his month’s fantastic news for Village Tweet readers living in Kirdford and Wisborough Green is the withdrawal of Celtique Energie’s plans to drill exploratory wells for oil and gas. It is not a complete victory, however – the proposed demolition of Boxal Bridge by WSCC Highways Dept remains, see page 20. And, as you can read on page 10, while Kirdford and Wisborough Green are safe at last, Billingshurst is now under threat from Celtique Energie. Do try and come along to Keep Billingshurst Frack Free’s meeting at the Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre on 10th April at 7pm.

Easy Easter Cup Cakes These cute cup cakes make an Easter treat – easy to make and easy to eat! Makes: 12 cupcakes Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Cooling time: 15 minutes Decorating time: 10-15 minutes

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4. 2. Place the butter in a mixing bowl with the sugar. Beat until light and fluffy. Then gradually beat in the eggs, a little at a time. 3. Sift the flour and cocoa powder (if using) into the mixture. Fold them in with a large spoon until combined. Use a teaspoon to dollop the mixture into silicon cases, or paper cases, lining a patty tin. 4. Bake in the preheated oven until well risen and firm to touch, 15 to 20 minutes. Keep checking them so they don’t burn. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. 5. To make the buttercream topping, place the butter in a bowl. Sift in the icing sugar and cocoa, and then add the milk and vanilla essence. Beat until really light and fluffy. 6. When the cupcakes have cooled, ice the cakes. It looks good if the icing is piped into a nest shape, but this is optional. Place chocolate eggs in the centre of each nest to decorate.

INGREDIENTS

For the cakes 115g (4oz) softened butter or margarine 115g (4oz) caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 85g (3oz) self-raising flour 25g (1oz) cocoa powder (optional – for chocolate cupcakes) For the topping 85g (3oz) softened butter 175g (5oz) icing sugar 25g (1oz) cocoa powder 1 tablespoon milk 3 drops vanilla extract 2 packets mini eggs

BUCK’S FIZZ AND BOWLS Have you ever thought of playing lawn bowls? If so, why not come along to your local club here in Billingshurst and have a go! From 18 to 80, ladies or gents, it is a great way to meet new friends, get a bit of exercise and enjoy the friendly competition of the sport. No experience is necessary, just the desire to have some fun. Our Open Day is on Saturday 18th April and the activities start at 2.00pm and you are most welcome to come along. There will be current members there to meet you and show you the ropes, and all equipment is provided free of charge. There will be competitions to enter, a raffle and a Buck’s Fizz (or cup of tea/coffee if you prefer) to celebrate the start of the 2015 season. If you cannot make it to the opening day, we hold “meet and greet” sessions on weekdays (except Wednesday) evenings throughout May from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. All equipment is supplied free to get you started, but a pair of flat soled shoes would be ideal. Potential new members are welcome to four trial sessions without charge. The Club has several sets of bowls of different sizes and weights for trial sessions; we also have a few pairs of flat-soled shoes. So do not be tempted to rush off and buy bowls. Try ours first to gauge your particular needs and make full use of the free trial sessions, members will be very happy to advise you. During the season the green is open every day and there are no green fees. Practice sessions (roll-ups) are free and possible at any time, weather and maintenance commitments permitting. There is also a reduced subscription for the first year for new members. All Club matches are friendlies and played against other Clubs who have a policy of fielding mixed teams of ladies and gentlemen. The Club also participates in County organised competitions, local tournaments and run a number of internal Club competitions. We also have a number of “out of season” Social events. Our green is situated behind Station Road Gardens and the entrance is close to the South West corner of the gardens near the footpath to Myrtle/Natts Lanes, alternatively there is another gate at the far end of the swimming pool. Disc parking is available in the Leisure Centre Car Park.

Keep Billingshurst Frack Free

A

growing number of concerned local residents are campaigning against Celtique Energie and its plans for exploratory drilling for conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons at a site close to Billingshurst. Already the Broadford Bridge site, at Woodbarn Farm on Adversane Lane, looks an eyesore with barbed-wire fencing wound around tall gates, but this is nothing compared to what will happen when plans go ahead. Many large trucks carrying the equipment needed will be thundering along country lanes and past schools, increasing local traffic potentially by 50 per cent or more. Then, depending on what is discovered at the exploratory stage, fracking (hydraulic fracturing of the earth to release oil and gas from deep underground) could take place, bringing with it many adverse effects to our health and environment. This controversial technique uses millions of litres of fresh water – which in a droughtprone area we do not have – mixed with various

hazardous chemicals. This toxic soup is then blasted, at high pressure, deep into the earth to release whatever oil or gas is locked away, potentially polluting ground water and soil. It is not a tried and tested, safe method. All gas wells leak eventually, and the so-called ‘Gold Standard’ safety regulations have not been seen at previous exploratory drilling sites in the UK. Plus, unwanted methane gas is burned off in flares causing light and air pollution, adding to climate change. All these environmental and health risks are unnecessary when renewable energy is the clean way forward for our energy needs. For many people, in Billingshurst and beyond, it’s a gamble too far. After a successful Mother’s Day Mothers Meeting where many local families made art to show their concern and took it to the site to raise awareness, Keep Billingshurst Frack Free are holding a public meeting at the Community Centre on Friday 10th April, from 7pm. Come along and get informed! Find us on Facebook too – Keep Billingshurst Frack Free. Emily Anderson

In 2015 Cranleigh Arts Centre celebrates the 25th anniversary of signing the lease to convert the old Cranleigh National School buildings into a Community Arts Centre and over the past 25 years the Arts Centre has become an established hub for recreation and creativity in Cranleigh village. If any Village Tweet readers would like to know more about the project or be part of it by offering a memory about their time at the school more information can be obtained from me, Gillian Collins the project co-ordinator by email on cranleigh@cranleighartscentre.org or by telephoning the Arts Centre on (01483) 278000 and leaving a message and I will call you back. Easter / Health and wellbeing

Who put the chocolate into Easter Eggs?

E

aster without chocolate eggs would be like Christmas without presents. Simply unthinkable! And yet the tradition of giving chocolate at Easter is relatively recent, dating back 120 years or so to the late 19th century. Easter is a Christian festival that commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Occurring in spring, which is regarded as a time of renewal and birth by many faiths and cultures, the egg has been used as a symbol of birth and fertility since well before Christianity. Originally painted bright colours to celebrate the sunlight of spring, decorating and colouring eggs became popular during the Middle Ages, when they were dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ. Forbidden as a food during Lent, eggs were hardboiled, decorated and then given to children at Easter as good luck symbols. In the 18th century, pasteboard or papier maché eggs with small gifts inside became popular and by the 19th century these had evolved into cardboard eggs covered in silk, lace or velvet and fastened with ribbon. Fabergé produced its first egg in 1883, and elaborate eggs made from silver and gold, ivory and porcelain. Some inlaid with jewels followed. The first chocolate eggs were made in France and Germany in the early 19th century, not long after the first eating chocolate was invented (prior to this chocolate was enjoyed as a drink). But the

chocolate couldn’t be moulded and early eggs were solid. Chocolate eggs didn’t truly gain in popularity until Cadbury entered the market in 1875. Their early eggs were made from dark chocolate with a plain, smooth surface. Filled with dragées (small, hard sweets), they were decorated with chocolate piping and marzipan flowers. The range gradually increased until in 1893 Cadbury was producing 19 different lines, but it wasn’t until 1905 when the company introduced Dairy Milk that the sales of Easter eggs really received a boost. All-chocolate eggs did not immediately replace the novelty eggs of the Victorian era, however, and Cadbury continued to produce a fancy cardboard egg filled with chocolates until the early 1930s. The first crème eggs appeared in 1923 as a forerunner to the Cadbury Creme Egg, launched in 1971 and initially only available at Easter. An instant hit, it has now become Cadbury’s most popular egg, with over 500 million being made every year, though shell eggs still form the largest sector of the Easter egg market. So, we have Cadbury to thank for our modern day Easter egg, and in particular their invention of Dairy Milk. How ironic, then, that this year they should decide to replace the nation’s favourite chocolate on their most popular egg with an alternative! Will Easter ever be the same again? Debbie Singh-Bhatti

HDC opposes second runway at Gatwick

H

orsham District Council has declared its strong opposition to the building of a second runway at Gatwick Airport. At an Extraordinary Council Meeting on 21st January 2015, councillors voted overwhelming in support of the Leader’s response to the Airports Commission consultation work on airport expansion to include a second runway at Gatwick Airport, stating that after full consideration of the Gatwick option, the council has concluded that because of the very considerable detrimental effect a second runway is likely to have on the physical, social and economic environment of the district, it strongly opposes the Gatwick expansion option. In his response, Cllr Dawe made it quite clear that if a second runway were to be built at Gatwick, the effects would have a fundamental impact on the general character of the district and on the lives of everyone who works and lives there. Commenting further on the Airports Commission’s option to expand Gatwick he said, “Clearly, a new runway would bring with it additional employment both directly and indirectly. We are told it would generate up to 23,000 jobs inside 15 years and create over 18,000 additional households. Such numbers

would bring with them new pressures – pressure for more homes and business space, pressure on our roads and railways and pressure on our schools, doctors surgeries and hospitals. “It would also bring with it noise – noise from aircraft taking off and landing affecting communities close to the Airport and also noise from overflying aircraft that would affect communities living further afield. “It is for these many reasons that I do not believe the council can support the proposals for a second runway and the Commission’s consultation is the opportunity for us to make our views known.” The council will continue to work with other local authorities in the Gatwick area and liaise with local community and business groups, Gatwick Airport and the Commission to ensure that issues of concern to the council are being fully addressed. Weald School students visit Iceland

ust before half term a group of students from The Weald School’s Years 12 and 13 ventured to Iceland for a Key Stage 5 enrichment visit linked to their studies in Geography, Photography and Travel and Tourism. This was the school’s third visit to Iceland and this year’s visit was organised by Ms Mead and Mr Trotter (Travel & Tourism/Business). Mrs MasingiriTodd (Photography) accompanied the group. The following extracts are by some of the students reflecting on their Icelandic experiences… “From the moment the Iceland residential trip was mentioned as an enrichment opportunity I knew I wanted to participate! Studying Photography as well as Travel and Tourism meant that I would benefit from the visit in a number of ways. Having my teachers from my courses participate on the trip ensured that the visit was always focused on maximising my learning and enriching my experiences in these subject areas.” “One of the biggest highlights of the trip was visiting the Blue Lagoon. Knowing that I was visiting one of the 25 wonders of the world was an amazing experience. We visited the Blue Lagoon on the first day and it was completely awe-inspiring! This set the tone for a truly amazing trip!” “In Travel and Tourism I am just about to study a unit focusing on the European Travel Market. A key

ADC APPLIANCES APPLIANCE REPAIRS Repairs & Service to all makes of: Electric Cookers, Dishwashers, Tumble-dryers, Integrated Appliances, Washing Machines, American Top Loaders

part of this unit considers the development and growth in tourism to Iceland. The visit presented the opportunity to see for myself exactly how the country has developed facilities and enhanced attractions to cope with the growing volume of tourists. Tourism is currently the biggest contributor to economic growth in Iceland and with record levels of tourists visiting the country in 2014 it was interesting to see how the country has capitalised on this opportunity. Throughout the visit our Tour Guide, Mr Trotter and Ms Mead were always keen to discuss and contemplate issues relating to the impact of tourism in Iceland.” “It wasn’t until I actually arrived in Iceland that I realised just how amazing the landscape was going to be to photograph. With Mrs Masingiri-Todd on hand to give advice and guidance I was able to experiment with different photographic styles in a landscape like no other.” “The visit also presented many memorable moments, from learning to speak Icelandic to witnessing the teachers being blasted by the wind on the beach! I would thoroughly recommend the visit to anyone currently in Year 10 and Year 11 who will have the opportunity to participate on the next Sixth Form enrichment trip to Iceland in 2017.” Contributions from Alex Killner, Alex Cooper, Chloe Regelous and Darcy Kimber

Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ Celtique Energie throws in the towel and leaves the villages of Fernhurst and Kirdford/Wisborough Green alone

O

n Wednesday 11th March, we learned that Celtique Energie had thrown in the towel and pulled out of both sites they proposed to drill exploratory wells for oil/gas namely at Fernhurst in the National Park and on land to the south of Boxal Bridge on the borders of the Parishes of Kirdford and Wisborough Green which lies some 500 metres outside the SDNP. In their press release Celtique Energie said that it would not lodge an appeal against the refusal of planning permission by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) to drill an exploration well near Fernhurst, West Sussex. Celtique Energie has also decided to withdraw the appeal against West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) decision to refuse planning permission for the drilling of a single exploration well. Their press release refers to the constraints applying to their license (PEDL 234) and the timing of the Public Inquiry but these don’t stand up to scrutiny. They do not refer to falling oil prices, the strength of our arguments nor to the determined opposition mounted by local residents. If this application had been successful it would have led to industrialisation of this area.

As John Buchanan said at the meeting held by the SDNP to decide on the Fernhurst application, if we did need this resource – and this is questionable – we would not start in one of the most beautiful, least disturbed parts of England. THANK YOU to all of you who have helped to bring about this retreat. Celtique Energie’s 11th March press release can be found at: www.celtiqueenergie.com/article.php?id=57. However, it’s not all good news. Celtique Energie have not ceased operations at Broadford Bridge where they were given permission by WSCC to drill, have cleared the site and are preparing to receive the drill. Boxal Bridge remains under threat. Petition To save Boxal Bridge from demolition http://epetition.westsussex.public-i.tv/ epetition_core/view/boxalbridge. Anyone signing must have a West Sussex postcode. I urge people to continue to watch the KKWG website www.no-drilling.co.uk for further updates or ring Jill Sutcliffe on (01403) 700395. Little Tweeters! / About the house

M.I.A.

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

I

t was Sam’s job in the evening to shut the chickens in as it grew dark. Although he was good at remembering, one day he had to be reminded as the family sat down for dinner. He rushed out, did the job and came back in because Nanny was hurrying him. It wasn’t until about two hours later he said to Nanny, “There were only three chickens, Nan”. Needless to say Nanny was not happy and gave him a bit of a rocket about not telling her earlier, and went out, torch in hand, to look for the lone black chicken. This was a rather naughty chicken who had in the past flown out of the chicken run. But Nanny found no chicken. There were foxes about and Nanny was sure the fox had got her. Having to tell Anne her chicken had disappeared was a daunting task, but had to be done, A distant memory. and was. Nanny felt very sad. The next morning, Nanny started the feed run, and as she came over to the pig pen, Dottie and Twiglet were ‘hard Dottie plays waiting for her as usual, snorting and grumbling away. What was not usual was the black chicken also waiting for her breakfast. She had given up waiting the night before and decided to shelter the night with the pigs who didn’t seem to mind. She strutted about a bit, hopped over the pig pen fence, marched into the chicken run and began pecking around as if nothing had happened. Needless to say everyone was pleased she had survived the night. Well, by chance the very next day Gary came into the kitchen in the evening. “Have you seen Jasper?” he asked. “He didn’t come in for breakfast.” But nobody had seen the missing cat. He didn’t come home for his dinner either. Or breakfast the following day. As Jasper had disappeared for a few days another time (he was now the master hunter, now James was gone. RIP), nobody was too worried for a day or two. After three days though, Gary was getting worried. He searched all the stables and sheds on the property. No Jasper. He walked the paddocks which were Jasper’s hunting ground. No Jasper. Everyone was getting very concerned now. By Monday morning while Gary was glued to the computer on a Village Tweet deadline,

Nanny set off armed with raincoat, rain hat and sturdy wellington boots – and she needed them! It rained all morning. First she went through the hedge to next doors’ place and searched there. No Jasper. She went over to the horse farm next door and talked to the people there. No Jasper. She waded through the rough bushes and mud which led to an industrial area over the back. No Jasper. She even walked along the A272 searching for dead bodies. Nothing. She was getting pretty tired by now. She thought, “I’ll just go along to the properties over behind the big house and then go home.” She met Sally and her friend on the way. They encouraged her to talk to the other people who lived down that driveway. Although she felt shy, Nanny knocked on one Until next time… door and the lady there was very nice and offered to get in touch with the people who had totheget’stables next door. After thanking her Nanny went to the property which backed into their own little farm, the final place in a very big circle. There was no one home. Nanny was deadbeat, so she thought the people wouldn’t mind too much if she looked in their garden… As she went through the gate she noticed an outbuilding with a largish window which she looked through. Nothing again, but Nanny called out “Jasper” as she walked away feeling very sad and disappointed. Then it came. A funny noise. “What was that?” she asked herself. She hurriedly turned back and called again. To her delight and happiness there he was at the window. “I want to come home,” he meowed. But he had to wait till the people came home and unlocked the door. Later she retrieved the hungry and miserable cat. The people were very understanding and were pleased that Jasper had been found. In fact Gary and everyone on the small farm were very glad to have their little cat home and unharmed. And none as happy as Jasper to be back home to two square meals a day and a comfy bed or two to sleep on. He rather thought he might be a bit more careful next time he decided to have a snooze somewhere else. Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Quality vs Quantity One of the main focuses of our business is ensuring we introduce the right property to the right buyer. It sounds simple enough, it’s actually the difference between an estate agent actively selling a property or waiting for a buyer to come and buy. A common misconception is that people feel submitting a property online and advertising in a High Street agent’s window is satisfactory. Expectations that viewers will simply view, make an offer and then move in are most people’s feeling. Ultimately, if agents simply wait for a response to their advertising it usually produces numerous viewers attending but realising the accommodation or location is not right for them fundamentally. Or the opposite, no viewers arrive at all. We tend to handle this differently, having good conversations about the detail of a prospective buyer’s wants and needs. Introducing the features of a property, discussing how they would benefit the buyer in relation to their criteria. The marketing process can take several weeks, so logistically we try to show viewers at a set prearranged time each week. This makes it easier for life to go on as normal, rather than having to prepare for viewings at the drop of a hat. Our vendors respond positively to this approach for various different reasons. Most share our ethos; it is better to have quality viewings from potential buyers whose position and criteria have been clarified, than simply have a continual stream of speculative viewings. We definitely favour quality over quantity. By Stewart Cracknell

Success in O

We are delighted to welcome to the village a family that have moved from South East London. We are confident they will enjoy a brilliant quality of life in this lovely, quiet village cul-de-sac that is conveniently located for access to the railway station and High Street. The property, which came to the market with Cracknell & Pitt-Draffen in autumn 2014, was easy to present in terms of the particulars of sale. Nestled in the corner of the cul-de-sac with a beautiful backdrop of mature trees and with spacious accommodation including a double floor extension, the accommodation is the perfect long-term family home. Our selling clients were pleased that we captured the essence of their home within our marketing material. Our purchasers originally registered their interest in property for sale in West Sussex by registering in our Avendre office in Horsham. Megan introduced them to the range of places we had on our books at the time, but this property clearly stood out. They arranged a viewing for the

Ostlers View very next day and the rest is history. As the sales process went ahead, it was apparent that some of the estate agents and conveyance solicitors in the chain behind were less than proactive and we bridged the gap by enthusiastically following up on all aspects of the chain, ensuring that everybody was communicating and aware of the status of the various parts of the transaction as a whole. This is another case whereby both vendor and purchaser made a point of commenting that the team at Cracknell & Pitt-Draffen clearly stood out from the other companies involved. Attention to detail and good, clear communication helped us to reach a satisfactory completion for all parties. We look forward to sharing the village with our new neighbours and are delighted that the vendors are staying local in Billingshurst too.

Our team, all still present and correct

Left to right: Hannah Glaysher, Beverley Wigby, Lisa Falkner and Layla Sussex with Stewart Cracknell.

Well that is the end of another successful quarter, it’s nearly summer already, thankfully! As the new year unfolds, it may be natural to see some change of personnel within local estate agents’ teams. We feel there’s no substitute for continuity and consistency. We are delighted that we have the same team in place and that each of us enjoys the day-to-day business of working in the village we live in. Please feel free to pop in and meet the team, we’ll be pleased to get the kettle on.

Billingshurst Primary School hosts a WW2 tea-dance

F

ollowing last year’s touching commemorations to mark the centenary of the start of World War 1, Billingshurst Primary School’s Year 6 pupils have been studying the World Wars over the last term. On the theme of Remembrance, the children took a detailed look at the politics and social history of the period, with a particular focus on the Second World War. The topic culminated in a World War 2 tea party for local elderly residents, some of whom lived through the War as children. Guests were invited to an afternoon of tea, cakes and entertainment provided by the pupils. Jengers Craft Bakery in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst, kindly donated an assortment of buns and pastries while the children

put on a performance including a good old-fashioned wartime sing-along. During the event the children spoke to their guests about their memories of the War which really brought the subject to life and provided an invaluable opportunity to hear from those with first-hand experience. Mark Sheath, the owner of Jengers Craft Bakery commented: “We were honoured to be involved in this event and play some part in helping the pupils to learn, understand and mark the Second World War with our local residents. It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon with lots of singing and a nostalgic look-back at traditional tea dances.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA

Project Pleasure

A

pril is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started… Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant three or four in a 12" (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a coldframe they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form. Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6" (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4" (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and

remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy. Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy. Rachel Leverton

“Hello, um, er…” John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

have a suggestion to make… It is in regards to the fact that as many of us get older we find that there is one thing that starts to become something of a problem. In my case I must confess that it has been bugging me for many a year. It’s the ability to remember people’s names. Now, my suggestion may be a tad provocative, but, here goes… It seems to me from what I read and watch on the media that the art of tattooing has become ever more popular among the population. Once upon a time it was more or less confined to sailors and the young who felt the need to decorate themselves. Now the trend appears to be widespread amongst a far greater spread of folk from all walks of life. So, why not have all children , once they reach adolescence (that would appear to be around the age of eight nowadays) tattooed with their names across their foreheads. Drastic eh? But think of how many problems would be solved. For a start it would put an instant brake on any parent burdening a child with any name that extended beyond seven or eight letters. To emblazon them with some of the more exotic modern names could prove a problem unless they could be shortened, or it may well require a leap in human evolution to double the size of modern man’s head for starters. A simple Bill, Fred, Jill, Mary, etc would surely make life a lot easier. Once upon a time it was possible to avoid this problem altogether. On greeting or leaving an acquaintance that you had failed to place a name to, you could fall back on the reliable mate, love, lass, chuck, etc. Alas, in some quarters that seems now to be severely frowned upon as sexist or impolite. Of course, on formal occasions the terms ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ are appropriate and I’m not advocating a

rejection of such an address when the time or place demands such, but often a friendly term of endearment does much to raise the spirits. All this, however, does not address my problem: remembering names. People who can be quite close to me even. The name lurks on the edges of my mind, hiding in a misty veil, promising to progress to the tip of my tongue and then stubbornly refusing to step forward and be identified. You all must have been there at one time or another. Those of you who suffer this mental aberration as I do will surely have had the experience where, as you walk along the road, you espy coming towards you a very familiar face. You know them well. Your mind races, you seek inspiration from the sky and all points west, but you know you are never going to recall their name until, inevitably, two minutes after you have parted. They stop and you smile a friendly smile, open your mouth and, if you are like me, utter, “Hello mate/love.” The reckoning comes in the reply. “Hello, John. How are you?” This is the point where you are only too aware that your brain is in retirement too. It has ceased to function in a normal way and is now on a go-slow that in all probability is irreversible. That is why my suggestion could prove to be a complete vote winner to those of us who suffer. In fact if a candidate should have the nerve to include such a proposal in their manifesto for the coming election, I have just the smidgin of an idea that it could just see them through. Perhaps. Of course I am writing this missive with tongue in cheek but the more I think about it, the more the idea does appeal. There are a few minor snags of course. Letter size and colour would have to be agreed and it might also mean groping for your reading glasses as surreptitiously as possible as you made your final approach. There again it may be dark, or it could be a woman with a large fringe… Darn it, the problems are starting again! John Nash

Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative

W

hat has been happening in the Loxwood Community Garden areas during the winter months? We have been very busy and have not let the grass grow under our feet. Quite a few changes have taken place in both of the areas we look after, below is a brief summary of what changes have taken place. Diamond Jubilee Garden. At the moment the Diamond Jubilee Garden is looking very tidy and is about to burst into bloom. We have crocus, iris, daffodil and winter honeysuckle in flower at the moment. You will have noticed we now have two new chainsaw-carved southdown lambs who have joined the flock. As well as this, we have a newly planted alpine bed, containing many spring flowering alpines and bulbs. North Hall Woodland. The regeneration of the woodland at North Hall has now been completed. This will open up the area to allow many new wildflowers to flourish. We are looking forward to a carpet of bluebells in the spring. Over the last five years, we have managed to clear away 40 to 50 years’ worth of overgrown hazel and willow, which we will be coppicing on a regular annual basis to keep the village

supplied with beanpoles and peasticks. North Hall Orchard. In the North Hall orchard area, we have added an oak framed information board which details all 38 fruit trees planted in the orchard which will be a permanent record of the variety of tree and their usage. We would like to thank The Harwood Group for the donation of the information board and Mr Peter Winney for making the frame and shaping the posts. While on the subject of thanks, we would like to thank one of our local residents who very kindly donated one of the lambs to our Initiative as well as Maurice Bacon from the Loxwood Joust who has also made a donation to our cause. To events to look forward to during the summer months, on Friday 3rd July we will again be holding our very popular members’ barbecue in the Jubilee Garden and on Sunday 20th September we are going to arrange a family picnic in the grounds of North Hall. Finnishing up at Knepp

hortly after being tagged here in February 2014, the woodcock named ‘Knepp’ embarked on an epic journey travelling nearly 2,500km through Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia before finally settling in Finland, where she spent the breeding season. The 9.5g satellite tags have solarpowered batteries, so it’s not a surprise that we ceased to receive any location updates from September onwards. Then, one sunny day in February the tag recharged, and ‘Knepp’ was the first woodcock of 20 to break the silence and send new data. ‘Knepp’ had survived the arduous autumn migration, returning to spend the winter here, in the very same field in which she was tagged. The woodcock is a cryptic, elusive wader adapted for a life in woodland and fields (although it was once thought that woodcocks spent their summers on the moon!) The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) estimates that in Britain we have a resident breeding population of

78,000 males and a total wintering population that could number 1.5 million birds in some years. Winter populations have, however, shown a decline, so the woodcock is now recognised as a bird of conservation concern. In contrast, populations of woodcock on the Knepp Estate have increased dramatically over the past decade due to the rewilding project and the creation of a rich mosaic of different habitats including insect-rich pastures and scrubby areas for roosting – the perfect wintering habitat for woodcock. You can follow ‘Knepp’ on her journey back to Finland, which is likely to begin sometime in April, on the GWCT website: www.woodcockwatch.com/blog.php Why not come on one of our forthcoming dusk safaris, where you might even see the elusive woodcock. Take a look on our website for more details: www.kneppsafaris.co.uk/safaris. Penny Green, Ecologist, Knepp Estate Re-wilding Project

Barking Mad launches in RH13 & RH14

W

e are delighted to announce that Barking Mad, the UK’s favourite alternative to kennels, has just opened its Worthing branch, which covers RH13 and RH14. We’ve been arranging ‘home-from-home’ dog holidays for over 15 years and firmly believe that dogs deserve a holiday too when their owners are away! Our customers’ dogs are our priority – we take the time to get to know them and understand their requirements so that we can match them with loving ‘host’ families who provide a caring home environment, similar to their own, where all their existing routines are maintained. Most importantly, they will receive plenty of love and attention! We take great care to ensure that the criteria for both host and dog are suitably matched, so when you book a Barking Mad holiday, you can be confident This is what one of our hosts says: “We’ve had a great time with some fantastic dogs to look after. They arrive with everything they need for their holiday and quickly make themselves at home – we can’t wait for the next Barking Mad dog to arrive.”

that your dog is going to have as good a time as you – although secretly we hope it’s even better! Our fantastic host families are at the heart of our business and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them. They enjoy all the benefits of dog companionship without any of the full-time emotional or financial commitments, plus they receive full support from us 24/7. We are now looking to recruit additional host families to keep up with demand. You need to be an experienced dog lover (with or without a friendly dog yourself) with time on your hands, a secure garden and plenty of love to give! We want to hear from retired people, families, home workers – anyone who has the time to care for a dog occasionally. We’re particularly keen to hear from people who would be happy to look after bigger dogs – they need holidays too! For further information please contact Gloria King on (01403) 800213 or email gloria.king@barkingmad.uk.com or visit our website: www.barkingmad.uk.com Photo: Gloria King with Archie

Feeding for weight control

S

pring is finally here and while the warm days and long evenings often mean lots of extra riding those horse owners with good doers start to worry about their horse’s waistline once the spring grass starts to rush through in earnest. Some horses have a tendency to put on weight at the mere sniff of spring grass and these animals have to be managed very carefully to prevent the onset of diseases such as Laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). Very often these equines are on a very strict diet and care has to be taken that they are getting all the micro nutrients they need. Overweight horses must never be starved; horses are designed by nature as trickle feeders, wandering miles each day in search of fresh grazing. It is no wonder that domestic horses and ponies kept in smaller areas on good quality grazing tend to put on weight. Horses need fibre to satisfy their need to chew and to keep the gut healthy and prevent ulcers and colic. With the overwight horse or pony it is best to give a forage that is low in sugars. Coarse stalky hay is best especially for native ponies. Good quality oat straw can be utilised to dilute the hay ration, this gives the horse plenty to chew but reduces calories considerably. Grass is often overlooked but is a very relevant part of the horse’s diet. In spring, grass is growing rapidly and is full of sugars. It can easily have a similar calorie content to a conditioning mix and horses on good quality grazing can cosume upto 11kg of grass per day! Overweight equines need to have their grazing limited and preferably be put onto a poorer quality pasture. Grazing muzzles can be helpful as they allow the horse to remain on turnout with their friends and keep excercising while limiting grass intake. Take care to check daily for any rubbing from the muzzle and ensure the horse is comfortable with working a small amount of grass inside the muzzle and can drink easily before leaving him muzzled for longer periods. Electric fencing is another good way to restrict pasture. The best way is to set up a track-style system around the edges of a field to encourage the horse to wander about as much as possible while restricting access to grass.

Horses on resticted grazing will require a balanced diet. A vitamin and mineral supplement should be provided. These can be bought as powders that can be added to a handful of low-calorie chaff, or in pellet form that can be fed from the hand. Feed balancers have increased in popularity during recent times and there are many now formulated specifically for overweight, lamnitis prone and native horses and ponies. Balancers differ from vitamin and mineral supplements in that they provide protein into the diet which will help build and repair muscle tissue which is important in working animals. High-fibre cubes can be fed in a snack ball to mimic trickle feeding and makes meals last longer as well as giving the horse something to do to help prevent boredom if kept in a small area. Hanging up well soaked hay in nets can help too. Remember apples and carrots are quite sugary so opt for more diet-friendly treats such as swede; these can also be bored through and hung up in the stable or from a handy tree branch as a tasty toy. Some feed companies are producing low-sugar feed blocks made of either late-cut meadow grass or Alfalfa. These can be fed whole and horses do seem to enjoy biting away at them. They also make a healthy addition to the diet and add some variety and interest for the horse. Keep a weigh tape handy and use it on a weekly basis to help you keep control of your horse’s waistline. Condition scoring is very helpful too. Why not get together with others at your yard and organise one of the feed companies to bring a weighbridge for the day. This is very imformative and can also be quite and eye opener! Plenty of excersice is another great way of keeping your horse’s weight under control. Do make sure your horse is fit enough for the work asked of him though, if you are struggling for time why not consider getting a sharer to help you with the workload in return for some riding. Until next month, happy horsekeeping. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Fire-fighters charity car wash a great success

T

hank you to everyone that came along to support a great charity in our first car wash of the year last month. We received great generosity from the public for The Fire Fighters Charity which helps fire-fighters and their families when injured or unable to work. If you missed this one, then don’t worry, our next one will be in September, watch this space for further details. We would like to welcome a new recruit to the team this month who is currently undergoing his training. We will officially introduce him in next month’s Village Tweet. This means we now

have a full crew on station which is fantastic. Retained Fire Fighters give so much time and effort to provide a safe community to live in. We are all on call and ready to respond either from work or home. On average all of us give around 100 hours cover a week which when you think about it is a huge amount of time! Thank you to the new guys who have joined us over the last few months and we look forward to helping you further your learning and development within the fire service. ast month we looked at a new product release for Windows, so we thought it only fair to mention an Apple product launch this month. The launch of the new Apple Watch has got techies and geeks around the world all abuzz with excitement. In fact a few of us ‘normies’ are quite interested too. (www.apple.com/uk/watch). So what does a ‘smart watch’ do? Well this one is intended as an add-on for the iPhone and communicates with it via Bluetooth. It will be available in a host of colour cases and some versions of it are expected to retail as high as $17,500 (£11,600) for the 18-karat gold editions, although prices apparently will start from $349 or £230. Apart from telling time, the new watch will activate its display with the simple motion of raising a wrist, can differentiate between a touch and a press, and track a user’s number of steps and other fitness data. A Review of the Council Term 2011 - 2015 Did you know that the term of the Council is four years? On 09 May 2011, 15 Councillors took up office for a 4-year term following a contested election. In that time, Cllr. Paul Berry has been elected by the Council to serve as Chairman every year. The Council has been re-accredited for Quality Status and gained the General Power of Competence. The Council has faced challenging financial times with the reduction in funding from Horsham District Council and in spite of this, has managed to keep increases in the precept to a minimum, whilst continuing to provide support to local organisations and for local projects. The Council is organised into Committees with delegated powers to undertake decisions relating to its finances, property, planning, staff matters and the Billingshurst Centre. The Council started its term taking a pivotal decision on the future of the Billingshurst Centre and agreed to remain the Sole Managing Trustee and take on the day to day management of the Centre. The Centre has gone from strength to strength, and has turned around from a loss making village hall to a financially healthy Community and Conference Centre and focal point for many in our community providing opportunities to learn new skills, undertake training, socialise, exercise, trade and make new friends. The desire of residents to have local authority allotments was realised with the opening of the very popular Manor Fields allotments. A group of committed volunteers led by Mr Keith Brown continue to work to improve and maintain Station Road Gardens for the benefit of all of the community. Children’s play equipment, pathways and landscaping have been installed and plans continue for future improvements. The Parish Council successfully applied for s106 funding for a number of projects including bus shelters in Forge Way, Station Road and Five Oaks, new play equipment at Lower Station Road and Cherry Tree Close and a new skate park in Natts Lane. The Parish Council extended the land at Lower Station Road recreation ground leased to the Tennis Club to enable a new pavilion to be built from s106 funding. The Vice Chairman Cllr. Lesley Wilding is the Council’s lead on flooding in the parish who is working with the National Flood Forum to help alleviate the

misery for those affected by the surface water problems. Pressure on the parish to take more housing, despite the flooding problems, continues. Over the last five years, 943 houses have been permitted on appeal or by Horsham District Council. Despite the General Permitted Development Order, this Council is still making comments on in excess of 100 planning applications a year. In the coming months, Horsham District Council will be pressing ahead with main modifications to their Horsham District Planning Framework and parishioners are urged to continue to make their views known about further development in the parish. The Parish Council has worked with a planning consultant and submitted detailed responses and objections to large-scale development on behalf of its residents. The Council has argued that any development that does take place should bring maximum benefits to the community in regard to improved infrastructure and community benefits. The Council has helped guide the process of setting up a Supplementary Planning Document relating to the Village Centre and worked with the Chamber of Commerce and Community Partnership to produce a five year Community Plan. The Community Youth Worker funded by the Council has established a Youth Club at Jubilee Fields pavilion and this is becoming a popular venue for our young people with resources for indoor and outdoor activities. The Council is grateful to Nigel Wakefield who is chairing the Billingshurst Sports and Recreation Association to help maintain Jubilee Fields as a country park and sports facility for all to enjoy. It has been a busy term of office for this Council in challenging financial times. The Council would like to thank everyone involved in helping the Council over the term including past and present Councillors, past and present staff and the army of committed volunteers from all walks of life in the parish. Your Parish Council needs to hear from you regarding important local issues. All residents are encouraged to keep updated with matters that the Parish Council is involved in by reading the Village Tweet, visiting the Council web site or Twitter and Facebook pages and viewing local notice boards.
