YOUR GUIDE TO LISBON, PORTUGAL
STATISTICALLY, PORTUGAL’S HILLY COASTAL CAPITAL gets the most sun of any European destination. Charming cobblestone alleyways, ancient ruins, glossy tiled facades and white-domed cathedrals make the city positively pictureperfect — and its vibrant food scene is equally as alluring. Think velvety custard tarts and an endless supply of fresh seafood.
TOP THINGS TO SEE & DO
BELÉM TOWER: A 16th-century limestone fortification that served as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers and as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. It was built during the height of the Portuguese Renaissance and is a UNESCO site.
THE NATIONAL AZULEJO MUSEUM: Housed in the Madre de Deus Convent, it showcases an incredible array of decorative ceramic tiles, or azulejos, along with displays about the history of the art form. The intricate tiles illustrate everyday life and important events in Portugal’s history.
RIDE TRAM 28: The iconic, yellow vintage tram that crosses through the centre of Lisbon, passing by many of the city’s main attractions, making it the perfect sightseeing tour.
EAT AT THE TIME OUT MARKET: A fabulous food hall boasting 35 kiosks selling regional specialities — Azeitão sheep’s cheese, Alentejo ham, custard tarts, sardines, wines and chocolates. Five top chefs have restaurants here.
SÃO JORGE CASTLE: Since the 12th century, it has variously served as a royal palace, military barracks and home of the Torre do Tombo National Archive. It is now a beautiful national monument and museum.
