Whether it is admitted or not, everyone is guilty of at least one trend from the 90s and early 2000s. Fads and trends are a part of our culture — they come and go. As college students, it is always fun to reminisce on what once made us the coolest kids at the lunch table. Happy Throwback Thursday, ISU

Vidette staff members, readers and ISU athletes submitted their favorite throwback photos to be featured on the front page. These photos represent some of the popular trends from the 1990s and early 2000s. Page Design by Zack Applehans / Photo Editor

Perm-anently in the past Today’s hairdos seem pretty standard, but that’s what we thought when we rocked these not-so-attractive styles years ago:

We all remember it. Girls usually crimped their hair with heat from a crimping iron or by braiding the hair into tons of little strands, probably sleeping on it, and undoing the braids. Crimping hit its peak in the mid 1980s but its popularity continued into the 90s, even making a come back in 2007 and 2008. Often worn with curly hair and a big scrunchie, this was a popular style for girls in the 80s. The trend seemed that the higher the pony, the better.

Mullet

Short in the front and sides and long in the back. Rock stars Rod Stewart, David Bowie and Paul McCartney sported the look in the 1970s followed by country music singers Billy Ray Cyrus and Travis Tritt. The style was also worn by indie rock duo Tegan and Sara in the 2000s.

‘Rachel’ haircut

Jennifer Aniston’s 90s haircut on the show “Friends” inspired thousands of woman to get the same cut. The look became an iconic part of the 90s.

Up Late at State is sponsoring a movie night from 9 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Wehrenberg Theatre. Movies being shown will include Horrible Bosses 2 and Taken 3. Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided. “The tickets are going fast,” Julia Broskey, specialist of student activities and involvement with the Dean of Students Office, said. “We encourage students to get them as soon as possible.” “We wanted something fun for students since the weather is so cold,” Broskey said. “It’s fun to go off campus and watch movies in a

Beehive

Perm

That is, “a permanent wave.” This once popular hairstyle uses chemicals to break and reform the bonds of the hair. Usually in a salon, hair is washed and wrapped on a perm rod and lotion is applied to the base. This causes a chemical reaction that breaks some links in the protein chains, which softens the inner structure of the hair.

A particular kind of perm for men, this style gives hair a glossy, loosely curled look. It became popular because it was easier to take care of than the other popular style of the time, the relaxer. Michael Jackson wore the style on the cover of his album “Thriller” in 1982 and Samuel L. Jackson sported the look in “Pulp Fiction.” And let’s not forget some other classics: spiked hair on both genders, streaky highlights, enormous curls, feathered bangs and pin curls.

Jheri Curls

This was a woman’s style where long hair is piled up on the top of the head in a conical shape and pointing slightly backwards so that it looks like a real beehive. The look was made even more popular with Audrey Hepburn’s character in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in 1961.

VIDETTE EDITORIAL BOARD

Looking back: fads and trends define generations personality and character of a decade than what people realize. With social media outlets like Facebook, more and more fads are coming and going at a rate never seen before. Perhaps that is just American culture, as we are so quick to throw out the old and buy the new. Or maybe it is just that people are constantly looking for something to make them smile, whether it is a viral video like “Numa Numa” or some outlandish looking shoe.

I

n 1975, after listening to his friends rant about the annoyances of taking care of pets, Gary Dahl conceived an idea that would make him a millionaire. It was an invention that would, for a brief time, completely change A merican pets. It would be in many ways the “perfect pet,” one that was cheaper and simpler to care for than any other. That Christmas, America was gifted the Pet Rock. When we attempt to “define” generations, we look at culture. We examine ideologies and fashion as well as the monumental events that people were forced to respond and adapt to. Fads, on the other hand, tend to get overlooked. Usually silly and always fleeting, it is difficult to remember just how important they were to people at the time. Most people that lived through the 1970s would likely rather forget the Pet Rock and the money they spent on it. Those that actually owned one are likely still shaking their heads, wondering how they were possibly suckered into ever treating a stone like an animal. It is still one of the greatest mysteries of American culture. Yet every generation has them. Fads, that is. They are a bizarre occurrence, where for a brief time, an item, phrase or action

becomes immensely popular for seemingly no reason, only to fade into obscurity forever afterwards. Remembering them tends to elicit either a laugh or a shudder. After all, those that grew up in the 1990s and early 2000s had their own ridiculous fake pet. Remember “Tamagotchi,” those tiny key chains that contained a virtual creature that had to be fed and taken care of regularly? If you owned one but are afraid to admit it, that is OK. Most of the people around you are not likely to admit it either. At some point or another, you probably also owned a pair of Heelys, which you skated around on while wearing 10 “Livestrong” bracelets and listening to My Chemical Romance. If you were one of the many teenagers that fell into the emo fad, you are not alone. Most teenagers at the time did. But that is what makes fads so great. They create commonality

We will never know how the Internet became so crowded with grumpy cat memes, nor will we know how much longer Crocs and oversized sunglasses will be in style. It is also probably only a matter of time before selfies start seeming a little ridiculous as well. When that does happen, do not worry. Another ridiculous fad will soon take its place, and when it does, you will likely have plenty of laughs about it in the future.

among people. We may come from radically different backgrounds, but ask a random person what a “Snuggie” is and they likely know exactly what that word refers to. They probably even own one themselves. Generations may be impossibly complex, but fads are one of their enduring features that nearly everyone can recognize. People can live on the opposite side of the country from one another, but if they grew up in the 1980s, they almost certainly collected Garbage Pail Kids at some point and watched “Saved by the Bell.” In a country that is often divided by different beliefs and perspectives, fads may be one of the few things that really connect people to one another. Fads may not always reflect a cultural image that we can all be proud of, but for each generation, they are uniquely theirs. In many ways, they show more about the

The disappearing act of Internet trends BREANNA GROW Reporter

Trends are born and spread like wildfire on the Internet, then are quickly replaced by the next big thing. In the aftermath, it is hard to fathom why we had to show that viral video to every one of our friends. We just had to share it because it was on the Internet. Here are some of the most memorable online trends of days past.

Scary Email Pranks

Once upon a time, email was used largely for entertainment purposes. Some found it fun to include their friends in chain emails. They could contain a joke, a heart-warming story or sometimes even a little surprise. If you were ever viewing an email attachment and were suddenly faced with something straight out of “The Exorcist,” you knew you had great friends. If you turned around to realize you were being taped as you jumped out of your seat – well, that is true friendship.

Milk Gallon and Cinnamon Challenge

Something about the Internet seems to bring out the daredevil in us. For a while, we were obsessed with consuming food in dangerous quantities in front of a camera. While it is possible, though difficult, to consume a gallon of milk in one hour, swallowing a tablespoon of cinnamon is nearly impossible. In April 2013, about two years after the game reached peak popularity, a professor at University of Miami published a study linking cinnamon to pulmonary fibrosis, a scarring of the lungs. Despite the sobering facts, it was still funny to watch strangers spit out a cloud of orange dust on YouTube. Ave Rio/Staff Photographer

Heartland sophomore political science major Nathan Penn attempts the infamous milk gallon challenge.

The Harlem Shake

You would recognize that beat anywhere: it is “Harlem Shake” by Baauer, and thanks to a video clip uploaded by Filthy Frank, a video blogger, in February 2013, you cannot hear it without picturing that crazy shoulder dance. The original video, featuring four people in latex suits dancing to the song, quickly

inspired others to tape themselves doing the “Harlem Shake,” each with costumes and settings stranger than the last. This was not the first time we had heard of the Harlem Shake. The name originally belonged to a hip-hop dance style created by Harlem, New York resident “Al Bm.” The dance reached

its peak in 2001, when other NYCbased artists like Jadakiss and P. Diddy referenced it in their work.

Ice Bucket Challenge

It is hard to be sure where dumping buckets of ice on our heads started. The challenge became

known primarily as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by late July 2014 in support of the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) Foundation. Countless celebrities uploaded their challenge videos throughout the summer, but the best part was nominating our friends to make sure we got to shower them in ice.

Trends that should be left in 2014

The Normal Humor will tickle your funny bone

Compiled by: Kelsey Stiegman, Features Editor

1

Mullet Dresses Like the unfortunate hairstyle the dress was named after, this trend will be your future childrens’ prime source of ridicule. Sure, when these crazy hemlines first hit the runway the look was new and innovative. But that was over two years ago and now high-lows are just tired. Party in the front with business in the back looks just as bad as it sounds. It’s time for this trend to end.

2

Sock Buns These behemoths have been riding the noggins of college ladies everywhere and it’s finally time for their reign of terror to end. Sock buns are basically the Bump-Its of 2014. One can only hope that as time goes on women will learn that hiding foreign objects in their hair is never a good idea. Undone is the new done up, so trade in your uptight up-do for a laidback top-knot. It takes less time and you won’t have guys grabbing at your bun in search of the foam donut we all know is in there.

Paige Meisenheimer/Photographer

3

Sneaker Wedges I write this with a heavy heart, as sneaker wedges didn’t get enough time in the limelight. This trend was fun while it lasted, but sadly the brief fad has proven that sneakers will never be dressy no matter how hard we try. Worry not, ladies, you can still skip the heels (sometimes). Regular sneakers provide a cool alternative to those try-hard sneaker wedges. Feel free to wholeheartedly indulge in that fabulous pair of leather Nikes and further explore the wonders of arch support.

Crop Tops With Low-Rise Jeans The 90s are in fact making a comeback, but showing off your entire stomach Christina Aguilera style is not the way to go. She will never be classy no matter what decade you put her in and exposing yourself so thoroughly seems a little desperate. Kylie Jenner may rock this look regularly, but unless your mother is Kris Jenner you have no business wearing these two pieces together. Keep it modest and wear your crop with highrise jeans. And maybe a cardigan for good measure.

4

Flower Crowns This super unwearable hair trend showed up somewhere in between Lollapalooza and Coachella. The festival trend is slowly leaving us and so should these ridiculous headdresses. Unless you are a toddler or a magical fairy you have no business putting flowers on your head. If you still feel very strongly about hair accessories, try a sleek gold headband or a pretty clip. Learn from Salma Hayek’s mistake at the Golden Globes and STEP AWAY FROM THE FLOWERS.

The Normal Humor has been bringing laughter to campus since 2013. KELSEY FARRELL Reporter

Are you looking to practice your comedy skills? Ready to toss ideas off of your peers in an open, safe space? Or do you just want to laugh? The Normal Humor is on campus and is ready to tickle your funny bone. “The Normal Humor is a college studio-based open group where we teach certain forms of comedy and work together in the sessions to create and understand the craft of comedy,” Vanessa Garcia, a junior double majoring in English and acting and the

president of The Normal Humor, said. The Normal Humor has been on campus for a little over a year, providing workshops and common spaces where students can perform and hone their comedy skills. “This or g a n i z at ion star ted because Ross [Kugman] and I felt that there wasn’t any other medium of comedy besides Improv Mafia that ISU students can be a part of,” Garcia, said. “We wanted to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the different forms of comedy like sketch comedy, stand

up, etc.” Events are promoted via The Normal Humor’s Facebook page and are growing every semester. Last semester they performed a sold-out sketch comedy showcase in the style of The Neo-Futurists “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.” They plan on having two new showcases this semester. “TNH provides a sketch show each semester, biweekly workshops and a bi-weekly open mic for stand up. We also do fundraisers to help fund us as a club and to promote comedy on campus,” Garcia said.

As this RSO grows on campus, Vanessa Garcia promises that they will keep our campus laughing. “I hope that The Normal Humor will continue to gain a following of passionate students and for it to provide a safe environment to experiment with comedy at their own disposal.”

The Redbirds received 87 points, and also tallied one first-place vote. Wichita State received the most votes for first place, earning just seven more than the Redbirds. Along with the preseason voting came the Preseason All-Valley team. Catcher Jordan de los Reyes, infielder Kara Repp and pitcher Regan Romshek were the three women voted to represent the ISU squad. The Redbirds will start their season in just a couple weeks as they will head to Tampa, Fla., to compete against big-name teams such as Florida, Michigan and South Florida.
