AYOr’s Message

Thirty-eight years ago, when I moved to Metuchen with my wife, Mary Anne, we were attracted to the Downtown; the canopy of shade trees which sheltered and provided shade for its streets and the many recreation facilities – especially the pool. Of course, as teachers, we knew about the wonderful school system. Metuchen offered us a place to start a family and still be able to commute to work. As the years progressed, we had three daughters, and while my location of employment changed a few times, what never changed was the very conscious choice my wife and I made to stay here in Metuchen. It was the best place to raise and educate our family. How wonderful that all that was special and new to us then is still special, vibrant and important now. Metuchen, always easily accessible for commuters working in “The City,” Philadelphia, or “The Shore,” became even more user friendly with the improvements made to the train station. Commuters either live here or share in the ambiance of our unique downtown. Our Downtown is bustling and there are plans for it to expand and prosper. As Mayor, I will assist the Chamber of Commerce in supporting the Main Street and overseeing the connection to the new Renaissance Development. I see a vibrant Downtown with people shopping, relaxing and meeting with other community members while enjoying some music, art or refreshment at the grand town center, built as the focal point of our town. Our recreation facilities continue to burgeon as well. We have received numerous grants to continue improvements in our parks. In fact, in the last few years Metuchen has received grants totaling $2.7 million, which have raised the excellence of Myrtle, Vidas and Hampton parks. In recent years, the pool commission has completed improvements, making that original enticement for my family into an even grander facility. We get to enjoy a break from the summer heat as well as watching our children compete in aquatic events. The Metuchen portion of the Middlesex County Greenway is nearly completed adding a valued lineal park for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. Metuchen is a community serviced by hundreds of volunteers – community members who clean parks on Earth Day, fight fires, provide public safety or emergency assistance, direct traffic at various religious events, guide our senior programs and provide pumpkins with candles for those excited children, who know that Halloween can only begin with a family treat. Metuchen is for families. I knew it 38 years ago when I first moved here. My three daughters were all raised here, and joyfully when my granddaughter walks with “Granpy the Mayor,” we help to oversee and plan for all that keeps our community strong and vibrant. Mayor Thomas Vahalla

Welcome From The etuchen Area Chamber of Commerce

M

Metuchen is a warm and welcoming community, proud of its heritage and diversity. On our tree-lined streets you will find the ideal combination of friendly people, a vibrant downtown, a great school system and easy commute to New York that has set Metuchen apart. Fifteen years ago I was asked to join the Board of Directors of the Metuchen Chamber of Commerce. I must admit that I really didn’t have a clear understanding of all of the things the Chamber did other than promote business. Over these many years I remain in awe of all the wonderful events the Chamber sponsors, with the hope of increasing business for our local merchants and improving the quality of life for the entire Metuchen Community.

Chamber also sponsors the Scarecrows on Main Festival in October and the Metuchen Country Fair which has been an annual event for over 49 years, bringing thousands of people to Main Street each year. So, welcome to Metuchen! I look forward to meeting you in one of our many excellent restaurants or at one of our countless chamber events. Maggy Cook 2012 Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce, President

The Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce’s involvement in the community ranges from our Summer Classic Car Cruise Night, to our wonderful newsletter – the Chamber Connection, to two amazing parades each year, to our Farmer’s Market and our wonderful collaboration with The Arts Council known as the Junebug ArtFest, and that isn’t even everything we do! community ntroduction & history

I An ideal American small town is thriving in the borough of Metuchen. Neighborhoods are filled with historic homes, while the irresistible bargains and tasty treats are waiting downtown. The friendly, welcoming spirit and the atmosphere translate into a remarkable environment enjoyed by both residents and visitors. Metuchen affords residents major metropolitan resources while still having true community harmony.

Members of a sub tribe of the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware Indians, are seen as the original inhabitants of the area now known as Metuchen. The first Europeans did not arrive until 1665, much later, under the leadership of Lord Carteret. Lord Carteret traveled to New England, in order to promote development of the area, and promised generous land grants to those who relocated south. Eventually, the area was settled receiving its name from the Indian Chief Metuching, who lived between 1630 and 1700.

Receiving the best personalized service in Metuchen is easy for residents as they get to know their local merchants. Both smaller, local business and larger corporations thrive in the area, taking advantage of the wide scope of economic amenities and incentives offered. All of this has created a formidable economic vitality, which has contributed greatly to Metuchen’s steady growth. Tree-lined streets and an abundance of annual events bring members of the community together. Major transportation options allow for easy access in and out of the area, while train service to New York City makes traveling convenient and efficient.

The area remained a small farming village into the early 19th century. The completion of the New Jersey Railroad stimulated commercial development and the area steadily grew. By 1870, Metuchen had developed into a hub of commerce and culture. Everything from churches, businesses to schools; even literary and debating societies were established. By the end of the decade, commerce had grown to such an extent that 91 businesses were listed in the New Brunswick Directory. Metuchen, incorporated as a borough in 1900, progressed with technology and industry in the following years. Often referred to as “The Brainy Borough, due to the substantial concentration of professionals, artists, educators and literary figures (now even a former Governor) that have lived in the area, Metuchen stands as a town of cultural and social development.

With over 13,500 residents, Metuchen maintains a preserved historic character. Since its establishment in the 1700s, the borough offers a distinctive stable lifestyle and top-notch amenities to residents and visitors to remain a lively place.

Strategically situated within Middlesex County, in the heart of central New Jersey, Metuchen is located less than two miles from a number of state’s major arteries, which include the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, Interstate 287, U.S. Highway 1 and State Highway 27. Manhattan is a mere 25 miles northwest from Metuchen. Even more, it is easy to commute to Newark, Trenton, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and even the bustling big city of New York by train or bus. The New Jersey Transit bus routes connect Metuchen and Fords, Plainfield, Perth Amboy, Raritan, Piscataway and Edison from the transit station, serving as a connection point. For those utilizing the train station, there is convenient and plentiful parking. Extra parking spaces have been added throughout the borough and more are to be added in future years.

In 2011 over 33 million passengers were served through Newark Liberty, flying throughout the U.S. and the rest of North America, as well as Europe, South America and Asia.
