SHOREWOOD IS SOMETHING SPECIAL What do you want in a community? There’s so much to consider when choosing a new place to live. Feeling comfortable in your new space is, obviously, a major factor. But when you move in, you’ll also become part of a community that will define your living experience in so many ways. Shorewood’s many unique and desirable attributes make it a true gem of a community. The Village of Shorewood was established in 1917 and covers a small geographical space, measuring only a mile by a mile-and-a-half. With just over 13,000 residents today, Shorewood is the densest community in the state. This urban village is walkable, bike-friendly and architecturally diverse. When you live here, you’re close to everything — the lake, the city of Milwaukee, a major university, a school district known and recognized for excellence, the businesses that have what you need, bike trails, parks — and friendly, well-educated neighbors who care deeply about their community and are quick to volunteer their time and talents to make Shorewood the best possible place to live, work, and raise a family and retire.

When you live here, you’re close to everything...

1

Location, location, location Shorewood is uniquely located just north of a big city, and between a great lake and a major river. Shorewood’s scenic location along the lakeshore and convenience to downtown Milwaukee are among our most attractive assets. You can walk or bike anywhere in Shorewood or the surrounding area, and most times you can be downtown at work or enjoying dinner or a show in just minutes by car. Saving time on your commute means spending more time where you want to. 43

Family-focused resources Shorewood is a community that encourages and supports family-focused resources, recreation and activities that help build a supportive network among parents and neighbors. Each of the Shorewood schools has an active Parent Teacher Organization and offers numerous family activities. Both of the elementary schools and Atwater Park have state-of-the-art playgrounds for getting fresh air and meeting other children and families. Shorewood Recreation Department and Shorewood Library provide a wide range of activities for residents and visitors, and the Atwater Park beach provides access to free fun and frolicking in Lake Michigan.

Urban village Shorewood combines big-city amenities with small-town accessibility and values, balancing historic character with modern convenience and experiences. There are over 275 businesses in the business district of Shorewood along Oakland Avenue and Capitol Drive, including a state-of-the-art, two level Metro Market grocery store, over 30 food and beverage related businesses, over 30 retail businesses and over 30 salons. Most anything you need is just minutes away and easy to get to by walking, biking or driving.

Variety of housing options Shorewood is filled with a variety of single family homes, duplexes, apartment buildings and condominiums, which meet the diverse needs of the community. A slim majority (51%) of residents are renters — and they are renters of all ages and stages of life. Since the 2006 Master Plan, the village has added 128 new apartments and 195 more will be completed by the end of 2016. Shorewood boasts a strong urban commercial district where many people choose to live above the mixed use buildings to maximize convenience. Shorewood also has an assisted living and memory care facility for older residents who want to be near their families.

Historic architecture The Village of Shorewood has 6,361 households within its wide range of single family homes, duplexes and apartments. There is a wonderful variety of architectural styles including Colonial, Tudor, Late-Georgian, Bungalow, Prairie and more. The talented craftsmen who built these homes, 58% in 1939 or before, were skilled in their trades and are responsible for our Village architecture standing the test of time for generations and continuing to generate solid real estate values.
