Anza Valley Artists show fine art in the Community Hall Tony Ault TAULT@REEDERMEDIA.COM

The doors at the Anza Community Hall swung open Oct. 1 to let residents and visitors to meet some of the community’s finest artists at the Anza Valley Artists Fall Show and Sale. The Fall show featured local artist Gary Bello who since his retirement as a general contractor, became an outstanding artist creating fine western oil painting scenes with colorful horses, cowboys, cattle and Indians. While the dozen or more local artists proudly showed off their creations musician Phoenix Featureneck played smooth jazz and popular music on his guitar and keyboard bringing an air of culture and peace to the Hall. “I think it was even better that the previous show,” said Anza Valley Artists president Rosalie Grindle

Twas’ a real hoot at the Oct. 8 Anza Lions Hillbilly Festival Tony Ault TAULT@REEDERMEDIA.COM

It was a pig wrestlin’, pumpkin chuckin’, apple dunkin’, day of fun Oct. 8 at the first Anza Lion’s Club Hillbilly Festival at the Lions Club Gymkhana arena on Kirby Street. The activities at the arena tested the skill of both old and new “hillbilly” games that left many of contestants slippery with oil, covered in mud, sweaty and red faced but all wearing big grins a few missing a few teeth (fake that is). It was first time in a number of years that the Hillbilly Days event was staged by the Anza Lions. It was “time for it be revived,” said Roland Vellanoweth, Lion event announcer. The proceeds from the special event will go to the Lions Club glasses for children project,

scholarships, local nonprofits and other community events. The day under a warm sun was filled with numerous activities including a pumpkin toss using a rickety trebuchet that broke halfway through; greased pig wrestling; a hillbilly fashion show; new hillbilly bull, chicken and goat bingo games; hillbilly golf and horseshoes with wooden horseshoes and tin cans; the tug of war through the mud pit; apple dunking with a mud run; sack races; pie eating contests; the hot chili contest and others only the hillbilly mind could create. The most sought after prizes, besides a little cash in the bingo games, was a set of finely decorated grandma’s used toilet see HILLBILLIES, page A-6

Chris Vollan and Mandi Metzger, who won the Lions Hillbilly Festival Fashion Show dressed up and Ma and Pa Kettle, proudly show off their prizes, two fine “hillbilly birdfeeders” made from used toilet plungers crafted by “grandma.” Only the best for grandkids.

Hamilton High Coach Mo Chacon shares his story of faith

Coach Mo Chacon shares his story during a recent speech at Cahuilla Jodi Thomas photo Native Lighthouse

Jodi Thomas ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM Author’s note; Cahuilla Native Lighthouse, which was founded about 14 years ago to be a spiritual lighthouse of God’s truth – first to the Nation and then beyond, recently welcomed native son, Coach Mo Chacon. Chacon is the son of Nushune Chacon and grandson of tribal elder Nella Heredia. He coaches for Hamilton’s successful 2016 Bobcat Football team and recently went through his own spiritual awakening which he talked about as a guest speaker Oct. 1. The following are excerpts from what Coach Mo Chacon shared. Good morning about two and a half months ago I had a real encounter with Jesus Christ. I have been going to church all my life. When I was a kid we’d go to all these revivals on the reservation and I would think oh my Lord I hated those things. But, we always went and we were always there. We have been going to Valley Gospel since I was 5. I went through that and then going through high school and then going through college and I was saved but none of it was really real. Then it became really real a few months ago and I was thinking to myself why? Why now? There is a scripture that talks about how you are raising your kids. Raise your kids in the church they will go back to Him. I did not appreciate that back then, when I was young, but I do now and I want to thank you for that mom. Proverbs 22:6 New King James Version (NKJV) “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.” Today I am going to talk about some things God gives us. God gives us His Love, He gives us His Grace and He gives us Authority and I am going to share some scripture: Ephesians 2:4 English Standard Version (ESV) “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,….” Isn’t that awesome! 1 Thessalonians 1:4 ESV “4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you,…” God has chosen us! Ephesians 1:4 ESV “ Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love.” Before the foundation of the world we were Holy and blameless before Him because of His love; that is a big deal! We love our family our wife, our

kids, but if you think about it He is an entity that does not need our love, yet He loves you; it is a gift. He gives us love and puts us in his grace. That is another gift he does not have to do that. Acts 4:33 ESV “And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.” These were the apostles were giving their testimonies of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and they in His grace. That is amazing he just give it to us His Grace! Acts 20:32 ESV “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Through grace we are sanctified it does not matter what we did. He gives us Love and He gives us grace. He gives us authority: 2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” They are mountains; they are demonic powers and principalities. He has given us authority He gives us power over them. That is like giving my daughter a shot gun. That is authority and He has given us that. Ephesians 6:12 ESV “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Luke 10:17 ESV “The Return of the Seventy-Two” “The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” He gives us love, He gives us grace, and He gives us authority that is a really big deal. I was thinking why does he give us these things; I think it is not just because he loves us I believe it is deeper that. It is a deeper connection. You know the Spaniard in the movie the Princess Bride; on his journey he gets lost, his friends found him back at the Giants tavern. When he was asked what he was doing there and he said he was told if he gets lost he needed to go back to the beginning. So we will go back to the beginning. Genesis 1:1-2 ESV “The Creation of the World” “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” So God Created the Heavens

and the Earth. What did that really mean? What did God Created the Heavens and the Earth from? Think about it He was the only thing that was there, He always was. He made creation out of Himself. What was even more extraordinary is He first crafted a void out of Himself and then everything after that He just spoke it into existence, it just happened. He created the Heavens and Earth Out of Himself! This is where we come into play: Genesis 1:26 ESV “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So WE are Created in His image. Again what did He created us out of? Himself! I want to get that point across. You are a part of God. Why then do people do bad things? He loved us so much He give us free will. Why does He allow bad things to happen. It is because man has chosen that path to sin. He has given us free will. We are given free will to *choose our path (*Whether or not to accept His gift to bring us back to Himself by the sacrifice that Jesus made.) We are not robots; we are not slaves. It does not matter what we have done, what path we followed; WE are ALL Still A PART of GOD and He is a part of us. For me that put a different spin on things. Sometimes I think Why does he give us those things even when we do not deserve it. It is just like why we give our kids good things even when they may not (have) deserved or if they are in trouble we give them a pass. It is because those children are a part of us. We are a part of God; we are His children. I think that a big misconception is, it is not that He is just a generous God, because He is it is. He is not just handing gifts out to strangers He is handing gifts out to His children we are a part of Him. The Holy Spirit is the helper He has always been there. He set on our hearts. You can feel Him. The Holy Spirit is God, Jesus is God, and God is God. When we get discouraged, downtrodden, and when things go wrong; one day you are having the greatest day of your life and then tragedy happens and it is the worst day. It does not matter because you are a part of Him. It does not matter because He has overcome the world. That is what is hard. We want to do things our way, the way we see things; because we are selfish with ourselves. We want things our way and it is hard to give that up. When I coach, I tell my players; Do exactly what I say and I will put you in the right spot for the right play. But I cannot play the plays for you. If things do not work out you are off the hook, I am responsible. You’re off the hook you are free to play. It is the same with God, He is a good God and He knows what to do. If we allow God to work in us, give up our selfishness, follow Him and we are off the hook. Remember we are a powerful being. Deuteronomy 32:30 Living Bible (TLB) “3 How could one single enemy chase a thousand of them, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had abandoned them, Unless the Lord had destroyed them?” Together when we pray and come

My husband is on Medicare and the ‘Medical Group’ he was with was stringing him along for over a year concerning his health issues. Egregious things kept happening and we were more than frustrated. I suggested we talk to Charise about what we were experiencing. I thought perhaps she would know what we should do. When my husband shared what was going on with Charise she took the matter seriously and moved into action; she even made phone calls to his current medical group to see if we could get some satisfaction. After getting nowhere herself she checked out the groups rating. She discovered their customer care rating was so bad they were in danger of losing their insurance companies that subscribe patients to them. She promptly found my husband a new group with excellent ratings. Come this last January 2016 for the first time someone took my husband’s cardiac Arrhythmia and other issues seriously. He was sent to an excellent Cardiologist who promptly sent him to a Superb Electrophysiologist who found what the problem was. Surgery was scheduled and using an ablation technique, the Electrophysiologist was able to fix his arrhythmia. My husband is doing much better and I believe her caring ways helped to save his quality and quantity of life. The right insurance group is important and having a knowledgeable caring person like Charise on your side is invaluable.” - The Thomas’

Barbara Bradford celebrates turning 94 years young Jodi Thomas ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM

Oct. 5 was Barbara Bradford’s 94th Birthday and friends and family gathered at the Claim Jumper to celebrate the occasion with one of Anza’s most recognizable women. Most of those attending were from Bradford’s exercise class that she attends twice a week in Temecula. Her Cousin Bill, celebrating his 91st birthday, made the drive up from San Diego as he always does and Bradford’s other friend Bill from exercise class, also in attendance, was turning 92. The three friends enjoyed their time together dining and afterward enjoyed red

velvet cake. Bradford has been an active member in the Anza and Aguanga areas since the 1950s and has watched the place change and grow over the years. Together with her husband Bill Bradford she saw one of the greatest changes for the area happen, the electrification of 300plus square miles of service and the formation of the Anza Electric Coop. It all started with Rupert Costo and a note sent to Bill Bradford some 65 years ago with an idea that would bring affordable electricity to the Anza Valley and beyond. Barbara’s book on how electric came to the valley “Let there be Light,” can be found at www.

Anza Electric is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of the highly anticipated Solar Array. Please join us Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the Cooperative office for the official groundbreaking of Anza Electric’s 2 Megawatt Solar Array.

The Hamilton Bobcats were met with more adversity Friday, Oct. 7, unfortunately with bitter results as they fell short in their non-league game against the Mountain Empire Red Hawks. The Red Hawks passing offense was too much for Hamilton, as they racked up 307 passing yards with 4 touchdowns and 80 rushing yards with 2 more touchdown in the 15-41 loss. In spite of the loss, there were some great individual efforts for the Bobcats throughout the game. Isaac Chacon (#42) shined again on the offensive side of the ball with another touchdown and 50 total yards. Carlos Graves (#21)

also shined with 110 total yards. Saul Perez (#10) added another 50 yards and a touchdown, and Jacob Graves (#28) worked hard to gain 51 rushing yards to add to the offensive effort. While the defense had a rough night, both Saul Perez and Jacob Graves had five tackles, and Levi Ross (#73) and Tyler Mosely (#5) both had an interception. Sadly, the individual efforts did not result in a team victory, and the Hamilton Bobcats will start their league games with a 2-4 record. Stats: Offense: 227 total rushing yards and 35 total passing yards for a total of 262 offensive yards. Carlos Graves: 90 rushing yards, 20 passing yards. Isaac Chacon: 35 rushing yards,

15 passing yards, and a touchdown. Jacob Graves: 51 rushing yards. Saul Perez: 35 rushing yards, 15 receiving yards, and a touchdown. Michael Jones: 20 receiving yards. Defense: Allowed 80 rushing yards and 307 passing yards for a total of 387 yards. Saul Perez: 5 tackles. Jacob Graves: 5 tackles. Michael Jones: 4 tackles. Michael Rozzo: 3 tackles. Carlos Graves: 3 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass tip. Dakota Lassen: 3 tackles. Levi Ross: 1 tackle, 1 pass tip, and 1 interception. Tyler Mosely: 1 tackle, 1 interception, 2 pass tips. The rest of team racked up 5 tackles and a sack.

Gold Star Mother Donna Schumacher shares the pain of losing a son Jodi Thomas ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM

We will never forget him, shared Gold Star Mother Donna Schumacher about her son Robert Pearcy. Pictured here with her son Terry Pearcy and girlfriend Kim, Donna is a Gold Star Mother, a mom who has lost a child to war. The Virtual Wall reports that U.S. Marine Corps PFC Robert Leslie Pearcy of D Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, born Jan. 20, 1950, was killed in action June 4, 1969. His name can be found on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, on Panel 23W, Line 067. To learn more about the battle that took PFC Pearcy’s life, visit www.virtualwall.org.

Gold Star Mother Donna Schumacher says she still misses her son even after all this time. Schumacher’s son, U.S. Marine Corps PFC Robert Leslie Pearcy was killed in action June 4, 1969.

Gold Star Mother Donna Schumacher shared that she still misses her son, Robert Pearcy during a ceremony Sunday, Sept. 25, in her honor at the Anza VFW. Though it was 47 years ago when the Marine was killed in action, the loss is still felt by her and her family every day. Her son, Robert Pearcy, a private first class in the United States Marine Corps, was just 19 when he was lost in battle June 4, 1969. The young Marine had taken the place of someone else who was sick that day and went out on the mission in his stead. Six men, including Pearcy lost their lives that day. History would later note they would be the last six U.S. Marines to die in the Vietnam War.

Schumacher recalls what a caring child he was and says it would be just like him to volunteer to take someone else’s duty. She still thinks of him often and wishes she could have watched him grow up. Her son, Terry Pearcy, Robert’s older brother, sits at the end of the table and nods. He did not enter the war due to health issues for which his mother is grateful. Schumacher notes that she flies a Gold Star Flag every day and has a Gold Star banner hanging in her window to remind all who pass by of her family’s sacrifice for the nation’s freedoms. She encourages everyone who sees someone with such a flag to say thank you to the family for their sacrifice as it means so very much to them, something she knows firsthand.

Always popular Anza artist Manuel Zuniga shows off some of his art creations pained on antique saws at the Anza Valley Artists Fall Show and Sale at the Community Hall. An open door at the Anza Community Hall invites the public and other artists to come in and enjoy the works of local artists during the Oct. 1 annual Anza Valley Artists Tony Ault photos Fall Show and Sale.

ARTISTS from page A-1 at the show. “It is a success, a great success. We have been busy all morning and must have had several hundred visitors.” Some paintings and other artful creations were sold by the artists during the show that lasted most of the day. “You know this is our 10th anniversary show,” Grindle said smiling. She said the shows are more than just a vehicle for the local artist to show and sell some of their art. “We want to encourage those to follow through with their artwork and inspire others.” Currently she said the group has 22 member artists. Featured artist Bello said Grindle’s wish for the group to encourage other artists to bring out their artistic skills inspired him to pursue his painting. He said encouraged by local artist Valentino Lamb whose classes helped him hone his skill in oil painting. “I always like art and had the time to take classes,” said Bello. He learned that he had to be careful painting with oil because errors cannot be easily corrected. “Practice make perfect, you know.” Looking at some his artwork it hard to believe he has only been working at it for about two years. Just like Bello other artist at the show had similar stories including Sundee J. Shelly-Ziegler with her Mystical Cat Art Studio creations, Nancy Swanson with her animal paintings, Larry Scribner with his pen and ink creations and Susan Gonzalez with her fine leather purses and accessories. Other artists enjoyed showing off their works as well. The Anza Valley Artists who like to “inspire and encourage each other to produce meaningful creative

HILLBILLIES from page A-1 plungers craftily made into bird feeders. Those fine prizes went to none other than the Anza Valley’s favorite couple, Ma and Pa Kettle and their passel of kids. Receiving the prizes and dubbed the king and queen of the hillbilly fashion

event were Chris Vollan and Mandi Metzger. Chris with his kids; Titan Vollan, 14 and Cash Vollan, 8, proudly strolled about the grounds. Boasting of his prowess in wrestling down a very slippery pig amongst more than half dozen other contestants was Steven Williams. He spent the rest of the

afternoon wiping off the grease from the unhappy pig. This Anza Valley Outlook photojournalist learned a bit about “Hi Octane Hurricane,” a one-ton Brahma Bull owned by championship rodeo bull wrangler Nick Nucifano. Hurricane, a pet to Anza’s Nucifano family,

looked gentle enough and strongly photogenic but wasn’t too sure about this photographer on the other side of the pen whom he charged head and horns down to show whose territory he owned – no argument there. However, happy was Bull Bingo winner Greg

Bruce who thanked Hurricane for dropping his “chip” on the right bingo square in the pen. It was all in fun for participants, vendors and local children who will long remember the Lions Hillbilly Festival of 2016. Hillbilly dress was the way to go Oct. 8 as these contestants for the Anza Lions Hillbilly Days ‘Hillbilly Fashion Show,” Old and young could participate.

Ninth annual Chili Cook-Off and Presentation of Adoptable Horses at Heavenly Horse Haven coming Oct. 22 Jodi Thomas ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM

Warm days and cool nights means fall is here and so is the ninth annual Chili Cook-Off and Presentation of Adoptable Horses at Heavenly Horse Haven. Nestled in the hills of the historical Terwilliger Valley area of Anza, HHH’s mission is to help meet the need for a “safe haven” for horses or other farm animals who are at risk, neglected, abused, unwanted, in need of special care or are too expensive to keep. This event is a fundraiser as well as a way for HHH to let residents and visitors know what they are all about. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 22, from noon until 4 p.m. Heavenly Horse Haven is a premier horse and animal rescue. It has always been HHH’s policy to rehabilitate or retrain, when appropriate, before putting horses up for adoption. This way they are ready to be good family members in their new forever homes. HHH uses non-force natural horse training methods, which have proven to be a successful method for years. Over time HHH has partnership with other horse lovers, training stables, special trainers and other rescue organizations. Lately, they have been partnering up with Miracle Ranch Equine Therapy located in Garner Valley whose clinical doctor, Dr. Gaedt and staff uses horses and other animals such as alpacas, to heal the hearts and minds of men, women and children. This partnership has produced some amazing stories of healing between man and beast. Some of these miracles of the healing between animals and humans will be shared in presentations throughout the day. All the hard work of all those who worked with HHH horses will be on display throughout the day as well during the presentations of adoption horses. This has led to the event’s theme founder Gina Perrin has chosen “There Can Be Miracles If You Believe.” The Chili Cook-off has become a HHH tradition. Everyone loves to eat, dress up and have fun so a Chili CookOff on a fall day is a great jump-start toward that goal. It’s also an opportunity to show off your culinary skills, so bring your favorite chili recipe, pick of theme and dress the part and show off what you got! There will be games fun and prizes, vendors of all kinds, and all sorts of

rescued animals to play with. So bring your friend’s family and do not forget your camera and plan to have a memorable time in the country at Heavenly Horse Haven. Contact Founder Gina Perrin at (951) 551-3561 for more information.

HHH is a nonprofit and it is located at 58290 Marlis (Barnfather) Lane in Anza. For more information and a map, visit www.heavenlyhorsehaven.org. To learn more about the Therapies Miracle Horse Ranch has to offer, visit www.miraclehorseranch.com.
