VIKINGGENETICS SIRE DIRECTORY 2013

VikingGenetics

Productivity, Healthy, Reliable Viking Australia is now into its third year of trading in Australia. We thank you all for your support as we continue to promote high producing, healthy, long lasting cows from the NTM (Nordic Total Merit) system that delivers very reliable data. In 2013 we have included two more very important management tools in the sire proofs to help improve your bottom line.

preferred third breed in a three way rotational crossbreeding program. If a red sire has 12,5% or greater Holstein content it is stated. Sires that are 12.5% Holstein or lower are recommended for use on Holsteins in a crossbreeding program. Our high health Holstein and Jersey sires are also important to progressive cross breeders which further enhance the heterosis effect.

1. Semen fertility. Be sure to read and understand the enclosed information on semen fertility ratings for every sire in the catalogue.

New Sires for 2013. We have nine new sires for this year (5 Holstein, 3 Reds and 1 Jersey). All have high NTM values ensuring that we bring only the very best bulls that Viking has to offer for our conditions. Many of the following pages focus on the Viking NTM which is so important to understand ,as accepting and using this system gives you the fruit of someone else hard labour! Take the time to study the information in this herd health improvement manual as so much more profit can be achieved in your business by maintaining high production and breeding healthier, long lasting cows that make you more money, cost you less and free up some time by not dealing with so many sick cows!

2. Growth Rate. You will see this included for each sire in the production index. Do not confuse this with stature as it is an index on weight gains (not height) based on bullcalves reared for slaughter. Sires with growth rates above 100 tend to have vigorous well doing calves, sires below 100 generally are the more angular (finer calf) that still grow well but do not carry as much condition. We also have information on crossbreeding as Viking Reds are recognised around the world as the

nTM – nordic Total Merit What is NTM? NTM (Nordic Total Merit) is the most complete total merit index in the world. NTM consists of more than 40 subtraits combined into 12 main traits as shown in the right figure.

3% 6%

1%

7%

31%

2%

When you use NTM as selection criteria, you obtain positive progress for all traits of economic importance in the dairy cattle industry. You obtain the highest progress from the “most expensive traits” such as fat and protein yield and health traits as shown in the figure to he right.

5%

5%

2%

14%

Longevity index and production index have the highest correlation of all traits to the NTM, showing that the NTM is optimized to produce long living and high producing cows.

13% 7%

6%

Weight of main traits in NTM for VikingHolstein (Similar for VikingReds and Jerseys)

How are the indexes in NTM expressed? EBVs of all animals are adjusted in such a way that animals in the base population have an average index of 100. For all traits a rolling base consisting of cows from Denmark, Sweden and Finland that are 3-5 years of age at the date of publication is applied. 34.1% 34.1% The Standard Deviation is a statistic that tells you how widely spread from the average the scores of all bulls 13.6% are for any particular trait. The bell curve shows what 13.6% each standard deviation represents. 0.1% 2.1% One standard deviation (10 units) away from the 2.1% 0.1% 70 mean in either direction (the purple area) accounts 80 90 100 110 120 130 for about 68 % of the bulls.

The power of breeding for NTM The NTM vs yield and longevity graph shows that if you use NTM for selection you will improve in all traits. Selection on yield only, you will not make gains in all traits eg udder health and daughter fertility. Selection for longevity only will decrease gains in yield, stature and body.

How to read VikingGenetics breeding values 1 NTM The Nordic Total Merit is a tool designed to help the farmer to select sires that give maximum profit. It is a composite breeding value taking into account the correlation between traits as well as the economic impact of each trait. More than 50 breeding values are combined in 12 main traits. Each trait is given an economic weight related to actual cost or income.

2 Production Production Index: Based on amount of protein, fat and milk. There is a slight negative weighting applied to the milk quantity, in order to maintain concentration. Growth Rate: Based on data from slaughtered male progeny. Includes growth and carcass classification. This also correlates to heifer growth, as dairy farmers observe that the sires with higher than average growth rates have the better growing calves.

3 Health Daughter fertility: Fertility data from heifers, first, second and third calvers. Includes number of inseminations, interval from calving to 1st insemination, interval between first and last insemination, Non Return Rate. Calvings, sire: Based on calving difficulties and number of stillborn calves from first calvers and later lactations of the sire. Calvings, maternal: Expresses the ability of the bulls’ daughters to give birth to a living calf at their first calving. Udder health: Based on mastitis diagnosis, compulsory reported by vets and from the milk recording scheme, cell-count data and reported cullings due to mastitis. In addition conformation traits like udder depth is used to further increase the accuracy of the index. Other diseases: Based on diseases other than mastitis, compulsory reported by vets and culling reports from the milk recording scheme. The diseases are divided in to four different subindexes – early and late fertility disorder, feet and leg problems and metabolic diseases – these four subindexes are then weight together to the complete index for Other diseases. Longevity: Based on the proportion of daughters calving a fourth time. Hoof health: Based on lesion scoring reported by hoof trimmers. Includes both infectious and laminitis related lesions with highest weight put on sole ulcer. Deviation: One standard deviation is 10 index units for all the traits. Eg a breeding value of 110 is one standard deviation above average.

Udder: A comprehensive evaluation of the udder. Temperament: Based on farmers observations and robotic data. Milking Speed: Based on farmers observations and robotic data.

Semen fertility This is a Scandinavian ranking. Each sire has a semen fertility score. In the Viking population they rate a bull with a non return rate by day 56 after first service. It is very simple as it is expressed by the percentage (%) in calf at day 56. If a sire is at 50% he is under observation, if a bull is below 45%, semen use will stop. 65%

TeAT THICKneSS. For Holsteins, Viking Reds and Jerseys the teat thickness is average 2.3 cm in diameter. A -10 (90) sire would make the measurement for that trait to 2.2 cm. 9

Balanced Breeding The most profitable cow for all breeds is your medium sized cow. Selecting sires that leave traits to the left and right of 100 is essential for a balanced programme to avoid extremes. Almost 70% of the female population is in the green zone between 90-110. Changes within this zone are very minimal either way. One standard deviation is 10 points, so this sire is basically keeping the population constant apart from strengthening fore udder which is above average. This is a very good sire to maintain your medium sized cow with good functional type.

Why doesn’t VikingGenetics breed for extreme body type? What is good conformation? The conformation of the animal is very important for VikingGenetics in their breeding goal. We have a lot of focus on the udders and feet & legs, because that is important for the cow to work in an optimal way. When it comes to the body type of the animal VikingGenetics is breeding for the balanced cow. Not to extreme in either direction. A good example of thatconformation is the breeding goal for example Body depth. Balanced See graph below. Example: Body depth Cow registrations

The registration from the classifier on Body depth (scale 1-9) shows that most of the animals are scored from 5-7. At the same time the culling rate shows that there is greater risk of being culled if the animals are either to narrow or to deep. That is why the breeding goal is 6 which is moderate for Body depth and the optimum for longevity. This is just one example, but it is the same trend for other traits like stature, chest width etc. That’s why you will find the optimum for Viking’s sires for body traits is 100 allowing you to maintain consistent type generation after generation.

Strength of the animal When VikingGenetics talks about the strength of the animal, we are not specifically talking about the body and type of the animal. A strong cow is a cow without any problems. Strong feet & legs, a well attached udder combined with super fertility and a good health profile makes for a trouble free cow. A cow with a strong health profile equals cows with strong conformation. A weak cow is usually an unhealthy cow.

Sexed semen success with Viking Sires ”More heifers on the ground is our goal and using our new sexed semen implantation method we have achieved great results in the recent year”. ”We will continue to use Viking Genetics sexed semen in our heifer programs this year as it is a high quality product that has proven to provide consistent results for the farmers we are working with”.

Brad Pickford Breed ’n Betsy, Australia

• 90% female guarantee

• Many heifers to sell

or replace cows and increase your herd

• Excellent fertility results • Easy calvings • Higher profit

”I was looking for a bull with great heifer traits, fertility, low mastitis rates, workability and cows that would last in the herd. Having previously only achieved an average of 30% I am very happy with the conception rates in 2012 of 65% using VikingHolstein sire D Sol”.

Andrew McCrae, Portland, Australia ”We wanted to increase herd size so we needed to minimize bull calves and therefore we started with X-Vik. With X-Vik we get easier calvings, increased genetic gain and will have a surplus of heifers. This also enables us to cull harder on the tail of the herd,”

Hanne Grethe and Vagn Petersen, Denmark ”We dont want to buy animals due to risk of diseases, and therefore we need as many heifers as possible. To increase herd size from 650 to 1,000 cows, we use X-Vik semen.”

Morten Wenzel, Denmark

Aust

HeRD FeRTILITY Due to an obvious decline in herd health, especially noticeable in our herd of predominately Holsteins cows, both fertility issues and longevity needed to be addressed without sacrificing good functional type and production. This is not a problem unique to the Bega Valley or even Australia. It is a major problem worldwide! Viking ticks all the boxes in my book and after travelling to Denmark and Sweden on one of their daughter tours I am convinced they have much to offer our industry and our cattle.”

Matt Kimber, Bega NSW (shown in photo)

THeY LooK GReAT Glen Kelly of “Rayglen Holsteins”, Strathmerthon, VIC says the health traits of the Viking Holsteins got my attention and I used some of the early sires VIKTorlan and VIK Stame as my herd fertility was becoming a real concern, I now have a line of Torlan daughters and some Stame- they are great! They are all back in calf early after calving and have great herd temperament with a great desire to “get into the shed and be milked”. I really like my Viking Holsteins and will be using much more in the future and they look great as well.”

ralian results with Viking Genetics

” ” ” ” ” eASY BoRn CALVeS

Jeff Jamison “Gownavale”, Red Bluff, VIC has used Viking D Sol and Rakuuna with aim of having smaller calves with good growth rates. Of course the strong health traits of these two sires appeals to Jeff also. Rakuuna was fantastic on the herd of 120 cows with only one assisted birth. 30 maiden heifers calved to D Sol conventional semen with minimal problems, the result being two assisted births, one being breech. Jeff is going with D Sol for the herd this year and D Odder for the maiden heifers.”

VIGoRoUS CALVeS

PReDoMInAnTLY BLACK WITH GReAT GRoWTH

Kyle Lochhead is part of a family managed dairy farm “Roundhill” at Gundowring,Vic. Kyle said they joined 120 heifers to D Sol last year and the calving ease was great, easily born calves with great growth rates and he is looking forward to them coming into the dairy. Most of his D Sol calves are predominantly black which is another bonus. D Sol is being used heavily again this year along with some Danish Jersey, DJ Lirsk.”

I have seen it firsthand that Viking sires with high growth rate figures transmit the high growth to their calves. Well doing, healthy vigorous calves that are a pleasure to rear.” Matt Kimber, Bega, NSW.

SIMPLe ReALLY!

We breed cows that can make a lot of milksolids, with all the health traits that we need. Cows that are bred to last and can do the job with a minimunof fuss. No point bringing in heifers that are hard to get back in calf. Very simply put, you will not end up with a cow that’s fertile, high producing, with good feet and a low cell count unless you breed for it and feed for it. Simple really!” Erwin Van Den Berg, Katamatite, VIC

PRoDUCTIon, HeALTH, LonGeVITY I am after high producing; healthy, long lasting cows and I believe Viking sires are very strong in all these areas! Since travelling to Denmark and seeing their cattle and methods of proving bulls I have now solely used Viking bulls as our proven team for the past two years.” Matt Kimber, Bega, NSW.

27

ReMARKABLe IMPRoVeMenT! Since introducing Viking Red genetics into our herd 8 years ago, we have seen a remarkable improvement in our cow fertility, cell counts, longevity and calving ease, all without any production loss. Cows are easy going, and tend to hold their body condition throughout their lactation. Calves are easily reared, and have a willingness to survive. Since we have made the decision to use Red genetics, and have seen the results they have produced in our herd,we would not consider using anything else for our 1st. cross.”

Tom and Paul Riches. The Sisters, Victoria.

THe MoST PRoFITABLe CoWS AS A ReSULT oF VIKInG GeneTICS 28 years ago, we began using VikingRed genetics to improve the milk and protein production in our herd. We never realised the extensive health benefits the Viking Red also offered us, as their bulls are proven in one of the world’s most thorough and centralised data collection systems. We couldn’t be happier with our Aussie Reds, with up to 8 generations of VikingRed, they are highly productive, healthy, and ultimately, the most profitable cow we could breed.” Sam Graham, Nowra, NSW

Crossbreeding with VikingRed is increasing all over the world The unique qualities of the VikingRed makes it the obvious choice for the commercial dairy herd of today, demanding efficient cows that can take care of themselves. When you crossbreed you utilize the benefits from hybrid vigor. Often the traits you like to improve are longevity, fertility and health. Crossbreeding with VikingRed is a perfect choice as the breed has its strength in these areas, due to selection for health and fertility for more than forty years in the Scandinavian countries. Around

ew th

44

orld

The strongest red breeding program in the world VikingGenetics has the world’s strongest red breeding program – VikingRed. The three very impressive breeds – Finnish Ayrshire, Swedish Red and Danish Red – share the same selection program and breeding goal: the economic cow. For that reason we list them as one breed – VikingRed. The total number of VikingRed cows in milk recording in the three Nordic countries is 310,000 and VikingGenetics progeny tests more than 200 bulls annually. Selection is intensive and reliable thanks to genomic testing based on the largest red reference group in the world.

Rapid genetic progress Crossbreeding is designed to help you to achieve rapid genetic progress within your herd for fertility, health, cell count and longevity. All these key areas have an impact on the profitability of your dairy business. Crossbreeding gives you the highest probability of genetic gain through the effect of heterosis. Heterosis The effects of heterosis are the opposite of the effect of inbreeding depression. At each location of the pairs of chromosomes the two genes are much less likely to be identical with crossbreeding Parent average Heterosis than with same-breed matings. Therefore, ge- 40 netic recessives of both 35 30 major and minor conse25 quence are not expres- 20 sed. Research indicates 15 that heterosis is greatest 10 5 for traits related to 0 vitality, fertility, health Breed A Breed B X Breed and survival. Heterosis is not everything – the additive breed effects are important in crossbreeding as well as in all breeding. The heterosis will be an extra benefit on top of the parent average. So one critical point is to always use the best bulls from breeds that suit your conditions. A crossbreeding program needs to be well planned and organized to produce benefits. The breeds you select must be unrelated, competitive and have an efficient breed improvement program – and remember to use the best bulls for the best results.

Why three breeds? Capturing and sustaining heterosis is a key part to an efficient cross breeding program. Once you are used to the extra bonus of heterosis you do not want it to drop below 75 %. A three-breed rotation is the optimum and results in an average Holstein heterosis of 86 %. RED Three-Breed Rotational Mating System

The Golden Choice

Profitable breeding with VikingJersey

The VikingJersey population was established in Sweden (1890) and Denmark (1896). Up till 1909 a total of 5212 animals were imported from Jersey Island. Importation of animals stopped and slowly the population grew up to todays 71.000 pure bred and milk recorded cows.

World Champions in butter fat production Due to the high butter export from Denmark, Jerseys became very popular and the breeding goal was butterfat up to the early 1980’s, when protein payment was introduced. The Danish Jerseys were World Champions in butter fat production. 300 kg butterfat per cow (and 6,30%) per year in 1983! The Danish National Protein Line Project was introduced (1991), to breed bulls superior for protein production. This project led to a National Breeding program in 1999 and to Viking Jerseys in 2008. The average herd size today is 170 cows. Highest average for all breeds in Viking countries. Jerseys make up 13% of all cows in Denmark. Due to efficiency (more profit per hectare and per livestock unit), longevity, fertility and less health problems, Jerseys has experienced great progress over the last years. Semen export started in 1954 (to South Africa) and is now nearly twice as big as the Domestic use. Most national Jersey herds in mainland Europe are founded on Danish Jerseys.

62 per cent Danish genes Semen imports have been very important for the development of the Viking Jersey. First it was semen from Jersey Island and especially New Zealand, during the sixties and seventies, followed by semen from USA and Canada, especially from 1985 to 1995, to speed up protein production. The most influential bulls have been Glenmore Royal Guide 46

(NZ), Highland Duncan Lester (US) and Meadow Lawn J Imperial (CAN). These bulls have resulted in sons, grandsons and great grandsons like FYN Tved, FYN Haug, SKAE Hede, FYN Lemvig, Q Impuls, Q Zik and DJ Zuma. Today 62 per cent of the genes are Danish and 38 per cent foreign (US) in the Viking Jersey population.

Sexed semen VikingJersey introduced sexed semen in 2004 and genomic selection in 2009. All bulls entering the National breeding program are tested. 1/3 of the bulls selected have unproven genomic selected sires. The increase in demand and use of genomic selected bulls is close to 50% of all. The big influence world wide started with FYN Lemvig (Lester x SKAE Hede). He was the sire of a number of great bulls, with Manhatten (NZ) and Sunset Canyon Maximum (US) being the most influencive. Lemvig daughters were bull mothers all over. The same happened for Q Impuls (SKAE Ide x JAS Byg). The bull him self is still ranked #1 in Canada and he was ranked in US top 5, from 2007 to 2011. Q Impuls still ranks #22 in USA, with 26.000 daughters and now 5 sons ranked in top 20. From the new generation of bulls, DJ Zuma (Q Zik x FYN Lemvig) has been very heavily used in Europe, USA and South Africa. Now daughters has started to milk, and all are very excited. DJ Zuma has also been used as sire of sons world wide. No sons have conventional proofs yet, but genomic results show that some of the sons are among the worlds best genomic bulls right now. VikingGenetics are excited about the new international Elite sire VJ Lure. He is a DJ Lirsk (FYN Lemvig) out of a Q Impuls. Top genetics with VikingGenetics profile and outcross to most other genetics world wide.
