A

ll are welcome at the Belfast Co-op, a community-owned health food store and deli/cafe located in scenic downtown Belfast since 1976. The Belfast Cooperative Store is a member-owned and controlled retail outlet for whole natural foods and other goods and provisions. We strive to offer a wide selection of products that are organically produced and locally-sourced whenever available, at reasonable prices, to support healthy lifestyle choices for both our members and the general public. Our intent is to be a resource for information concerning health, nutrition, and the source of our products, as well as for community topics and other related issues. Founded in 1976 by folks who wanted a steady source of natural, wholesome food at fair prices, the Co-op operated out of two Main Street locations until moving to our current home in 1993. Our 6,000 square foot building, which we purchased in 1997, has allowed us to greatly expand our offerings. In addition to selling organic and natural foods, we carry health and beauty aids, offer our own in-house herbalist, source fair trade gifts from around the world, and operate a treasured community gathering space: The Co-op Café.

DANICA CANDLEWORKS

West Rockport

N

estled between Rockland and Rockport in West Rockport, you can find Danica Candleworks in its distinctive and award-winning Scandinavianstyle building. Erik Laustsen began dipping candles in 1980 after apprenticing in Denmark at his family’s candle factory. In 1982 the business was moved to the coast of Maine where he and his wife, Cindy, began making candles in their Victorian-era carriage barn. When the business grew too large for this in 1991, they relocated to their current location on Route 90. The Candleworks produces hand-dipped tapers, hand-poured votive, jar and pillar candles. Using a variety of waxes, including soy and beeswax, every candle is made from scratch. The dipping process takes a full two days. The shop carries a variety of candle accessories as well as jewelry and home décor. Watch for their annual “Candle Blow Out Sale” on Nov. 16th 18th, where you can get great deals on candle seconds. Stop in and say hi to Susan, Beverly, Susanne and Michelle, the “candle elves,” at the retail shop open M-F 10-5 and Sat. 10-3.
