Memories of Oakley

Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a different village in every issue. This time, we take a walk down memory lane in Oakley.

 Soldiers on a motorbike in Oakley Park, in 1915. The photograph was taken by Earnest Abraham, who travelled with troops on manoeuvres.

 The Lincolnshire Yeomanry at Oakley Park, taken in 1914 by Earnest Abraham, who travelled with the troops.

 This 1915 postcard shows billets for solders at Oakley Park, who trained there before going to France.

Looking along Oakley Street, this 1911 postcard shows a mix of old and new houses. The population at the time was 236.

 Bottom Left: The Oakley Harriers, in 1920, on a hunt at Worlingworth. They travelled from village to village with landowners’ permission and must have been quite a sight!

Bottom Right: The Oakley Green Man pub, in 1912, with its delightful thatched roof. The landlord at the time was Robert Green. The pub closed in the 1960s.

The Norfolk Postcard Club is now closed permanently. But if readers have any local postcards of Diss or the surrounding villages, please get in touch with Dennis after 7pm on 01379 651897.
