’ve all heard many times that the way to a guy’s heart is through his stomach!

Play on a shared interest—Valentine’s Day can be a great reminder of why you and your guy are so into each other—for example, all the movies you both love or the fact that you have the same taste in music. It’s also a great chance to be silly and make him laugh, especially if you’re not really the sappiest couple: “I’d probably give him something special to us, like an inside joke thing or something we both like. Or I would combine those things. For example, if we both like Star Wars, I could give him Star Wars underwear.” Megan Huibregtse, junior graphic design major, said.

HER

Coffee shop gift card: Whether it is Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, a girl will definitely use a gift card for coffee, and probably in the matter of a week. Caffeine is a must, and any extra money towards it is always appreciated.
A picture frame of the two of you: This is an extremely easy, yet personal gift to give on Valentine’s Day. Simply pick out your favorite picture of you two, print it out and put it in a nice frame. To spruce it up, buy a colorful ribbon to tie around it, or write a message using a Sharpie marker to add a personal touch.
Jewelry: It may sound cliché, but girls always love a pretty piece of jewelry to add to their collection. Girls also love when their guy knows what they like and picks something that fits their taste. It does not have to be expensive, but just a simple heart necklace or shiny new earrings show that thought was put into a nice gift.
5
A letter: Another traditional suggestion, but girls are known to be suckers for a love letter. Not only is it free, but it gives you a chance to express your feelings without being put on the spot. It can be simple, but she will love to know how much she means to you.
