The Hamilton High School gymnasium was buzzing with nervous anticipation, Nov. 17, as students were getting ready to learn a much-needed skill, preparing for and completing a job interview. Students played out mock job in-

terviews focusing on their desired choice of career. The ninth through 12th grade students that participated in the mock interviews came prepared with knowledge of how to successfully go to a job interview. They had prepared resumes with the help of Ryan Kleinvachter, Jane Recht and many others. Many were

dressed professionally and had filled out job applications for their career choice. With a great assortment of jobs that pertain to Anza as well as anywhere in the world, jobs such as mechanical assistant, construction assistant, military, sheriff cadet, junior photographer, dishwasher/fast food, animal tech, ranch hand were just a few of the

In my stories, I have written many times how the little town of Anza has come together and helped residents in their time of need. Our family twice has been in need and yes, the people in Anza were there to do whatever it took to help us through our rough patch. The first was when my sister got hurt (a story for another time), the next when my dad got bit by a stud horse named Entrepreneur. The friendly members of the community came together to help watch us kids, they also brought food and even did chores around the ranch while my dad was in the

hospital and recuperating. When I was writing this story for my mom’s family album in 2009, she had told me that she remembered most the moral support from her friends and how she did not feel belittled but quite the opposite, she was so uplifted by their concern. What a town, a town that I can say I am proud to be a part of. It was a spring day on the Kellogg’s Farm, my dad was plowing the weeds in the orchard when he heard a horse’s cry from the stud area. A well-known stud by the name of Entrepreneur had his foot caught in the v-shaped wire. They came from as far away as Anaheim to help celebrate the official grand opening of Mr. Happy’s Mercantile Nov. 26. Anza’s newest retail store at 57475 Highway 371 specializes in local artist’s creations and period antiques. Robert Sawtelle, along with his wife Teresa, daughters Raelyn and Annalyn and mother Rusty Browning stayed busy throughout the day introducing customers to the many crafts and antiques on consignment in the new store. All the for sale items in the store are on consignment, most to local artists and craftsmen, explained Sawtelle. The colder, rainy weather and an area power failure that afternoon did not dampen the spirits of customers and family. The Sawtelles, with the cash register down and lights off in the display area, gave out handwritten sales receipts to Teresa Sawtelle and her daughter Annalyn at the register help one of Mr. Happy’s Mercantile’s new customers. SDCWA approves grant application for Anza Baseline groundwater basin study Joe Naiman JNAIMAN@REEDERMEDIA.COM The November 2014 election included the passage of Proposition 1, whose allocations included $510 million to the state Department of Water Resources to support projects included in Integrated Regional Water Management programs approved by DWR. Proposition 1 also stipulated 12 IRWM funding areas which are based on hydrologic areas rather than county boundaries. The San Diego County Water Authority coordinates grant applications for the San Diego Funding Area which includes the Upper Santa Margarita Planning Region

and the South Orange County Planning Region as well as the San Diego Planning Region. On Oct. 27, the SDCWA board authorized the submittal of a Disadvantaged Community Engagement Planning Grant application which includes a request for $534,000 for a proposed Anza Baseline groundwater basin study. The San Diego Funding Area is expected to receive $48.8 million in grants from Proposition 1. Each funding area must spend at least 10 percent of its total Proposition 1 allocation on projects designed to benefit disadvantaged communities. The Disadvantaged Community Engagement Planning Grant process calls for each funding

area to submit a single funding application which includes all of the projects proposed by the regions within the funding area. That criteria warranted the inclusion of projects in areas not within the SDCWA boundaries. DWR staff members met with staff from the planning regions to discuss the application plans before the submittals, and meetings to review the applications will take place after the submittals. That DWR involvement is intended to improve the understanding of the regional planners on the waterrelated needs of disadvantaged communities and to identify and develop solutions to obstacles which hamper the involvement

of disadvantaged communities in water planning. In November 2002 the state’s voters approved Proposition 50, which authorized the spending of $3.4 billion for projects involving fresh water and coastal resources including $500 million for IRWM planning and implementation grants. Following the passage of Proposition 50 the SDCWA, the City of San Diego, and the County of San Diego formed a regional water management group (RWMG) to lead the IRWM effort in the San Diego region. The SDCWA was designated as the lead agency for the RWMG, which also organized a Regional Advisory Committee with 28 voting members and six

non-voting members from water management, business, academia and other sectors. The RWMG and the Regional Advisory Committee organized a workgroup of six technical experts to review potential Proposition 1 grant projects submitted by local sponsors and to develop the package of projects to be included in the grant application. The workgroup also met with their Upper Santa Margarita River and South Orange County colleagues before recommending a project list in August 2016. The grant request for the Anza Baseline groundwater basin study was sponsored by the Ramona Band of Cahuilla Indians.

The judges rated the different “applicants” on their performance and then held a “call back” to work on students’ follow up skills. The students involved all received a certificate of participation and the top two from each category received a ribbon for either first or second place. All came up winners after participating in the event where they were able to learn firsthand about finding a job. An unidentified student said as she came in that she was very nervous, but when she was leaving with her ribbon said, “I realize now there wasn’t anything to be nervous about, a job interview isn’t as hard as I thought it would be.” The district wide competition was put on by Career and Technical Education. The students were judged on three components – resume with completed cover sheet prepared in advance, complete a job application day of in 30 minutes or less. and a 15-minute job interview. Some of the volunteer judges included locals Jim Palmer for forest tech, Bud Elmore for mechanic’s assistant, Phil Canaday for computer tech, Brian McGowan for dishwasher/ fast food, Robert Cobb, for military enlistment, Raisa Stebbins and Marilyn Smith for floral clerk and plant sales and Maria Hernandez for nurse’s aide. Many others were involved behind the scenes as well. Robyn Garrison said she “has been involved with the competition for quite a few years now, it is so good for the kids.” Steven Packard, one of the judges, told the students that were called back for the follow up interview, “There is plenty of money out there to be had, you just have to do the hard work to go out and get it” and that their reputation was key. “ Yo u w i l l i n c r e a s e y o u r opportunity if you, one, keep a good attitude, and two, always be prompt, five minutes early is always better than five minutes late, and remember the boss is the boss for a reason, do what they ask you to do,” Packard said. Some of the winning students might be eligible for the statewide competition that takes place in Norco. Afterward the judges and staff had a meeting to discuss how they can improve the competition for the future. Fewer students participated this year 70 to last year’s 100. They discussed how the students took it very seriously and they seemed to realize that interviewing is an executive function. It was a positive experience for all involved.

This year the weatherman expects a little cooler temperatures than last year so those who plan to attend should wrap themselves and their children in warm and comfortable clothes. The evergreen tree in front of the Community Hall that provides shade to those visiting the Hall during the summer months will light up with hundreds of lights to brighten the winter season and bring a feeling of warmth and joy to the season.

Every year Christmas in Anza Valley has grown and this year should even be even better, according to community leaders. Last year Santa arrived to meet the children in the Hall parking lot riding in a white carriage pulled by two beautifully decorated Anza horses. This year local elves Terry Seldon and Barbara Keller are expected to once again to lead the festivities with food and entertainment from The Fun Club and Thimble Club members. Anza Electric Co-op will help with the Christmas Tree lighting. This year the Community Hall will provide warmth and delicious

food for those who braved the cold while the tree was lighted. He found a shovel for cleaning the paddocks. My dad grabbed it and without thinking went inside the corral. He used the shovel handle to part the wire. As the stud was freed he grabbed my dad by the wrist and being the ill-tempered stud he was, he threw my dad around like a rag doll, until Luther the trainer came running. How Luther got the stud to let go I cannot say but my dad remembered that day for his whole life and also told me he had bad dreams about the stud that made him feel so very helpless. His pain was a constant reminder. If only he had tried to free the stud from outside instead of inside was a thought he had had afterwards, knowing the horse was so mean and you would have to wonder why Luther put another stud next to Entrepreneur, which caused the fence fight. After that my dad designed special stud pens made from solid wood. My dad’s whole life was horses. He had three studs that he was very proud of; one was Flashy Wind who had many ribbons in show and was a well-sought-after stud: Hank was his second love but nobody could compare to Brooktree. My dad even had his portrait done. All three studs were very well-behaved and brought my dad much joy.

Les Allen’s fingers were flying over the guitar strings as his City Limits Band rocked the Diamond Valley Arts Center Saturday night Nov. 19 in a special performance in downtown Hemet. An appreciative audience clapped and cheered as the band played some of the top rock songs of the age. The band, including top musicians Allen on guitars and vocals, Jeff Brown on the keyboards, Garrett Morris on the drums and Robert Mann on bass, kicked off the performance with the famous Eagles song “Tequila Sunrise,” while they awaited the arrival of electric guitarist David Mills. It was the second performance by City Limits at the Diamond Valley Arts Council, said Allen before the performance. “We really like coming here,” Allen said. The band is well-known in the North County for their rockabilly and blues music. Each of Allen’s guitars come alive when he runs through their strings at an amazing speed, never missing a note. “I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 13,” Allen said, and his performance shows that skill. Steel guitarist Mills arrived in a little late coming from another gig, but quickly set up to match Allen

with his musical skills in several songs. The classics, “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Take it Easy,” “Neon Blues,” and “Highway to Your Heart,” played by City Limits, brought more warm and loud applause. Wineglasses were lifted to the band for their musical skills. Fine wines and soft drinks were available at the Art Center’s stage bar during the performance. Admission to musical events at the center was $20, and two drink tickets were included in the admission. The cost of the event was considered a donation to the local 501(c)(3) organization. The Diamond Valley Arts Center is located in the historic 110-yearold building at 123 N. Harvard St. in downtown Hemet. With its colorful staging, candle-lighted tables and chairs, the concert by City Limits was up close and personal, like all special performances at the center. In addition to special music events, usually once a month, spectators can enjoy a plethora of art events and exhibitions open to the public and aspiring artists in the community. Bill Kern, a patron of the arts, never misses the music performances at the center. “I like all kinds of music,” Kern said. “I wish more people would come here to these events, they are wonderful.”

Elena Kern, DVAC board member, said other events are planned by the council in December including a “Shhh…It’s a Prohibition” party and show Dec. 3, hosted by the Hemet Heritage Foundation and the Destination Coffee Bar & Bistro and a performance by the Valley Vocal Ensemble also Dec. 3. The “Shhh… It’s a Prohibition” party and show is $35 per person. The Valley Vocal Ensemble performance is with a $20 for members and $25 for non-members by donation. The Diamond Valley Arts Council is dedicated to promoting awareness of and opportunities for involvement in the visual, performing and literary arts and in cultural interest at venues throughout the Hemet and San Jacinto valleys. The Diamond Valley Art Center and Council memberships are available starting at $35 for individuals per year and organizations for $100 per year. Student memberships to age 23 are free. The grand opening was the cumulation of a lot of work and struggles with Riverside County for more than a year as the Sawtelle family worked to bring the old store/service station up to standards and obtain the necessary permits. “This is great,” said Sawtelle taking a break from showing off his full-sized hand carved wooden Harley Davidson Fatboy motorcycle on display to the public. Now that Mr. Happy’s Mercantile is open, just in time for the upcoming holidays, the store will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through the end of the year. New consignments are welcome, except for large items like furniture. He said the store opened with 20 to 25 artists and craftsmen putting their creations and collector items on consignment. California U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer threatens measures to end the Electoral College, as has someone every presidential election. Those in this camp prefer the popular vote but without the College a close race would make the election far less settled and result in massive civil unrest perhaps even civil war. Thank God we have the Electoral College that legitimizes the outcome. In the 2016 presidential race Trump’s projected win is 306 electoral votes to Clintons 232, but Clinton bested Trump with 1 1/2 million more popular votes out of 125,505,086 cast for the two. The divide is a little over one percent. Imagine the endless recounts, accusations of voter fraud that would have to be investigated and the time to determine the outcome legitimizing the winner if that were even possible. even knew the popular vote count. As volatile and emotional as the reaction to the Trump victory was, who can guarantee that the losing side would not revolt as in other countries. One might argue that in a democracy everyone should have an equal vote and a simple majority should be what counts. But the Founding Fathers did not create a democracy. They universally opposed it because it had failed in Athens and Rome and in every other place it had been tried longterm and hoped that descendants would never turn what they created into such. The word democracy is not in any of our original governing documents—the word republic is. Benjamin Franklin referred to democracy as two wolves and a lamb voting on what they would have for lunch; the wel--armed lamb contesting the vote. Realizing that the majority is not always right and, as such, could trample the rights of the minority becoming very tyrannical, they created a republic instead, thus we pledge allegiance to “the republic for which it stands.” A lynch mob is a democracy; everyone voting to hang the accused except the one proposed to be hung. There is no language in the Constitution authorizing a popular vote for the president because the people tend to vote for leaders who can give them the most from

Remember, Adolph Hitler was elected. Presumably this would have been thwarted had Germany a functioning electoral college to mitigate the emotion or ignorance of the masses. Under a democracy a dangerous man, knowingly hostile to the concepts of a republic, could occupy this position to destroy it. The citizens chosen to be Electoral College voters do so in their separate state capitols usually in late November and that vote is sent to, and read by, the vice president of the United States before a combined session of both Houses of Congress usually the first week in December. It remains the best system in the world. I realize that in a day when we have high-speed communication it is easy to assume that, as a result, we have high-speed knowledge and experience as well. As a college professor in the subject area, I can emphatically argue otherwise. Nothing replaces the benefits of reason and experience and these don’t come high speed. So the states with their populations have voted and Trump has 36 Electoral College votes more than the 270 needed and Clinton 38 under—a clear, clean, decisive vote for both winner and loser. Thank God we have the Electoral College. Why would we wish to change to a system that almost guarantees confusion and chaos? President Obama offered free cell phones to entice voters and Bernie Sanders free college. It becomes a “blood sport” as to which candidate can give the most “goodies” to get elected. “Gift giving” should not be in the equation. The Founding Fathers left the election of the president to the states through their population. The vote system they created, referred to as the Electoral College, spread the vote geographically by states, and favored the informed over the less informed. Everyone knew that a popular vote could be won by a few populated states, (today as few as ten, some say four), and that rural states or sections would never see the candidate nor would he make an appeal to their interests. To equalize the population advantage and encourage candidates to make a larger geographical appeal, the College gave populationdeprived states disproportionately at least three votes.
