Welcome to the Missouri State University family! In most of my correspondence, I mention that Missouri State is a great place to live, learn and grow. Each new academic year that message is reinforced by those of us who work at this great institution of higher education; especially by those of us who work in student affairs! During the opportunities that I have to address students, I often convey that they are part of an exclusive group of individuals. We define that exclusive group as “college students.” The role we have at Missouri State is to assist our college students to join an even more exclusive group by becoming college graduates! We focus upon the success of each individual student and strive to provide the experiences and support necessary to join the Missouri State citizen-scholars who have come before them. This publication will hopefully serve as an important resource as we all work together to create the opportunities for success. While we expect college life to be a place where students are challenged to excel in and out of the classroom, students should also expect assistance, support and guidance. You will find that the professionals within student affairs provide not only opportunities for leadership and personal engagement, but help remove the barriers that might hinder progress and ensure the positive support necessary for individual success. Welcome to Missouri State University, where we wear our maroon and white with pride and proclaim that “it is a privilege to be a bear!”

Best Wishes,

Earle F. Doman Ph.D. Vice President for Student Affairs

Student Employment: Many of our students seek part-time employment to help supplement income from home and other financial assistance. Missouri State offers more than 2,000 employment opportunities on campus, as well as positions off campus. If eligible, a student can work 10-20 hours a week through the federal Work-Study program, which requires filing a FAFSA; however, employment opportunities are available to interested students not eligible for Work-Study.

Student Support Services: The following free services and activities for Student Support Services participants include, but are not limited to: academic advising; workshops in academic, personal and professional areas; financial aid and scholarship assistance; graduate school preparation, including assistance with entrance exams; first-year and second-year experience programs; a mentoring program; trips to colleges offering graduate programs; visits to area cultural events and activities; and paid admission for local cultural events. Additionally, the program offers a stipend to participants who meet program requirements and who meet income guidelines.

In summary, we offer a wide variety of financial assistance that can help make your efforts for a college education achievable. In order to take advantage of the maximum available to you, follow these steps: • Apply for admission; you must be admitted before you are fully eligible for university scholarships. Our academic scholarships are awarded based on information provided on your admission application.

Scholarships: Missouri State offers a number of university-funded scholarships and is privileged to have a strong donorfunded program. Our academic scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $12,500 (plus a fee waiver for out-of-state students) per academic year; we award a total of nearly $22 million in both needbased and merit scholarships annually. For detailed information on available scholarships, how to apply and applicable deadlines, go to www.missouristate.edu/ FinancialAid/scholarships/default.asp. Changing How We Perceive Disability Mission Statement: In conjunction with the Community Principles and overall mission of Missouri State University, the Office of Disability Services appreciates disability as an integral part of the university experience. We are committed to providing equal access and opportunity to all campus programs and services for persons with disabilities.

“Disability is not a ‘brave struggle’ or ‘courage in the face of adversity’... disability is an art. It’s an ingenious way to live.” – Neil Marcus Through collaboration and support of the entire campus community, Disability Services promotes disability pride, selfdetermination of the student and universally accessible design principles, so that everyone has full access to university life. As our campus becomes more diverse, including different learning styles, languages, abilities and cultural backgrounds, we appreciate disability as an integral part of the university experience. Our mission and purpose is driven by principles of Universal Design; the design of

products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The Disability Resource Center works in collaboration with students, faculty, staff and administrators in the following ways: • Consults with faculty and staff to proactively create equitable and inclusive learning environments • Promotes and facilitates access to campus programs and resources through training and advocacy

• Provides accommodations and resources to students with disabilities If a student with a disability is not able to fully participate due to the design of a course or program, students may request an accommodation by contacting the Disability Resource Center. Disability Resource Center is a Division of Diversity and Inclusion department.

Because of the negative stereotyping associated with disability, students have been reluctant to identify themselves publicly. Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society presents an opportunity to change that perception by recognizing students with disabilities for their academic accomplishments. In addition, this honor society facilitates development of skills in leadership, advocacy and education for participating students.
