Symptomatic uterine fibroids affect approximately one out of four women in the United States with three out of four women being unaware that they have them because they show no signs nor have any symptoms. Many of these fibroids are found by a doctor or gynecologist during a routine pap and pelvic exam, with no complaints of symptoms by the patient. If fibroids are non-symptomatic and cause the patient no problems, no further treatment may be needed. However, if the patient is experiencing discomfort or troublesome symptoms, there are several different treatments than can be pursued for uterine fibroids. First, let's look at the possible symptoms of uterine fibroids. - Longer than usual menstrual periods or bleeding between periods. - Heavier than usual menstrual periods - Pelvic pain or pressure - Inability to control urination or frequent urination - Constipation - Leg pains or backache If any or all of these symptoms are present, women should see their doctor and have a pelvic exam or ultrasound for diagnosis. Even though these uterine fibroids are not related to an increased risk of uterine cancer, they may cause pain and troublesome symptoms. Detecting them early on can decrease this chance and there is medical therapy and surgical procedures that can be performed to rid a woman of these fibroids before symptoms show up or get worse. If symptoms already persist, there are several options for treatment. Oral contraceptives may help decrease the size of the fibroids, along with other medications that affect the hypothalmus in the brain or the ovaries and adrenal glands. More aggressive forms of treatment include myomectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove the uterine fibroids. The risk with this procedure is that the fibroids may return. The most radical treatment would hysterectomy, which is a complete removal of the uterus. This is the most permanent solution, but one that most women who still want to have children will not want to consider. Most women with uterine fibroids have no signs or symptoms and therefore the form of treatment recommended is mostly a wait and see method. Since they are not cancerous, seldom interfere with pregnancy and normally grow very slowly and shrink when nearer to menopause, a doctor will usually suggest to simply keep an eye on them. Every case is different and no two women will have the same growth pattern, size and location of fibroids, so choice of treatment will be unique with every patient. As mentioned earlier, there are many forms of treatment, all of which should be explored before choosing which path to take. Much needed information on uterine fibroids.
