OVERVIEW
at a elebrated for its vibrant, growing arts scene, wonderful fusion of charming shops and trendy restaurants tucked away in aesthetically pleasing historic structures, Cedarburg is a city you’ll never tire of exploring. It is a true haven for those seeking a beautiful place in which to reside and work.
C
Upon falling in love with the tranquil, picturesque countryside that bordered Cedar Creek in the early 1840s, a group of German and Irish settlers established the community of Cedarburg. While the city developed and prospered, it retained the original charm on which it was founded. Careful preservation of many structures representing the area’s bygone days is a major commitment and source of pride among the entire community of Cedarburg. As a result of heedful maintenance to Cedarburg’s early edifices, its historic downtown accurately reflects the lifestyle experienced more than a century ago. Cedarburg possesses two distinct districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which together encompass well over 200 buildings of historical significance. Nestled within the heart of the city, these structures continue to exist as shops, restaurants, homes, museums and public buildings, providing a focal point for the community’s daily way of life. The town of Cedarburg, a historically rural community located in a rapidly developing portion of Ozaukee County, claims an additional historic district listed on the national register, known as the Hamilton Historic District.

Today, with a population reaching nearly 11,500 in the city and an additional 6,000 residents in the town, Cedarburg offers the best in small-town American life, yet is large enough to offer the modern amenities of a 21st-century, contemporary city. And the metropolitan attractions of Milwaukee are only minutes away.

Cedarburg’s leaders have developed a long-range plan for economic expansion to ensure structured growth. Simultaneously, the community remains steadfast in the protection of the environment and the preservation of Cedarburg’s historical essence, while the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce persists in its commitment to foster healthy economic growth that will provide residents with an appealing environment in which to live and work, now and into the future.

A CIVIC-MINDED COMMUNITY
that contribute charitable support to a legion of worthy causes.
orresponding with its endeavors to encourage a thriving business and residential ambiance, Cedarburg is a community that takes care of its own. In spite of the fact that Cedarburg is a relatively small community, the area is teeming with a variety of nonprofit organizations that contribute greatly toward the overall wellbeing of its residents. Significant entities, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters (offers ongoing guidance to needy youths), COPE Services (maintains a 24-hour telephone hotline serving those in need of emotional support) and Family Sharing of Ozaukee County (operating a community food pantry), are just a few of the many groups that afford unwavering assistance to those in need.
C
A more recent prominent organization that merits mention is the Greater Cedarburg Foundation, an affiliate of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. This was created to stimulate and advance private funding in support of artistic, cultural and community service initiatives and programs that are conducive to enhancing the vitality of the greater Cedarburg community. Festivals of Cedarburg Inc., also a nonprofit organization, has brought the city national and regional recognition through its four popular annual festivals. Festivals of Cedarburg provides grants for other area nonprofit groups, while serving to ensure the economic health and vitality of Cedarburg’s downtown historic district. Keeping a watchful eye on the animal population, the Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus in Saukville cares for 4,000 animals every year and offers a variety of programs and services for Cedarburg residents. The humane society is a nonprofit organization that has been a part of the community for more than 30 years; it is not affiliated with any national animal welfare groups and depends on community support.
Then there’s the Cedarburg Community Scholarship Fund, which was designed to promote continuing educational support, and the Cedarburg Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that was created in January 2006. The CEF provides a means for schools, individuals and businesses to work together to help students achieve their potential by providing grants and additional funding for special projects geared toward enhancing academic achievement. In addition, there are other groups such as the Cedarburg Lions, the Cedarburg Junior Woman’s Club, the Cedarburg Woman’s Club and the Cedarburg-Grafton Rotary Club

HISTORY
on the
T
Exploring Cedarburg is like stepping back in time, many of the limestone and cream city brick buildings remain unaltered. The dedication to preserving these historic edifices was a catalyst in the enactment of a comprehensive landmarks ordinance and the establishment of a landmarks commission to protect the city’s architectural heritage.
he initial German and Irish settlers of Cedarburg were enticed by the power-producing potential of Cedar Creek; a feature that ultimately led to the establishment of the village in the early 1840s.
Ludwig Groth was the first recorded settler of Cedarburg, making his home near the creek in 1842. Two years later, Frederick Hilgen and William Schroeder purchased a tract of land from Groth and established a grist mill, which remains a distinguished element of today’s Cedarburg skyline.
Thanks to the efforts of the Landmarks Commission and Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce, in the mid-1980s Cedarburg’s downtown Washington Avenue area was designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. Adjacent to the downtown area is the Columbia Road Historic District, which was listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places in 1992.
Four additional dams and mills were constructed in the following years, centralizing the life of the fledgling town along the banks of Cedar Creek. Built in 1864, the Wittenberg Mill stood as the sole woolen mill west of Philadelphia to produce worsted yarns. The mill’s buildings still stand today, forming the historic Cedar Creek Settlement, featuring charming shops, dining establishments, artists’ studios and a flourishing winery.
The Ozaukee County Historical Society is headquartered in the lovingly restored Interurban Depot building where a vast selection of fascinating materials is available for examination onsite by genealogists, students, researchers and other interested parties.
The coming of the railroad to Cedarburg in 1870 stimulated further growth and prosperity. The developing town continued to draw in crowds of visitors and business travelers, prompting local businessmen to open hotels in order to accommodate this influx of people. Many of the buildings that were erected during this time – churches, homes, mills, taverns and businesses – were constructed utilizing Niagara limestone from two local quarries, a characteristic that may still be viewed to this day, thanks to Cedarburg’s dedication to preserving historical structures.

By 1885, the emerging town’s population had swelled to 1,500, resulting in the incorporation of what is now Ozaukee County. As the community continued to grow and prosper, Cedar Creek was further employed to power lumber and flour mills, a nail factory and a brewery.

TOURISM
ith a beautifully preserved downtown district bursting with an eclectic selection of specialty boutiques, trendy restaurants, sensuous spas, museums and historic inns, Cedarburg is a wonderful place to spend a day, weekend or a lifetime. Add a burgeoning arts community and a full calendar of festivals, entertainment and special events, it’s no wonder visitors consistently rank Cedarburg as one of Wisconsin’s best-loved, small-town destinations.
Farmhouse opened officially in August 2011 and features a variety of styles of quilts and fiber arts in rotating, themed exhibits. In addition to an assortment of activities, the museum hosts trunk shows, historical farm tours, lectures, private guided tours of the exhibitions and special events.

Operated by the Cedarburg Cultural Center, the 1849 Kuhefuss House Museum on Washington Avenue is recognized as being one of the oldest and most significant residences in Cedarburg. The home is filled with an extensive collection of family photographs and historical items. Tours are offered to visitors during the summertime and also during special events.
Take a step back in time as you stroll through historic Cedarburg. Boasting more than 200 historically notable properties, not only did Cedarburg earn first place in the “Most Distinctive Architecture” category in the online Wonders of Wisconsin contest, but also in 2011 Cedarburg was honored by Forbes as “one of the prettiest towns in America.”
The General Store Museum is found within a restored 1860s-era framed structure in Cedarburg’s main National Historic District. In the style of an old-time general store, the museum displays the Roger C. Christensen Collection of antique advertising art and packaging – one of the largest in the Midwest – from the early 1900s through the 1940s, including many Depression-era items. While the Cedarburg Cultural Center oversees the collection, the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce operates out of the building as well and coordinates the on-site Cedarburg Visitors Center.
Many of the ornate limestone and brick buildings that line Washington Avenue downtown remind one of the community’s bygone days as the more than 100 structures, originally constructed in the 19th century, still stand virtually unscathed. But these early buildings are not museum pieces; they are the center of community life and house a variety of Cedarburg’s businesses, specialty shops and dining establishments.
In addition to its array of historical sites and museums, Cedarburg is known for its fun-filled, family friendly festivals which bring in thousands of tourists annually. The Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual spring Sip, Shop & Stroll (Ladies’ Night Out), the annual Fourth of July Hometown Celebration, the Christmas treelighting ceremony and a business showcase. Each year, the chamber also coordinates the Friday Farmers Market, which is filled with fresh produce, flowers, plants, handcrafted items and baked goods, and operates from mid-June through the end of October.
Neighboring the downtown district is the Columbia Road Historic District, which is composed of nearly 130 noteworthy historic structures. Additionally, the town of Cedarburg is home to one of Wisconsin’s few remaining covered bridges. The 1840s community of Hamilton, reachable just one mile south of downtown, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is brimming with a host of charming stone structures. Recent restoration was completed in and around the historic Interurban Depot, which once served rail commuters. This rehabilitation transformed the depot, now the Hazel Wirth Center, into the new home of the Ozaukee County Historical Society.
Presented four times a year in Firemen’s Park by the Cedarburg Fire Department, the ever-popular Maxwell Street Days invites bargain seekers to peruse through approximately 800 vendor spaces, replete with antiques, collectibles and crafts.
The well-maintained Hoffman/Boeker Farmstead, dating back to 1875, has been transformed into the stunning Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts. In 2001, the Wisconsin Quilt History Project purchased the farmstead to establish a museum celebrating American quilts and fiber arts. The new museum at the Stone

costumed bed races across frozen Cedar Creek. There is also a Chili Contest, a parade, Pancake Breakfast, Cool Brew Beer Tasting, dog weight-pulling contest and a variety of other activities and events. Summertime fun in Cedarburg celebrates the strawberry. Held the fourth weekend in June, Strawberry Festival is all about the “Arts on the Avenue” arts and crafts shows, the Plein Air Painting Competition and, of course, everything strawberry, including Cedar Creek Winery’s Strawberry Blush wine and every strawberry delicacy conceivable. Live music is offered throughout town, while families cheer on the Duck Races on Cedar Creek and strawberry contests at Cedar Creek Settlement.
And finally, visitors to Cedarburg in search of a comfortable place to rest their heads will find casual elegance and historic tradition that is hard to resist when staying at two charming bed-and-breakfast inns located in historic downtown. For those in search of family friendly accommodations, the area also offers a fine variety of modern hotels located just a few miles away. “A Cedarburg Christmas – Everyone’s Home for the Holidays” was launched in 2011 to showcase the many enticing Christmas events traditionally held in Cedarburg starting in mid-November through the year’s end. Shoppers strolling through Washington Avenue’s Historic District will be enchanted by the nearly 100 unique shops decorated with holiday flair and framed with thousands of twinkling holiday lights. No holiday visit to Cedarburg would be complete without a stop at the adorable little jewel of a gingerbread house that graces the lawn of Cedarburg City Hall and beckons one to take a peek in the windows or enjoy a family visit with Santa. Details of upcoming holiday events may be found yearround by visiting the Cedarburg Christmas website at www.cedarburgchristmas.com.
Beautiful autumn weather regularly ushers in the annual Wine & Harvest Festival during the third weekend in September. The colorful weekend is loaded with the bounty of fall: a Farmers Market, “Arts on the Avenue,” Cedar Creek Winery’s award-winning wines, a Scarecrow Contest, Giant Pumpkin Regatta, live bands, food courts, grape stomping, hayrides and colorful exhibits at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts.

edarburg’s delightful shopping selections have long been considered one of its biggest draws. Indeed, the city earned first place in the online Wonders of Wisconsin contest in the “best shopping” category. And in 2011, Midwest Living Magazine named Cedarburg one of the Midwest’s “six best holiday shopping towns.”
handcrafted items and gifts. A number of these businesses remind one of a simpler era with the presence of a turn-of-the-century jewelry store, three popular confectionaries (one featuring oldtime, handmade specialty candies), a store specializing in old-fashioned cookie cutters and much more. However, Cedarburg is not just about antiques, as newer additions have been made to the shopping area. Stylish specialty products and unique offerings not commonly found elsewhere blend in seamlessly with existing stores. Spend time watching talented glassblowers at work, sample a selection of delicious oils at the gourmet oil store or discover your “inner child” at the city’s new toy store that specializes in hand-crafted items by local artisans.
Tucked away in the heart of downtown Cedarburg is the scenic Washington Avenue Historic District, which provides a charming backdrop for a day or weekend stay of shopping and exploration. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the district’s chic restaurants and quaint shops are nestled within stunning historic buildings, and offer a wonderful mix of modern conveniences in an old-time atmosphere.
In addition to the many wonderful specialty boutiques, Cedarburg’s bustling arts scene is exceptionally well represented downtown, art lovers will enjoy visiting a variety of galleries and studios showcasing works by talented local artists. The Cedarburg Artists Guild, a vital source in the arts community for nearly 30 years, currently boasts an impressive 220 members … yet another reason why the city has earned a reputation as a thriving artists’ community. Take the time to stroll through the Ozaukee Art Center/Brewery Works Art Complex, located in one of the state’s oldest breweries, or wander among the many exhibits and workshops representing most media at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. In October, art enthusiasts flock to the area for the annual Covered Bridge Studio Tour where visitors are invited into the artists’ home studios.
Additional shopping opportunities may be discovered at the Cedar Creek Settlement, a restored 1864 woolen mill listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Open year round, patrons are invited to take advantage of the delightful offerings found in more than 20 shops, artists’ studios and restaurants, not to mention the flavorful tastes found in the local Cedar Creek Winery visitors will enjoy touring the winery and sampling delicous, award-winning Wisconsin wines.
