Chihuahuan Desert Plants an exploration of desert plants through sketching
The Walter Cronkite Plaza At UT Austin, The College of Radio, Television, and Film hosts a series of screenings throughout the year that showcase student’s work from semester projects. While several of these events occur in theaters throughout Austin, none are displayed at the College of Communication. The vision is to create a screening area for students to express their art. The design process begins with a simplified circulation diagram which develops into a curvilinear gesture. The gesture is the backbone of the project, as it not only informs the design moves, but challenges the rectilinear architecture that borders the plaza. The design moves are extrude, offset, and enclose, and these manifest in the form of the screen, the path, and the seating and planting element. The drawings illustrate the relationship between form and gesture, and presents a space that inspires expression through cinematic art.

FALL EVENING
Tiny Lounge Chair The Tiny Lounge Chair was inspired by design, material, and their relationships with the body. A series of studies on ergonomics and mid-century-modern precedent led the design to emphasizing nude, honest, and iconic as the defining characteristics. Through an exploration of material and design principals that stress the bare-essentials, the chair has been rendered nude. Ash, a wood commonly used in the production of baseball bats, was chosen for the framework because of its durability, softness, and lightness. The seat and backrest were constructed from Baltic birch plywood, and cork, for their sustainability, and economy. These three materials fit together, creating a smooth transition between lines and planes, light and dark. To achieve an iconic look, the design process was initiated by function. Ideas for the dimensions, and angles were explored through an adjustable chair rig, and informed by multiple visits to vintage, and contemporary furniture stores. Through careful drawing, modeling, and craftsmanship, the Tiny Lounge Chair moves beyond function, becoming a gesture of the body.
