Greetings Sorors of Sigma Eta Zeta Chapter, It is with great pride that I join with the Sorors of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the community in congratulating you on your 10th Annual R.O.O.T.S. Celebration, whose theme this year is “Weaving the Fabric of Our Heritage.” I appreciate the opportunity to join you in saluting this year’s 2011 honorees. R.O.O.T.S. “Distinguished Zeta” La Sonya Yvonne Gibbs is a native of California. She attended CSU, Northridge where she earned two Bachelor Degrees in Child Development and African American Studies in 1990. She proceeded to earn a Masters degree in Public Administration from CSU, Dominguez Hills in 2001. Soror Gibbs became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in the Omega Kappa Chapter at California State University Northridge in 1988. She has worked diligently for the beloved sisterhood. During her twenty two year membership La Sonya has held numerous elected offices on the graduate and undergraduate level including President, Executive Board Chair, 3rd Vice President, Secretary and Parliamentarian. Additionally, she has functioned as Youth Advisor and actively participated on various committees including, but not limited to, State Meeting, By-Law, Budget, Scholarship, and Membership. Under her leadership as ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) Co-Chair for nine years, her ongoing involvement gained Omicron Rho Zeta chapter recognition annually on the state and regional levels and on the national level in 2004, 2006 and 2008. She answered the call of Zeta and served as the Southern California State Director (2006-2008); Pacific Region Reclamation and Incentives Coordinator (2008-2010), and she is currently the National Co-Director of Youth Auxiliaries and the Pacific Region Capital Campaign Co-Chair while remaining an active member of Omicron Rho Zeta graduate chapter in Inglewood, CA. As a Golden Life Member, Soror Gibbs’ dedication to our sorority is genuine and she supports its growth and strives to portray a positive image while exemplifying the ideals of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She has worked for Los Angeles County for twenty one years. During the past fifteen years she has worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). She is currently a Children’s Services Administrator II for the Youth Development Services Division, providing services and resources to transition age youth exiting the foster care system. Soror Gibbs is a proud mother of two daughters (ages 17 and 15), who are both members of the Zeta Archonette youth auxiliary group; and also the former co-owner of the franchise, Color Me Mine (Corona, CA).

“Zeta of the Year”
Felicia Michelle Thompson was born on October 30, 1982 to the lovely parents of Henry and Gwendolyn Thompson and raised in Long Beach, California. As a child, Felicia loved to play the board game ,Monopoly; for she always wanted to own a Boardwalk and Park Place. Felicia enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Felicia is a well-rounded woman. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a minor in Political Science from CSU Dominguez Hills, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from CSU Long Beach. She is currently working on her second Master’s degree in Counseling and Marriage Family Therapy. Since November 2, 2007, Felicia has been a vibrant, active and proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. ~ Sigma Eta Zeta chapter. She has had the opportunity to serve in various positions and committees within the chapter, including: 2nd Vice President (2008-present), Scholarship Chair, Tassels for Teens Chair, Bylaw, Budget, Nominations & Elections and R.O.O.T.S. committees. Soror Thompson also finds time during her busy schedule to mentor our Zeta Youth and build upon the foundation laid by our founders. With knowledge and understandings of Zeta’s principles, Felicia hopes to one day serve as the National President. Soror Thompson credits her success in Zeta to God, and her family. She is so proud to share this great honor with them. Soror Thompson quotes Maya Angelou by saying, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
She is employed for AltaMed Health Services Corporation – Youth Services department as a Case Manager and has gained the knowledge and leadership abilities to provide services for underserved women and children.

R.O.O.T.S. “Undergraduate Zeta of the Year” Ashlee Wilkins, a native of northern California, was born on March 12, 1988. As an AfricanAmerican woman who continually strives to serve as an inspirational role model to her community, she is determined to leave her imprint on society through her work. During Ashlee’s primary and secondary education, she attended thirteen different public schools. These moves were the product of a single parent’s financial instability. Although there were times that seemed more unbearable than others, she learned to appreciate the simple things in life. In the fifth grade she and her mother lived in a motel for about a year. It was then that Ashlee knew she wanted a better life for her family and herself. These events have continued to inspire and motivate her to pursue her goals; understanding that the only way to do this was to attend college and excel academically. She is comfortable sharing her story with others, so that they too can achieve their goals no matter what obstacles or boundaries may be in their path. Believing in herself has been her greatest lesson learned as it is essential to stand firm on ones morals and values no matter what others may say. With this revelation, she found a new confidence which she uses to help others. Ashlee is currently a graduating senior at CSU, Long Beach, where she will be obtaining her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in Spring 2011. For the past three years, Ashlee has served as an Academic Peer Advisor with the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at California State University, Long Beach. As a Peer Advisor, she provides academic advising to economicallydisadvantaged, first generation college students. She has found it incredibly fulfilling to assist students with their academic endeavors while helping them explore and evaluate major and professional possibilities. Ashlee is also an active member of the Lois J. Swanson Leadership Academy, the Black Scholars Association and the Human Resource Management Association. Raised as an only child, she yearned for the sisterhood she found in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. She has been a member on the Devastating Delta Eta Chapter since Fall 2007, where she has served as the Secretary and Treasurer. Ashlee gives thanks and praises to her Lord and Savior for keeping her throughout the years, and blessing her with opportunities to further her education and share her story. She also thanks God for blessing her with a strong mother who groomed her into the woman she is today and is appreciative of the love of her life, Robert, for always supporting and encouraging her. Last but not least, she is grateful for the sisterhood she found in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

R.O.O.T.S. Entrepreneur & Motivational Speaker Candida Mobley is the Founder and CEO of Voices, Inc., a full service marketing and communications firm based in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Wright’s desire to empower the underserved started her on a career journey that has been life changing.
In 1983, Ms. Mobley’s vision was to create an opportunity that would not just sell products and services but would influence powerful and positive change for the target audience and the client. Ms. Wright’s marketing strategies utilize a “grassroots” approach that bridge the gap between corporate and Government entities and the Urban community. Ms. Mobley is dedicated to providing her clients, both corporate and government, with quality, research-based, creative marketing strategies that educate, inspire, and uplift the disenfranchised. She has developed and executed general market and target market advertising campaigns as well as community outreach events for clients that include: U. S. Housing and Urban Development, County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services Bioterrorism Emergency Preparedness Program, LA County Office of Women’s Healthy Cervical Cancer Prevention, Charles R. Drew University, National Association of Women Business Owners, U. S. Census Bureau, McDonald, Taco Bell, etc. She has received the “Partnership Award” from the U.S. Census 2000 in addition to special congressional and citywide recognition for her efforts on behalf of the community and government. She also received the “Small Business of the Year” Award from the California Black Chamber of Commerce in 2002. Ms. Mobley belongs to a number of organizations, including: National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) where she was the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Black Business Association (BBA) as Parliamentarian, The Links, Beverly Hills West Chapter, L.A. Rotary Club, lifetime member of The New Leaders, lifetime member NAACP, West Angeles Church of God in Christ 2000-2003 Board of Trustees, California Black Chamber of Commerce, and Los Angeles Westside Area Planning Commission (2000). Ms. Mobley holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and has completed the Management Development for Entrepreneurs (MDE) Program at the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management. "As an entrepreneur, it can be challenging to pursue your dreams. But to continue that pursuit when everyone else would understand if you just walked away is a test of true strength.”

R.O.O.T.S. CELEBRATION Lance Robert is passionate about helping young people control their academic destiny. He served as an award winning high school teacher for a number of years and was founding Chairman of the Ethnic Studies department and the Multicultural Center. He also founded and developed a Rites of Passage Empowerment Program – a mentoring program for youth in the City of Long Beach . He presently serves as Chairman for the Youth Mentoring program sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Long Beach which meets every third Saturday at CSULB. He currently works as an Instructor in the Behavioral/ Social Science Department and the Student Success Center at Los Angeles Southwest College.
Dr. Cheryl L. Browne, a Carson native, is active in the community and conducts many lectures and speaking engagements throughout the year, including an annual cardiovascular disease workshop for African Americans in the South Bay community. At the age of 23, Cheryl L. Browne made a decision to become a physician after she was informed that her husband had an infection, which could possibly cause death. After observing how caring, patient and understanding his physician was, she motivated to become the caring physician she is today. Dr. Browne is the Physician-in-Charge of the Continuing Care Department which includes home health, hospice, palliative care, medical social service, geriatrics, and extended care facilities; and she’s also Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee at Kaiser Permanente, South Bay.
In 2008, at the age of 16, Kelly Anyadike made her way into the Guinness Book of world Records by being the youngest African-American female to solo in four different fixed-wing aircraft on the same day. Kelly has been involved in Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum’s flight program since she was 15. She is currently attending UCLA. Kimberly Anyadike never remembers a time when she wasn’t interested in flying. Her passion for aviation began with a 20-minute demo flight at Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, a flight school and youth mentoring center in Compton, CA. In 2009, Kimberly became the youngest African American female to pilot an airplane cross-country. Upon graduation in 2012, she plans to apply to Stanford, Yale or Harvard Universities. Kimberly’s career goal is to become a cardio-vascular surgeon with a pilot’s license.
Sigma Eta Zeta Chapter Our History The "idea" of establishing a Long Beach graduate chapter began in the late 1980's by collegiate members attending California State University, Long Beach. Around the mid 1990's, the "discussion" on chartering this chapter began to brew. It wasn't until the Spring of 2000, that actually chartering a Long Beach graduate chapter was fully grasped, formed and implemented. Thus, Sigma Eta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Long Beach, California on April 12, 2001 by ten remarkable women.
The vision of Sigma Eta Zeta chapter derives from the collective view of the future held by its financial members. Sigma Eta Zeta chapter (Long Beach, CA) is home to a diverse group of young, college educated, professional, and executive women dedicated to promoting the ideals of Sisterly Love, Finer Womanhood, Scholarship and Community Service and working to improve the lives of men, women, children, and seniors through ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel). We are proud sponsors for one collegiate chapter: Delta Eta chapter (CSULB); one adult auxiliary: Long Beach Zeta Amicae; and three national youth affiliate groups: Pearlettes (ages 4-8), Amicettes (ages 913) and the Archonettes (ages 14-18). The Vision Sigma Eta Zeta chapter is made up of many voices, many faces, and have many views, yet we are bound together by a common goal…by ONE vision.
