Breaks boundaries to go ‘Beyond’

Norwich Theatre has launched a brand new stage: Norwich Theatre Beyond. It will see the theatre take shows that it has supported, produced or enabled out of its venues in Norwich and into the wider region.

“Creativity has no boundaries, and neither does Norwich Theatre,” says CEO and Creative Director Stephen Crocker. “‘Beyond’ recognises the importance of accessing art in the places people live and reaching those who may not be able to access theatre by traditional means.”

Norwich Theatre Beyond sits alongside its other stages: Royal, Playhouse, Stage Two and Digital.

“With Norwich Theatre Beyond, expect to see fantastic and enthralling productions in unusual places and communityowned spaces. This new stage will be a hub for local theatre, supporting local artists and telling stories of the community that surrounds us,” adds Stephen.

One of the newest shows going ‘Beyond’ is Rebel Rabble, produced by Norwich-based theatre company, Limbik, and supported by Norwich Theatre’s Artist Development programme. Rebel Rabble is a large-scale, immersive event on Mousehold Heath (16 Sep to 2 Oct). The production is inspired by the local history of Kett’s Rebellion.

The show invites a collective audience to a site-specific audio trail and promenade performance. As a group, they are guided through the landscape, listening to a fictional retelling of Kett’s Rebellion. Along the way, they encounter actors playing the characters, as well as extraordinary visual performance brought to life by a community cast embodying the Rebels.

Pay off your mortgage and have spare cash

By Russell Golledge, Chartered Financial Adviser with DG Financial Services

Two teachers had just nine months to pay £140,000 to clear the interest-only mortgage on their £440,000 home. They could not pay the outstanding debt – but they could pay interest.

We advised them to take out a retirement interest-only mortgage to pay the debt. This type of mortgage assesses your salary, work and state pensions, savings and monthly living expenses, and sets up a fixed interest rate for life.

This means the teachers can now plan expenditure and leave an inheritance for their children. It also enabled them to remain in their house and have an extra £30,000 spare cash too. They now have the freedom to enjoy their retirement years travelling and spending quality time with friends and family.

Even if the husband whose income is higher dies first, or goes into long term care, both of his wife’s pensions once she retires provide enough income to support her monthly outgoings.

The ability to pay monthly repayments for anyone taking out a retirement interest-only mortgage is affected if income falls, outgoings rise and if inflation reduces the purchasing power of their income.

LEARNING

On course for autumn workshops

Stephen Poulter is well known across Norfolk and Suffolk as a teacher of adult leisure courses, and for the one-off talks he gives to local community groups. This autumn, Stephen is launching a programme of workshops and courses along the border between the two counties, which are open to people from all ages and backgrounds, on weekdays and weekends.

Under the banner of Anglia Leisure Courses, Stephen will be teaching courses on Researching the History of Historic Buildings, exploring Historic Tours of Norfolk and Suffolk, and Adapting Plays and Stage Musicals for the Cinema, in Stowmarket, Stradbroke, Diss and Pulham St Mary.

Stephen explains: “I’ve delivered a whole range of adult training for the WEA, Coastal Leisure Learning and other educational organisations for the past six years, and I now want to offer a range of subjects in my local area where there is currently no provision for these types of courses. “I particularly enjoy interacting with the many older retired people who attend my courses – not only because they enjoy learning in a relaxed and informal setting, but they also appreciate meeting fellow residents and making new friends.”

Other speakers and tutors contributing to the programme include local historian, Baroness Elaine Murphy, who will be launching a series of monthly talks at Stradbroke Community Centre on 30 September, where she will discuss her recent books on Wingfield Castle and Monks Hall in Syleham. Artist and photographer, Anna Partington, will be running a two day workshop on Pet Portraits in Watercolour at the Pennoyer Centre in Pulham in November.

Stephen is very interested to hear from other potential tutors who could offer art, crafts, literature, history and other culturally themed courses in Norfolk and Suffolk from January 2023.
