Having a population of approximately 8,000, we are nestled near the heart of Escambia County, Alabama, in service as the county seat. An industrial park is utilized by active industries and foresight was applied in the development of the park to have space available for future expansion. Brewton and East Brewton have come a long way from the simple timber towns of years ago. While many of the original buildings and homes remain, there is a new flair to this quaint small town. The year 1861 marked the completion of the railroad in Brewton. While the Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad companies started the race to complete the transcontinental railroad, this southern town began to flourish. Nestled between Burnt Corn and Murder Creeks, lumber was easily sent not only by railcar but also by boat to larger industries where it was marketed elsewhere.

Originally named Newport, the town became official in 1885. The train station agent, Mr. E.T. Bruton, constructed a downtown depot and established his residence. Due to his influence and contributions of his life and work, the Newport settlement was re-named “Brewton” in his honor. With a thriving pine and lumber industry, Brewton became the county seat where retail businesses began to thrive. East Brewton boasts its own historical significance. Incorporated in 1918, the city of East Brewton is home to Fort Crawford, a vital element in a battle that occurred between early settlers and Native American Indians. The battle took place in what is now known as Murder Creek.

Brewton, located in Escambia County, is the county seat and houses the courthouse in the middle of its quaint and historic downtown. People bustle with business from all over the county, and the city easily accommodates the action. Atmore, Flomaton, and East Brewton officials meet in Brewton to discuss and handle the county affairs. Escambia County also has a transit system, which transports residents throughout the city and to different locations in the county for a nominal fee. Brewton is conveniently located within 100 miles of three major southern cities, Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. Just a stoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s throw from Interstate 65, Brewton gives quick access to the major thoroughfare. East Brewton allows its residents to conduct city business inside its own City Hall complex, which houses the City Clerkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office, police and fire departments. County matters can be handled just a short distance away at the courthouse in Brewton. A local airport, on Highway 41 south, accommodates small-engine aircrafts and has a runway length of 5,100 feet. In addition, Pensacola Regional Airport is approximately 50 miles away and gives travelers options to a variety of air carriers. Brewton is also located near several military installations including Pensacola Naval Air Station, Whiting Field in Milton, Florida, and Elgin Air Force Base in Okaloosa County, Florida. And who can forget those beautiful beaches! Brewton gives easy access to some of the most wonderful retreat locations in the country. Brewton and East Brewton provide its residents and visitors with a variety of choices in dining and area attractions. Both cities offer diverse menus for any appetite with a wide assortment of restaurants, ranging from casual to fine dining. Historic downtown offers local establishments open for lunch and dinner, and situated close by are plenty of choices for local shopping. Eateries, which serve up baked goods, barbecue, seafood, Chinese and Mexican dishes, pizza, hamburgers and of course, fast food, are all located throughout the city and are sure to fit any budget. The Dogwood Hills Municipal facility features a golf course, tennis courts, gazebo, children’s playground and a splash pad. The Country Club of Brewton, located on the north side of town, The Ritz, located downtown on the boardwalk, and The Hourglass located downtown, is available as private reception halls. The cities of Brewton and East Brewton also provide rental facilities that are available

for receptions, family reunions or other community events. The City Park is located in the middle of Historic Downtown Brewton. Featuring a clock tower, cascading water fountain, covered gazebo and beautiful landscaping, resident’s can take a stroll during lunch or before the start of a shopping spree in nearby retail venues. Burnt Corn Creek Park, located just across the street from the historic downtown boardwalk, is now fully constructed and runs adjacent to Murder Creek. In addition, a skate park has been constructed for the citizens to enjoy. Also, there is access to the waterway for people to enjoy the water, go for a run or stroll by on a warm summer’s day. The annual Alabama Blueberry Festival is held the third Saturday in June at Burnt Corn Creek Park and a delight for all generations. Brewton is known as the Blueberry Capital of

Alabama and, on this day, everything blueberry can be found. Featuring arts and crafts booths, festival cookbooks, t-shirts, live entertainment, an antique car show, motorcycle show, free children’s section and a delicious food court including fresh blueberries and ice cream, this festival provides entertainment for the whole family. Visitors will be pleased with the accommodations Brewton has to offer, which includes two major hotels. Whatever your budget or ideal home away from home is, Brewton is sure to have what you’re looking for. The Ramada Inn is located directly in the middle of town. The Quality Inn is located on the south side of town and both can easily accommodate business and pleasure travelers. There are also RV parks for our motor home and RV travelers who desire a longer stay.

Affordable living describes Brewton. There are numerous types of housing available at any level and throughout the city. Smaller, traditional neighborhoods abound, as well as newer, private subdivisions such as Juniper Creek and the Country Club estates, where one can build a dream home alongside a beautifully manicured golf course. Apartment complexes and rental properties are also available in Brewton and can accommodate families of any size. Belleville Avenue runs parallel to the main thoroughfare and is home to spectacular, historic residences and beautiful oak trees that line the streets. These stately homes convey memories of families past and present. The old, southern-style architecture is a delight to residents and visitors alike. Senior living of all types is abundant in Brewton. Whether it is a golf course community you are looking for or an assisted living facility, Brewton has what you need. Crepe Myrtle Village is home to seniors that value their independence, while The Meadows is an assisted living home with 16 private bedrooms. There is a registered nurse consultant available, and the facility is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Brewton Arts Council takes great pride in delivering art and culture to Brewton’s residents. Each year, this civic organization solicits playgroups, theater and musical acts from New York and beyond to entertain residents at our own Jefferson Davis Community College’s Woodfin Patterson Auditorium. Local dance and theater instructors organize annual recitals featuring local children and teens performing jazz numbers, ballet and tap, baton, gymnastics as well as dramatic, comedic and musical theater. The community college also houses a wonderful museum in which local residents have contributed artifacts and items that have been retrieved from all over Escambia County. The museum stores and displays these items for all residents and visitors to view and discover our collective history.

The annual Alabama Blueberry Festival is held on the third Saturday in June. Many Brewton residents and thousands of visitors travel from all over the Southeast to enjoy the locally made blueberry treats and live entertainment. Vendors present their handmade arts and crafts, and visitors can view antique automobiles at the car show. Children are also amused and entertained by the mini-train, face painting, pony rides, petting zoo, inflatables, water slides and bungee jump. The city of Brewton hosts the annual Blueberry Drop downtown in Burnt Corn Creek Park every New Year’s Eve to celebrate this festive holiday. Music, dancing and fireworks are all part of the celebration culminating in the lowering of a blueberry cluster as the seconds count down to

midnight. New York’s celebration is no rival for this favorite tradition for local residents. The Fourth of July celebration is hosted by the city of East Brewton. Entertainment, card games, duck races as well as food are provided for revelers, and the day is capped off with a wonderful fireworks display. Throughout the year there are other local events and celebrations such as the annual Christmas Parade, Earth Day and Relay for Life where everyone is invited outdoors for fun and activity. The Brewton Area YMCA provides recreational opportunities for everyone. With an indoor swimming pool, sauna, basketball courts, indoor walking track, weight room and multiple baseball fields, the “Y” accommodates several activities simultaneously throughout the year. Also available for members are aerobics, weight training, yoga, karate and Zumba. In addition to the nursery, which provides daytime child care while adults are enjoying free time, the YMCA boasts one of the best local preschool programs. After-school and summertime programs are also sponsored by the “Y” for children of all ages. Sports teams and classes are held throughout the year. T-ball, soccer, swim instruction, ballet and martial arts are just a few of the

opportunities provided for the young people at the “Y.” The city of Brewton maintains the Dogwood Hills facility, which contains a public golf course, playground, tennis courts and splash pad. The public is welcome to enjoy the outdoors at the fabulous park. The downtown City Park is a wonderful leisure spot and Burnt Corn Creek Park has a beautiful bike path, walking trail and skate park. Sportsman Park, O’Bannon Park and Alco Park are also available for adults and children to enjoy. A pleasant 18-hole golf course is located at the Country Club of Brewton. Designed by the famed Jerry Pate, the golf course is the pride of many Brewton residents. Also available at the Country Club are tennis courts, a swimming pool and play area.

In addition to possessing Fort Crawford Park, the city of East Brewton has three ball fields and four tennis courts. Football is major entertainment in Brewton and East Brewton. The T.R. Miller Tigers and W.S. Neal Eagles provide excellent athletic accomplishments every season. Every Friday night in the fall, the football stadiums are packed with cheering fans. The half-time shows are also a great draw featuring the award-winning T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal High School bands. Both schools boast outstanding athletes in other departments as well, including track, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, volleyball and basketball. Each game or event is an opportunity to be entertained by our local athletes.

Brewton and East Brewton have outstanding educational facilities with longstanding reputations. From preschool to college level, there are opportunities for everyone to broaden their horizons and take advantage of what our institutions have to offer. St. Stephen’s Preschool has an excellent morning program for three-and four-year-old pre-kindergarten children. With a waiting list that forms years in advance, this coveted facility is first-rate. The YMCA maintains a full-day preschool program, as well as afterschool programs for students from age two through sixth grade. With a waiting list of their own, this invaluable facility is vital to the Brewton community.

Brewton Elementary School, Brewton Middle School and T.R. Miller High School in Brewton are exceptional teaching facilities, educating young people in the community. Offering top-of-the-line programs preparing students for the future, these schools receive top honors when recognized by the state. In neighboring East Brewton, W.S. Neal Elementary School, W.S. Students, as well as residents, are able to utilize Brewton’s excellent public library, which takes pride in providing quality literature and computer resources. Another institution, Brewton Career Tech, is one of Escambia County’s most valuable resources. This educational facility provides local high school students with career path options and electives outside of the traditional curricula. The schools curriculum includes business education, health science, masonry, welding, automotive, building construction and child care, and is available to high school students at T.R. Miller, W.S. Neal and Flomaton High Schools. Together, Brewton City Schools and Escambia County Schools are responsible for the education of children in the Brewton area, and they offering many strong opportunities for learning and growth. With highly dedicated educators and instructors, these relatively small schools are able to offer challenging academics and more chances for students to participate in a variety of athletic and extracurricular activities than they might receive at a larger school.

At Jefferson Davis Community College (JDCC), students may complete an associate degree, earn an occupational certificate or earn transfer credits in their quest for a bachelor’s degree. Jefferson Davis also offers a host of continuing education classes for adults and children, as well as customized training for businesses and industries. In addition, adult literacy and GED preparation classes are available, and JDCC serves as a focal point in the community. One of the college’s most popular programs is nursing, which boasts more than 1,500 graduates. The nursing program is fully accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission and has full approval of the Alabama Board of Nursing. Brewton offers a wide variety of retail stores for shoppers. Whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re window shopping or embarking on a shopping spree, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be sure to find whatever you need in Brewton. The city has recruited new retailers, restaurants and financial establishments in an effort to provide Brewton and East Brewton residents with a variety of locations to choose from. Walking along the boardwalk in quaint downtown, one will find clothing boutiques, a jewelry store, beauty salons and gift shops.

Just across the street on Belleville Avenue, patrons will be delighted by an antique retailer as well as a popular outlet store that displays floral arrangements and home accessories. Across the railroad tracks is a trendy florist and local restaurant. In a two-block radius, a shopper can spend all day looking for whatever it is he or she may need or want. Traveling north of town, there is a unique gift store that also specializes in signs and graphics, grocery and home improvement stores, as well as a popular florist and a few other boutiques

owned by local residents that offer charming gifts and accessories. A Walmart Supercenter is located a few miles north in a new shopping complex, along with many other smaller retailers, including an athletics store, nail salon, clothing outlet and discount store. And who can forget the ever-popular curb market in Brewton, where fresh fruits and vegetables are always available. East Brewton has its own collection of restaurants, retailers and a grocery store.

Several types of industry are housed in and around Brewton, including manufacturing companies that specialize in floral, paper, plastic and wood products. Other businesses include foundries, automobile dealers, railcar refurbishers, communications outlets, construction, oil and gas companies, financial institutions, business professionals (accountants, attorneys, insurance companies, real estate), refineries, trucking and economic and industrial development organizations that focus on recruiting new businesses to our area. Whether it’s major industry or small business, Brewton accommodates all types of commerce in its economy, and with a well-equipped industrial park, additional industries will be recruited into the community. The largest industry in Brewton is timber. Whether it’s logging, manufacturing paper products or operating a sawmill, lumber and its products are the major commodities in Brewton. T.R. Miller Mill is the oldest timber company in the area. Making wood products, the company is still operated by the same family who founded the business in the 1800s. GeorgiaPacific is the largest employer in the area, creating over 450 jobs in the community. Paperboard is its main product, and it is shipped all over the country from right here in Brewton. In addition, Swift Companies, Inc. is a locally owned sawmill providing dozens of job opportunities. Natural Decorations, Inc. (NDI) produces artificial plants and is located in the Industrial Park in Brewton. NDI manufactures arrangements, which are sold and shipped all over the world. NDI offers a plant tour, which showcases how their products are made and is a local tourist attraction. The industrial park, which features 160 acres in an “Enterprise Zone,” also houses other local manufacturers. Another major industry in Brewton is Grede. Making ductile castings is their business, they are also a large employer in the community. Frit Car & Equipment Co., Inc. is a local repair shop for railcars. There are many employment opportunities in and around Brewton, and you are sure to find what is right for you and your family. The hospital offers a broad range of services, which include: inpatient care, emergency services, diagnostic and surgical services, outpatient clinics, obstetrics and gynecology services and home health services. The hospital also provides an array of community and professional educational opportunities. The 49-bed facility also offers diagnostic services which include a sleep center, radiology services which include: nuclear medicine, ultrasound, MRI and CT, a full respiratory therapy department and a laboratory which utilizes the latest technology to provide a broad range of diagnostic testing and services. The hospital anticipates starting an $8 million addition/renovation project in early 2013, which will include a new emergency room, renovations to outpatient and radiology areas, and the addition of two new operating rooms in the surgical suite.

Located just across the street is Surgical Associates of South Alabama, which provides surgical services through its two board certified surgeons, who provide high-quality surgical care. West Gate Village, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, has been serving the Greater Brewton area since 1965, and accommodates 129 residents with private and semi-private rooms. Rehabilitative therapies are available to community residents requiring a short-term stay. The professional staff consists of licensed physicians and registered nursing specialists providing quality care 24 hours a day. The Meadows, which is an assisted living facility, is just across the street and is able to

accommodate even more residents. Home health and hospice services are also available for those in need. Located next door to the Brewton Medical Center, the Escambia County Health Department provides high-quality and professional services to the public. The cities of Brewton and East Brewton are each governed by a mayor and city council that meet at their respective City Halls to discuss matters and issues pertaining to our community. Escambia County is governed by a county commission and Brewton, being the largest municipality in the county, is the county seat. The other municipalities in Escambia County are East Brewton, Flomaton, Riverview, Pollard and Atmore.

The department has three large-volume pumpers housed in a central location on St. Nicholas Avenue behind historic Belleville Avenue and one housed at the airport. In addition, the county has nearly 20 volunteer fire departments in the area. services in addition to helicopter capabilities, Brewton’s emergency system is extremely capable. East Brewton has a police department with four full-time officers and one part-time on duty led by its own Chief of Police. The fire department has four full-time firefighters and 25 volunteers. The department has two trucks, one tanker and a van, and is manned 24 hours a day to handle emergencies in East Brewton.

Brewton and East Brewton provide their residents with quality residential services, including water, gas and trash pick-up. The Utilities and Public Works departments supervise and maintain all aspects of Brewton’s appearance, including street maintenance, drainage and pipe reparations, landscaping and beautification projects. Currently, Brewton’s police department has 28 officers on duty. The Chief of Police and his staff are always on hand to handle any situation that may arise. The fire department is

Brewton is home to several denominations and has many historic churches that are an important part of city life. There are nearly 60 churches in the city and surrounding area, including Protestant, Catholic and Pentecostal places to worship. Driving down Belleville Avenue, residents may attend churches in or close to downtown. Many other churches are located in quaint neighborhoods and have that good, old-town feel. Maintained by their parishes, these old buildings are magnificent in architecture and lively places to worship.

Many community activities are organized by the churches in Brewton and East Brewton, bringing together people and visitors from all walks of life. These churches also have multiple youth and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs, which offer another form of recreation for the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young people. Some churches have a midweek service with an informal dinner, which provides an opportunity for members to gather and worship, and many churchgoers are involved in volunteer efforts in our community.

Civic organizations in Brewton help support the community through fundraisers, volunteer programs and activities. The Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Civic League, Sportsman Club, Brewton Council of the Arts, the United Fund, Relay for Life and Escambia County Habitat for Humanity are just a few organizations that are dynamic and extremely involved in Brewton affairs and strive to make a difference in the lives of our residents.
