1 RESIDENCE STUDIO Residence for Byomkesh Bakshi Byomkesh Bakshi is a popular, fictional Indian Sleuth who is based in Kolkata ,India. The studio is based on the premise that he comes to live in a pol house in Ahmedabad to aid the Government in high profile cases

A heritage site: A 200 years old haveli in Ahmedabad in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city
Juxtaposition of the old and the new:Creation of a workspace separated from the living quarters by a garden space. A black and white contrast between the living space and the workspace.

The research involved Primary case studies of firms located in and around Ahmedabad and secondary case studies of firms located abroad like IDEO and Gensler. Design ,as well as research were studied as functions of these Institutes. 8
The Water Project A co creating Institution engaging in designing of products,systems and awareness campaigns regarding issues pertaining to water conservation, purification and management.
The Inspiration for this project was a Stepwell, a traditional form of Architecture celebrating water , which also functions as a social space for gatherings and discussions.The plan follows a linear path which is expressed as a flooring pattern in the Studio spaces and as levels in the Amphitheatre area. 9
3 RETAIL STUDIO
TAMR
A Space for selling hand hammered copper and Brass products , with a demonstrative workshop and exhibition space. Selling an experience rather than a product in these times of online shopping.
The Craft Community of copper and Brass workers: The intent to showcase the craft processes involved in the making of the product and the time and energy invested by the craftsperson.
Contemporary copper proucts:Taking inspiration from the new forms, metaphors emerging from the materials in order to make the interiors more relevant to todays times.
A continuing element in space, starting from raw copper sheets to the final hand hammered form showcasing various finishes which runs through the entire space.
Client : Kansara ( Copper, Brass and Bronze) community of Nadiad , Gujarat

4 MATERIAL STUDIO
The studio dealt with the material exploration of corian, which is an artificial solid surface which has the possibility of being carved and CNC printed on.
CNC printing of Braille and other textures on corian which would help in perception and way finding of space,
Exploration of forms for the pod , a module which could be replicated elsewhere in all banks.
Frequent Skits and role plays to understand the user and behavior with respect to various forms on site.
The Studio allowed the entire batch to work in a team and use this material to create a bank consultation as well as a cafe space for visually challenged people. The material allowed braille as well as certain textures to be printed on it which would allow the visually challenged to navigate themselves through the space without external help.
The material also diffuses light and becomes translucent when carved allowing the textures to be perceived as images also.
The pod, after complete construction in the site,placed besides a bank and a cafeteria. 12

5 BASIC DESIGN
The studio explored the design principles of symmetry, translation, rotation etc..by using triangles with specific cut outs . These triangles were later designed to make tetrahedron modules and the design principles were explored in the third dimension.
The transformation of the black triangle using the geometry of intersecting circles which created a pattern inside the triangle.
The tetrahedrons were later scaled up and the spaces created by the 3 D compositions were imagined and sketched.

The Journey It is a short path, Starting with the steps steep. A ramp follows Offering two options. To see from within the whole Or from the whole see the within. If you choose the former You shall see triangular stalactites You shall see a thousand moons, A sight you shall no where else see.

If you choose the latter Going round and round in circles, You shall see boulders frozen in motion. Ahead comes a resting place And the boulders transform into grey flowers. With energy renewed, You see a winding curve ahead, You go ahead to find a cave unique. Finally you see your destination, A place where everything is seen. Everything makes sense And the journey is much more meaningful.
The units are then joined to make modules of 5,4,3,2,1 tetrahedron each .These modules are then joined to create a composition suggesting motion or the motion of tumbling down of these tetrahedrons.

6 FURNITURE DESIGN
Twister: A stool designed using MDF and Aluminium plates of 5 mm thickness. The strength of the Aluminium was maximized by twisting and folding the legs of the stool which allowed the load to be diverted in both directions. The twisting allowed the stool to sustain greater amount of load and made it possible for it to stand on 2 legs.
The studio was guided towards furniture design through material exploration. An understanding of the basic ergonomics was developed through recreating already made pieces of furniture like the Radice chair by Mattiazi. The furniture pieces were initially designed for cafes and the final furniture piece was developed with an understanding of public spaces.

The recreated chair using Ghana Teak wood without polish. The chair was made in the university workshop.
The making of this chair allowed us to understand the design and construction process as well as the details involved. The wood was carved into shape and the legs joined using 2 mortise and tennon joints which did not allow rotation of the leg in case of loosening and could withstand shear. The chair was later tested in various scenarios,like residential and office.
The original chair as designed by Mattiazi. The Chair is a three legged chair made of oak wood which comes in a variety of colours like yellow, black and blue.

6 FURNITURE DESIGN
Display element for Sabarmati railway Station , Ahmedabad The studio explored furniture in a public space. The issues of maintenance and durability became important factors in the designing of these furniture pieces. The studio was executed in teams of 5 and the final product was a prototype of the furniture piece.
The display element is designed to have adjustable surfaces and to be mobile. The multiple display angles offer different experience for viewers, as well as allowing the piece to fit in tight spaces. Both sides of the panels are usable for display, and the surfaces can take paper sizes from A5 to A1, both horizontal and vertical 18
The display element as a series of display fixtures which could define different spaces by experience and character in the station.
The display element is designed to display plates of A1 , A2 , A3, A4 and A5 . The holes in the MS plate correspond to that.
A study model exploring the different permutations of angles and positions which the display element could take and fixing the maximum and minimum angle of inclination.

7 PAPERCRETE
Papercrete is a building material which uses the compressive strength of paper , to replace the coarse aggregates of concrete. Paper wastes can be utilized for building by using this material.
The paper : waste paper , which is cut , soaked and beaten into pulp.
Design of the module which can be used to create an interior Perforated element.

Testing of blocks made with different proportions of paper, sand and cement.
Building with this material was a part of a summer school workshop in 2013.

Hollow and solid hexagonal modules stacked one on top of the other.
The Final Installation was composed of hollow and solid hexagonal modules which were joined with papercrete mortar . The installation was temporary in nature and formed a casual sitting space under the tree appropriate for reading or having a cup of tea. The hollow hexagonal modules allow visual access across the other side while still allowing privacy to the individuals using the space. The total process took 4 weeks from casting to construction.

9 CERAMICS
Fire Sculpture at CEPT University Fire Sculptures are site based sculptures made of clay which are fired on-site , which allows them to be large in scale. This particular structure was made during ROOTS , 2014 ,CEPT’s cultural festival. It was built over a period of 1 month and then left to dry for 7 days , followed by firing it for 72 hours on site. The structure is made of black clay ,high in Gangrene which allows it to have greater strength and porosity.
The material clay has allowed me to do various explorations ever since i joined a design collage. The act of making with this material interests me and motivates me to keep exploring this medium further.

Explorations with Clay Marbling Clay marbling is a process of using two or more different coloured clays to create ceramic objects which are then fired. The mixing of these clays can lead to either natural ,random patterns or it can be specific forms and geometrical patterns.
