Introducing the L AST CONTINENT It is a profound experience to set eyes upon Antarctica for the first time. Breathtaking vistas, otherworldly wildlife and the journey itself leave an indelible mark on visitors. Here is a land of paradoxes: the world’s biggest desert that is also the world’s largest ice sheet, nearly three kilometres thick. Virtually unexplored just 150 years ago, this continent belongs to no nation, and is protected by an international treaty for peaceful scientific pursuit. Our Antarctic Explorer itinerary takes you to the heart of the Antarctic peninsula. Each day brings new surprises, and plans may change to maximise wildlife sightings as we adapt to ever-changing weather.

VIKING CRUISES
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS
CAITYLN O'DOWD Program Director, River Cruises
1. What attracted you to Viking and how long have you been working with us? I started working for Viking back in 2014. I had been working as a tour director around Europe and was growing tired of living out of a suitcase — every day we would pack and unpack in different hotels! I was living in the Netherlands and noticed the river cruise ships would pass close to my house regularly — I thought, hang on! Maybe I could work on one of those! A month later, I stepped on board my first ship, Viking Baldur. 2. What does your job entail? I’m a Program Director on one of our longships. That means I oversee and deliver the cruise’s itinerary. On any given day you can wear a number of hats — one moment you’re making vikingcruises.com.au
announcements on the ship’s PA system, the next you’re briefing guides and bus drivers for the morning’s shore excursions, then you’re delivering a lecture on the life of Mozart, and after that you’re helping a guest track down a long-lost friend they’d like to meet in a few days in Bamberg. There’s never a dull moment! 3. What is your top tip for cruisers to maximise their holiday? If your schedule allows it, fly in a few days before your cruise and take advantage of Viking’s pre- and post-cruise extension tours. Those extra days allow you to get over the jetlag, see your pre-extension city at a leisurely pace and then board your ship via an organised transfer once you’ve already acclimatised to your new surroundings. When I greet our new guests on embarkation day, I can spot those who flew in earlier from a mile away — they look so relaxed and refreshed already! 19

A JOUR NEY THROUGH CENTR AL EUROPE
Trevor Cochrane will take Explore TV to the rivers of Central Europe for four brand new episodes in 2020, exploring Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands on a Viking Longship. Our 15-day Grand European Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam is the quintessential European river cruise, sailing through picturesque 26
countryside where riverbanks are lined with castles and vineyards at every turn, and each day brings a new cobblestoned village or historic city to discover. Read on to discover where each episode will take you, and don’t miss all four episodes on Sunday afternoons at 4:30pm on Channel Nine, commencing 9 February 2020. VIKING CRUISES
1 | FEBRUARY 9: HUNGARY
3 | FEBRUARY 23: GERMANY
2 | FEBRUARY 16: AUSTRIA
4 | MARCH 1: GERMANY & THE NETHERLANDS
Trevor discovers the highlights of Budapest, such as the delightful streets of Szentendre, a colourful village of artists and galleries, and Skanzen, the famous open-air museum. Following a relaxing soak in Hungary’s famous thermal baths — a centuries-old tradition — Trevor joins his Viking Longship and learns what makes a river cruise with Viking a voyage for "the thinking person".
Sailing through some of Austria’s most picturesque landscapes and the region’s incredible lock system, Trevor immerses himself in Vienna with a Mozart and Strauss Concert and a tour of the magnificent home of the Hapsburg dynasty, Schonbrunn Palace, before arriving at Melk Abbey — a masterpiece of baroque brilliance.
Trevor discovers that many German riverside cities are best explored on foot, like the Italianate streets of Passau, the medieval city of Regensburg and the Old World Franconian city of Bamberg. A visit to Rothenburg, the country’s last walled city, is not to be missed, while Nuremberg provides a glimpse of the dramatic stage on which the Third Reich rose and fell.
Trevor explores the only castle in the Rhine Valley to have never been destroyed — Marksburg Castle — as well as the stunning ruins of Wertheim Castle. A visit to a Cologne beer house provides Trevor with the chance to get to know Germany’s other specialties — local cuisine and Kolsch, sampled straight from the barrel. And in the Netherlands, he explores historic windmills and the Golden Age of Amsterdam, when the Dutch ruled the waves.

VIKING CRUISES
EUROPE INSIGHTS FROM A TR AVEL GURU Trevor Cochrane, host of Explore TV, takes some time away from filming to chat about his very first river cruise, sailing from Budapest to Amsterdam with on our Grand European Cruise. Q: What led you to create the very first cruise series? As more and more of our viewers asked about cruises, I wanted to understand what the difference was between ship lines and the experiences they offered their guests. More importantly, what the difference was between the superliners with thousands of guests and the experience of cruising on smaller ships. So I took a Viking cruise from Beijing to Hong Kong via Shanghai. I remember waking up in the middle of Shanghai with the city shrouded in fog and realising one of the greatest benefits small ships had was the central city access. Since then, we’ve documented three small ship cruises with Viking — now including my first river cruise. Q: You recently sailed the Grand European Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. Tell us about your first river cruising experience? It’s hard to explain how special this was. In particular, it was my first visit to Hungary and it did not disappoint. Budapest is simply sublime, with rich culture, fascinating history, spectacular architecture and delicious food. And then once we hopped on board, the crew and I were equally as impressed with Viking’s beautifully appointed ships, our base to explore Europe in comfort, the hotel that travels with you. vikingcruises.com.au
29
Q: What were the highlights for you? On board it has to be the food. The freshness, the fact that the chefs are delivering cuisine from the regions you’re visiting and that they actually use herbs which are grown on the Longships’ own gardens on the sundeck had me very impressed. The destinations I loved the most? It’s hard not to fall in love with the beauty of the big cities: Budapest, Austria’s romantic capital Vienna, Cologne in Germany is a favourite and finishing up in the cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam was wonderful, but I can’t help but feel attached to many of the smaller towns we visited along the way, like Regensburg, a Bavarian city on the Danube River in southeast Germany, considered one of the best examples of medieval architecture and untouched by the ravages of WW2. Q: Any destinations that surprised you? I reckon I can claim to be a seasoned traveller, but cruising along the waterways of Europe allows you a really intimate insight. I was surprised by the range of experiences you can have, and the variety of excursions. I found myself talking with guests at the end of each day, they had all done things quite diverse that left them enriched with knowledge of the places they visited, whether ancient or modern history. Being able to learn more about the destinations and see the evolution of architecture over 2000 years was incredible. The beauty of travelling this way is that you take a journey through time. Q: Food is such an important part of the travel journey these days — any experiences that stood out for you? Food glorious food… When you stop in towns you have the flexibility to try the local fare, like authentic Hungarian Goulash 30
VIKING CRUISES
in Budapest or Austrian Wiener Schnitzel, that incredible breaded veal fillet fried with a squeeze of lemon on top and a stein of beer to wash it down. An all-time favourite I have never been able to find outside of Austria. And back on board, the ship provided menus that reflected the different locations we visited. Q: Which excursions would you recommend? There’s an excursion for every taste. Viking offer guests an included excursion in every port visited and many of them are familiarisations of the town you’re visiting, which means you can explore under your own steam afterwards — a freedom I really enjoyed. When it comes to optional excursions, I loved the performance in Vienna that showcased the genius of Mozart and Strauss, together with the Vienna Residence Orchestra. It was a great chance to dress up and soak up the romance of Strauss’s waltzes and Mozart’s brilliance. Q: And on board, what did you think of your Longship? These ships are super comfortable. Viking are very humble and don't like to call them luxury but the staterooms are large, spacious and the beds probably the most comfortable I’ve slept in anywhere away from my own. My favourite place was the Aquavit Terrace, where I had breakfast almost every day on board. It’s relaxed, informal and provides the most spectacular views. Q: And finally, what’s your top tip for anyone considering booking the Grand European Cruise? Before you leave, study the excursion options and book ahead. It sounds simple but have a good read through the options, there’s a lot to experience and you want to make sure you choose the best option for you. vikingcruises.com.au

HOW TO MAKE YOUR NORTHERN LIGHTS PHOTOS SHINE For those lucky enough to witness the ethereal Aurora Borealis dancing in the sky above Norway while on board our In Search of the Northern Lights cruise, capturing the dazzling light display in a snapshot is a must. To help, here are ten tips from one of Viking’s resident photographers, Alastair Miller. 1. Bring a DSLR camera with a manual mode. A full-frame camera with a sensor size of at least 35mm and a high ISO capability is ideal, as is a wide-angle lens. 2. Any slight camera shake can ruin your photos, so a tripod is key. A remote shutter release will also help. 3. Batteries die faster in cold temperatures, so keep some fully charged spares in your pocket. 4. Switch to a manual setting for optimal control. Set your focus to infinity, avoid zooming and choose Automatic White Balance (AWB). 5. The lens aperture or “f-stop” should be opened as wide as possible to let in the maximum amount of light — f/2.8 or wider is good. 6. Start with an ISO setting of 400 to 800 and take a practice shot. If it is not bright enough, increase to 1200 or higher. 42
VIKING CRUISES
7. If the lights are moving quickly, try fi ve- to seven-second exposures. If they are moving slowly, try 10- to 25-second exposures. 8. If you want to enhance your images in post-production, enable the RAW setting on your camera for higher quality photos. 9. For those photographing on a smartphone, apps such as Northern Lights Photo Taker, Night Camera and ProCamera can improve the phone’s camera functions. 10. Photos of the Aurora Borealis always look better when there is some visual foreground interest — think water, a snowy mountain or a tree — anything that gives a sense of proportion to the photo. vikingcruises.com.au

R ETR ACE THE HISTORY OF THE VIKINGS The Vikings were seafaring warriors from Norway, Sweden and Denmark who left their homelands to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Their raids and subsequent settlements between 793 and 1066 AD significantly impacted the cultures of Europe and even parts of the Middle East. Most Vikings returned to Scandinavia at the end of each season with treasure, slaves, food and other goods to sustain them throughout the harsh winter. They were also known for their innovative vessels — most notably their lightning fast longships.
