Protecting Your Skin THIS SUMMER By Dr. Jennifer S. Young

ith the warmer months approaching, many of us will be spending more time outdoors enjoying the weather. Something important to keep in mind when we go outside is protecting our skin from the sun. The sun emits powerful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage our skin causing wrinkles, skin color changes, sunburn, and possibly skin cancer. The best way to protect our skin is to avoid sun exposure. The sun’s rays are strongest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. so try to stay in the shade during these hours if you must be outside. Wear protective gear such as wide brim hats, long sleeved shirts, pants, and sunglasses (UV rays can also damage our eyes and cause cataracts). Any exposed skin areas should be covered with sunscreen. At least one ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) of sunscreen should be used to protect exposed areas for the average adult. Sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes prior to sun exposure to allow time for adequate absorption. Keep in mind that even if it is a cloudy day, UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds and damage your skin so sun protection should be on during day hours if you are outside. How do sunscreens work? They contain inorganic ingredients, such as zinc oxide or titanium oxide, which scatter ultraviolet radiation. They also contain organic ingredients, such as octyl methoxycinnamate or oxybenzone, which absorb UV radiation and then dissipate it as heat. When selecting your sunscreen you should use one that is broad spectrum with at least SPF 30 and water-resistant. Broad spectrum indicates coverage against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the two harmful rays emitted by the sun. UVA causes wrinkles and age spots and can pass through window glass. UVB is responsible for sunburn and is blocked by window glass. SPF (sun protection factor) indicates the ability of a sunscreen to block UVB rays. The SPF number indicates the amount of time you can spend in the sun before getting sunburn. So for instance if you normally burn spending 10 minutes in the sun, wearing a sunscreen with SPF 15 would let you stay out in the sun 150 minutes (15 times longer) without getting sunburned. There are currently no ratings for UVA but look for the “broad spectrum” label to ensure UVA coverage.

Bottles labeled “sunblock” and “waterproof” are considered outdated labeling by the FDA. There are no sunscreens that block UV rays 100 percent; most of them block about 97 percent of UV rays. No sunscreen is waterproof, as all of them will wear off with time. Depending on the type of sunscreen you have, you should reapply your sunscreen every two hours and sooner if you have been swimming or have been sweating excessively. Sunscreens that are water resistant will indicate how long they will last (either 40 minutes or 80 minutes). Do not use sunscreen that has expired as the ingredients in these products may no longer be active and will not be effective in providing you sun protection. If the bottle has no expiration date, look for a change in color or consistency. These are a good indicator that it may be time to throw out that sunscreen. Keep in mind children under 6 months old should not use sunscreen and their best defense against the sun is to avoid exposure altogether using shade, clothing, and hats. Infants have skin that is less matured as well as a higher surface area to body weight ratio compared to adults. Both these factors increase infants’ exposure to the chemicals in sunscreens and thus increases their risks from the side effects of these chemicals. The most common side effects of sunscreens are redness and irritation of the skin. If this occurs, you should wash off the sunscreen immediately and choose a different type of sunscreen. In general, studies have shown that the benefits of wearing sunscreen for sun protection outweigh the risk of side effects that one may experience from sunscreens. If you develop any skin lesions that appear suspicious, see your physician immediately. Since treatment for skin cancer is more effective the earlier it is detected, staying

 There are many different types of sunscreens and choosing one will be based on your preference.  Creams are best for dry skin and the face.  Gels are good for hairy areas such as the scalp.  Sticks are good for the eye area.  Lip balms with SPF are helpful for protecting the lips.  Spray sunscreens allow for quick and convenient application but keep in mind not to inhale the product while spraying and do not spray near open flames, heat, or while smoking. overnment programs for veterans at the federal, state and local levels are rarely sufficient to provide the full spectrum of services that our military heroes require, have so rightly earned and were promised when they signed a blank check to this country. Where the government leaves off, the private sector must step in and take the reins. Gold Coast Veterans Foundation (GCVF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was established in 2010 precisely for this purpose. Developing new programs and services as well as enhancing existing ones, GCVF has quickly become a local resource for the 40,000-plus veterans living in Ventura County and supports the 19,000-plus personnel in the military community working at Naval Base Ventura County.

Founders Ron and Lisa Greenwood originally started to support the establishment of a Veterans Court in Ventura County to focus on providing troubled combat veterans treatment vice incarceration. By supporting the veterans’ treatment court they provide participants a new beginning and the second chance at life that this country owes the veterans who volunteered so much in service. With up to 30 percent of returning veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns suffering combat-related stress disorders, this is an enormously important initiative. Other early accomplishments included working closely with local officials and CalVet to bring a Veterans Home of California to Ventura County. These efforts directly contributed to making such programs a reality for our local veterans, and GCVF continuously seeks out new ways to assist Ventura County veterans in need. Always actively seeking to enhance the quality of life of our local heroes, the Foundation opened the GCVF Veterans Connection in 2013. This one-stop-shop provides support for local government agencies, nonprofits and volunteer veteran service providers by connecting local veterans to services, programs and opportunities they deserve and so desperately need. Many veterans have difficulty navigating the labyrinth of government organizations providing veteran services. The Veterans Connection works to break down the barriers veterans encounter while trying to access their benefits and guide them through the process of claiming their earned benefits. Open five days a week in Camarillo, California, staff and volunteers who are experienced at working with government representatives expedite the daunting tasks that veterans are faced with when filing claims. In the case when a veteran or family member simply does not qualify for government benefits, GCVF refers them to a network of

nonprofit organizations that offer alternative programs, many of which are available at no cost. While aiding in the application process for the benefits provided by the V.A., the Veterans Connection fulfills many needs outside of government benefits. Working with local officials, the foundation assists homeless veterans with locating affordable housing or finding viable means of transportation. It also offers support to veterans’ families, assisting surviving spouses in their time of mourning by arranging military honors at a funeral service or connecting them with various survivor benefits. To aid transition to the civilian life, GCVF encourages the pursuit of higher education and skills by providing résumé reviews, job referrals, information on local colleges and universities and how to best utilize their educational benefits. Seminars like the “Back to School Boot Camp” are offered, as well as continued dedication and support to local university and college veteran resource centers. GCVF also maintains an online calendar of community events and activities tailored specifically for local veterans on its website. The community as a whole benefits when it acknowledges and supports its veterans, their families and the sacrifices they have endured serving this country. Veterans have demonstrated the willingness to self-sacrifice for the greater cause, and there’s something to be learned from their honor, courage and commitment to protecting our freedom. This community will not forget those who offered the ultimate sacrifice, and GCVF will continue to partner with other local veteran organizations to conduct meaningful veterans’ ceremonies on special days of reverence like the Fourth of July, Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. The foundation considers itself fortunate to be co-located in the collaborative environment created at the Ventura County Community Foundation building. A close relationship with the Community Foundation led to the Ventura County Veterans Fund which helps veterans returning to Ventura County to cope with what they have experienced and successfully transition back to civilian life. INNOVATION-BASED ECONOMY IS HERE

os Angeles is the fastest-growing tech startup region in the country based on the number of companies started and the third largest technology ecosystem. In fact, according to a recent report by the LA Economic Development Council2, more people are employed in hi-tech jobs in L.A. than any other metro region in the U.S, accounting for 9 percent of all jobs and contributing $108.3 billion to the region’s GDP3. This technology renaissance did not happen by accident. It is the result of combining resources between the City of Los Angeles, universities, the business community and technology companies.

With this economic boom happening just beyond our borders, how can the Conejo Valley play a role in fostering high technology economic growth in our region? The Conejo Valley boasts an incredible quality of life, top-notch schools, a strong bio-technology sector, as well as being home to many regional corporate headquarters, forward-looking universities and an educated workforce. Taking these assets and converting them into drivers of a technology ecosystem is now a focus of the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber. The Chamber, along with partners such as Verizon, sought advice from local tech entrepreneurs and investors on what is needed to cultivate a thriving tech scene and encourage people to invest their time and money here in Conejo Valley. The result has been the creation of Ignite Conejo Valley (or IgniteCV). This initiative seeks to provide resources to the start-up community and be a connector for government, the business and education communities, and individual entrepreneurs looking for resources to get started on their ventures.

Technology fosters innovation, creates jobs and boosts long‐term economic prosperity. Information technology represents an infrastructure issue as important as bridges, highways, dams and buildings whereby the digital goods of the 21st century move. Although the Conejo Valley is served by Verizon’s fiber optic network, FiOS, and a handful of other companies for Internet service, wireless service gaps still exist in many parts of the region. 4G LTE and future iterations of mobile broadband technology are becoming the backbone to voice and data communications. According to a Center for Disease Control study on wireless substitution, 4 in 10 households are wireless only and 10 percent of Americans use the Internet strictly through a mobile device. If we want to become a premier region for establishing a tech company, wireless service needs to be robust and ubiquitous. A partnership with area cities to streamline the approval process to get wireless upgrade projects built and online is key.

“This effort to create a vibrant tech ecosystem is in line with what this Chamber has always stood for: to support and help grow businesses,” said Jill Lederer, President & CEO of the Chamber. “With IgniteCV, we needed to pivot and create an initiative that resonates with young entrepreneurs as well as start-ups looking for a place to call home.” Every community is different and there is no one blueprint for success. However, after many discussions, IgniteCV has come up with these five strategies that will foster a thriving technology sector.

These are not your typical chief information officer positions which ensure that a city’s technology systems are working. A CTO is a visionary, has private sector experience and can bridge the gap between both a local government’s and tech sector’s assets and limitations. A CTO can advise a city on current technological trends and position that city at the forefront of innovation. Building a “Smart City” and creating an innovative civic engagement platform are strategies that a CTO can bring to the table.

Entrepreneurs need spaces to work, create, make and collaborate. The creation of co-working spaces, markerspaces and wet labs are critical to fostering innovation. “I can count with one hand the number of co-working spaces and labs in the Conejo Valley. These facilities are necessary to allow these entities to sprout up and grow,” says Alon Goren, a Newbury Park native and co-founder of Investedin, a crowdfunding platform. 

Stop the “Brain Drain” and tap into the educational community’s assets Our youth account for 25 percent of our population, but 100 percent of our future. Without an economic and cultural environment that affords them opportunities to work for and/ or establish their own start-up ventures, many flee to Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, or the East Coast looking for opportunities. Stanford University is an integral player in Silicon Valley and UCLA and USC have a strong presence in the L.A. tech scene. Locally, California Lutheran University is leading the effort to create a tech start-up culture with the opening of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Huddle Campus, a co-working space in Westlake Village. Gerhard Apfelthaler, Dean of the School of Management at CLU and visionary behind Huddle Campus, understands the effect that brain drain can have. “A tech start-up sector can be an incredible economic engine and young millennials are best positioned to create the companies that will serve as fuel for this engine. They are early adopters of technology trends and are keen on using technology to find a solution to everything. Losing our local kids to another region is an incredible loss.” Our school districts and the students they graduate are exceptionally successful. But it can never be enough. STEM

programs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and entrepreneurial education must be an enormous focus in our classrooms. All our middle schools and high schools must be able to compete with schools in China and India that are graduating students in STEM at enormous rates. Students should not only test well but should use that classroom education to solve problems by conceptualizing, creating, and building solutions with the engineering and entrepreneurial skills they have acquired.

Leverage what we’re good at

The Conejo Valley is already home to a robust biotech community. With pharmaceutical giants such as Amgen and Baxalta US Inc., as well as a plethora of small-to-medium sized ones, both start-ups and established, the Conejo Valley is already a recognized biotech powerhouse. This has become so true that “Codon Corridor” is becoming a common nickname of our neck of the U.S. 101. Like any large industry, biotechnology relies on a great number of other inputs, many from different technology fields. The benefit of a thriving local biotech start-up scene would involve the acceleration of biotech innovation, particularly for the larger well-established firms as they seek licensing deals and outside R&D. Success begets success and wealth creates more wealth. As companies grow and become successful, its cofounders may exit and invest in other local ventures and in turn those companies hire more employees and grow. This cycle attracts outside venture capital and skilled employees, and the cycle repeats. Employing some of these strategies creates ripples of success that can result in a thriving economic and technological hub in the Conejo Valley. This is the goal of IgniteCV.

ConejoView: Please tell us a little about yourself. Ellen Chen: I come to the restaurant business from a nontraditional background. I earned a degree in economics and went to work for Anderson Consulting. I wanted to do something more creative so I moved into marketing, working for a small online marketing company that was acquired by Electronic Arts. After that, I was fortunate enough to take some time off and that’s how I met Mario (del Pero) who, at the time, was exploring a fast-casual teriyaki concept. I loved this entrepreneurial concept and asked him if I could work with him; I told him “I’ll do anything: tech, the register, whatever needs to be done.” I asked him if he minded if I dabbled some more to clean things up with the business; we got married and Mendocino farms was born.

CV: Where did the Mendocino Farms concept come from? EC: Mario is a visionary and I have the business background, but

we’re both passionate about food. We felt there was a gap in the market for a better sandwich category so when we sold our teriyaki business, we decided to focus on solely that. The name itself came as a tribute to Mendocino County which is known for its sustainable farming. As that’s our approach to food, we felt it was the perfect fit!

CV: You have had great success; what made you choose the Conejo Valley?

EC: We started out with an urban location in downtown Los Angeles in a failed Starbucks location. As we’ve grown, we still

have three downtown locations but we wanted to be that place that’s part of the neighborhood. Thousand Oaks was a natural progression. We wanted to be a gathering place for a suburban market and be in a transactional center where people come and live their lives. The choice of the Conejo Valley was totally correct and has exceeded our expectations. We also have stores in Sherman Oaks and Costa Mesa, but I think this is as far north as we’ll go. We’ll be opening soon in Irvine. We do a lot of catering, as well, and have two catering specialists in each store.

CV: You have many incredibly creative design features in the restaurant. Can you tell us how they came about?

EC: We have a local designer, Eddie Bitton, but we also work with a lot of other designers to make sure each location has the look and feel of the neighborhood we’re in. Mario and I maybe have too much input (laughing). Our style is a little irreverent and quirky, but we always try to work with local artisans and use locally sourced products where possible.

CV: Who do you consider your competitors? EC: There are such great players in this niche market but we embrace the synergy; it pushes all of us to introduce great healthful food. All ships rise with high tides.

CV: At the end of the day ... EC: … we want you to eat happy.

Synergy Business Connections This networking group is known for its contagiously optimistic and lively environment. The open forum structure of the group encourages every member to contribute to the conversation making the room buzz with energy. A unique feature of this group is their “Troika’s” (coffee meetings) of two to three members that are assigned and must be completed before the next meeting. These Troika’s are designed to help members develop meaningful business relationships with each other in a more personal setting. Debbie Soden’s advertising and marketing background plays a huge role in how she assists each member find connections and gain valuable referrals. Synergy is also known for hosting networking mixers and for their charitable donations to helping youth in our community. Meets every 1st and 3rd Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Chamber Conference Room.

Young Professionals Networking Group

Business Breakfast Network (BNN)

The Young Professionals Networking Group is dedicated to business professionals under the age of 40. Each meeting has a featured speaker, providing each member with a deeper insight about their business. The group is supportive and encourages collaboration and input of ideas. Each meeting ends with testimonials, where members can discuss the ways in which they have used and benefited from one another’s services. This develops a great deal of respect for each individual’s profession and the diversity of their group leads to an environment that promotes learning on both personal and professional level.

Founded in 2002, BBN is one of the Chambers longest standing networking groups. This group consists of many loyal members, some of whom have been part of the group for nearly 13 years. Members strive to promote one another to friends, family, clients and co-workers. There is even a referral contest and incentive program for new members. When you attend a meeting it’s clear to see the strong bond members have developed with each other and their warm and welcoming approach will make you feel immediately a part of the group. The meetings are informative, full of humor and very educational. One of the biggest strengths of BBN is their presentations; you will always walk away from this group learning something new and relevant.

The vibe, format and structure of each of these groups are unique and designed to cater to different business and individual needs. GIFT for Women Preferred Referral Alliance (PRA) When you attend PRA for your first meeting you will be treated to a complimentary breakfast, a welcoming environment and will gain valuable information from an in-depth presentation. The members of PRA encourage collaboration of ideas, assist one another when faced with challenges and are supportive of one another's successes. This dynamic group excels at building relationships and creating an atmosphere that is inviting. The group spends the time to get to know their members by asking questions about each individual’s background, family, history and areas of interest. By getting to know one another on a deeper level, the members have a great sense of trust and loyalty to the group and feel confident in making business referrals.

Social Network Social Network is one of the Chamber’s newest networking groups which was established earlier this year. The group is as it sounds, a chance to socialize and network with like-minded business professionals. Joe believes that if you build relationships and get to know one another on a personal level, then business will naturally follow. The group is calm and inviting and focuses on creating an environment where people can be their authentic selves and make those lasting connections.

GIFT for Women is a supportive and empowering group that brings together women of all ages and cultures who are going through different transitions in their lives. When you walk through the door to your first meeting at GIFT you will immediately get a sense of unification. Everyone is friendly and kind making it a very safe and encouraging environment. Before the meeting begins, guests are encouraged to help themselves to the free and delicious lunch that is provided. Each meeting features an inspirational speaker who will share their background, life experiences, challenges and successes. Some of the past speakers have included Risa Gruberger, M.F.T., Thousand Oaks Councilmember Claudia Bill-de la Pena and Jill Lederer President/CEO or the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce. After attending a GIFT meeting you will have the feeling of hope, optimism, purpose and a greater connection to the inspirational women in our community.
