WANT A FIT BODY? START WITH A HEALTHY MINDSET
by Julia Sontag, CSCS
Fitness is so much more than just physical. Our mindset, attitude, and perspective all play an integral role in helping achieve our fitness goals. Read below for tips on having a healthy mindset while on your fitness journey.
• Exercise should be fun, beneficial, and enjoyable! If you hate running on the treadmill, try walking up an incline instead.
If you get bored sitting on the bike, try the elliptical. If squats bother your knees, try the leg press (or better yet, make an appointment with a personal trainer to help with form and modifications). There are hundreds of exercise options out there. Be creative, listen to your body, and have fun!
• There is no magic exercise, magic number of reps, magic number of sets, etc. Elevating your current level of fitness is all about consistency! Working out intensely for a few days and then not returning to the gym for several weeks won’t bring any type of result you are looking for. You have to make fitness a part of your overall healthy lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be an intense, all-or-nothing program. Try to break a sweat 3-5 days a week, and give yourself grace if that doesn’t happen every single week. You’re a human being and you’re doing your best.
• Motivation is a myth. If you wait to be motivated to go to the gym, it might never happen. Your body and mind (ego) want to keep you safe, comfortable, and at homeostasis. Working out is hard, and our survival instincts don’t want us to do hard things. Sometimes the most challenging part is simply getting to the gym.
Before you talk yourself out of exercising, simply put your shoes on and get in your car. It is best to focus on tiny steps when trying to accomplish a goal rather than getting overwhelmed with the end result.
• Don’t view exercise as something you HAVE to do, but as something you GET to do. Working out shouldn’t be punishment for something you ate yesterday. It should be a celebration of your body‘s abilities! Exercise endorphins are real, and staying active has amazing effects on your mood, confidence, and resiliency. You deserve to feel good and to have a healthy mind, body, and soul. You are WORTH it!
