 The Cow Racing festival is actually held for paying respect to the ancestors of the Khymes. Every year this festival takes place either during the late eighth or during the early ninth part of lunar month.  The festival is held at Niu Bay which is also known as the seven mountains, in the An Giang province. Organized basically on a typically flat rice field, measuring about 200 X100 meters, with respect to the length and width respectively, it is made sure that this respective field is absolutely muddy.
 In fact, it is quite mainly because of this muddiness that this festival is largely known to be popular. So much so is the field made muddy, that some people actually claim that there is no muddier festival as this one. This unique and really exciting festival is generally held when the farmers generally prepare for their respective autumn-winter paddies.
 Initially this cow racing festival, as per some of the Buddhist monks, was held in one really large and a vast rice- field. This was done by a senior monk in a Khymer pagoda, not just for the cows of this one village but also for the cows of the other respective villages as well, to know which pairs of the cows can run really fast and also to know which of them are quite strong enough for the sake of ploughing.

However, with years rolling by, this cow festival soon took the shape of a fun-filled sport, that was held for both as a holy occasion along with providing entertainment to the villagers.
Cows can bring good luck to them. And it is due to this, these villagers don’t sell these cows; instead they keep them quite like an asset or a precious property. So, the next time, you get the chance to visit Vietnam, don’t ever miss this awesomely spectacular event of cow racing.
