ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Master in Architecture | University of Cape Town Bachelors in Arch. Tech Candidate Architect | Designer | Photographer

2020

HELLO, I AM VIKASH. Welcome to my creative world. I am a creative thinker, hard-working individual who is passionate about designing for environmental, social and infrastructural cohesion. This portfolio of work expresses and explores my interests in the realm of architectural design, detailing, visualisations and photography. This includes selected work produced during my postgraduate and undergraduate studies. The remainder includes a few key projects which I have worked on in practice as well as freelance visualisation works. My passions in the built environment have always encompassed the connection that nature has on humans and their behaviour. This involves the relationship that people have through interacting with a site, a certain material, light and dark spaces, small or large spaces as well as the elements that offer sustainable value to communities. I hope you enjoy this journey through my work, as much as I enjoyed producing it.

This dissertation aims to rethink how we are exposed to media and how breaking the boundaries of conventional ideologies can result in a more interactive and transparent platform, which moves away from existing stateled, singular-functioning and unresponsive broadcasting buildings.

nt

a ac

st.

ap

These ideas build upon the notion of democratic and responsive public space as well as the accessibility of media communicated to the broader public. Design based strategies are presented in aid of the transparency that broadcasting buildings demand, to become socially responsive with diversified functions. The aim of this is to shift publics opinion of broadcasting to a more positive opinion that considers it to be receptive rather than authoritative.

ail

ret

i.

citi my stops bus

For many decades, singular-functioning broadcasting institutions, designed without accommodating for change, have controlled media distributed to the public. The intrinsic relationship of these building forms that lack public responsiveness is prevalent, creating a separation between the pedestrian and the built fabric. The design engages and challenges the existing, rigid, closed-off building with the introduction of a new social narrative by means of collaborative, cross-programmed spaces.

This dissertation explores adaptive-reuse as a means of democratizing the SABC institution in Cape Town. The design inquiry explores an architectural response propelled with a desire to achieve transparency in broadcasting while articulating a relationship between public and private. The outcome of this is a proposal that allows the creative nature of architecture to facilitate the role of bringing people together in an age of digital media stored in the cloud.

TESTING URBAN GROUND BAS Honours - Simulated Office Group Project In collaboration with M. Klose, M. Haselau and B. Croome. Date: Location: Type:

2018 District Six, Cape Town Inner-city Housing

The following project, situated on the edge of District Six attempted to propose ideas and prepositions that challenge the normative of Social Housing. Many of the memories within the community of District Six are lost but nor forgot. The unity within the community, the social activities amongst children and walking as a constant means of egress are many key thresholds to be reimagined. The scheme’s main architectural objective is to facilitate urban access beneath the threshold of the building by providing a levelled and raised plinth to the main road. This portion of the underside of the building addresses visual access concerns to the castle of Good Hope as well as frame vistas to this historical setting. The materiality of the North facade is directly informed by its urban presence, in response to the historical context while the South facade is broken and has variety in silhouette. The scheme accommodates a restitutional housing proposal located on the ninth floor of the building. This space provides opportunity as a halfway house to formal restitutional housing located near to the CBD with employment opportunity. Locating these resititution units on the roof level inverts the typical model, by giving prime real estate to those which inherently may not have received it, while still associating its inner spaces with adaptive and easily appropriated infrastructure in a domestic scaled typology.

MAITLAND SOCIO-ECO HUB BAS Honours - Major Design Project Date: Location: Type:

2018 Maintland, Cape Town Sustainable Community Centre

The lack of pedestrian, social and green spaces is a highly prevalent and pessimistic factor within the broad industrialized Maitland context. This is evident through analyzing the context, as well as mapping and analyzing the movement and sight lines of people through stop-motion photography. The project, within the ‘Adapt Studio’, involves the adaptive reuse of the chosen Kellcor House in Maitland. The form comprises of a 4-story mixeduse concrete frame and brick infill structure, on the corner of Voortrekker and Ainsdale Roads, designed in the 1960s. The ground floor is vehicular predominant, occupied by fitment centers and motorcycle repairs with private textiles companies occupying the upper floors. The intention was to adapt underutilized functions, spatially and in terms of form, physically – through carving, weaving fragmentation and separation. The scheme intends to stimulate movement through physical activity and motion, creating spaces to learn in isolation, in a communal environment and within nature; as well as to pay respect to the former fitment centres through the creation of communal hands-on workshop spaces. Structurally, the existing skeletal frame and cores are retained, accompanied by on-site bricks recycled into perforated brick facades. This is complimented by a secondary layer of glass and locally sourced timber. Ecological implementations include green balconies and roofs, indoor and outdoor vegetable gardens, rainwater harvesting tanks accompanied with a grey water treatment plant and north-facing solar water panels.

The most prominent feature is the ‘green’ northern façade, covering 2000m2 - making it the largest and most functional ‘living façade’ in comparison to similar others. The facade is composed of 100% recyclable ABS plastic modules, which overlap with another, making the entire living wall seamless and completely waterproof. What also makes the living wall successful is the automatic irrigation system, controlled slow release fertilizers, ease of maintenance and adequate drainage systems.

Intermittent water supply, where modules overlap to irrigate planters

The following is an extract from a research case study, presented as part of the Advanced Building Technology electives. Two areas of focus in line with my interests were established initially, namely sustainable design systems and living green walls as a facade. These areas limited my scope, towards ideas of a variety of buildings towards a case study. The Venlo City Hall stood out for me due to its outstanding living wall and it’s element, as well as the overall use of a variety of sustainable systems.

CREATIVE LEARNING HUB BTech 4th year Major Design Project Date: Location: Type:

2016 Riebeeck Square, Cape Town. Institutional

The aim of this project is to challenge our preconceptions about how we learn and what kind of learning spaces are required to meet the contemporary needs of students and educators. It is the intention of this project to explore innovative alternatives which respond to the relationship between pedagogy, space and technology. My design intention and methodologies are based around creating an explorative and didactic ground scape environment and structure, capturing deduced emulations of the layers that make up the medium of film. The intention was to create different conditions that allow the students, users and broader public to understand a great measure of intangibles or often immeasurable notions and conditions that are best understood intuitively through experience. 23

LOTUS PARK ECD CENTRE BTech 4th year Participatory Design Project Date: Location: Type:

2016 Lotus Park informal settlement, Cape Town Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre

This project focuses on social understanding and tectonic innovation. As such this project aims to expose you to architectural practice in an informal context, where the role of the architectural professional is much broader than in traditional commercial practice. The proposal accommodates indoor and outdoor learning spaces for various age groups of up to 80 children, staff offices, prep rooms and necessary servant spaces. The design contributes to the positive making of quality space, not only for itself but for the area and street that it is situated in.

Strip Section 01

Sustainable technologies are employed, including natural ventilation mechanisms, solar energy, a windmill pump and rainwater harvesting tanks. The design technology is mainly labour intensive, to provide work for the local community, comprises of light steel frame structures, which are ideal for further expansion, accompanied by mainly mass monolithic rammed earth walls with intermittent mosaic artwork cladding. In-depth urban analysis of the settlement as well as surrounding transport routes, a narrowed down site breakdown of its edges and nodes and constant meetings with the community members were carried through towards producing a successful project that was presented to VPUU and the members of Lotus Park.

DRAWING

CONSTRUCTION SECTIONAL DETAILS PROJECT

The first stage of the project focused on designing a safe space as a Womens Shelter in Cape Town. The latter, which is shown on the right, involved a full-set of working drawings to be produced from room layouts, electrical fit-outs, detail sections, joinery work and a finishing schedule - as you would do for any project in practice. The design itself focuses on the mental, physical and spatial experience of abused women and children entering this environment. A central spine became important, from the entrance to the end of the building. This allows women and children to be transitioned from a public street space, through a semi-public lounge and kitchen area, further down to private sleeping areas. This is complimented with flowing exterior circulatory paths, which guide the individual to a farm-like atmosphere at the end of the path, celebrating freedom, light and openness.

METHOD OF SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION: 3.1.)

The staircase sequence of construction is fairly simple, and can be seen as modular. Firstly two main structural steel columns are welded to a base plate and bolted on all four sides for structural stability to pad foundations on the ground floor. main structure

The brief of the project was to analyse an existing staircase of choice, which can be physcially measured and accessed. The process involved carefully measuring up the existing elements, photographing it and researching on potential details.

consisting of 2 columns which are welded on the landing frame get bolded to the ground. 3.2.)

4 Rectangular hollow sections are welded to form a rectangular frame and welded on top of the steel columns, forming the structure for the intermediate landing.

3.2.)

The stringers, which are cut off site, are thereafter positioned and welded to the ground at the starting point, as well as welded to the landing frame structure and the return upwards to the first floor, where it is welded to a steel plate fixed to the R.C slab.

3.3.)

Steel flanges providing support for the treads are thereafter welded between the stringers are the correct and equal spacing's, with the timber treads thereafter being screwed and fixed above the supports.

The staircase itself was simple and modern, composed of a steel frame sub-structure and support, glass balustrade panels and a timber handrail. A further layer was analysing the existing staircase in relation to its compliance or non-compliance with the SANS regulations.

3.4.)

The glass balustrade panels are thereafter fixed to the stringers with patented stainless steel fixings sealed with silicone sealants, followed by the timber handrail getting fixed with patented fixings to the glass balustrade panels.

A key strategy was to maximize and make use of the existing structure as much as possible of the connected buildings, while accommodating flexible room layouts, sun-shading devices and sufficient ventilation. The ground floor accommodated co-working and boardroom facilities. The upper 3 floor floors accommodated standard rooms while the 4th floor accommodated penthouse suits and an outdoor pool lounge, resulting in approximately 70 keys.

MTHATHA CASINO dhk Architects Type: Entertainment Involvement: Design Development Location: Mthatha, South Africa Team: J. Struwig & V. Parbhoo

The proposed casino is located in a prime position between an existing mall and hotel, with a possibility of future development in the adjacent open land. The free-standing casino aims to accommodate cinemas, restaurants, vehicular display area and necessary back of house facilities on ground floor. Elevators take you up to the first floor, where your casino is housed, with provision for a crèche, ablutions and high-limit area. The client also requested provision for a heli-pad on the roof-terrace, which was an exciting proposal. I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with such a unique project from the initial stages to its current design development stage. I worked directly with one of the associate directors during the ongoing design stage, having a large responsibility of generating the building in Revit, generating draft renders, liaising between consultants as well as compiling presentation documents for the clients approval.

THE MATRIX dhk Architects Type: Entertainment Involvement: Concept Design Location: Mthatha, South Africa Team: J. Struwig & V. Parbhoo

The design intention was to respond to an existing urban morphology, while integrating the architecture into the existing city fabric. The design proposal aims convert the three existing buildings into one development. The ground floor aims to accommodate retail and a car showroom, making full use of the existing car lifts in the Matrix buildings. The rest of the development aims to accommodate up to 140 apartments, a gym for residents, a sky garden, a portion of offices as well as the required basement parking. I was involved with the project from the inception and concept design stages. I was in charge of generating an array of site analysis and urban informant diagrams, together with generating mass forms of the existing buildings that we could work with. Precedent analysis and sketch proposals developed thereafter of our intentions of the forms, how we could integrate the existing with the new, possible views obtained as well as rough area calculations of how many apartments and retail units we could accommodate.
