THE THREE-WAY Dehradun, India

Student Hostel| Academics Winter 2018 | Individual

Keywords: Hills, Flexbile, Connection, Movement The proposal is for a boys hostel design which is a part of residential school campus , located on scenic hills of Dehradun. Sloping terrain and frequent monsoon were the major challenges for the design, which have been made a part of the hostel building. Considering the user group and the philosophy which I had to include, the building has several terraces accessible at different levels. It also provides students with a garden full of flowers within the building.

Everyone deserves a better car.

Everyone deserves a Volkswagen.

The foundation of Expo design is driven by the idea of building an expo for everyone, Das Autoexpo or "People's Autoexpo". The design philosophy is inspired from the principles of Volkswagen's latest logo:

People will be able to experience the effects of the new brand design at the Das Autoexpo in Bhopal. The inner transformation of the brand, its vision and its new attitude will be unveiled to the outside world in the Expo.

Each space inside the expo has different interiors to change the feel as a visitor moves forward. Starting from flooring pattern to lighting, the interior elements are chosen wisely. Exposed roof and ceiling gives a industrial feel to the spaces.

The display spaces are such that one gets a glimpse of the cars from the exterior of the Expo as well, henceforth developing a curosity among them to feel the cars closely.

The visitors also get the opportunity to walk outside the expo building and have a look at the cars from different perspective and mood. Shaded areas helps in avoiding the harsh sun during the day and at night creates a good ambience.

The public spaces are planned in a way that someone passing by near the hotel would get a glimpse of the interiors and liveliness inside, developing an interest to visit the Pluto Paradise.

The road stretch infront of the Banquet hall experiences alot of traffic/people throughout the day due to variety of facilities provided like Retail shops, multi-cuisine restaurant and also kitchen storage.

Multiple drop-offs helps in lowering the traffic congestion in any particular road stretch. Those who are visiting for stay purpose and those who just want to have some good time at restaurant, would follow a different movement path inside the hotel.

KANPUR Situated on the west banks of the Ganges River is Kanpur, the largest city in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It started of as a small village in the late 18th century and later became an important defence headquarter, and finally developed into an industrial hub during the British Raj. Today, it is the 11th most populous city of India and is the centre of commercial, industrial and educational activities in Uttar Pradesh.

Kanpur has a limited number of public spaces. A riverfront would serve as the ideal connect between nature and people.

The development of a riverfront, would restore the degrading water quality of Ganges due to industrial waste, fishing, etc.

Craftsperson Documentation| Competition Winter 2018| Group

Keywords: Unknown, Craft, Tribe Seeeking inspiration from nature and everyday things were the craftsperson of Anuppur District, Madhya Pradesh. These were the members of Ayam Gond Tribe- whose distinctive skills of wood carving still stand unknown to many. In the recent years, this craft has been in a state of decline. The documentation has very carefully identified the craft and the whole process a craftperson follows to get the final outcome.

SAJA WOOD Used for making door and window frames

NATURAL GUM Used to stick materials together and wooden nails further strengthen the bond

KHAYAM WOOD Used for making Mukta

DAUSJA WOOD Used for making Stabha or Pillars

WORKING ENVIRONMENT In the present context, the craftsperson faces a lot of problems in his working environment. Long and daily powercuts force the craftperson to work outdoors. Even when working indoors, the enclosures create a hazardous environment for the craftsperson to work. This is due to the wood dust and effluents released in the process of wood polishing. Heavy rains and storm are not only a hindrance to work but are also responsible for the detoiration of resources. In such cases, the storage area available might also not be enough to accomodate all raw materials. All these factors combined inhibit not just his practice, but also prevent him from showing his true potential.

VIKAS SINGH

STEP 1 : CUTTING The type of wood plays an important role in wood carving. Hardwoods are difficult to shape, whereas softer woods are easier to carve but are prone to damage. The choice depends on the requirements of the carving process.

STEP 2 : SHAPING The craftperson takes the selected piece of timber and adzes out the required shape. The Rukhani, a curved blade, is used to remove large portions of wood smoothly. And smoothing is done using tool Rinda.

STEP 3 : DESIGN SKETCHES Once the shaping of the wood is done, the desired design for abstract form is drawn roughly over the wooden piece. It is done roughly using a pencil or a chalk to carry out the further carving process.

STEP 5 : FINE DETAILING Tailor made tools are used to precisely detail out the actual form of the design over the deeply carved wooden piece.

TOOLS AND PROCESS

PORTFOLIO

The intricate art of wood carving is extremely time consuming and hence poses a weak competition to machinedriven manufacturing industries. It struggles to hold its ground, fetching less money and eventually diminishing. Stakeholder priority is driven by capital invested and hence the timber industries dominate the access to raw materials. Lack of govermental support and community mobilization has rendered these craftspersons helpless.

44 VIKAS SINGH

An art being restricted to a single medium is bound to lose its tracks with time. If its voice is translated through multiple media, it might be able to lengthen its span on the timeline. Hence, we recommend carving to be assimilated into structures other than door sculptures show a greater prospect to communicate this on a global level. Weaker economies like Kenya and Malaysia, with low manpower and resources, bear more fruits of revenue from their native arts while a nation like India with greater, fails to do so. The craftsperson can also make improvisation to existing wooden textures such as partition wall, doors, etc. Dhokal singh's family is the last of a lineage of Ayam people practicing the art of wood carving. Inspired from his gradmother(Bhalidi Singh Ayam), Dhokal Singh and his brother( Naval Singh Ayam), are the only practicioners of this craft. Both work in different contexts: Naval Singh in village, Dhokal Singh in the city under different contractors. They have been working relentlessly to sustain the condition. Hence it is our responsibility to realize the existence of this age-long craft and contribute in reviving it.

Keywords: Pandemic, Physical Distancing, Bench The idea was to rethink the design of public seatings for the new normal where it is necessary to maintain a distance, and to prefer physical distancing over social distancing. Instead of designing something totally new, a little adjustment to the existing benches can do the work. Pets could be a mean of keeping people at a distance while seating whilst not restricting the conversation between them.

Comforting Object| Competition Winter 2020| Group

Keywords: Pandemic, New Normal, Comfort The proposal focuses on the nitty gritty of our daily schedules, the life cycle of a "work from home, physical distancing" paradigm, where how normal it should be to want solitude, and be with yourself enough. The idea of normalising a disconnect from the bustle - a disconnect enough. The reality if wanting the disconnect but also knowing that one isn't in any sense truly "alone".

48

VIKAS SINGH

We desire...

Solitude

Situations and people tossed together had some inevitable consequences in lifes of the priviliged to not be loomed by the shadow of the disease itself that was around in every corner. To all of us who could be engulfed in the luxury and the warmth; of our loved ones, of our homes, of our pajamas; the relaxation somehow turned to boredom. It shouldn't be a surprise how a new normal dragged from exciting to monotonous to unbearable.

Personal Space

Connect with Nature

How to...

1. Assemble the Structure

2. Cover with the material available at home

Allowing that space- that liminal identity- acknowledging the need- that, is the new normal. And this product is like any experiential art, is the sheet of paper- that idea - the manual to achieve that. A DIY if you will, to make that space with things and materials which would be easily obtained.
