ANZA – Heavenly Horse Haven, a nonprofit horse rescue, received a $5,000 ASPCA’ ASPCA Equine Fund which provides grants to U.S. nonprofit equine welfare organizations and other animal welfare

organizations that care for horses, mules, donkeys and ponies. The grant is awarded to equine organizations such as Heavenly Horse Haven that strive to achieve the best practices both in nonprofit manage-

Spring is here, and you could tell from the energy in the room at the Thimble Club’s March 2 meeting that everyone is happy to see the sunshine. We love our meeting room at the Valley Gospel Chapel, from which we have a wonderful view of the beautiful Anza mountains. Following the invocation by Myrna Hawthorn and Pledge of Allegiance led by Marie Ghysels, we enjoyed a typical St. Patrick’s Day lunch of corned beef and cabbage, with potatoes and carrots as a side. Dessert was heavenly frosted mint brownies made from scratch by our incredible Sally Kaspar. The cooks, Annie Ashby, Linda Barnes, Pat Cheney and Sally Kaspar, were thanked for all their hard work preparing the meal. The main focus of the business meeting was planning the Open House, held Saturday, April 8, from

Blue Diamond Horseshoe, LLC, raises up race champions on Anza farm Diane Seiker ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM

Have you ever wondered what the ranch off Jojoba Road and Hwy. 371 is all about? There are manyhorses and foals and it is one busy place! Well, wonder no more. The ranch is called Blue Diamond Horseshoe, LLC, owned by Mike and Debbie Tippett. “We breed, foal, train, race and sell very high quality thoroughbred race horses. We breed to outside mares as well as our own,” Farm Manager Reneé Beckwith explained. Beckwith’s responsibilities as manager demand a huge range of skills. She handles breeding and boarding contracts, invoicing, talking to clients, communicating with the owners, keeping tabs on the pregnant mares via cameras, making sure the mares and fouls are

rate. In today’s racing world, they have some of the most sought after bloodlines available. The animals get the best of everything. The stallions that Blue Diamond Horseshoe, LLC owns are from impressive pedigrees. The bloodlines

and the amount of money they have won and their parents and grandparents have won is what makes them special, as well as what their offspring accomplish. For example, Beckwith clarified some of the foaling procedures. “There is a protocol we go through for every mare and foal. We have a form we complete that has everything marked with its completion and time of completion. Time of birth, date, sex, color, time it stood, time we gave the enema, time it nurses, time the placenta passes, did it stand on its own, did it nurse on its own, how many days did the mare carry the foal, was the birth normal or did it have complications.” There are 29 pampered foals expected in 2017.

Kim Harris ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM A spectacular bloom of wildflowers is underway at Anza Bor-

rego Desert State Park and by the middle of March, it’s expected to just get better and better, according to park officials. As of March 3, over 7 inches of

rain has fallen this season and the Borrego Desert is full of green with flowers in stages of both bud and blooms, a press release issued by the park is reporting. “We are on the ‘uphill side’ of the peak bloom and experiencing more open flowers with each passing sunny day,” the release states. According to park officials, there are many locations where open flowers can be seen, especially for those willing to wander among the buds and blooms throughout the park. “A top location is anywhere within a two-mile stretch of the Coyote Canyon Jeep Road, north of the north end of DiGiorgio Road with abundant Peirson’s Primoses and others, including a few remarkable Desert Lilies,” the park reported. Patches of pink sand, verbena, dune evening primroses with wide white petals, yellow desert sunflowers and desert lilies can all be found throughout the Henderson Canyon Road area. “Around Borrego Springs, roadsides are lined with yellow Desert Dandelions and other wildflowers. These flowers are best seen in the morning, as some blossoms close in the afternoon,” the release states. The popular annual Borrego Desert Garden Tour featuring seven private gardens and several of the homes open for viewing and scheduled for Saturday, March 18 are now on sale and can be purchased at the Anza Borrego Desert National History Association Nature Center or online are www.abdnha.org/gardentour. Early bird pricing is in effect through March 11. “While at the ABDNHA Nature Center, be sure to visit our Borrego training program. Finster, who has provided many volunteer hours over the years at HHH, is a real asset to the program, said Perrin. HHH from page A-1 and ready for a new forever home and competent horsemen and women. For HHH, the grant has been used in a targeted concentrated training program involving 13 rescued horses of varying ages, abilities and backgrounds. Some will make great riding horses, a few are young and are just starting to be ground trained. Some will be suited as companion horses and some will be suited for therapy horses. During the training, or retraining process, a HHH rescue horse is evaluated for what kind of training they need and is noted for what type of riding genre they may be suited for as well including, trail riding, gymkhana, arena work, dressage, therapy, etc. Horses that cannot be a reliable riding horse due to injury or other issues and are still social and enjoy human companionship, can be trained to become companion horses. They must still learn the basics of being haltered and to lead quietly. They must learn to

be tied and how to stand still to be groomed and to cooperate with a farrier. Companion horses that pass these tests may also be deemed therapy horse candidates. Of the 13 rescued horses in the program, five have already been adopted. Perrin has watched numerous volunteers whose lives have been deeply touched by the bond built while they cared for and worked with HHH’s rescued horses over the years. It was not too far of a step when planning last year’s “Help a Horse Day” at the ranch that HHH would team up with Miracle Ranch, a local ranch offering equine assisted psychotherapy to help bring healing to the hearts and minds of men, women and children. Today their relationship has grown and Miracle Ranch’s cliental participate regularly in programs held at HHH. The grant has also provided funds so that USDF Bronze & Silver Medalist, Denise Nelson-Finster of DAAN Sporthorses in Anza could be hired to train both horses and volunteers in this concentrated

Pool safety is key in drowning prevention Diane Seiker ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM

Courtesy image

Editor’s note; following the tragic death of 2-year-old drowning victim Zayden Wilson, Anza Valley Outlook felt it was important to remind readers how they can help to protect the ones they love from an accidental drowning. The following tips are courtesy of a variety of sources including the Center for Disease Control and Life Saver Pool Fence. If you own a pool or know of someone who does, please consider installing a fence around the pool. – Kim Harris, Managing Editor. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “about one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger.” Statistics show that an average of 10 people a day are victims of drowning and it is the fifth leading cause of unintentional death in the country. Children between the ages of one and four are most at risk. According to the CDC, children in this age group is most likely to drown in home swimming pools. Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children these ages than any other cause except birth defects and fatal automobile accidents. What can be done to help protect the little ones? There are many ways to improve child safety around pools. Barriers are recommended and required by law in many states. An innovative company called Life Saver Pool Fence takes this to the next level. Their product is highly effective and designed with toddlers in mind. It consists of a seethrough, removable, lockable and self-latching mesh fencing made of the highest-grade materials. Their webpage advises: “Drowning happens quickly and without warning. There is no cry for help. Seventy-seven percent of the children who drowned had been seen five minutes or less before being missed and subsequently discovered in the pool.” Supervision is paramount. But Life Saver Pool Fence takes it a step further. They suggest “layers” of protection, beginning with keeping an eye on the child. Access doors and gates must have high, out-of-reach locks, adding another “layer” of safety. Then alarms installed on these access points, pool alarms and even personal immersion alarms on the toddlers can also help. Water survival training for the child and CPR and rescue training for the adults and older children is also highly recommended. The CDC adds that floating pool toys (“water wings,” “noodles,” or inner-tubes) are not safety devices and should not be used as such. Life Saver Pool Fence’s website goes on to say, “Pool fencing is the

Pool fences should be at least 5 feet high in California and have a selfclosing, self-latching gate that opens away from the pool. IHS opens new youth regional treatment center in California HEMET – The Indian Health Service, in consultation with the 104 federally-recognized tribes of California, announced the grand opening of the Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center in Hemet. The new Youth Regional Treatment Center at 39990 Faure Road, Hemet, will provide culturally appropriate substance use disorder services to American Indian and Alaska Native youth ages 12-17. “Today, IHS is pleased to announce the first of two youth regional treatment centers that will serve American Indian and Alaska Native youth in California,” IHS acting Director Rear Adm. Chris Buchanan, who is a registered environmental health specialist with a master’s in public health. said. “Desert Sage demonstrates our commitment to our American Indian and Alaska Native youth and families by offering culturally-centered evidence-based, individualized behavioral health services.” Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center will treat approximately 100 tribal youth annually. The wellness center is the first federally-owned and operated health care facility in California to serve American Indians and Alaska Natives. Currently, most of California’s Native American youth who receive residential chemical dependency treatment are sent out of state to non-IHS or non-tribal facilities that do not always meet the unique cultural needs of Native American youth. The IHS is working toward the construction of a second youth regional treatment center in Davis, California. The estimated completion date for the Sacred Oaks Healing Center is early 2019. “The new YRTCs in California are an important step to helping thousands of Native American youth in California who need residential care, “ IHS California Area Director

Beverly Miller said. “They will be staffed by a team of mental health care professionals, medical providers and traditional healers who will work in concert to treat the whole person.” The youth regional treatment centers will provide comprehensive and holistic care, including mental health assessments, health care services, and individualized treatment plans; structured chemical dependency programs such as 12-step programs; individual, group, and family therapy; academic education; vocational and life-skills training and activities to meet the spiritual and cultural needs of Native American youth. The Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center in Hemet is approximately 35,300 square feet and includes three buildings with 32 beds and five family suites. It will employ 70 full-time employees. The center was designed for sustainability and is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified. Interior features include classrooms, computer lab, art room, a commercial kitchen, dining area, cultural space, exam rooms, employee offices, an indoor half-court gymnasium and a weight room. Exterior features include an outdoor basketball court and walking trails. It is one of 11 youth regional treatment centers across the U.S. funded by IHS. The California Area Indian Health Service provides the IHS healthcare delivery system to the state of California, the home of the largest population of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the country. The IHS, an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides a comprehensive health service delivery system for approximately 2.2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. School Smarts Academy helps parents to assist their children to succeed in school Tony Ault TAULT@REEDERMEDIA.COM

The first session of the School Smarts Academy March 1 brought 16 inquisitive parents to the Hamilton K-8 School in Anza to learn how to help their children better succeed in school. “Parent involvement is really the key ingredient for children to succeed in school,” Catalina Lopez said; Lopez is a parent teacher student association member and facilitator at Hamilton School. The academy that will be meeting at the school, 57550 Michelle Road, every Wednesday 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. except during spring break until graduation. “It is more like a collaboration at the meetings,” Lopez said. The first session dealt specifically with

how parental involvement in their children’s learning helps them become successful in life. The trained facilitators will lead seven interactive sessions that are two hours in length. The free course includes a professionally developed curriculum, presentations, group activities, discussion and hands-on art activities that reinforce key concepts during each session. The March 8 session dealt with “Preparing for a lifetime of learning,” where participants learned about how their child learns, how to create a home environment to allow their child to succeed and components of being “ready to learn. The March 15 session will help parents in “Understanding our education system.” The March 22 session is entitled “Understanding

your local school system,” and the March 29 session will discuss “Becoming an effective communicator.” The April 12 session is entitled “Taking action and celebrating leadership.” Graduation is April 19. Lopez said one of the parents at the first session said she works as a volunteer at the school, but still did not know just how the school district actually is operated and its goals. The School Smarts academy is being offered by the California State PTA in partnership with local PTAs, like the one in Anza, and the school districts. It is designed to help parents learn very tangible ways to help their children succeed in school. The materials used in the sessions are in multiple languages

Enslaving debt has soared to almost $20 trillion Harold Pease, Ph. D. SPECIAL TO ANZA VALLEY OUTLOOK

Within 40 days our national debt is likely to be $20 trillion; $4 trillion from eight years of former President George W. Bush and $10 trillion from eight years of former President Barack Obama – the two biggest spending presidents in U.S. history. Obama alone accumulated more debt than all previous presidents put together. So what is a trillion dollars? To begin with a trillion is the No. 1 followed by 12 zeros. A trillion dollars is a thousand billion and a billion is a thousand million. This number still means very little to my students who count their money in fives, tens and twenties. One mathematician gave us a more practical way to evaluate our outstanding debt. One trillion, onedollar bills stacked atop each other, not end to end but flat, would reach nearly 68,000 miles into space—a third of the way to the moon, according to CNN. If so, the debt incurred under Obama alone, $10 trillion, www.anzavalleyoutlook.com

would reach the moon and back and to the moon again. Moreover, if you like traveling atop this stack of ones, our total $20 trillion in debt would take you to the moon and back three times and almost to the moon again. Sen. Mitch McConnell gave another illustration just as awe striking. He calculated that if we spent a million dollars every day since Jesus was born we still would not have spent a trillion dollars – only three-fourths of a trillion dollars. Someone else equated our national debt to seconds and concluded that a million seconds is about 11 and one-half days and a billion seconds is about 32 years. A trillion seconds is about 32,000 years; thus 20 trillion seconds is 640,000 years, according to CNN. This calculation only makes my head spin; as my Ph. D. is not in math. I ask my students, “Who gets to go without so that this debt can be paid?” “Go without!!!?” they said. That thought is a concept foreign to this generation. They do not know, and neither do their parents and grandparents who laid it on their backs. When they are told that their share of the debt is $61,457 according to www.USDebtClock. org and is due immediately, they are

angry. Someone should have told them that government handouts are not free. The 13th Amendment ending slavery has been rescinded; they are America’s new slaves. Bondage was given them before their birth, or while they were in the womb, or before they were old enough to know what it meant to be sold into slavery. The past generation wanted nice costly programs for free and were willing to sell their children in order to have them. Communist China now owns an eighth of our debt, and the bills are due. What is worse the older generation is still anxious to incur even more debt on our defenseless children and grandchildren. Are we not the most debt-addicted, insensitive generation in U.S. history? The latest new theory to avoid fiscal responsibility and continue unlimited spending used by Bush in late 2009 and by Obama thereafter is referred to as Quantitative Easing. Crudely, it means printing more money out of thin air to cover our debt, but it is a far more sophisticated plan than it seems. For Bush, the money supply was greatly expanded by having the Federal Reserve purchase $600 billion in mortgage-backed

Foals arrive from January through May. This is after careful selection of both mother and father based on their lineage. The fouls are weaned at four months of age. Their basic training begins as they are taught to be haltered, lead, tie, stand for the farrier and the vet and other things that lay the groundwork for ease of more intense training later. They even get their growth plates xrayed before that training begins to ensure they are ready. Many of these thoroughbreds are destined for the race track. If they are ready, they are handled by expert trainers. It is even determined if they prefer to run on dirt, grass or synthetic surfaces and this helps place them at the best track for their talents. But what happens after their racing days are over? “We either find them a perfect home or we retire them to become a broodmare, a stallion or a pasture horse. We do to not slaughter our horses or send them to slaughter auctions. Some of our horses we sell as weanlings, yearlings, 2-year-olds and up. The horses here are treated like family, because they are our family members.” Beckwith continued, “They are loved and spoiled. They mean the

world to us and great care is taken to make their lives as perfect as it can be. They don’t all race. Just because we breed them to race doesn’t mean they all want to do that. If they don’t want to, we don’t make them. We find them something they want to do and they do that instead.” With thoroughbred racing getting criticism lately, mainly due to reports of “unethical” treatment of the animals, rumors and falsehoods abound. It is obvious that Blue Diamond Horseshoe, LLC goes the extra mile to ensure humane, kind and productive lives for their horses. Beckwith suggests you decide for yourself. “Ask questions. Be careful what you read on the internet. Not everything is true and not every farm is like they discuss. The best way is to visit farms, go to the race track, or friend people on Facebook that are into this sport.” It is obvious that Blue Diamond Horseshoe, LLC and Reneé Beckwith place a lot of importance on the animals they breed and care for. securities, according to a Financial Times article in November 2010 by Robin Harding. Obama purchased $600 billion in Treasury securities over a six-month period of time beginning in November 2010 in what has been called Quantitative Easing or QE2, to distinguish it from QE1, the Bush expansion of the money supply by an article by Annalyn Cesky on www.CNNmoney.com. Neither president really stimulated the economy long term or created jobs, but for a few months, like a drug high, things seemed to feel better. Other, less publicized, Quantitative Easements followed. The biggest problem with expanding the money supply is that it reduces the value of the money that you have in your pocket. Prices go up. My 1968 new Camaro cost me $ 2,700. Had I instead put the money under a mattress and tried to purchase a Camaro today, it would cost more than 10 times that much. In this instance money has lost 90 percent of its value. People living on fixed incomes are robbed as surely as if a thief had lifted their wallet or purse. They cannot return to their employer for a raise to compensate for the loss caused by their own government.

Still, with all the sophisticated “doublespeak,” as for example quantitative easement, it means that we will print whatever money we need to purchase whatever we wish. Neither political party is serious about stopping the debt and removing the bondage that we are imposing upon our children and grandchildren. In last fall’s presidential election, the Democrats proposed “free” college. President Donald Trump’s proposed trillion-dollar infrastructure program, shared with us in his first address to Congress, does not appear to suggest a change. Who cares if our debt of dollar bills stacked upon one another can go to the moon and back three times and almost to the moon again, so long as the government fills our stomachs and in the case of Obama buys our cell phones? You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 951-719-6518, or visit using the trustee’s sale number assigned to this sale (TS # 1078).
