riting this in early August it seems strange to be putting an autumnal issue of Village Tweet together with it’s Back to School cover, feature (page 16) and ads from local schools, tutors and playgroups (pages 17 and 19) but there it is. The summer seems to have passed particulary quickly this year, perhaps because it somewhat dragged its heels getting here in the first place! As ever, the What’s On pages are packed with events and places to go. To publicise your event in this free section, all you have to do is drop me an email with brief details including date, venue and contact details. Caramel Apple Pie September is apple season so make the most of them

METHOD

1. To make the pastry sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Pour in the cold water and mix with a round-bladed knife until it all starts to come together. Knead the pastry a little until it forms a ball. The less you handle it the more short and crumbly it will be. Wrap in clingfilm and rest it in the fridge for 30 minutes. 2. Take about two thirds of the pastry and roll it out onto a floured surface into a circle big enough to line a 25cm pie dish. Gently press the pastry into the dish and trim off any excess. Wrap it up again and put back in the fridge while the apples are prepared. 3. Peel, core and slice the apples no thinner than 0.5cm. Squeeze the lemon over them and grate in the zest. Sprinkle with the cinnamon. 4. To make the caramel sauce melt the butter in a large pan, then add the flour and cook gently for one minute. Add both sugars and the water then bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes. Add the apple slices and stir to coat them with the caramel. Cook gently for a few more minutes until the apples begin to soften. Allow to cool, and then place them into the lined pie dish. 5. Preheat the oven to 170ËšC. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut it into 10 or 12 strips as long as the pie dish. Use a pastry brush to brush a little water around the edges of the tart so the lattice top will stick. Weave the lattice on top, securing the edges. Then trim off the excess pastry. Sprinkle the pie generously with caster sugar and bake for 30 minutes. Serve with custard or good quality ice-cream.

Clive Edmonds? I am hoping to find an old friend, Clive Edmonds. Clive worked in printing and would now be in his early 80s. Originally from Wallington and Sutton, Surrey but in recent years, possibly around 2001, believed moved to Billingshurst or district. Clive, myself and two others (now deceased) were a group of four lads going back to schooldays. Any information would be gratefully received. T

his years Fireworks Display at Billingshurst promises to be spectacular, according to the Organising Committee. Spokesman Peter Hooper has told us that they have appointed local firm Aurora Fireworks again this year, and as this display will be the first of the firework season, and the most local to Aurora’s base in Wisborough Green, they have promised a truly spectacular and mystical show in keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Magic’. It will be held on 19th October at Jubilee Sports Fields, on the western edge of the Village, just off the by-pass. The show will start promptly at 8pm. Entrance to the site will on foot, no cars, via either the main entrance off the A272, or over the footbridge leading from the Coombe Hill area of the village from 6.30. Tickets will be £5 per adult, £4 per child 3-16, under 3 free, same as last year, although advance tickets are available at a number places in the village, most notably Jack Fuller’s fish and chip shop, the King’s Arms, Jake’s Taxis, Chestnut Tree House shop, the Village Hall and the Lions bookshop, all at 50p off which, for a family

of four, represents a saving of £2. Refreshments in the form of burgers, hotdogs, a bar and soft drinks will be available, laid on by the Sports and Recreation Association (BSRA) and the Scouts and Guides, and a variety of amusements will be available for the kids. A collection will be made in aid of Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Those travelling to Billingshurst by car will need to park anywhere in the village and walk across to Jubilee Fields, where all spectators will be able to get an excellent view. Chairman of the Committee, Jim Burroughs, says that this event, which is backed by a number of groups in the village, including BSRA, the Parish Council, the Billingshurst Partnership, Rotary and Lions, together with generous sponsorship from Coco’s, has now become the main Autumn Event in the community, and hopes that everyone will have truly fabulous and memorable time. Appeal / Food and drink

Urgent appeal following 50% drop in puppy parents

C

anine Partners is launching an urgent appeal for puppy parents following a 50% drop in the numbers willing to work with the charity to train pups in Sussex. The national assistance dog charity, based in Midhurst, West Sussex, is struggling to recruit volunteers to help them train the puppies that will go on to transform a life. Puppy parents perform a crucial role in the development of a dog from an eight-week-old puppy to a fully trained assistance dog. Elaine Potter, the Charity’s Satellite Trainer based at the national centre for excellence at Heyshott, added, “We have a fantastic group of puppy parents at our centre but we need more volunteers. It really wouldn’t be an understatement to say that our puppy parents are the lifeblood of our charity – and we need more of them.” A puppy parent would look after a young pup in their home while agreeing to attend a weekly training session with Elaine at the centre’s West Sussex base. Puppy parent Janet Whipp, who is currently training pup Magnum, said, “I adore the work I do with Canine Partners, to think that I can give a little dog a start in life that will see it go on to change someone’s life is worth everything to me. “I can’t recommend it enough. The moment we started here we became part of the Canine Partners family.” The Charity currently has 170 puppy parents all across the UK who have committed to taking a puppy through training. But the figure has seen a sharp decline. Elaine explained what would be expected of potential volunteers: “Anyone who is thinking of becoming a

prospective puppy parent should be at home for most of the day, be available to attend our once-a-week training sessions near Midhurst and accept our socialisation guidelines and training plan.” Elaine added, “Once our puppy parents hand over their little charges to our advanced trainers they know that the dog they have trained will increase the independence, confidence and self-esteem of a person with disabilities. “But they can also bring companionship, a sense of security and increased social interaction for their human partner. All our puppy parents past and present would agree it is a truly amazing gift to be able to help change someone else’s life.” During the course of their time with a puppy parent the young dog will learn core skills which will set them up for their spell in advanced training. Having a dog which is equipped with key skills and has been fully socialised is essential as they move into learning tasks like opening and closing doors and loading and unloading the washing machine for their human partner. The Charity also works closely with forces charity Help For Heroes and has matched assistance dogs with injured service personnel. Please contact the Puppy Office on (01730) 716017 or email puppyoffice@caninepartners.org.uk for more information. Myrid Ramsay

Community

Keep Kirdford and Wisborough ‘Green’

“P

icturesque, quintessential, gem, classic”. These are just some of the terms that are used to describe our villages and the surrounding area. So it is with sadness and concern that our community recently received the news that plans are afoot for an exploratory oil and shale gas drilling rig on the Kirdford Road at Northup Copse under the leadership of Celtique Energie. • The term ‘exploratory’ should not be underestimated. The infrastructure required simply for the initial drilling phase will mean a large volume of heavy-duty traffic coming off the A272 and circumnavigating the green through the centre of the village conservation area before proceeding up the small singlelane country road that Kirdford Road becomes. • When erected, the exploratory rig will consist of a tower some 40-50 metres high bringing lots of light, noise and general industrial disturbance on a 24/7 rota. Initially the drill will be vertical but subsequent exploration will peel off of that subterranean column to forge horizontal paths through the rock including passage through natural aquifers. • Eventually, if shale gas is found then it is more than likely the company will employ the highly controversial technique of ‘fracking’ in order to mechanically fracture the rock layers and release natural gas, a process that involves the use of chemical laden fluid and thousands of gallons of water. All that water has to be sourced from natural resources and the toxic products removed from the site for disposal. • The process of extraction could be in place for 25 years. If all this sounds a wholly unnatural counterpoint to the earlier description of our beautiful corner of the countryside then you will share the concern felt by many. The potential impact on the

environment, quality of life, traffic safety and atmosphere of our villages is extremely worrying. Even in the vast remote outback of Australia this issue has proven deeply unpopular. It is in this vain that a group of residents from both Wisborough Green and Kirdford have come together in opposition. We wish to thoroughly research all of the issues in order to coordinate a robust and strident defence when the formal planning application is submitted. We recognise that this issue is gathering a national focus. The government is seeking to explore potential ‘on-shore self-sufficiency’ in the energy market but in an era of ‘renewable’ resources it is surely insensible to propose widespread industrialisation of some of the most beautiful countryside the British Isles has to offer. If applications like this succeed it will mean a proliferation of similar wells and networked piping across West Sussex. Even Celtique Energie themselves describe this proposal as an ‘unconventional play’. Our neighbouring communities are already under threat (Balcombe, Fernhurst, Broadford Bridge) so it is essential that we come together to present a united front. If you would like to be kept updated with the progress of our enquiries and all the latest news please get in touch with us via email, keepkirdfordandwisboroughgreen@gmail.com or our website: www.no-drilling.co.uk When the application is submitted for public consultation we need as many people as possible to write in opposition and we will help to inform this process (by the time of publication this may have already happened so please check the website). The fracking issue is clearly alarming and of deep concern but of equal importance for fighting the application are the vital local issues. Please help to save our villages. Sam, KKWG

That’s Life! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

T

he thread of my scribbles this month are a result of a happening that occurred today. I had to take some tablets out of a bottle so that they could somehow persuade my frame to continue to function without too many squeaks and creaks from the various moving parts that enable me to reach for my glass when the desire overwhelms me. Could I get the blasted top off? Of course not. Childproof indeed. Try Grannie and Granddad proof as well. It was quite willing to serenade me with a steady castanet chorus of clicking, and showed no resistance to turning effortlessly on its thread. But open? Oh no… No way. So it would seem to me that a lot of the thought that has been put into modern improvements have skipped a generation in their inventiveness and left us ‘poor old souls’ to flounder in a helpless effort to ‘get with it’! Milk bottle tops. Remember the old cardboard ones? Yes, all right, they were inclined to douse the unwary down their fronts if you stuck your thumb in too hard. But now: nine out of ten are just fine, but I’m convinced that the tenth one at every dairy is fastened on with superglue. No matter how hard you pull, that little flap will not budge. Fingers get red sore where they slip off the unyielding tab and the wretched thing only lets you get at the contents when, out of desperation, you resort to stabbing it with a knife or the point of a handy pair of scissors. You’ve all suffered it, I’m sure. How about that little tiny tag on the end of bread wraps? Why are so many stuck all the way along, so that you are forced to invade the knife draw yet again to find something to cut the perishing thing off? Taps, they are another thing. Oh yes, they look super. Reclining at the rear of the sink, shining so proudly back at you. Until that day when one starts to drip. Now what did we once do? We turned off the water, we took the top off the tap, we replaced the washer. Simple.

12

Now? Turn off all the water. Drain the pipes. Spend half an hour trying to figure out how to get at the internals of the blasted thing without scratching that beautiful chromework only to discover that it doesn’t have anything that remotely resembles a rubber washer on its workings. So, it’s put the damn thing back together again and call a plumber. He will study it for an hour before declaring that it would be cheaper to replace the whole unit and that will be £60 please. That’s life though, I suppose. Carrier bag handles that give way six foot from the front door. Everything that you go to buy that’s in metric when you’ve measured it in feet and inches, and of course the reverse should you measure the metric version first. You want three apples but they are in packs of four. Two for the price of one, why not one half price? Special coupons that give you a big discount on objects that you never buy anyway. And why does your watch battery give up the ghost on the second day of your foreign holiday when there is nowhere that you can get a replacement? You tell me! As for those new-fangled ‘energy saving’ light bulbs. Well, in the middle of the night, by the time they have decided to give off enough light to see by, you’ve stubbed you toe, walked into the loo door, and are half way back to the bedroom. As for cars. I know, I know, they are far more reliable than they were in my day, and they are full of gadgets that lead you to anywhere in the world that you want to go (including that short cut through the ford that’s no longer there) but, oh boy, when they do go wrong… No simple tinkering under the bonnet now, my friends. No quick plug change or points cleaning. Oh no. Now the metallic monster has to be strapped to a computer so that its complex internals can be examined closer than a surgeon at an appendectomy. Then after you have received and dealt with the bill you can go to a darkened and quiet room, lay slowly down and sip a glass of water as you take a couple of pills… providing you can get the top off the bottle of course! It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken that is. John Nash

Horsham & Crawley Samaritans Awareness Week

T

he Samaritans of Horsham and Crawley have been offering emotional support for 40 years from 21 Denne Road. To celebrate, Samaritans Awareness Week will run 29th September to 5th October. The week is being launched with a concert on the bandstand in Horsham’s Carfax, 12 noon, Sunday 29th September presented by the Horsham Folk Club so come along and enjoy the music and a ceilidh finale. Look out for Samaritans throughout the week in Swan Walk and on market days. At the campaign’s forefront is the message that you don’t have to have suicidal thoughts to call Samaritans. It doesn’t matter what your worry is; what concerns Samaritans is how big that worry feels for you. If the weight of something feels huge, then it is. Reluctance to burden loved ones or fear of being judged can lead to emotions being buried. It’s OK to talk to Samaritans about that growing anxiety before it turns to overwhelming despair. But if it does, they’ll be there for that too. At 21 Denne Road, listening volunteers come in around-the-clock for their shifts. Putting their own life experiences aside,

they don their metaphorical Samaritans hats and concentrate 100% on each caller. They never know who’s going to call or what they’ll talk about but they are always there so there’s no need to worry about waking them up! For those seeking face-to-face support, they’re open most days between 9am and 9pm (call and check or go to www.handcsams.org) and you’ll get a comfy chair and a warm welcome. Callers can also text or e-mail if that’s more comfortable. The Samaritans of Horsham & Crawley want to reach those who may not have considered themselves a Samaritans caller before. Any of us could be callers. Phone (01403) 276276, (01293) 515151, 08457 909090, text 07725 909090 or e-mail: jo@samaritans.org Caroline Thomas, Horsham & Crawley Samaritans

School / Private hire / Community

Back to School Could you help out?

S

chools are generally very keen to foster a good relationship with parents and their wider community. Often people are wellintentioned and would like to help out, but don’t know how. Here are some ideas which might appeal. You could become a member of the Parent Teachers Association. Traditionally these were developed to foster better relationships between parents and schools, but they are now generally associated with fundraising. You could be involved with activities as varied as running a stall at the summer fête, overseeing discos for the pupils, or organising quiz evenings for parents. Associations are always looking for innovative fundraising ideas, and bringing in new members can bring additional contacts and different perspectives. Why not become a parent governor? Governors get involved with the strategic decision making of schools. They attend full governor body meetings and usually sit on committees dealing with various aspects of the school, such as staffing finance and curriculum. Parent governors are voted for by the parents of pupils at the school. Core responsibilities include: ensuring accountability; acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the Head Teacher; monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress; budgetary allocation and control; planning for the long-term future of the school; setting the school’s aims and values, and appointing senior members of staff, including the Head Teacher.

Maybe you would like to be a classroom helper. Classroom helpers volunteer to assist teachers on a regular basis, usually in primary schools. They may be in school for half an hour a week, or perhaps up to half a day. They help with tasks such as listening to pupils read. Reading practice is very labour-intensive, and helpers can make a big difference to teachers and children. It is generally recommended that you assist in a class which isn’t the one your child is in. Perhaps you could help outside the classroom by going on a school outing. This could be a regular weekly trip to the local swimming pool, occasional days out to places of interest, or helping with the football team. You may also be able to help your child’s school by sharing your experiences. Many senior schools have events where parents and local business people come into school to talk about their careers, or to discuss anecdotes about taking part in a notable event or visiting an unusual place. For all but the most fleeting of visits, you will need to undergo a police background check before you can be part of school activities. It is a standard procedure carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) in England and Wales, and by Disclosure Scotland in Scotland. Many school volunteers not only benefit from a sense of pride and fulfilment at having assisted, but also find that they improve their skills and enhance their CVs. Susan Brookes-Morris

Book reviews

A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett My Animals and Other Family – Claire Balding In recent years, Claire Balding has slowly risen to ‘national treasure’ status. Not only does she know a great deal about sport, but she seems to have the knack of showing genuine interest in everything she presents and everyone she talks to. It all appears to be such good fun. This same personality shines out from her autobiography, which covers her childhood, school, university, and the very beginnings of her broadcasting career. As the title suggests, it is the animals who take centre stage in a world that revolves around horses and dogs. Each chapter is based on a particular character, from Candy the boxer dog who was her very first friend, to some of the greats of the equine world who passed through her father’s racing yard. From the first, this feels like a very honest book. Balding does not paint over her faults – she shows them very clearly and is not afraid of being the butt of the joke. The sections which deal with her relationship with her younger brother Andrew are likely to feel very familiar to anyone who has ever coerced a younger sibling into doing something they really knew they should not, or indeed to anyone who has ever been that unfortunate younger sibling! Her school life is particularly well told too, as she documents the mistakes she made and the way in which she seized the second chance she was given. The most memorable and touching aspect though, is the passion for the animals who give the book its structure. As well as telling the story

of her early life, Balding offers a fascinating insight into the life of a racing yard, and the highs and lows of competitive horse racing when your father is a champion trainer. Beautifully illustrated and always well written, this is an excellent read for anyone interested in sport, animals or even just people. No-Bot: The Robot with No Bottom – Sue Hendra Sue Hendra’s name will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever come across Barry, Norman or Keith. Like the heroes above, Bernard the Robot has an unusual problem. Can he find the solution? Can he find his bottom? Barry, of course, is The Fish with Fingers; Norman is The Slug with the Silly Shell, and Keith is The Cat with a Magic Hat. If you haven’t met them before, you are in for a treat. Now Bernard is set to join them after an unfortunate incident, in which he leaves his bottom behind on a swing at the park. At first he doesn’t notice, but by the time he does his bottom is long gone – it has been a bird’s nest, a drum and who knows what else! Sadly for Bernard his friends can’t help, and when they advise him to sit down, he has to remind them that he isn’t a robot any more – he is a no-bot. Will he find his bottom before it is too late? This book appeals to young children on so many levels. For a start, it is about bottoms. There is a ‘hide and seek’ element of trying to spot Bernard’s bottom, and even a dance to do. I challenge you to read without giggling!

By My Side by Alice Peterson Bestselling author Alice Peterson’s new book, By My Side, is a heartwarming love story that will make you laugh, cry and fall in love with the characters, especially Ticket, the golden Labrador assistance dog. Cass Brooks loves her job, her boyfriend Sean, her life. Until, leaving home one morning, she steps into the path of a truck. When she wakes up, she can’t walk. And

22

suddenly all her hopes and dreams, the plans she’d made with Sean, seem out of her reach. But then fate intervenes again. Cass meets Ticket, a loyal golden Labrador who refuses to leave her side. And on a flight to Colorado, she sits next to Charlie, who believes he can show her a life full of possibilities, if only she’ll let him… Author Alice Peterson was inspired having met Canine Partners (see page 8). You can buy the book on their website for just £7.99: www.caninepartners.org.uk/shop/gifts/ by-my-side-by-alice-peterson

T

he Wey & Arun Canal Trust is assembling its very own ‘time team’ for an archaeological ‘mini-dig’ at Gosden Meadow, Bramley, with the goal of uncovering hidden features of Gosden aqueduct, a structure of 1815 which carried the Wey & Arun Canal over the Cranleigh Waters. The excavation will be directed by Martin Cook, an archaeologist of vast experience in such projects on England’s inland waterways. The team of volunteer diggers will be hard at work by the second week of September and the excavation will remain open until

Sunday 15th September, giving participants in the Trust’s Heritage Open Days’ guided walk from Shalford to Bramley on 15th September the chance to view what comes to light. No charge is made for participation in the guided walk, but it is essential to book your place through Guildford Tourist Office (01483) 44433. ‘Music for a Summer’s Evening’

F

ollowing the very successful musical evening held last year in the ancient church of St Nicolas at Itchingfield, the church Fundraising Committee decided that on Thursday 18th July this year the experience could be repeated, but with a slightly different slant. So, despite the hot weather and the scaffolding surrounding the building, over 80 people sat in the cool calm of the mediaeval church, enjoying the friendly atmosphere, summer floral arrangements and atmospheric candlelight, awaiting the music. We were not disappointed. The audience was transported to Spain with superb Spanish classical guitar medleys performed by Mark Jennings. The solos included the intense and complex guitar rhythms of Isaac Albeniz, Joaquin Rodrigo, The Deer Hunter theme by Stanley Myers and for contrast, Bach fugue BWV 1000. After a short break the musical images changed. We were warmly and endearingly entertained by singer and guitarist Julie Roberts and the amazing double bassist Gary Holder; two members of the local trio ‘Airs & Disgraces’. Their programme

ADC APPLIANCES APPLIANCE REPAIRS Repairs & Service to all makes of: Electric Cookers, Dishwashers, Tumble-dryers, Integrated Appliances, Washing Machines, American Top Loaders

included light jazz, well known ‘foot tapping’ rhythm and blues and popular folk music, ending with the classic Route 66. Following the much enjoyed music, a short presentation was made by Maurice Nicholls on behalf of all at St Nicolas; thanking the performers for providing such a wonderfully entertaining evening and for the generosity and time of so many people from the parish and elsewhere. Special mention was made of David and Pippa Heritage from Barns Green Village Store for donating the wine, Mags Fisher for working tirelessly to ensure that the event went ahead and Pippa McBean who initiated the plans for the organisation of the evening. The audience were then served wine and canapés. A magical summer’s evening in a beautiful rural setting. Needless to say, the organisers were asked to hold another similar event – soon. Willie Austen & his band help the Mary How Trust celebrate 25 years of health screening

O

ver 300 people joined the Mary How Trust for a rousing performance by Willie Austen and his band on Saturday 20th July at West Chiltington Golf Club, many of these having seen it publicised in July’s Village Tweet. It was a joyful evening, and celebrated 25 years of health screening and the wonderful support that makes it possible. Partygoers came with a spring in their step and danced the night away. One of the charity’s patrons, Rt Hon Nick Herbert MP, with Hurst Brewery together donated a cask of Founder’s Best Bitter. It was a popular fundraiser! The raffle had an irresistible 1st prize: a week in a sea-view apartment in Menorca. And local bakers, Truffles, donated a delicious birthday cake. The Mary How Trust’s Anniversary ‘Wishing

Line’ was on display, filled with special messages from local people and businesses. A team of 30 volunteers helped the party go with a swing. Roanne Moore-Loizides, Marketing & Fundraising Manager of the charity, explains, “We couldn’t have done it without our wonderful volunteers! They were brilliant.” She adds, “I’d like to thank everyone who supported the evening, which raised a fabulous £1,931 net for our health screening work. Thank you for helping us to transform people’s lives!” For further information on the Mary How Trust’s 25th Anniversary and how you can get involved, please contact the Trust on 08452 410956. ell that was a surprise! The young ewe we sadly had to pull a dead lamb out of in February gave birth to a ram lamb at the end of July. He is a chunky little chap and his mum looks so proud. It is very odd, though, as hill sheep naturally have their lambs in February or March but as we leave our ram in all year round we must expect the odd anomaly. The sheep’s fleeces have grown after shearing and so need rounding up and reblowfly prevention treated; Pooch greets the new warm humid weather brings out blowflies like nothing else. Dealing with maggot infested sheep isn’t pleasant for sheep or shepherd so prevention is key to good husbandry; without prompt treatment they can be dead in a couple of days. The 37 piglets are growing well and only one runt. He is a little disabled and we considered his options but he is growing (slowly), running about (strangely) and playing (happily) so we will give him the chance to grow to pork weight. We still

have three sows due to farrow so more little trotters soon and then a break until January. We did reasonably well at The Great Yorkshire Show under heavy competition. We had to leave our best gilt at home due to lameness; thankfully she is OK now but it took a while for her to go sound. We were placed third with our July born boar Travolta and fifth with our little boar Bogart in very large classes so we were pleased. Both will be in the Champion of Champions pot at the Stoneleigh Show and goats at Tedfold I can let you know how we got on next month. We also purchased some Boer goat kids as a foundation breeding herd for meat. So far so good; they have remained in their pen although they have a look in their eyes that worries me a bit. Off now to fill more muddy wallows up. The pigs couldn’t care less that we are on metered water! Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

here is nothing more exciting and often nerve racking than competing on your horse, a chance to bring together all those things you have been taught in lessons and have been practising at home. Whether you compete at local level or affiliated level everyone needs a plan so show days go smoothly and hopefully to plan! Make sure entries are in promptly; it is often cheaper to enter before the show. Dressage and Eventing classes must be entered by the date stated on the schedule, with showing and show jumping you may be able to enter on the day if there is room in the class but beware the queues for the Entries Secretary are often very long! Pack your vehicle the night before if possible; it’s best to write everything down on a checklist and tick it off as you pack it to save you forgetting a vital item. Make sure you take some water from home as water is not always supplied on showgrounds and some horses do not like a strange water supply. Pack a haynet so your horse can have a nibble on the journey and he can have something to keep him occupied if he needs to stand in the lorry or trailer while waiting for classes. Make sure you have adequate breakdown cover and a serviceable spare tyre for your vehicle and trailer. If your horse needs plaiting and is not likely to rub his plaits it’s easiest to plait up the night before saving you time and stress in the morning. Plaits can be covered with a lycra hood to keep them in place and tidy. Popping a light rug on the horse will also help keep him clean on the night before the show. On the morning of the show I like to get the transport ready first and foremost – no point in getting the horse all ready to go and finding the lorry has a flat battery! The horse can be eating his breakfast while you do this. Make sure you have plenty of time to get the horse’s white bits white – a nightmare if you happen to own a grey! Even if you are just popping down to a local dressage or showjumping show it shows good manners to the judges if you have made an effort to present your horse and yourself in a clean and tidy condition, not to

Long hair should always be tied up and inside a hair net. Showing is all about attention to the small details and the enhancement of the overall picture. It’s a good idea to go along to a few county shows to observe and see how the professionals present their horses and how to turn yourself out correctly as a rider. Ringcraft also plays a huge part in showing and knowing how to show off your horse to his best advantage is a skill well worth learning. Many professional show riders and producers offer master classes where riders can go along be ‘judged’ and get many useful tips and pointers to help you really stand out from the crowd. Dressage has strict rules about what tack may or may not be used. Even at local level most dressage competitions are run under British Dressage (BD) rules. Bits must conform to certain types (this information can be found on the BD website) and boots or bandages must not be worn during a test. Martingales are not allowed but breastplates are acceptable. The dressage phase of eventing is run under BD rules. Showjumping tends to be much more relaxed on tack; make sure your horse is comfortable in his tack and do not change bits on the day if you can avoid it. Showjumping has a more glitzy image and there are some really lovely jackets on the market now! But remember to make sure that you are smart and tidy. For eventing and cross-country body protectors are now compulsory, there are many on the market now and are much more flexible and comfortable than ever before. Some people like to use the inflatable jackets on top of the body protector for added protection from injury should the worst happen. I hope you are all having a wonderful summer – we have certainly had some superb weather this year! Until next month, goodbye and stay safe. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. Garden Tweet!

Planning to plant

L

ast month I wrote about garden design, and how to decide on which style you would like to choose for your own garden, and more importantly whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. As promised, in this month’s article we’re focusing on softening the design with planting. Welldesigned gardens are a successful blend of hard and soft landscaping (e.g. paving and plants), but not until recently did it occur to me how you can achieve a great effect with very little in terms of hard landscaping. Whether you are thinking about a new garden, total re-design, or just want to refresh a single border, it is important to draw yourself a planting plan. It’s not as scary as it sounds, and is really just like a large ‘paint by numbers’. A plan will avoid expensive mistakes made by impulse purchases, and will reduce maintenance in the long term. The resulting garden will also look so much fuller, the plants much happier and healthier, and you will feel proud of your creation instead of frustrated with your lack of ability. First of all, begin by enlisting the help of a friend with a tape measure, and get a blueprint of what is there now. Measure the boundaries of the borders – note any trees and hedges, fences and walls, shady spots, and those in full sun too. If you know which way the sun moves around the garden you will have much more success in choosing the right plants. Draw the plan on paper, ideally to scale. 1:50

is a good size for the average garden (where 50cm in reality is 1cm on paper). Then, using a selection different sized coins to draw around, fill the border with circles, starting at the rear of the border with the large shrubs, and work towards the front with herbaceous perennials and annuals. You can then layer bulbs in for extra spring and summer colour. Think about colour, the times of year they flower and the eventual size they will grow to. It’s a good idea to arm yourself with a good plant book, or simply search the internet for inspiration. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Garden Tips: September is a great time to plant, but here are some other jobs you can do at this time of the year: Clip hedges for the final time this year Sow lawn seed to thicken or establish a new lawn Sow the last batch of lettuce Plant some potatoes in the greenhouse for Christmas Net ponds to prevent leaves falling into it Plant spring flowering bulbs

“That Darn Cat!”

L

aika and I are very reluctant pavement walkers. It’s not just the pedestrians, the fellow dog walkers and the traffic that she and I find so restricting. It’s not the fact that I have to oversee every squat and bowel movement on the grassy verges while attempting to look disinterested (impossible when you have to approach the warm ‘treasure’ after extracting a ‘bag’ from a pocket and delicately scooping it up!). It’s not the fact that I mind joining the legions of dog owners who prowl our pavements clutching a leash in one hand and a plastic bag of ‘goodies’ in the other – OK, so I could put the offering in a pocket or shopping bag, couldn’t I? Or better still, I could imitate an ex-neighbour of ours in Guildford who walked the streets with his dachshund armed with a brush and a long-handled dust pan invariably replete with poop! No, the problem that Laika and I have is that, adjacent to our pavements, lie houses and buildings which appear to be infested with cats! Ginger cats, tabby cats, tortoiseshell cats and black cats – lurking under bushes, reposing under cars and lying lazily in porches or on garden shed

roofs at this time of year. How different it is in winter when the streets are abandoned and the feline species seek warmth and comfort on laps, beds or by the fire. These cats ruin our walks. Imagine taking a convivial stroll with your dog when suddenly your arm is practically separated from your torso! That’s what happens when 38 kg of fur and muscle takes off in pursuit of a moggie. Of course, the answer is to pre-empt the situation and therefore I scan the route ahead seeking out those feline teasers before Laika can see them, looking to avoid the transient excitation (shock) as my arm accelerates behind the force that is Laika. Pleasant strolls are wrecked by felis catus who torment Laika sending her burrowing into hedgerows, diving into shrubbery and attempting to scale walls. There is a black cat which appears to recognize that Laika is on a lead and brazenly sits still as the powerful, furry fury at the end of my arm attempts to make contact. Thank God for the fields, woods and WSCC! Ron Myal

Keeping you safe and sound online – Part 2 Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

F

ollowing on from last month’s column in which we looked at how to avoid some of the more common dangers of being online and using email. This month we look at how you can put some of your online safety in the hands of antivirus programmes as we highlight some of the best antivirus software programmes available for free. Most people know about the main antivirus programmes, but one of the problems with these is that they are expensive and unwieldy – by this we mean they are such large programmes that they slow your PC down immensely. You know the programmes we are talking about! However, there are plenty of antivirus programmes out there that you can get for free and which do a great job. Here is brief overview of three of them. 1. Avast Free Antivirus. This is one of the most popular security tools around. It’s simple to install with a straightforward interface that makes it easy to use and a quick first scan which should identify any potential threats on your PC, and this all has minimal impact on your system performance. Avast Free has some useful extras, too. For instance, a Software Updater alerts you to program updates you’ve missed, while its Browser Cleanup

tool provides a simple way to remove unwanted addons from your browsers. 2. Panda Cloud Antivirus Free. Small and simple, Panda Cloud Antivirus is a lightweight tool which provides free real-time antivirus protection, and can be used alongside many other security tools without problems. It’s the free version of a commercial product, and so has a few missing features. But the core antivirus protection remains the same. And while that doesn’t deliver the top detection rates, independent testing shows it’s very capable. 3. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free. If you think your PC has been infected by something, but your regular antivirus tool hasn’t raised an alert then this programme is what you need. It’s an excellent real-time scanner, which can quickly find and remove all kinds of threats and beginners won’t have any trouble using Anti-Malware. Just launch the program, click Scan and it’ll immediately begin checking your system. If you think you have a virus or malware problem and you can’t seem to fix it, then seek the help of a professional who will be able to help. Bax Computer Services

Come and meet your fire-fighters!

B

illingshurst Fire Station looks forward to welcoming you twice in September. The first is our Open Day on 14th September followed swiftly by the Charity Car Wash on the 21st. The Open Day will see many Fire Service displays including Breathing Apparatus drills and Road Traffic Accident drills. We will have a number of Fire Service vehicles in attendance including our own Fire Engine, the Aerial Ladder Platform, the Technical Rescue unit plus many more. We will be able to talk to all visitors about fire and road safety and let everyone know what we have been doing. There will also be a number of shops, stalls, games and competitions. There is a good chance some kids will get wet and have a

change to take part in Fire Service themed competitions. One week later, we hope to see you for our Charity Car Wash. We hold this event twice a year and profits go to the Firefighers’ charity. This provides essential services for Firefighters, helping us to recover from injury and ensure we can get back to normal as soon as possible. Our last car wash in March saw the highest total in the county. We were delighted to see such support in terrible conditions – it was snowing for most of the day! Thank you all. We hope to meet you all in September and are crossing our fingers for sunny weather. Dan Game Photos: Chip pan fire and RTC demo at last year’s Open Day
