he Baraboo area is nestled in a range of ancient mountains in south central Wisconsin, between Devil’s Lake State Park and the Wisconsin Dells. As the location of Circus World Museum, the International Crane Foundation, the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center, and the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center, the Baraboo area is the destination for countless visitors each year. Once here, many visitors enjoy the local quality of life and strong economy and decide to make the Baraboo area their new home. T
The historic downtown square contributes to the feeling that history is alive in Baraboo. In a scene that resembles something from a Norman Rockwell painting, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, art galleries and specialty retail stores surrounding the historic county courthouse. Complementing the downtown stores are other specialty stores and a variety of larger, national retail chain stores that serve the area and are located on the west side of the community. While treasuring its past, the Baraboo area looks toward the future of business in the area. Industries continue to be attracted to the Baraboo area because of its strategic location, both in the state and in the Midwest. Because of our location and the quality of the local work force, a number of companies of all sizes have chosen to make their home in the Baraboo area. Further contributing to the quality of life in the Baraboo area are our affordable housing options, excellent public and

History ime has been gentle to the Baraboo area; its vibrant history is evident in everything from its carefully maintained Victorian homes to the spectacular milethick layer of Baraboo quartzite that hugs the city. This glossy, pink rock (dating back 1.7 billion years) emerges in Devil’s Lake State Park, continues deep below the earth’s surface and then surfaces once again a few miles north of Baraboo, serving as a brilliant reminder of the historical richness that permeates the city.
T
According to one historical interpretation, Baraboo is named after a French trader and trapper who bartered with Native Americans near the mouth of a stream, which today bears his name. Initially, only the river was called Baraboo; the name later applied to the bluffs, the city and the town.
From the beginning, early settlers were attracted to Baraboo’s ideal location and abundant water supply. The lumber industry flourished upon the banks of the Baraboo River, and trading for the rich agricultural land surrounding the town soon followed, serving as a catalyst for Baraboo’s progressive growth. A charter election in 1866 created the Village of Baraboo; 16 years later, on April 1, 1882, Baraboo became a city by legislative action of the State of Wisconsin. Today, the City of Baraboo is the proud home of more than 12,000 people. Next door, the Village of West Baraboo is home to over 1,400 people. Together, Baraboo and West Baraboo boast a thriving tourism industry, wonderful homes and a wide range of recreational opportunities.

Culture tepping into the magnificently designed Al. Ringling Theatre is like being transported into the early pages of Baraboo’s rich cultural history. Built in 1915 and crafted in the style of the Great Opera Hall at the Palace of Versailles, the Al. Ringling Theatre has been an ornate fixture in downtown Baraboo for over 90 years. Red carpeted hallways, intricate ceiling frescos, golden carved theater boxes and fine draperies attribute to the theater’s reputation as the “prettiest playhouse in America.” Since opening night, the theater has featured everything from vaudeville to opera, as well as a variety of live musical and theatrical productions.
S
Today, residents and visitors to Baraboo can experience the magic of the Al. Ringling Theatre as it was more than 90 years ago. Concerts on the Square take place Thursday evenings during summer on the courthouse square. The City of Baraboo utilizes a council/manager type of government, including an administrator whose responsibilities include organizing the administrative activities of the city and making all aspects of municipal management more effective. Each of Baraboo’s nine districts are represented by an elected alderperson. The alderpersons and the mayor form the council. The mayor, alderpersons, clerk and treasurer are chosen by the electorate. The Village of West Baraboo utilizes a board of trustees form of government, which is overseen by the village president. The trustees are elected as at-large representatives of the community as a whole. The City of Baraboo maintains its own police department, while the Village of West Baraboo is covered by the Sauk County Sheriff ’s Department. In addition to serving the City of Baraboo, the fire department has a contract with the state to provide building fire protection at Devil’s Lake State Park and neighboring municipalities, such as the Village of West Baraboo; the towns of Baraboo, Fairfield and Greenfield; and a portion of Sumpter.
