The Lebanon area offers a variety of fine restaurants, interesting museums, art galleries and health and fitness facilities, all within five minutes of downtown Lebanon. We are proud to say that we have two ski areas, Storrs Hill, run by the Outing Club of Lebanon, and Whaleback Ski Area run by a local non-profit organization. There are various lakes for sailing and boating, many trails for all kinds of walking and hiking, and fishing on the many streams and rivers – all nearby. It also boasts of a rail to trails that goes from Lebanon to Concord, New Hampshire for bikers and hikers. Soon the trail will go to the Connecticut River.

The City of Lebanon is fortunate to be nestled snugly in the Connecticut River’s Upper Valley, at the Vermont/ New Hampshire crossroads of Interstate highways 89 and 91 – thus we have become known as “The Crossroads of New England.” Our logo at the top of this page illustrates this fact. We are also at the confluence of two rivers, with railroads, air travel and bus service all converging here in this area of the Upper Valley.

In his book “Boomtown USA: The 7½ Keys to Big Success in Small Towns,” Jack Schultz coined the word “agurb” to define a city of less than 20,000 that is set in a rural area, experiences six-percent growth

each year and offers full services to its residents. Lebanon was one of only three cities in New England to be designated as such. In the June 2015 issue of Livability Magazine, Lebanon was listed as the best city in the United States to live in. This is due to its way of life, schools, parks and engaging residents.

Searching the Past

HISTORY

Lebanon celebrated its 250th Anniversary in 2011 with a variety of activities commemorating this milestone throughout the year. The original charter was signed by the Royal Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, July 4, 1761. On the same day, Governor Wentworth signed a total of 13 charters for towns along both sides of the Connecticut River – towns that today make up what is called “The Upper Valley.”

By the mid-1760s, settlers, mostly from Connecticut, were quickly turning the wilderness into a settled community. The home of Lebanon’s first resident physician, Dr. Ziba Hall, still stands, and is the oldest known surviving structure in the city. Built in 1766, the house is now called the Dana House and has been moved from its original location to Seminary Hill, where it is being meticulously restored.

From the beginning, the Connecticut and Mascoma Rivers provided transportation routes and waterpower for mills producing products such as textiles, leather goods and excelsior. With the evolution of the railroads along the waterways and their direct route to Boston, the mills flourished, becoming Lebanon’s greatest source of employment, along with the rail industry itself as a close second for nearly 150 years. The tannery and textile mills continued as Lebanon’s primary employers until the late 1950s. By that time, foreign imports were taking their toll and the local economy had to diversify and modernize, embracing cleaner and more advanced technologies. As a result, Lebanon is now home to many high-tech enterprises, building products and service providers in the areas of computer software, biotechnology, aerospace ball bearings, plasma cutting, geographic data

and much more. The city is also home to Northern New England’s largest medical facility, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the nationally acclaimed Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Looking beyond business and commerce, the city’s history is rich and varied. In 1778, Lebanon seceded from New Hampshire to become part of Vermont due to a bitter dispute with the New Hampshire legislature. The quarrel was settled four years later in 1782, and Lebanon returned to its New Hampshire roots. Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, resided in West Lebanon as a young boy between the years of 1811 and 1813. And the year 1862 saw the beginning of a heavy migration of French Canadians who came both to work in the mills and to enjoy the prosperity of the United States; their influence is a rich part of Lebanon’s cultural history. As a town, Lebanon survived a catastrophic fire in 1887, and the Flood of 1936, known as the most devastating tributary flood in the history of the Connecticut River. As a city, Lebanon survived another disastrous fire in 1964 that left the center of the business community in ruins and led to the current downtown revitalization. The Lebanon Historical Society has been active in collecting, maintaining and recording the city’s heritage. The most recent history (covering 1761-1994) is a book written by Lebanon resident Roger Carroll and is available at the Chamber office. ■

Transportation

LOCATION &

Lebanon is the largest of the Upper Valley communities with approximately 13,500 people – and the only city – in the Upper Valley. It serves as the core shopping area for a regional population of between 30,000 and 40,000, having both a downtown (Lebanon) and an area of commerce (West Lebanon) just off I-89. On the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River, Lebanon is bordered by the towns of Enfield, Plainfield and Hanover (home to Dartmouth College). On the Vermont side of the river is the Town of Hartford, which includes the Village of White River Junction.

Public transportation is readily available. Dartmouth Coach is based in Lebanon with state-of-the-art buses making several round trips each day to downtown Boston, Logan Airport and New York City. A Greyhound Bus Terminal (formerly Vermont Transit) is in White River Junction, Vermont and provides service to Boston, New York and Montreal. Amtrak train service runs daily from White River Junction to points north and south. In addition North Country Auto and Upper Valley Ride to the airport provide transportation not only locally, but to Manchester and Boston airports. Advance Transit provides local transportation at no charge.

The Lebanon Municipal Airport is open to commercial and private airplanes. Cape Air provides one-stop service connections to over 70 domestic and 29 international destinations. The airline shares the terminal with Jet Blue at Logan Regional

Airport and yes there is no charge for bags at either location. Commencing with free parking and four daily 55-minute Cape Air flights to Boston. Cape Air also provides two daily flights to White Plains (NY) with complimentary ground transportation to midtown Manhattan (Lebanon Airport to midtown in 2½ hours). A variety of aircraft hangar spaces, terminal areas and commercial land areas are available for lease. Avis and Hertz provide vehicle rentals from their offices in the Airport Terminal building. Based at the Lebanon Municipal Airport, Granite Air Service provides full propeller and jet airplane services, and Sharkey’s Helicopters provides full helicopter services. Granite Air Service operates in a beautiful, modern building with many amenities, including a spacious, comfortable passenger waiting area, a flight crew lounge and a nicely equipped flight planning room. ■

Ready to Explore

TOURISM:

New England provides four distinct seasons of beauty and activities to accommodate your needs whenever you visit. It is probably best-known for its incredible display of foliage in late September and early October when the countryside explodes into breathtaking color. A drive on Route 120 through Lebanon and Route 10 north through Hanover, Lyme, Orford, Piermont and North Haverhill offers one of the most beautiful scenic trips to the White Mountains of Northern New Hampshire.

There are plenty of attractions for everyone here in the Lebanon area as well. Thirty minutes east in Grafton, New Hampshire, is Ruggles Mine, open for exploration by adventurous spelunkers of all ages. Or there is the quaint and fascinating Enfield Shaker Museum. Visitors learn how the Shakers lived and how an understanding of their lifestyle can enhance our lives today. The museum is nestled between beautiful Mascoma Lake and Mount Assurance, only 15 minutes east of Lebanon. Open daily yearround, the museum has eight historic structures, organic herb and vegetable gardens and 18 acres for you to explore. The Great Stone Dwelling was once the tallest building north of Boston. The Enfield Shakers produced many highquality agricultural and industrial goods that are still prized today. The Enfield Shrine run by the LaSalette Fathers offers a museum with over 400 nativity scenes plus an awesome Christmas light

display from December 1st to January 1st annually. Forty minutes south in Warner, New Hampshire, the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum Education and Cultural Center is dedicated to increasing the public’s awareness of American Indian traditions, philosophies and art. And 10 minutes south in Cornish is St. Gaudens National Park – an artists’ colony, and the home of American author Winston Churchill. From there it’s a short drive across the longest two-lane covered bridge in America to Windsor, the “Birthplace of Vermont,” home of the Old Constitution House, American Precision Museum, Simon Pearce Glass (also in Quechee), Harpoon Brewery and more. The region includes hundreds of hiking trails, rivers and lakes. A favorite snowmobile, bike and footpath enjoyed by many locals is the 60-mile Northern Rail Trail that runs from Lebanon to Boscawen along a wonderfully scenic former railroad line. There are many brochures and maps for guiding you to these areas. Quechee Gorge in Vermont, known as “Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon,” is only 15 minutes west. The 165-footdeep gorge appeared when the glaciers started receding into Lake Hitchcock, which covered lands from Connecticut to Canada.

classes in ballet and jazz, and Creative Movement School of Dance providing classes in ballet, jazz and tap. Both schools host performances throughout the year.

The 800-seat Lebanon Opera House is the cultural heart of the community. Renovated in 2002, it is the largest proscenium theater in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, hosting events more than 250 days each year. Opera House performances include theater, music, dance, educational programming and an array of family entertainment, connecting over 60,000 people annually to the performing arts. Recent performances have included Garrison Keillor, Toots and the Maytals, Momix, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Bill Cosby and Weird Al Yankovic.

Downtown Lebanon is home to the Upper Valley Music Center. This organization is the region’s only full-service music school, enrolling hundreds of adults and children in music instruction programs of all instruments and styles. Dance is flourishing in Lebanon with the City Center Ballet Company providing

Duke’s Art & Frame Shop, just off the Green in downtown Lebanon, offers over 50 years of combined experience for all of your framing needs. For more informal entertainment, various musical groups, including the Lebanon Community Band, perform free concerts in Colburn Park every Monday night throughout the summer. Thursdays during the summer include a full day of activities in the park with a children’s concert series at noon, farmers’ market and crafts from 4 to 7 p.m. and evening concerts featuring nationally known folk and acoustic artists.

Lebanon has an Entertainment Movie Theater complex with six screens, while Hanover’s Nugget Theatres has four. Serious movie buffs may join the Dartmouth Film Series, which features a selection of American and foreign films from well-known titles to the obscure.

The city is also home to a number of local performance groups such as North Country Community Theater, which stages a full-scale musical every summer and an annual musical production for teenagers from across the Upper Valley each spring. Every August, Opera North presents two fully staged operatic productions featuring leading stars of the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and New York City Opera supported by talented young artists and an array of local performers.

The Alliance for the Visual Arts (AVA) Gallery, located just off Colburn Park in downtown Lebanon, has been nurturing young and old artists for three decades through classes and exhibits. The recent renovation of its 41,000-square-foot facility has received recognition as a “green,” sustainable building project.

GOVERNMENT:

In 1958, the New Hampshire Legislature approved a new Charter and the Town of Lebanon became the City of Lebanon. The city offices are located at 51 N. Park St., in the Lebanon Opera House right by Colburn Park in downtown Lebanon. There you will find the offices of the city manager, city clerk, planning, zoning, treasurer and many of the other departments that keep the city running.

Lebanon is split into three wards, with each ward electing two councilors; the voters at-large elect three additional councilors. Once the nine members of the city council are elected, they in turn elect a mayor from among themselves. The mayor, mostly an honorary position, serves as chair of the council and presides at civic functions. The actual day-to-day running of the city falls on the shoulders of the city manager who is appointed by the city council. The manager supervises the city, a workforce of over 150 individuals. The city also has a director of public works who is responsible for the highway, water and sewer and cemetery departments.

Lebanon’s police department is divided into two sections: Support Services, supervised by the Deputy Police Chief, and Patrol Services, supervised by the Captain. The fire and police departments are headed by highly qualified, specially trained Chiefs and other officers. The Lebanon Fire Department currently employs 24 career and approximately 12 on-call firefighters, and its mission is twofold: prevention and emergency response. EDUCATION: The Lebanon School District, under the leadership of School Administrative Union (SAU) 88, serves the children of Lebanon, West Lebanon, Grantham (7-12 only) and Plainfield (9-12 only). The District is comprised of two elementary schools, Mount Lebanon School and Hanover Street School (grades K-4) and Lebanon High School (grades 9-12), and recently built a new middle school which marks the consolidation of both Seminary Hill School and Lebanon Junior High School. The new Lebanon Middle School welcomed students in grades 5 through 8 in the fall of 2012.

The Lebanon Recreation & Parks Department is dedicated to “inspire play” by providing a variety of quality recreation programs, special events and recreational facilities for the community’s use and enjoyment. The department provides over 130 special events and programs in a typical year, including team and individual sports programs and camps, savvy senior outings, outdoor adventures and performing and creative arts. Special events include summer concerts in Colburn Park, holiday celebration events, running races, sports tournaments and the popular Lebanon Farmers’ Market. Lebanon has received numerous accolades including Tree City USA, Sportstown USA for New Hampshire by Sports Illustrated and Top 5 U.S. cities to raise a child in the outdoors by the Outdoor Foundation.

For summer fun in the sun, ponds, lakes and golf courses are plentiful. Storrs Pond is 15 minutes north in Hanover; Mascoma Lake is approximately 10 minutes east in Enfield. The Mascoma River meanders from Mascoma Lake through Enfield and Lebanon, and empties into the

The Lebanon Conservation Commission maintains more than 25 miles of woodland hiking trails within Lebanon’s city limits. Skiing, snowboarding and tubing are the popular sports for the winter months. Just a quarter-mile from downtown Lebanon, the Storrs Hill Ski Area offers fine downhill skiing, a snowboard park and ski jumps, and Dartmouth Skiway is located 30 minutes to the north in Lyme. Within a twohour radius are a dozen world-class ski resorts for both alpine and cross-country enthusiasts of every ability level. No matter what the season, families can enjoy ice skating, taking ballet, dance, gymnastics, tae kwon do or karate lessons just minutes from Colburn Park. Special Events

The Chamber sponsors the Wechsler Memorial Golf Classic, in honor of the chamber’s previous executive director. Sponsorships are also available for this annual tournament. All proceeds for this event go to scholarships to adult learners in the Upper Valley. Since its inception in 1992 the tournament has provided over $86,000 in scholarships.

Public Forums The Chamber promotes discussion of important issues by hosting candidate forums and seminars on such topics as business ethics and pending legislation. The Chamber is a voluntary, nonprofit corporation formed in 1916 by a group of the community’s business leaders. It was created in order to “promote the growth and prosperity of their City of Lebanon and vicinity, and the agricultural, civic, commercial, industrial and social welfare of the people of the Greater Lebanon Area.” Elections for officers of the Chamber are held at the Annual Meeting each September. The Chamber is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors, which hires a President and CEO and other office staff as necessary to carry on the work of the organization. Five Directors are elected each year to serve three-year terms. Members are invited to attend meetings and participate on several standing committees, e.g. Marketing, Special Events, Government Affairs, Membership and Human Resources. The Chamber also selects the Good Citizen of the Year and the Business of the Year. This event honors those who have served, serve, and continue to serve the Lebanon community in an above and beyond manner. The event presented at its’ holiday social is the highlight of the chamber’s year. ■
