How good is Wisconsin golf? courses designed by major champions Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tom Lehman and Wisconsin’s own Andy North? How about mom-and-pop nine-hole courses where you still can show up on Saturday morning without a tee time? Whatever it is you’re seeking in a golf course, Wisconsin has it.

If there is one reassuring sign that spring is coming, it has to be those brave souls who break out the golf clubs when the grass isn’t yet green and the snow hasn’t completely melted. And if there is one place to golf this spring, it has to be Wisconsin. How good is Wisconsin golf? How about 500 public courses of all varieties, from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River? How about

Beginners and advanced players alike can live the tournament dream on a Wisconsin golf course! Since the 1930s, both men and women golf professionals have been teeing it up at courses across the state for their shot at glory. For close to a decade, the LPGA Futures Tour made Wisconsin a regular tour stop. Naga-Waukee Golf Course in Delafield was the original location in the 1990s, and Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex was the longest host for five years. And, for three years the Arnold Palmer golf course at Geneva National was the place to be for up-and-coming LPGA professionals. Men’s professional golf tournaments were largely played at country clubs until the Greater Milwaukee Open moved to Brown Deer Park in 1994. Best remembered as the course where Tiger Woods made his professional debut in 1996 (finishing 60th and winning $2,554, with a Sunday holein-one on No. 14), many of the game’s top PGA Tour pros found their way to Milwaukee. No Wisconsin golfing bucket list can

be complete without a trip to Kohler. Blackwolf Run landed the U.S. Women’s Open in 1998 and 2012, and the men teed it up at Whistling Straits for the 2004 PGA Championship, the 2007 Men’s Senior U.S. Open and a second PGA in 2010. This summer, Whistling Straits will host the PGA Championship, and Kohler will be home to the prestigious Ryder Cup competition between the U.S. and Europe in 2020. Whistling Straits isn’t the only course that will be home to an upcoming championship — Erin Hills, which hosted the 2011 U.S. Amateur, is slated to host the 2017 U.S. Open. The competition will be a defining challenge with tees stretching to 7,812 yards! Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Wisconsinnative Tony Romo has played in a Janesville amateur tournament for several years. The Ray Fischer at Riverside Golf Course is open to everyone and counts PGA Tour veterans Steve Stricker and Skip Kendall as past champions. Testing yourself on these tournamentcaliber golf courses is easy in Wisconsin! Put a tee in the ground, hit it hard and go get it. Whether you’re in a tournament draw or on your own, you can take pride knowing you’re walking where the legends have.

PGA Championship During the 2015 PGA Championship, tee times on The Straits, one of two courses at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, will be unavailable Aug. 1-18. There’s no shortage of excitement when the PGA Championship blows through Whistling Straits. In 2004, Vijay Singh raised the Wanamaker Trophy after a three-hole playoff. Six years later, Martin Kaymer edged out Bubba Watson in extra holes. This year, the PGA Championship returns for a third time, Aug. 10-16. Get your tickets at www.pga.com/pgachampionship. Tickets range in price from $30 for Monday and Tuesday practice rounds, to $90 for Saturday or Sunday rounds. egardless if your budget is “champagne and caviar” or “beer and brats,” Wisconsin has you covered with top-notch golf courses that will challenge your game.

University Ridge — Madison If Wisconsin had a home golf course, University Ridge Golf Course in Madison would be it. Expect plenty of Badger sightings, as the University of Wisconsin golf teams call this course home. The course itself, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is representative of Wisconsin, with prairies, woods, hills and water to test every aspect of your game. It’s a classic risk/reward challenge. Wild Ridge — Eau Claire An inland links-style course, Wild

Ridge takes golfers on a wild ride through wetlands and up and over its namesake ridge on the back nine, where the wind and terrain can wreak havoc on your score. If you didn’t make enough birdies, try the adjacent Mill Run course at this popular and affordable 36-hole complex.

Big Fish — Hayward Architect Pete Dye is best known in Wisconsin for his Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run courses in Kohler, but not to be overlooked is another gem — Big Fish, just east of Hayward. Big Fish’s front nine is a bit of Ireland with flat and pure links, and the back nine is a whole lot of Wisconsin, cut through a rolling hardwood forest. Big Fish is named after the land of Wisconsin’s trophy fish — the musky. The course doesn’t have much bite in terms of

here can you find cascading waterfalls, unexpected drop offs, castles, caves, twists and turns — all rolled into one adventure? At one of these Wisconsin mini-golf courses! Golf isn’t just a sport saved for a guys getaway or an afternoon business meeting. Gather the whole family, pick out your favorite brightly colored golf ball and head to one of these uniquely themed mini-golf courses in Wisconsin.

Eagle Falls Adventure Golf & Laser Tag — Eagle River Centered around a 1950s fishing camp-theme, complete with a fishing cabin, bait shop, dock and more, this mini-golf course could not be better suited for its Eagle River surroundings. But the fun doesn’t stop after you’ve sunk your putt. Many of the holes offer additional activities such as slides, a talking outhouse, and a bridge or steppingstone paths. Moose Mulligan’s Adventure Golf — Siren Buy one game or plan for future fun outings with five, 10 or family season passes that are available. The perfect

place to host a party or event, this challenging course is fun for minigolfers of all ages. The 18 holes meander through beautifully landscaped surroundings of fountains, ponds, streams and a cascading waterfall.

Vitense Golfland — Madison A brightly colored wonderland with life-size mystical creatures, challenging obstacles, two outdoor courses and one indoors, Vitense Golfland in Madison offers spectacular sights and fun twists for the whole family. Choose whichever course looks most appealing to you: the outdoor California or Wisconsin courses, or stay indoors and meander your way through the Madison course. Pirate’s Cove Miniature Golf — Sister Bay Above and beyond your typical mini-golf course, Pirate’s Cove Miniature Golf in Sister Bay resembles more of a theme park. Add some adventure to your Door County vacation by playing 18 at this piratethemed, family-oriented course. Some of the obstacles include caves, footbridges and waterfalls.

Wisconsin golf clubhouses worth visiting

There was a time when the clubhouse was probably the last thing golfers thought about when heading to the first tee. It was a place to change your shoes, have a hot dog at the turn and a cold one when you were done. That was then. This is now.

Golf Course in Middleton “Goat Hill” for all the obvious reasons. Walking 18 at Pleasant View is an impressive cardio workout. It’s also a great family destination because of the kid-friendly Par-3 course in addition to the other 27 holes. Some 300 feet above Lake Mendota, you’ll love the view of the Capitol. But the burgers are a great reason to take the trek to Goat Hill. Fresh ingredients, bakery fresh buns and an outdoor grill are the perfect cap to a delightful round of golf. Grant Park was Milwaukee’s first golf course, opening in 1920. However, the clubhouse dates back to the 1860s when it was originally a farm home. It’s a good golf course for youngsters and seniors at only 5,200 yards long. You are stepping back in Wisconsin history when visiting Grant Park. Thornberry Creek in Oneida stands as a oneof-a-kind golf destination. First, it’s the “official” golf course of the Green Bay Packers, which is cool. It’s not unusual to find one of the players there teeing off, which is also cool. But, and you better brace yourself here, the Sports Pub has 21 (and we asked someone to count them to be sure) 40-inch color televisions. Tres cool. Tournament directors who set up events across Wisconsin would argue that there are great clubhouses around the Wisconsin Dells. Wild Rock’s log cabin style clubhouse gets Continued on Page 12

These days, golf course clubhouses stand as their own travel destinations offering outstanding food, comfort beyond comprehension and, often, spectacular scenery. The Kohler clubhouses at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan and Blackwolf Run in Kohler are considered the gold standard for service. Like the courses, each of the clubhouses have a distinctive personality. Respecting the natural setting of the Sheboygan River Valley, the Blackwolf clubhouse is big into pine logs and fieldstone with Native American artifacts on display. At the Straits, you’ll love the Irish farmhouse. Both run the gauntlet from modestly priced food options to elegant dining. Comfort being the operative word at both. If Kohler sets the gold standard, their main challenger is the clubhouse at Erin Hills in Hartford. Tabbed to host the 2017 U.S. Open, Erin Hills capitalizes on its own Irish inspiration by offering a menu of distinctly Wisconsin fare, as well as a lengthy list of at least 15 whiskeys and scotches from the home country all anchored by a two-story stone fireplace. Erin Hills gets an extra gold star for offering on-course accommodations. From single rooms to suites, you can literally be just steps from a bucket list defining golf adventure. The locals have always called Pleasant View

high marks for its pro shop, octagon bar and outdoor patio for scenery. Madison’s Andy North carved out a second career as a course designer. “Breathtaking,” and “classy” were how one golf insider described the clubhouse at Trappers Turn. A bit off the beaten path just north of the Dells is Northern Bay. A fun round because Northern Bay boasts replicas of seven of the toughest holes on the PGA Tour. A new clubhouse recently opened where you can watch players struggle with a mirror image of the 17th island green at TPC Sawgrass (their No. 9) and the 18th hole at Bay Hill Country Club (their No. 18). SentryWorld in Stevens Point has undergone a big upgrade to both its golf course and clubhouse. Not only is the clubhouse new, but there’s an expansive field house complete with indoor tennis and volleyball courts, an indoor driving range, as well as a new full-scale restaurant, PJ’s, named after one of Sentry’s founders, PJ Jacobs. As part of a corporate philosophy, Sentry promises a renewed commitment to the local community and families.

Clubhouses worth visiting If there was an award for the most interesting, quirky and wonderfully odd golf clubhouse it would go to the Eagle Springs Golf Resort in Eagle. Locals liked one particular apple tree so much, they didn’t want anything to happen to it when they built a new clubhouse. But it was in the way. So they built the new clubhouse around the apple tree and it’s

Blackwolf Run

still there today. Right next to the shirts. Unfortunately, the original tree died a few years ago but the story remains as a great conversation piece. The other great folklore at Eagle Springs? 1920s Cubs pitcher A.G. Spaulding designed the first two holes. They thereby claim, albeit arguably, to be the oldest golf course in Wisconsin.
