ow many days in a year? Everyone knows it’s 365. But… in a leap year it is 366. 2016 is a leap year, so February is given an extra day. (Hard luck if you happen to be born on the 29th!). It takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to circle once around the Sun. If we didn’t add a day every four years (or when the year can be evenly divided by four), we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. Actually, and very rarely, the divided by four rule is broken if the year can be evenly divided by 100 (unless it is also evenly divisible by 400). So, for example, 2000 and 2400 are leap years but 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 will not be. So, now you know! Grahame Cover: Don’t forget to send a card to the one you love on 14th February! The area’s longest-established, independent family firm

It’s been revealed that by encouraging downsizing, up to 2.5 million extra homes could be released onto the property market, helping to plug the gap for much-needed family homes. The Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors have recently gone on the record arguing more needs to be done to encourage older buyers to vacate their large homes. Award-winning house builder Rydon Homes have been playing their part to provide such suitable housing to attract downsizers, by creating high quality homes which represent no compromise on the lifestyle that older purchasers have come to expect. Retirees, Brian and Cynthia Douglass recently bought a property at the Rydon Homes development of Woodland Place in Billingshurst in order to downsize from their existing home. Mr Douglass comments: “After looking around the show home at Rydon Homes other development in Hambrook, we saw that the quality was very good and that the homes were reasonably sized. However,

what particularly attracted us to Woodland Place was the location and the lifestyle that this offered.” “We liked the fact that the development was surrounded by mature trees and the area was quiet, yet just a short walk to the train station. Although it was sufficiently away from the town, it was still accessible for walks on the Downs, for shopping in Guildford and Crawley and close enough to Gatwick to make foreign travel simple.” Mr Douglass adds: “The service has been very good. We have found all the Rydon staff to be helpful and impressed by the level of detail that they offer. Everything has been well organised. We are now just looking forward to being able to move in.” Keith Hutchinson of Fowlers, who are marketing Woodland Place comments: “The approach taken by Rydon Homes in providing good quality homes, offers a true alternative for the would-be downsizer. By offering a compromise free move to a lowmaintenance home in a desirable location, they are helping to free up many much-needed larger homes.”

Your update to the Billingshurst housing market

Hello! I write these articles about a month in advance. February to me means a month of romance and pretty dismal weather. This February we of course have an extra day as it’s a leap year. Following, er, extensive Google research, I discovered that leap years were first introduced by Julius Caesar some 2070 years ago - the same man who left us our very own Stane Street as he launched a then unsuccessful marching army north from Bignor Roman villa. Before I start my own launch into a Pythonesque “and what have the Romans ever done for us?” I think I shall get back to writing about NOW, which for me is today, January 5th, with something that I hope will be relevant for you reading NOW, at the start of February.

I came to the Billingshurst branch of Cubitt and West in September last year with the sole aim of restoring our name in our town.

say we will is working. I hope very much that you continue to put your faith in me and my team, because it matters to us, and we’re grateful.

In the good old days of property I think to shy away from the fact that advertising we were reliant on boards. we haven’t had the best reputation Boards worked because we would over the last couple of years is daft, walk or drive past a property, having so I don’t. We haven’t and I wanted decided we liked what we saw from to change that. We’ve got the best the outside we would phone up or resources to back up our service, pop in to see the agent and our first we’ve got the best database and we’ve question would likely be “What’s it on got the best marketing materials but for?” and if we liked the sound of the we didn’t have the best name. Each price, having already decided we liked week I check the Rightmove Intel the look from the outside, we would reports - which agent book a viewing. The insides of a is listing and selling the The insides of home for sale still had a certain most, which is getting a home for sale mystique about them - details the most views etc. I’m still had a certain were about dimensions and excited today because mystique about whether or not a house had we’re clearly growing them... central heating (another thing in market share. the Romans did for us?!). Today Estate agency is a people business websites have removed some and a competitive one at that and in of that mystique - we already a village full of agents I’m delighted know what a home looks like that I haven’t had to run around inside too. The job therefore of wildly slashing fees or cutting corners a good agent is to capture the to get a listing. Simply showing up, best images - we’re still the only demonstrating (rather than just agent in town to use professional saying) that we really do have an photographers rather than just excellent service on offer and proving better cameras, we need to that you can trust us to do what we write details in a way that gives

a sense of what a home feels like (we write about lifestyle not where the radiator is) and, as ever, getting that price exactly right is even more key than before - everything is on show at once. I know this, you know this, and all I can say is we take no chances in missing any of those marks! If you’re thinking about a spring move, I hope you’ll spare me a few moments of your time to see how we can best help you. And, for those of you romancing your way into February don’t forget we also offer completely free mortgage advice with access to over 22000 mortgage products and all major high street lenders. We really can help you every step of the way, and we’d love to.

Fairtrade Fortnight

W

hat did you have for breakfast this morning? Maybe you enjoyed coffee from Kenya, bananas from Colombia, cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire, tea from India, sugar from Malawi or juice from Brazilian oranges. Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries work hard every day to grow the food we take for granted, but ironically they don’t always earn enough to feed their own families. In other words, they do not have food security. Fairtrade is about changing that. Its aim is to secure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. By being paid a fair price, they can have more control over their lives and less worry about how they will feed their families. Fairtrade means many farmers and workers are able to fulfil a basic human need – to put enough food on the table for the people they care about, all year round. When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, it means that the Fairtrade ingredients they contain have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. These standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and

better business equipment and practices. There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products available in the UK: from coffee, tea and chocolate to beauty products, flowers and gold. One in three bananas bought is Fairtrade, and British consumers choosing Fairtrade sugar sent more than £5 million in Fairtrade premium back to sugar cane smallholders last year. Choosing to buy food with the FAIRTRADE Mark really does make a huge difference to thousands of farmers, workers and their families. From 29th February until 13th March 2016 is Fairtrade Fortnight, during which ordinary people like you and me are encouraged to inspire a multitude of Fairtrade breakfasts in our communities – and wake others up to the challenges facing farmers and workers. There are three simple steps to get involved: l Organise your own Big Fairtrade Breakfast l Inspire others to host a breakfast (for example, in a school, workplace, town hall or individuals at home) l Register your breakfast on the Big Fairtrade Breakfast totaliser to make sure it gets counted. Find everything you need at fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast. No one person can do everything to tackle the injustices that exist in the world, but harnessing the power of a Fairtrade breakfast is something we can all do. So, sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Pedal Power

Road cycling is an exhilarating way to challenge yourself

Y

ou know what they say about riding a bike – once you’ve learned you never forget. So if you enjoyed zooming down hills when you were younger (and struggling up them!) road cycling may be the ideal sport for you. As the name suggests, road cycling involves riding exclusively on roads, and the aim is to build up your speed and the distance you can cover. It’s a very efficient way to get fit and lose weight as it’s one of the few sports that you can sustain for two to four hours. Like running, it gets you out in the fresh air, but it is low impact and places less strain on your joints. Road bikes are designed for racing. They have a lightweight frame, narrow tyres and rounded handlebars so that you sit forward in an aerodynamic position. You can pay anything from £150 to £5,000 plus. Cheaper bikes are made from steel or aluminium, while the more expensive are carbon fibre or titanium, which are amazingly strong and light. If you decide to take up the sport seriously, look for a well-known brand and expect to pay around £600. Getting the right size is important, so ask your local bike shop for advice. Your legs should be almost straight

when they are on the pedal at bottom of the turn. There are two types of pedals on road bikes. Platform pedals are like those on a traditional bicycle and you will need to add toe clips. Modern clipless pedals will need special shoes with cleats on them that fix your foot to the pedals. The saddle of a road bicycle is normally very narrow and can be uncomfortable, so you may want to get a gel cover or wear padded shorts. When you’re out on the roads, safety has to be your top priority. A helmet is a must, as is brightly coloured clothing. Ride your bike as if you were driving a car and obey traffic laws. Take a tool kit with you – a spare inner tube, tyre levers, puncture repair kit, pump and Allen keys are essential. It’s also sensible to carry your address and phone number in case of an accident. Think of road cycling as a long-term sport. It will take you a few weeks to get used to your bike and build up your speed and stamina. Joining a club is a great way to keep motivated. You’ll find a directory of over 1,500 clubs at www.britishcycling.org.uk ranging from informal groups who ride for pleasure to competitive racing teams. So what are you waiting for – get on your bike! Alex Brown

Sink or Swim Learning to swim as an adult

H

ow did it happen? You’ve reached and exceeded the age at which you are legally regarded as an adult. You can drink, vote, drive, get married, pay taxes and get called to war. You have a job, own a home and lead a fulfilling life in lots of ways, but there is just one blot on the horizon – you still can’t swim! The inability to swim is a cause of embarrassment for many adults, and some are reluctant and even ashamed to admit to it. But though you may feel that there is a stigma attached, the first thing to understand is that you are not alone. There are many others just like you, and if you really want to, there is no reason in the world why you can’t master the art! People fail to learn to swim for a number of reasons. Some may have had a traumatic experience – almost drowning for example, after falling into deep water, or being the victim of a prank that got out of hand – while others simply may not have had the opportunity. Regardless of the cause, most non-swimming adults are afraid of water, and need to acknowledge the psychological as well as the physical barriers. Fear can keep us safe, but it can also prevent us from moving forward. Many non-swimmers are afraid of putting their face in the water and

are scared that they won’t be able to float, yet more or less everyone floats. What sometimes gets in the way is fear and tension that causes you to hold yourself stiffly, hunch your head and shoulders, and push your feet towards the bottom of the pool. Most non-swimmers are afraid to take their feet off the bottom and become panic-stricken if there is nothing to hold onto, but learning to trust that the water will hold you up rather than the reverse, is key to mastering the art of swimming. Though some people may opt to enlist the help of a friend or relative to teach them to swim, the best course is probably to turn to a professional with the correct training. But there are things you can do yourself to help boost confidence: Walk around in chest-deep water to get used to how it feels and maintain balance; repeatedly dip your face and body in and out of the water, holding on to the side for support; practise floating on your stomach with your face in the water; with the help of a float, lie on your back, gradually introducing kicking movements with your legs. However you decide to proceed, please remember there is no shame in not being able to swim! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT)

A

s we enter 2016, one of Billingshurst's voluntary groups celebrates its tenth anniversary. The Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT) is the area’s Community First Responder group. Community First Responders are trained, monitored and dispatched by the ambulance service and can provide treatment and reassurance to patients while awaiting an ambulance. Community First Responders are trained in a number of lifesaving skills and carry an array of equipment including defibrillators and oxygen. BEAT has also set up 16 Public Access Defibrillators in Billingshurst and the surrounding area, most recently at Billingshurst Primary School; there are also additional sites planned in 2016. It is the team’s aim that if someone is unfortunate enough to suffer a cardiac arrest in the area they will not be far away from a defibrillator, Community First Responder, or indeed both. BEAT operates as a registered charity and has been supported financially by local individuals and organisations. This year, BEAT was chosen as the first charity of the year to be supported by the new Sainsbury’s store in Billingshurst and BEAT’s Chairman Paul Berry, was honoured to have been asked to officially open the store. Paul, who has been a Community First Responder since the team went live in February 2006 comments, “I joined BEAT having previously been present at two medical emergencies where I wondered if I could have done more to assist. The training we receive and the equipment we carry means that we can really help achieve a positive outcome for patients.” Paul also reflects that “quite often, all that is required is to offer reassurance to patients and to assist the ambulance crews. However, in the case of a cardiac arrest the treatment that responders can provide can quite

literally be life-saving. Being a responder is very flexible and can easily be made to fit around work and family commitments.” One of BEAT’s newest recruits, Heidi Dodd, says, “I have been a First Responder for a year now, and I love it! I work part-time and am often home during the day. I usually book on during school hours, and am called out an average of a couple of times a week. Responding is very rewarding and certainly breaks up the boredom of a day of housework! Ongoing training opportunities have been excellent, I’ve learnt so much, gained new skills, and met new people in my community. I would recommend it to anyone with a few hours to spare, looking for a new challenge.” BEAT’s Team Leader Hannah Alsbury-Morris says, “As we enter our tenth year we hope to increase our numbers further. So far the team has attended over 1,500 calls but we would like to do more and provide a greater level of cover. We plan to increase the number of public access sites we have provided so far by setting up new sites, including one at Brinsbury College; we are also delighted that Billingshurst Parish Council has successfully obtained funding for sites at Adversane and Five Oaks. The team plan to run a number of public awareness sessions aimed at familiarising members of our community with defibrillators and explaining basic life support such as effective CPR.” If anyone would like to find out more about the public awareness sessions, would like to enquire about becoming a Community First Responder or would like to make a donation to the group, Hannah can be contacted on 07930 416835. More information about BEAT can also be found on its website, www.beatresponders.org.uk or the team can be followed on Twitter @BillingshurstCFR. Paul Berry

Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read February’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Ice Twins – SK Tremayne This month we have a hugely successful thriller which is slowly spreading across social media, largely thanks to its inclusion in the Richard and Judy Book Club. Tremayne successfully plays on the greatest fear of every parent: losing their child. This is exactly what happened to Angus and Sarah Moorcroft. They lived the perfect life in London with their twin daughters, Kirstie and Lydia, but a holiday to Sarah’s parents’ in Devon turned into tragedy when Lydia fell from a balcony and died. Or did she? Two girls, physically identical in every way but with very different personalities. Surely if anyone is able to tell them apart it would be their parents? Lydia, Sarah’s thoughtful and quiet daughter is dead and she must rebuild her life and keep going for the sake of Kirstie. A year after the accident, the family inherit a remote Scottish island and make arrangements to leave London where painful memories of Lydia are around every corner. Then Kirstie turns everything upside down with a simple question. “Why do you keep calling me Kirstie, Mummy? Kirstie is dead. It was Kirstie that died. I’m Lydia.” Could Angus and Sarah really have got it wrong? Or is Kirstie just grieving for her dead twin sister? Is there something special that unites identical twins, even beyond the grave, and causes confusion and guilt at being the one to survive? As the action moves to Scotland the fresh start that they hoped for comes crashing down around them. Just who did die on that day in Devon? And what exactly happened to cause a little girl to fall and lose her life? As the truth is slowly revealed, Sarah struggles to come to terms with the reality as she is slowly pulled into a pit of despair and anguish. The novel starts slowly but builds to a chilling climax that will haunt the reader long after the final paragraph has been digested.

The Sisters Grimm: The Fairy-tale Detectives – Michael Buckley There are certain characters and stories that we have all grown up with. We know that it isn’t a good idea to build a house out of straw or sticks. Apples given to us by strange old women might not be good for us. And planting some magic beans in your back garden is certainly not the smartest thing you could do unless you want to be attacked by giants! But they are just old stories, right? Well, what if they weren’t? In this first novel in the Sisters Grimm series (aimed at children around the age of 10), we meet Sabrina and Daphne Grimm. They live in New York and have in the past year been placed with one foster family after another following the mysterious disappearance of their parents. The girls have become experts at running away from each home as they find themselves treated badly. Suddenly, out of the blue, their grandmother appears and offers them a home: shocking as the girls had been told that she had died. The authorities don’t seem too concerned by this – they are simply happy to get rid of Sabrina and Daphne – and so they are delivered a small town called Ferryport Landings and to the welcoming arms of Granny Relda. But Ferryport Landings is no ordinary town, as the girls will soon discover. After all, how many schools have Snow White as a teacher? Here live the Everafters: characters from fairy-tales who are doomed to remain there for ever due to a curse. A curse that Sabrina and Daphne find themselves at the heart of. It soon becomes clear that Granny Relda is no ordinary Granny and the fact that she is still alive is just one secret that has been kept from the Sisters Grimm.

Billingshurst Lions Christmas collection raises ÂŁ3,500

T

he Lions Club wishes to thank all of those residents of the Billingshurst district who supported our annual Christmas collection. The Club went out on 15 separate occasions in all weathers with only one evening having to be postponed. Our policy of advertising the date we would be in specific places in Village Tweet proved successful with many families being ready for our arrival. It is heartening to see how many children still enjoy the excitement of this time of the year and look forward to seeing Santa, and receiving a small gift. We collected over ÂŁ3,500 which, as usual, will be used to support mainly local good causes. We have also been supporting the Air

Ambulance in recent times. If you have any suggestions as to any person, family or local organisation that could benefit from some support please contact the Club through our bookshop in Jengers Mead. Once again, thanks from Billingshurst Lions. Catfish Up and coming local band well worth catching

C

atfish are a Wisborough Green based blues band who have most definitely been making waves in the blues world during 2015. The band’s year began with the release of their debut album, So Many Roads, which went straight to Number 1 in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association blues airplay charts in January. Over the following few months, they supported well known blues artists like Larry Miller, Mud Morganfield, Babajack and Oli Brown and played at a number of major blues festivals including Bluesfest at the 02. The icing on the cake came when they were nominated recently for two British Blues Awards, one for Emerging Artist and one for keyboard player. “Catfish are a four-piece, and each of the four pieces contributes very much to the whole. Catfish… rock steady rhythm section of Dusty Bones, Kevin Yates, add to that one of the finalists in this year’s keyboard player category of the British Blues Awards Paul Long and you’ve already got the foundation of a great band… a scorching, heartfelt, emotion drenched set from uber guitar talent, Matthew Long. This young man is going to go a long way – the solo in Loan Me A Dime was just totally exquisite!” (Tony Corner – Radio DJ Blues Corner)

The band’s secret weapon is phenomenal 21year-old guitarist Matt Long, who studied at ACM in Guildford and the influence of his other band, heavy rock outfit SevenSmith, is obvious in some songs like the thundering riffs on Going Down and the wailing guitar on Born Under a Bad Sign where he brings the growling darkness out in the songs. Contrast that with the sensitivity of delivery on Make it Rain and the anguish of the vocal in So Many Roads and it is easy to see why this band has made such headway in the blues world in such a short space of time. Their new EP, a five-track tribute to the late, great BB King, was released on 12th January. The next 12 months are already filling up with festival and blues club bookings, and the band are planning a tour of the blues clubs in France in August. Album No. 2 is already well underway, including some excellent original material. Definitely one to watch. In fact you can watch them! They are playing 30 gigs this year, local ones to catch them at include 23rd March, Crawley Blues Club; 1st April, Holbrook Club, Horsham; 2nd April, The Brunswick, Hove; 22nd April and 28th August, The Ranelagh, Brighton; Website: www.catfishbluesband.co.uk Facebook: thecatfishbluesband Fiona Long Photo: www.blackhamimages.com

Go Native

W

e are incredibly lucky here the the UK to have a range of versatile native ponies bred right here on our doorstep. There is a breed to suit all jobs and the majority are easy to keep and suited to our inclement weather conditions. It would be impossible to write about the breed standards for all in this short article but I am aiming to give Village Tweet readers a taste of what our wonderful natives have to offer so you can do some research for yourself and hopefully one day decide to buy one of our fabulous native breeds for yourself! The Shetland pony is probably one of the most iconic UK breeds. Bred to survive the harshest weather that can be thrown at them, these cheeky ponies are full of character and not for the faint hearted! They are up there with Houdini as escape artists and see all fencing as a challenge! Shetlands are very strong for their size and it is not unusual to see them ridden by petite adults, they are also popular as driving ponies. Standard size Shetlands are the more traditional type but miniatures are becoming very popular. The Exmoor is our oldest and purist breed of native, very hardy and sure footed these ponies still live out on Exmoor in herds. They make good riding ponies and again are very strong for their size. Pure bred Exmoor ponies can be identified by a brand depicting who the pony belongs too. Exmoor ponies are frequently used for environmental management of sensitive grassland areas. They are also classified as endangered by the Rare Breed Survival Trust with only 390 breeding mares left in the UK. The Dartmoor – not to be confused with the Dartmoor Hill pony – has been documented as living on Dartmoor since the Middle Ages; they are also classified as a rare breed. The Dartmoor pony has a superb temperament and they make the most wonderful children’s ponies. Pure bred Dartmoor ponies ooze quality and presence and are popular as lead rein ponies in the show ring. New Forest pony. Another fantastic versatile native breed, many of the larger ones make suitable mounts for adults. New Forest ponies have excelled in all disciplines of equine sport. They have great temperaments and are very trainable. Much has been done in recent years to improve the quality of the breed and promote them. The pony sales at Beaulieu Road are a sight to behold and many a wonderful riding pony

has been acquired there after spending their first few months roaming on the forest, a great result of this is they tend to be used to traffic and very friendly from the start! The Connemara. The ultimate sports pony originating from Ireland. Many of these ponies have excelled in working hunter classes, show jumping and dressage. They are ponies of superb quality and are bold and brave as well as intelligent and sure footed. They are also popular for crossing with thoroughbreds to produce small horses suitable for sport and hunting. Welsh ponies and cobs. Famed for their flashy movement there is nothing quite like watching a Welsh cob stallion strut his stuff! The Welsh breeds are set into four sections: Section A is the Welsh mountain pony. Hardy, tough and very intelligent they are very popular in the show ring as lead rein ponies and for scurry driving. Section B is a riding pony type. Very pretty and with good temperaments, they make fantastic children’s ponies and seem to excel in mounted games. The section C Welsh pony of cob type are small but powerful animals again very popular in harness and as competition ponies. Section D or Welsh Cob are again intelligent, versatile and wonderful movers but not suitable for those of a nervous disposition due to their often quirky ways, but they are very loyal and will try their heart out for their rider. Dales pony. Originally used as working pony in the lead mines of its native Yorkshire these ponies are immensely strong, they have calm placid temperaments and are suited to a wide range of jobs. Fell pony. Very similar to the Dales ponies, the Fell originates from Cumbria and Northumberland. They are slightly smaller than the Dales and have more pony like characteristics. In days gone by they would be a true multi-purpose working animal. The Highland pony is a very stoic breed. Solid and stocky they are capable of carrying a stag off the mountain, and with their weight carrying abilities make the perfect mount for an adult. They are very hardy and surefooted and rarely need rugs or shoes. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Pre-Marketing Consultancy Teamwork: Layla Sussex gives a few tips on how YOU can help US sell your property! Between us, Beverley and I have over a decade of estate agency experience, but on top of that we have bought and sold a few properties ourselves too. We pride ourselves on being approachable, professional, and effective members of Stewart’s team. Beyond that we have developed a skill that means we can see the property through any fixtures and fittings. Over our time here we have gleaned a few ideas and tips on how a property can be best presented for viewings. It can be difficult and time consuming to maintain the ‘viewing’ standard of tidiness, especially when it is in fact your home and you have to continue with your lives whilst on the market. If you are anything like me, stuff breeds stuff. I clear a surface at home and more appears there almost overnight. It is an endless battle, but then you might be lucky to be like Beverley

who is someone whose house is always viewing ready! I must have one of the untidiest families in Billingshurst, so I appreciate how hard it can be to get

your loved ones to put things where they should and not where they fall. It is better, for any viewer to not slip on a sock, have to step over a pair of shoes, a kit bag or the worst thing; tread on a Lego brick. The same rule applies to laundry, where possible put airers away and try not to have drying laundry hanging about. It can be helpful to pack up some things before going

on the market, but it is important that your house maintains the feeling of a home too. It may be worth looking at the position of the furniture, making sure that doors don’t bang on anything and can open fully. Ensure that it’s easy to manoeuvre. A room can feel smaller if you have to side step furniture to get in or around it. Although people don’t live in the garden and look at the house, it is important to have ‘kerb appeal’ and is hugely beneficial for the garden to be tidy and for the access to be well maintained and clear, it’s good to make the wheelie bins discreet too. Now, pets; I have four at home, two cats and two dogs, Bev has a dog. Not everyone likes animals so it is good wherever possible to put away any feeding bowls for viewings, make sure pet bedding is clean and if possible put away. It is less stressful for your dogs and the non-animal loving

01403 780300 viewer if they aren’t at home when viewings take place. It can also help to have plug-in air fresheners around to mask any lingering animal aroma. When people view a house they like to be able to visualise themselves there, by creating space and de-personalising a little it can really help make your house appeal to its potential new owner. So a ‘spring

clean’ will help too. ‘Charlotte in her web’ in the stairwell will be the first thing someone viewing the house will notice. Check light bulbs are all working, although it’s advised to use the low energy ones these days they can take half an hour to light the room, so maybe consider for the marketing period using brighter bulbs that give light when you flick the switch.

Ultimately, it’s our job to sell your house for you, but it can help speed the process up considerably if potential purchasers feel it is clean, well looked after and has enough living space space for them and their belongings. I would be pleased to visit and have a chat over a cuppa to give you some specific tips if you have one eye on a move in the future.

A busy start to 2016 at Billingshurst Fire Station!

C

hristmas now a distance memory, it was time for us to get going again in January. Although we didn’t stop over Christmas (we never stop!), with three calls on Christmas Day and two on Boxing Day. January started the way we left 2015: busy! First call of the year was on New Years day and it didn’t stop there. A call or two each day for a week. Nothing serious you will be glad to hear, but it proves how important it is to have a local fire station protecting the community and always ready for action day or night! I briefly talked about road conditions in last month’s issue and I’m sure with temperatures dropping, this month could bring many frosty mornings. Please take extra care on the roads, allowing that extra time for your journeys so you are not rushing. Be sure to allow time for de-icing

28

the windows before you set off; failure to do allow time for this vital task will mean you start your journey in a hurry, already late before you seven set off. Believe me, being in the wrong frame of mind, together with icy roads, is an accident waiting to happen. And who has to pick up the pieces? We have at last set up a Twitter page! This gives live reports from the different incidents we attend and also information on forthcoming events. We would love to boost our page to get as many followers as possible. We know that not everyone is interested in ‘social media’, but if you are and want to ‘follow us’ our name is @station49fire. Next month we are holding our Charity Car Wash, I will confirm the date in the March issue. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Allow time to de-ice your windows before driving

Holiday Planning in 2016… with a difference

I

’ve always been fascinated by the Moon. The Earth’s moon that is. I was born into the middle of the space race of the 1960’s. A time well before the computing power of the 21st century that today is capable of landing an unmanned craft on a tiny comet, only 2.5 miles across and travelling past our home planet at 84,000 miles per hour. A time when man, if he wanted to explore the Moon, had to go there in person and land the thing himself. Only the coolest, bravest and most skilful test pilots were given the opportunity to stand there and look back at the rest of us in awe. Many of those dozen men are still with us today, albeit well into their 70s and 80s. To a man they consider themselves lucky. “Someone had to go, and they just happened to pick me,” said Alan Bean, the fourth man to step onto the Moon, back in November 1969. There is a beautiful symmetry about the Moon as seen from the Earth. Although it is 400 times smaller than the Sun it is 400 times nearer so that the two appear exactly the same size in our sky. From time to time their paths cross and we are witness to the magical experience that is the total solar eclipse.

Where the full disc of our star is fully obscured by that of our satellite. Where for two or three minutes day becomes night amid an eerie silence, stillness and coolness. And a fleeting sense of ‘one-ness’ with the universe as the lucky few put their daily lives on hold. And look up. This year the home planet will see two such events. So if you fancy a holiday with a little something extra then now is the time to put the computing power of today to good use to get yourself a good deal… The first total solar eclipse is predicted for 9th March and the destination of choice will be Indonesia, specifically the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and Halmahera. The final occurrence is predicted for 1st September across southern Africa, specifically Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar. If the destinations don’t appeal there are always other options, as many of the major cruise lines have scheduled special journeys to coincide with these events. Alternatively stay in the village and mark 23rd September 2090 in your diary. Paul Wickens

Loxwood Lunch Club

ust under 50 local Loxwood and Ifold residents enjoyed a fantastic Christmas Lunch at North Hall on 14th December. The lunch started with the Loxwood Primary School Choir providing the entertainment with some exceptionally good carol singing on the stage. Our thanks go to Tim McMath and his team for their presence, which was much appreciated by our members. On arrival all guests were treated to wine and nibbles, the wine was kindly provided by Billingshurst Lions, many thanks to them. Following the carol singing everybody enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch consisting of turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes and vegetables, followed by Christmas pudding, coffee, tea, mince pies and chocolates. Our thanks go to John Murray Butchers who supplies his top quality meat for all of our meetings throughout the year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our helpers who set up the

tables and chairs, help in the kitchen, wait on tables and the most enjoyable part, washing up! We would also like to thank the Smallpeice Trust and West Sussex County Council who support us to make this community facility available to all. For those who are not aware of our existence and would like to join us on a regular basis for a home cooked, twocourse lunch, using local ingredients whenever possible for the unbelievable cost of £2, please contact Gina Moore on (01403) 751722 or email ginamoore@btopenworld.com. We welcome everybody along, irrespective of age, just come along for a good quality meal and meet new friends or maybe to renew old friendships. Our lunch dates are normally the 4th Monday of the month starting at 12.30 at North Hall. However, we do have to make the occasional change of date depending on Bank Holidays. Details can be found in the Loxwood Parish Magazine. Graham Moore Photo: Ian Lancaster

Garden View

What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day

W

ant a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and airmiles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee

they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentallyfriendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. Rachel Leverton

The greatest story John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

would like tell you folks of a wonderful event that I witnessed over the Christmas period. For a start though, I must advise that I have altered some of the details so that no embarrassment can be offered to the children or their parents. I have reached the stage in life where I can now indulge myself in the joys of childhood through the eyes of my grandchildren; this also gives me the excuse to act in similar ways as well! Anyway… the thing I’m talking about is the glorious Nativity shows put on by our local pre-schools. If you have attended one of these yourself you will undoubtedly be of similar mind to me when I say that they are the most moving, and at the same time, most enjoyable events you can ever have the good fortune to see. We assemble in the village halls as a mixed bunch of mothers, fathers, grandmas and grandads all eager to see how well our treasured little family members would stand up to the sea of strange faces that confront them, and if they would remember the lines that they have spent so many hours learning over the preceding weeks. The story I write here is an accumulation of many such events from over the years that I have witnessed, as my children, and then their children, have taken part in these little plays. What I hope they bring to you is the warmth and delight that they generate to all who attend and how they are the perfect start to the Christmas festivities. Thus this is a mish-mash of many such times rolled into one glorious show. We are lucky enough in our village to have had a real live donkey to start the shows. It should, however, be noted that it is quickly led down between the rows of guests, taken for just a single circuit of the stage area , and then led speedily out of the hall. I suspect that this may be a two-part move, firstly to avoid any injury to persons present, and secondly just in case the noise emanating from all quarters of the hall should spook the lovely beast to make a deposit before leaving! Now, to the accompaniment of the sounds of adoring adults, the children file in. First come the angels. A whole flock of them, each one dressed in white flowing lace and crowned with halos of glittering tinsel or feathery fur. They are seated on a row of little chairs and their eager faces scan the audience to find their adoring parents. From the murmur of sighs emanating round the hall it’s evident that they all fulfil the roles they have been allocated. Next to enter are the various animals. These can vary from the obligatory sheep, to cows, goats and even, at times, dogs and cats. Shepherds and soldiers follow and close on their heels are the three wise men, then the Inn keeper and his wife. Finally come Joseph and Mary. It should be noted here the tremendous efforts that families have put into the making of these children's costumes. There are the tea towel headdresses for the shepherds and an assortment of garments whose

36

origins are known only to the parents, but the imagination and skills in their creation is superb. Then the story that we all know so well is enacted to our delight and enjoyment. But… it is what happens around the scenes that proves so much joy to us all. Children this young are by nature quickly distracted, and with this sea of adults looming over them, there are distractions aplenty. Number four angel starts it off when she decides she’s had enough; she’s lightly restrained from doing a bunk by the protecting teacher, so she elects to slide off her chair, sits sulkily on the floor and hides her face with her pulled-up dress. The other angels seem unaware of her dilemma and remain looking as pure and innocent as their roles demand. Number two soldier meanwhile has picked a squabble with number three and is poking him warmly with his plastic sword. Number three retaliates and it takes the disarmament of the pair to restore harmony on that side of the stage. They both stand sulking for several minutes until they realise they are both in kicking distance from each other. By now the audience are warming to the actions of the cast and ripples of giggles echo through the seated throng. Mary moves forward to the crib while Joseph needs encouraging gestures from the sidelines before he somewhat reluctantly takes his place at her side. They take their seats and Mary hauls the baby Jesus out of the crib and holds him close to her chest by his ears. More giggles. Over the next ten minutes or so it would, in real life, be prudent to call the NSPCC as the poor baby JC is subjected to a whole variety of positions and his limbs subjected to stresses that would have put him in traction for some considerable time. Number one and number three kings approach the crib. The second king has escaped behind the backdrop curtain and is brought reluctantly to the scene leaving his gift of myrrh behind; the other kings give him dirty looks as they have to repeat their lines so that he can find his place in the dialogue. Many of the extras on the stage have not a great deal to say or actually do. They all play their parts with great enthusiasm and do their best to look interested throughout the proceedings, but we all understand when a touch of boredom allows their attention to wander. Thumbs raised to parents, costumes pushed and pulled into more comfortable positions, chats with near neighbours, and the odd nose contentedly searched while the owner’s mind wanders off to who knows where. There is even the little lad in the back row of the sheep who has found that he should never have had that last glass of squash and now displays his dilemma by crossing his legs, squirming with ever more vigour, and finally being led off-stage by the prompter. So it reaches the finish and the hall erupts. Genuine applause is given by parents whose hearts are full of pride and joy at the efforts that they have witnessed this day. Nothing can ever beat a children’s Nativity play. We remember it for the rest of our lives, and every year we relive those memories when we have the privilege to once more sit before those innocent faces. John Nash

ast month Microsoft officially ended support for all but the latest version of Internet Explorer. It’s not a shock as they have been talking about this for the last 18 months, but it leaves millions of Windows users in dangerous territory. But it’s not all cut and dried. If you are using Internet Explorer 9 on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, for example, this is still actively supported, and covers tens of millions of users worldwide. And Internet Explorer 10 is still supported on Windows Server 2012. But none of those operating systems are capable of upgrading to newer IE versions. Also if you have IE10 on Windows 8, your support for both the operating system and IE has also ended. However, if you are running Windows 8 you can upgrade to Windows 8.1, which includes the supported Internet Explorer 11, for free. You can, of course, continue browsing with your older version of Internet Explorer, but as each month passes, the likelihood that you’ll be attacked increases as new vulnerabilities are discovered and go unpatched. However, there are options. The first thing to do, if you are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1, is run the Windows Update and you’ll get IE11, which is supported. There’s a catch. Some websites and online services are designed to work only with

specific versions of Microsoft’s web browser, which is why many people resist upgrading. The simplest solution to this is to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, and then use a virtual PC application like Virtual Box to install Windows XP (and Internet Explorer) as just another application. You can even use it to run Windows on a Mac. Unfortunately, Windows XP is not supported by Internet Explorer 11. Users of the OS are already at serious risk of attacks. If you are adamant you want to stay with Windows XP, despite the risks, you still have a few safer browser options… Opera, the latest version of Firefox and Google Chrome all support Windows XP, although from April 2016 there will also be no more updates to the XP version for Chrome. Your last option is to upgrade to Windows 10, if you haven’t already, and get both IE11 and the new browser from Microsoft called Edge. Edge will eventually replace Internet Explorer all together but we’re a long way from that at the moment. Just bear it in mind. The Microsoft message is clear: If you’re still using an unsupported version of Windows and/or an old version of Internet Explorer, you’ll soon be on your own — and at the mercy of the many criminals that look for easy targets online. Billingshurst Primary School celebrates Ofsted result

B

illingshurst Primary School has been judged to be a Good school following its latest Ofsted inspection, recognising the commitment and determination of everyone within the school to achieve something few schools ever manage. Helen Williamson, Headteacher, delighted staff and pupils by announcing the result in January. The rating represents a significant achievement as the school moves from Inadequate to Good in only 20 months. Following the visit by Ofsted Inspectors at the end of December 2015, the school was found to have an overall effectiveness of Good with a further rating of Good for five key categories; from Effectiveness of Leadership to Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment. The results are cause for celebration, highlighting the dedication to an ambitious two-year improvement plan, which has seen staff and pupils willing to take on the challenge and work hard to progress. Feedback from Inspectors suggested the school is a secure Good, with only a few steps remaining before Outstanding, which will continue to be the ultimate goal. In particular, the report highlighted the strength of leadership, the enthusiasm to continue improving performance and the rapid progress made by pupils in all years. The Inspectors noted that pupils are happy and confident and strive to live up to the school’s values;

good behaviour reflected the “friendly but purposeful atmosphere in the school”. Helen Williamson commented, “This report is a significant step in realising the vision we hold for our school. When Ofsted judged the school to be Inadequate in 2013 I made the commitment to our school community that we would achieve a judgement of Good and that anything less would not be acceptable. I am delighted that the incredible hard work and dedication of staff and pupils has been acknowledged by Ofsted, which will drive us on to further improvement. Over the last 20 months we have been committed to ensuring the measures that were needed to improve the school were implemented in a sustainable and long-term plan. At times it has proved challenging, but the children remain at the heart of our vision and decision-making. We continue to be extremely proud of them. It must also be said that this extraordinary achievement would not be possible without the dedication and sheer hard work of each and every member of staff at the school; the whole team at BPS has shared my commitment to making this school great and I am so proud of this incredible team. Next inspection: Outstanding!” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA Photo: Alan Wright Photography

Puppy Love How to choose a perfect puppy

L

et’s face it, puppies are little bundles of gorgeousness and when choosing one it’s easy to get carried away, but don’t. It is important to think very carefully about whether that puppy (or indeed any puppy) is a good choice. But let’s assume for now that you’ve decided you really do have room in your life for a dog… The first step is to research which breed or type of mongrel suits your circumstances, and also the dog’s size and nature. Have you got room for a puppy that will grow into a large dog? How much time do you have to exercise a dog? Do you have children, or any other pets that it must be compatible with? In addition to the purchase cost, what ongoing costs must you consider e.g. food and vet bills; a large dog will eat much more than a small one, and some breeds are prone to medical problems which may be expensive to treat. Consider the dog’s coat if shedding hair might be an issue. Would a dog or a bitch be a better choice? Male dogs can be more dominant and headstrong; with females, you will need to consider how you will cope when she comes into season. Terriers are lively dogs that need lots of exercise for their size and can be tricky to train, but they are generally good with children. Toy dogs seem particularly prone to becoming snappy if they are anxious, which they may be around boisterous children. Hounds need lots of exercise, and breeds that have a working history need plenty of mental stimulation so that they don’t get in to

mischief. Border Collies for instance, can become stressed if they are not active and given lots of attention. Gun dogs are easy to train and settle well into most houses. If you choose a pedigree dog, you will know exactly how large your pup will grow and what it will look like. You should buy from an experienced breeder who can give you lots of information and allow you to meet the parents. As I mentioned earlier, some breeds have potential ‘inherited diseases’ or known health issues in later life, so ask about this if you want to avoid hefty vet bills. Crossbreeds can be cheaper to buy – they can even be free – but if you can’t see both parents you may get a surprise when it grows much larger than you expected. There are currently some very fashionable crossbreeds such as the Labradoodle (a Labrador/poodle cross) or a Cockerpoo (a cocker spaniel/poodle cross). These can combine the best features of each breed. Resist buying a puppy that is left on its own and appears withdrawn, as it may have, or may develop, personality issues. You should choose a lively, alert puppy in good health. To give your puppy a good start in its new home, try not to have too many people around when it arrives. Be relaxed and allow your puppy to sniff around. Offer it food and water although you may find it refuses for a while. Try to establish a routine. Once settled in, you can look forward to your puppy being a loving companion for many years. Susan Brookes-Morris

Crime / Motoring

Break-in at Fishers Farm Park… Thieves broke into Fishers Farm Park, Wisborough Green, on the evening of 14th January 2016 and stole a massive stock of farm vehicles and machinery valued at around £40,000. One of the items was a brand new John Deere Gator, which had only been delivered the day before. The thieves gained access to the equipment by cutting through padlocks and removing a section of the barn in order to steal the vehicles. Police officers attended the scene promptly and conducted a house-tohouse enquiry. Tim Rollings, owner of Fishers Farm Park said, “The fist I knew of it was when a thoughtful neighbour phoned at 4am to report horses and donkeys in their garden. The thieves didn’t even have the courtesy to shut the field gate when they left which alone speaks volumes about the sort of people who commit these crimes causing disruption and misery.” Can you help the police apprehend these criminals? Did you see anything suspicious around the time of the theft? Have you been offered any farm vehicles or machinery at a suspiciously cheap price? Call the police on 101 and quote Crime Reference No 211. Your call will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Billingshurst Watercourses Do you know your rights and responsibilities as a riparian land owner for watercourses, ditches, streams, rivers or culverts alongside or within your property boundary? Keeping your watercourse well maintained benefits the community as a whole. Watercourses such as ditches and culverts are designed to drain surface water away, before the water levels increase to an extent that puts property, roads, land and infrastructure at risk of flooding. The cost of maintaining a watercourse is minor compared to the costs that can arise from flood damage, not to mention the distress and inconvenience caused if your property is flooded. If a watercourse is carefully maintained, it can create an excellent habitat for wildlife. In Billingshurst, some members of our community have sadly experienced the misery of flooding and have joined forces to form the Billingshurst Flood Action Group, led by our community Flood Champion Cllr. Lesley Wilding. The Parish Council obtained £7,335 funding from the West Sussex County Council Operation Watershed grant for the clearance of ditches. This funding was used to clear the ditches running along Little East Street to alleviate the flooding of the public footpath number 1941 and the ditch next to the footpath in Daux Road.

Billingshurst Parish Council has recently followed the good practice guide and cleared the Parbrook watercourse running through its land at Lower Station Road Recreation Ground. Remember, stay safe when working next to or within a watercourse, consider the risks posed by: •  Deep silt •  Slippery banks •  Deep or fast flowing water •  Near roads •  Working with plant or machinery •  Enclosed spaces •  Working near trees or cutting down trees •  Injurious invasive species There are pockets of giant hogweed along watercourses in Billingshurst. If you have invasive plants or injurious weeds on your premises you have a responsibility to prevent them spreading into the wild or causing a nuisance. More information on the identification of invasive species and their management can be found on the GB non-native species secretariat website: www.nonnativespecies.org For more information on your rights and responsibilities, you can view the Environment Agency publication Living on the Edge at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ riverside-ownership-rights-and-responsibilities

Parish Councillor Vacancies

The basic principles of keeping your watercourse running clear are very simple: •  Keep growth of vegetation such as trees, weeds, reeds and grass under control. •  Keep watercourses free of debris, e.g. litter, grass cuttings, fallen branches and trees •  Remove excess silt

Billingshurst Parish Council is active and vibrant and cares passionately about delivering services for the local community. •  Could you contribute your business or personal skills and expertise? •  Do you want to represent the views of local people? •  If you would like to make a difference and help shape the future of Billingshurst, then why not consider joining the Council? Our Community Volunteers – meet Colin Banks

I

n the late ’seventies, Billingshurst’s branch of the Royal British Legion was struggling, with a very small, largely inactive membership and looked set to fold. It was at this point that Colin Banks, who had just left the Air Force, had a chance meeting at Victoria station with a former RAF comrade, who asked whether he was going to join a service charity and suggested that he joined the Legion. Colin progressed through the ranks holding the position of Standard Bearer, Acting Treasurer and Branch Chairman, a role he now combines with that of Honorary President and member of the Executive Committee of Sussex County. His predecessor as President was Major Jack Leaman to whom he made a vow not to let the branch fold. With a strong local team and improved national communications and publicity he believes that the once-beleaguered branch has turned a corner. Colin’s role is multi-faceted: apart from the ceremonial aspect of attending Remembrance Day and funerals, he finds himself talking to schoolchildren about the Legion in the run up to Remembrance Day, maintaining war graves and memorials, supporting local members and

volunteers, fundraising and liaising at county and national level. He is passionate about the work of the Legion which supports the families of servicemen as well as helping physically or mentally injured soldiers or those who find themselves homeless, unemployed or in other difficult straits. The Legion has drop-in centres all over the country – including one in Brighton – which offer a warm welcome and advice to those who need it. “But there is so much more we can do,” says Colin. Membership of the Legion is open to anyone, regardless of whether they have served in the Forces or not. Colin also points out that although a number of members are past retirement age, there are also young people involved and gives the example of his Vice Chairman, Robert Nicholl, a young man in his twenties. When asked to sum up the Royal British Legion and its ethos, his answer is immediate. “Service before self,” he says promptly. “It’s an organisation which always makes the effort.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
