Despite the threat of rain and snow, 22 equestrians turned out May 6, to show off their riding skills in the Lions arena kicking

off the start of the 2017 Anza Lions Gymkhana season. The weather at the beginning of the Gymkhana off Kirby Road in Anza was sunny and bright, but two hours later heavy cloud cover moved in and a chilly wind blew,

Typical Anza winds tossed jars of seeds and vendor tables onto the concrete patio like wads of paper, but the participants were not to be deterred. The “Hwy. 371 Business Expo & Job Fair” was moved indoors at Marketplace Cooperative, Inc. As organizers rushed to change their signage so visitors could locate the displaced Expo, the intimate venue sparked lively conversation between the businesses. Before long, the chatter was enhanced as visitors from as far away as Temecula and Big Bear asked enthusiastic questions of the Expo’s local experts. The Saturday, April 29, event began in the parking lot at Anza Valley Business Center at 56480 Hwy. 371, in Anza before moving into Suite 11.

‘Fowl’ weather did not deter bird fans attending the Anza Poultry Jubilee on Sat., May 6. The event was held at the Organic Feed Store in Anza. There were ducks, guinea keets (babies), ducklings, fresh eggs, hatching eggs, chicken pullets, chicks of dozens of different breeds and even a tiny Serama rooster that crowed happily all day. Local poultry breeders were in attendance, offering advice and tips to new bird owners. On and off sprinkles did not dampen the enthusiasm. The chicks and ducklings were a definite hit. EXPO from page A-1 Visitors could meet local businesses in the communities along Highway 371 from Highway 79 South to Highway 74. Many of the businesses in attendance offered products or services that could benefit residents. Some businesses also offered work opportunities. The Expo was a prelude to National Small Business Week April 30-May 6. “Most of our local businesses aren’t visible along Hwy. 371 and we were hoping the Expo would draw them out into the public eye for better exposure,” says Sandi Hughes, co-owner of Marketplace Cooperative, Inc. “I didn’t know we had a local cake decorator or a service dog trainer and dog rehab college.” The Expo is hosted by two newly formed business groups, the Hwy. 371 Business Association (for-profit)

and the 371 Nonprofit Network, each geared toward uniting local business owners in the communities along Hwy 371 for the purposes of interbusiness referrals, networking and troubleshooting common business challenges. For business owners wishing to participate, information and registration forms are online at www.marketplacecooperative. com. Marketplace Cooperative, Inc. (MCI) is a worker-owned cooperative focused on building the local economy through administrative, marketing and other business services. It is the founding company for the Hwy 371 Business Association (for-profit) and the 371 Nonprofit Network that will be turned over to its community participants once they are firmly established. Anza Local Anza Community Hall plans grand reopening party following completion of hall updates Diane Sieker SPECIAL TO ANZA VALLEY OUTLOOK

The Anza Community Hall Board of Directors held their monthly board meeting at the Community Hall in Anza Thursday, April 27. On the agenda were updates on the building renovations and grant, parking lot lighting, plans for a grand reopening event and construction details that still needed attention. With the grant funds already utilized, the Community Hall building received a fresh coat of paint. New tile flooring was installed throughout, the kitchen was completely upgraded and plans are being developed to create a handicap-accessible bathroom and improve building access for handicapped persons. A second grant has been applied for, seeking the funds necessary for the work required to bring the building into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Additional jobs to be done include installing kick plates for the kitchen doors, hanging stainless steel wire shelving for the kitchen and performing some minor drywall finishing and repair. The work done at the Hall has been of very nice quality. The replacement of lighting bulbs/fixtures for the parking lot were discussed. It was agreed that the main concerns are efficiency, good lighting and affordability. The Board began organizing a grand reopening party slated for June 17, 2017. This event will be free for Community Hall members and only $10 admission for non-members. Annual Community Hall memberships may be purchased for $20. The benefits of membership include discounts on propane, space fees at the swap meet and Hall usage fees when booking an event. This Grand Reopening Party is the first time the Board has added the benefit free admission to a major affair. Memberships can be purchased at

the swap meet on any Saturday or by contacting the Hall at (951) 428-0901. Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington has been invited to the grand reopening party and it is the Board’s understanding that he will attend. It will be a good chance for them to thank him for all his support in obtaining the existing grant funds and assisting the Board obtain the additional grant funds required for the balance of the ADA upgrades. The Community Hall Board has arranged to bring in some major talent for the party. Musician Tracy G will be performing. He was the lead guitarist with Ronnie James Dio for six years and did ttree world tours with the rock band Dio. His guitar skills are legendary. After his time with Dio, Tracy released three independent albums and recently joined forces with singer/ song-writer Michael Beatty in the formation of the Tracy G Group. Beatty has about a dozen albums of his own.

While the Tracy G Group is best known for playing metal music, when Tracy and Michael perform without the rest of the group they explore everything from Johnny Cash to Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles to Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn. They also play original songs they have written. It is fortunate that the residents of Anza will

have the opportunity to hear this level of talent at the intimate setting of the Community Hall. More details regarding the party will be released as they become available. For more information about the Community Hall or the Reopening Party, call (951) 428-0901.

+ Local Lore + The 90 pounder Mallard Fudd SPECIAL TO ANZA VALLEY OUTLOOK

Years ago I had the opportunity to work on a construction crew refurbishing some of the freeways in this great state. Part of what we did was to remove and replace the concrete under the freeway underpasses. Because of the ground movement here in California the concrete under the underpasses would buckle and break and have to be replaced. In order to remove said concrete, it first had to be broken into small pieces; the implement used for such procedure was the jackhammer. Now jackhammers come in various sizes, ranging as far as I know from what is called a 30 pounder, meaning that the jackhammer itself weighed 30 pounds, to a 60 pound and 90 pound. We used the 30 pounders for surfaces that were on an angle, as in the instance of concrete under the underpass. The trick was to place one of your legs upslope and the other down slope. You rested the jackhammer on the upslope leg and began busting up the concrete from the top of the slope on down. The trick was that when the hammer bit www.anzavalleyoutlook.com

went through the concrete it made a different sound. When you heard the different sound, you hit the trigger one more time, and if you did it just right, the hammer would jump up out of the concrete. Once you were practiced at it, you could relocate the bit to a different place on the concrete and begin again. The idea was to bust up the concrete in pieces about 6 inches across for easy removal. Sometimes the work meant that we were to remove concrete from a bridge or what was called flatwork. When the concrete was flat and thick, we moved to using the 90-pound jackhammer. The first time I ever used a jackhammer it was a 90 pounder on flatwork. I didn’t know how to run a jackhammer, since I had never used one. Just grabbing up the hammer for the first time was daunting to me. You had to drag the hammer along with the air hose, commercial jackhammers work on compressed air, to where you wanted to start working. So you are dragging a 90-pound machine and its air hose. I got it there, stood it up right and started hammering. All went well, until it broke though the concrete and into the less solid dirt below. When it hit the dirt, it immediately dug into the dirt and was stuck. I had to wiggle it back and forth. I was finally able to free it, but then I had to lift it out of the hole and start again. I thought to myself, “I will never make it through this day.” After watching me struggle for a couple of times, my boss walked over, took the hammer from me and said, “Watch.”

As I was watching him, he began digging through the concrete. But as he broke though into the dirt, the jackhammer magically jumped from the hole, and he expertly let it drop to a different position and started again. That is how I learned about the sound difference and what to do. Several years later, a friend of mine in Anza came by my house and told me about a fun thing in Palm Desert. It was a wet T-shirt contest. Now in those days at some events, wet T-shirt contests were held. That is to say that beautiful and sometimes buxom young ladies would put on tight fitting T-shirts and be dowsed with water, thus producing the desirable effect, so to speak. This of course was long before the current climate in the United States. Back in that day everyone just had fun, the young ladies included. Of course, this performance was held until last, and as we were waiting 4 men were brought out into the arena. I hadn’t noticed before, but there were 4 concrete slabs about 6 inches thick and 4 foot by 8 foot long in the middle of the arena. The men took positions at the end of the slabs. The announcer informed us that this was a jackhammer contest and that each of the 4 men was to be given a 90-pound jackhammer. The contest was about who could break up the slab into pieces 6 inches or smaller in the shortest time. Three of the men were young and very muscular looking, but when the last man was introduced he was said to be a grandfather. He wasn’t that big and was definitely

Opinion

overweight. My friend asked me which one of the 4 I would bet on. I told him the old man. He asked me why? I said experience. I’ll bet that old boy has run many a jackhammer. When the hammering began, I watched and listened to this old man and his hammer. I heard the

CIA spy penetration worse than presumed Harold Pease, Ph.D. SPECIAL TO ANZA VALLEY OUTLOOK Over the years, LibertyUnderFire has provided multiple columns on the National Security Agency’s massive intelligence gathering and storage of all electronic information from all electric devices and how such activity violated the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution of all U.S. citizens. Knowledge of such intelligence gathering is now well-known, and after the document dump by Edward Snowden four years ago, it is no longer disputed. Now new document dumps by WikiLeaks, one of over 9,000 documents beginning March 23 through April 22, reveal a second U.S. intelligence gathering organization potentially far worse than the NSA. The CIA, which is supposedly restricted to foreign intelligence gathering, has developed technology capable of turning our electronic devices, televisions, computers, iPhones – even

automotive technology – against the user anywhere in the world, even U.S. citizens. That invasive technology is why the unidentified whistleblower leaked the information to WikiLeaks. We do not disapprove of spying in other lands; it is always wise to know your opponents, plus they do it to us. Our concern rests with whether or not the practices are moral and constitutional? Government spying on U.S. citizens necessitates the full protection of the Bill of Rights for the accused, thus we have the same constitutional concerns as we do with the NSA spying on Americans. We also have concern about whether the CIA has exceeded its constitutional authority when it “commits actions to overthrow governments and influence elections,” as the documents purportedly show our having done on a consistent basis. The document trove named “Vault 7” identifies cyber weapons “mal-

CIA from page A-6 ware, viruses, trojans, weaponized ‘zero day’ exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation.” The WikiLeaks dump revealed a “globe-spanning force – its own substantial fleet of hackers” of “over 5,000 registered users and had produced more than a thousand hacking systems, trojans, viruses and other ‘weaponized’ malware” to be used at their discretion. And the document dumps keep coming. Document dumps code-named “Dark Matter” March 23, “Marble Framework” March 31, “Grasshopper” April 7, “Hive” April 14 and “Weeping Angel” April 21 has been released. Perhaps the most interesting information released, code-named “Dark Matter,” describes tools enabling it to remote into someone’s personal computer without his knowledge or consent and add, alter or delete files; such actions are unethical and unconstitutional. Most unethical of all is the CIA’s ability, without the victims’ knowledge, to plant false evidence, for example, child pornography or classified documents “that could be discovered at a later date by investigators serving a warrant.” The planted evidence, imbedded deep in the hardware, would be difficult to notice by the computer owner and would also have enormous blackmail potential. Tools under this generic name include “Dark Sea Skies,” “Sea Pea,” “Night Skies” and “Dark Mallet.” And according to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, referring to the dumps to follow, these past information releases are just “a small example of material to come.” This example of planted evidence has already happened to Sharyl Attkisson, a CBS News correspondent working in 2012 on an expose on the Benghazi scandal. The fans on both her lap top and office computers seemed to run excessively, so she had both looked at by a computer savvy government friend who found spyware on both and three classified government documents, presumably to frame her later, complete with a government internet service provider address. The planted evidence seemed to show that she had violated the Espionage Act, according to an article by Mitchell Shaw of New American April 17, 2017. Probably “Hive” is the second most interesting of the “Vault 7” dumps. According to WikiLeaks, it “is a backend infrastructure malware” used to “transfer exfiltrated information from target machines to the CIA and to receive commands from its operators to execute specific tasks on the targets.” Targeting firmware enabled CIA hackers to “remain in control of an infected device even if the target wipes the data and re-installs the operating system.” “Night Skies,” another part of “Vault 7,” deals with implanting iPhones, a practice which is nearly 10 years old. Wiping the data and re-installs do not affect their lodgment. Other CIA weapon programs have different names and purposes such as “UMBRAGE,” “Fine Dining” and “Improvise.” “Weeping Angel” enables the CIA to turn on video or audio functions of people’s television sets, whether on or off, allowing filming or audio recordation of the activities in the room. Assange claims not to have published all details of the hacking techniques revealed in the leaks as they would result in both the “good guys” and the “bad guys” getting them at the same time. The move could hurt the former. Even more disturbing in the WikiLeaks dump was documentation of the existence of a CIA Embedded Development Branch interested in future “mission areas,” for example, the ability to control the operating system of an automobile to “engage in nearly undetectable assassination.” CIA involvement in assassinations goes back to the ruling Diem brothers in South Vietnam in 1963, described in virtually every U.S. history textbook and continued into the CIA drone strikes under Obama. Such may have happened to journalist Michael Hastings in Los Angeles in 2013, who told friends, “I’m onto a big story.” The story was on CIA and NSA abuses. A guy who reportedly “drove like a grandma” went through a red light at more than 100 miles an hour crashing into a tree, according to the New American article by Newman. An eyewitness to the crash indicated that the automobile was on fire before it hit the tree and exploded. The “big story” was never published. Failing breaking and acceleration technology, controlled externally through computer malware, could remove a lot of resistance.
