Red Lentil & Caramalised Onion Soup METHOD
1. Heat a medium saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon olive oil. When it dances, add shallots, garlic, carrots, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook until shallots soften, about 3-5 mins. 2. Add beetroot and vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Add lentils and reduce heat to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper and simmer for 15-25 mins until lentils and vegetables are tender. 3. Prepare the caramelised onions while soup cooks. If using cardamom pods, crush them and remove seeds. Grind seeds into a powder with a mortar and pestle. 4. Heat a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When it dances, add onion, cardamom and coriander. Keep heat high so onions begin to brown, stirring continuously. If onions start sticking to the pan, add a little water. Continue cooking for 10 mins, or until onions are caramelised and golden brown. Reduce heat if necessary to keep from burning. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. 5. Fill bowls with soup and top with tablespoon of onions and serve.

Time to Smile Look after your teeth in 2016
L
ess than half the population attend a dentist for regular check ups and the situation is becoming steadily worse. We tend to take our teeth for granted until we have a toothache, but in the case of teeth, prevention really is better than cure. Our mouths are full of bacteria. Mostly these are harmless; some are even helpful. Certain types though, attach themselves to the enamel (the hard surface which covers each tooth). If not removed they breed and spread. Their waste products mix with the proteins in saliva and form the creamy film we know as plaque. If we eat a lot of sugary food it creates the right oral environment for bacteria to multiply faster. While tooth enamel is very hard wearing it is vulnerable to attack by acid. One of the waste products produced by the breeding bacteria is acid and because this is formed in the sticky plaque, it cannot easily be washed away by saliva. If they’re not removed, the acids begin to dissolve the enamel and make it porous. The pores become larger and in time they join up and a cavity is formed. Because there are no nerve fibres in the enamel, we cannot ‘feel’ the bacterial acid attacking our teeth. Eventually though, the enamel breaks down so much that the acid begins to attack to dentine underneath. When this happens we feel pain so know that something is wrong, but by then we already have tooth decay. So how do we prevent bacterial build up on our teeth? The first step is to develop a good brushing technique.
Most dentists recommend electric toothbrushes as they have a more efficient cleaning action. Whether you choose an electric or an ordinary brush, make sure that the bristles are soft. Too much vigorous brushing with tough bristles can irritate the gums and wear the thin tooth enamel, making the teeth sensitive. The second step to good oral hygiene is flossing. The tiny gaps between the teeth, called interproximal spaces, cannot be kept clean by brushing alone. Flossing is the only way to get into these areas. Failure to floss means that up to 35% of the tooth surface remains dirty! The third step is mouthwash. This flushes out any persistent bacteria which brushing and flossing have missed, and also work to make the teeth more slippery meaning bacteria find it harder to stick to their surface. Even the best oral hygiene falls short of perfection, which is why it is important to visit a dentist for a check up at least once a year. They will be able to check the whole mouth for signs of damage and provide preventative treatment if they see a problem. Good oral health needn’t be pricey. Most dentists offer treatment plans, where you pay a little every month to cover some or all of any future costs. Many also offer interest-free loans, so you can spread the cost of more expensive treatment. So get cleaning and flash those pearly whites with pride this year. Louise Addison

New Year / About the house
Sticking to New Year’s Resolutions
D
id you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to 1st January. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan – a goal isn’t enough. You need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more?
How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike? Break your goal into smaller ones. So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday? How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it. Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable. There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or simply cycle for local trips. Keep track of your progress. Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way. Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon. We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again. Good luck! Kate Duggan

Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read January’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Girl on the Train – Paula Hawkins Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become the book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination? As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.
Midnight for Charlie Bone – Jenny Nimmo It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eightbook series. Charlie is a fairly normal 10-year-old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life changes. He learns that his three unmarried great-aunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this; he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent. And besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs. Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed.

Eurofighter Typhoon – Above the Rest Village Tweet met local author on the release of a superb pictorial history
T
here can be very few aviation enthusiasts who have not dreamed of accompanying an RAF fast jet pilot while taking photographs of a similar jet flying in close formation alongside. Aviation photographer Geoffrey Lee, who lives in Plaistow, is one of the lucky few for whom this dream has become reality! Geoffrey’s fourth book, Eurofighter Typhoon – Above the Rest, second edition has just been published. The hardback large format 224-page book is a tribute to the Eurofighter Typhoon and the teams who have contributed to the design and development of this magnificent aircraft. The photographs and accompanying text take the reader behind the scenes both in the air and on the ground with operational Typhoon squadrons of the six nations that fly this state-of-the art aircraft. It’s one thing to ride in a fighter jet as it is flown through high-G manoeuvres, often at low level but to do so while simultaneously composing the perfect shot, with constantly changing angles and lighting, and remaining calm enough to press the shutter button at precisely the right micro-second takes a very special photographer. How did Geoffrey become such a man? “There are fewer than twenty photographers in the world capturing fast military jets air-to-air. I had the opportunity to join the aerospace industry with Hawker Siddeley as an apprentice photographer. These days such opportunities are very rare,” said Geoffrey. “How well I remember my first ever air-to-air sortie. I photographed a Hawk (as used by the Red Arrows) on a training flight. I recall the rush of adrenaline as we climbed away from RAF Chivenor over the Devonshire countryside towards the coast. Later, once the film was processed, pats on the back made me realise that I
had an aptitude for air-to-air photography.” Before long Geoffrey was the official photographer for the Eurofighter Typhoon, photographing the development aircraft on its maiden flight in April 1994. A sub-contractor to BAE Systems, he had built up his reputation over three decades flying in a variety of aircraft types. The cockpit of a jet fighter is a very tight space which limits the amount of equipment Geoffrey can use. “For most shoots I take a Nikon D4 FX DSLR fitted with a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lens, two 16GB and two 8GB storage cards, a spare battery, lens cloth and a NATO air sickness bag just in case!” To obtain the most dynamic shots Geoffrey likes to have the aircraft banking hard. This of course means much pre-flight planning – flying time can be very costly, and it pays to get it right first time. Good weather is vital of course but scenery and background are very important too as they can make or break a photograph; Geoffrey usually tries to photograph the aircraft in the environment it normally operates in, which might be over lakes, forests, deserts and mountains. Lighting is critical. “I never shoot with the sun right behind me as it can give flat lighting; however, if the sun is about 30-45 degrees off, interesting shadows lift the subject aircraft from the background.” This book is not commercially available. It can be purchased for £25 plus postage via Geoffrey’s website www.planefocus.com. Village Tweet readers are welcome to pick up a copy direct from Geoffrey and save on postage. Email him on ghlee@planefocus.com. Grahame Pearson, Editor, Village Tweet Photo: Geoffrey Lee prepares for another sortie

Billingshurst Community Partnership celebrates 10 years of Incorporation
B
illingshurst has good reason to celebrate. It has been benefiting for over 10 years from the work of the award-winning Community Partnerships, which holds the coveted Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Partnership was formally incorporated in November 2005. Since its formation in 2002, the Partnership has raised over £800,000 to help toward funding such initiatives as Burnt Row Woodland and Jubilee Fields Fishing Lake, the Sports Complex and the Family and Child Care Centre in Station Road. It is currently working on an exciting new Youth Facility for the young people of Billingshurst. Its ongoing projects include a Luncheon Club for the Elderly and a Youth Enterprise scheme finding work experience places for our young people, Arts and Craft initiatives and working with the Police regarding many community safety issues. Explaining the role of the Partnership, its Chair, Denise Campbell (central in photo, with floral skirt), said, “It is a privilege to work with the Community Partnership because we benefit from having strength in numbers and because we have access to funds that are not available to other groups, including Parish Councils. We work closely with these other groups for the overall benefit of Billingshurst”, she said. The Partnership is a Company Limited by Guarantee and is made up of a Board of Directors, a Management Committee, and representatives of some 15 other groups of volunteers. These include the Billingshurst Lions and Rotary, Station Road Garden Committee, the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce, the Billingshurst Choral Society, the Billingshurst Historical Society and several other social, welfare and church groups as well as individuals. Anyone is welcome to join our meetings and our website (billingshurst.community) is regularly updated with information on our activities and other

community information. While each group has its own programmes, the Partnership runs overarching projects with the support of the other groups. Everyone involved is dedicated to delivering results that enhance the well-being of Billingshurst and its surroundings. The Partnership works closely with the Parish, District and County Authorities to achieve its objectives. Mrs Campbell said, “The Billingshurst Community Partnership now moves forward with its member groups, the District and Parish Councils and Chamber of Commerce to deliver Billingshurst’s Community-led Plan. The village’s vision is ‘That of a thriving community with our residents, young and old, proud of our village and celebrating our surroundings, our achievements and our future’. We endorse that totally”, she said. Mrs Campbell said that under Community-led Plan 2015-2020 that the Partnership signed jointly with the Parish Council and the Chamber of Commerce, it leads on a number of Topics. She said, “We lead tasks that work with Youth of our community, Safety and Security, the Senior Citizens, the Disadvantaged, Antisocial behaviour, certain Economic and Transport projects, Commercial and Tourism initiatives and the Arts and Sports and Recreation projects”. “The last 10 years were just our first 10 years”, Mrs Campbell concluded. BilliFest was a Blast! Jengers Mead, Billingshurst – Saturday 5th December
T
he Tenth BilliFest Family Fun Day & Christmas Fayre held in the heart of Billingshurst on Saturday 5th December was a blast with families turning out in droves despite the 40mph gusts of wind. But the weather did nothing to blow out the Christmas spirit nor to delay Santa, who arrived dead on time to be met by scores of awestruck children and their mums and dads. Each child received a free early Christmas present. The Billingshurst Community Partnership organising team started work with the gazebo contractor in Jengers Mead at 6am,well before dawn. Stallholders arrived at 7am and everything was ready by 9am ready to receive the throng of visitors. Families and community leaders were all involved, including County Councillor Amanda Jupp and District Councillors, Kate Rowbottom and Gordon Lindsay, who took their shifts on the raffle stall and as traffic marshals. Parish Councillors, Alan Grant and Barry Barnes helped with the setup and take down, and Guests of honour were Councillor Brad Watson OBE and Mrs Watson. Councillor Watson is Chair of the North Horsham County Local Committee, which granted funding for the gazebo hire.
Ken Johnson, Chair of the organising team said, “BilliFest was a great success despite the draughty conditions. Our thanks go to everyone who came and to our guests and sponsors. None of the gazebos took off and everyone had a good time,” he added The non-stop entertainment, supported by Radio Weald, which is run by the Weald School Sixth Form, included George the Sax player, swinging Rob Nicholl, Lifestyle Fitness ‘join in’ sessions, the Billingshurst Choral Society, the Billingshurst Ukulele Band, Cotillion Sussex folk group, Horsham Boom Tribe Samba Band and, of course, Punch & Judy (see second photo). In addition to the WSCC Community Initiative Fund, BilliFest’s main sponsors include Bellway, Devine Homes, Fabrica A2Dominion, Harwoods Group, Persimmon, Rydon, Saxon Weald, Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce, Billingshurst Community Partnership and Billingshurst Lions. Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ 2015: a successful year At the KKWG AGM the four Honorary Officers were re-elected – Chair, Dr Jill Sutcliffe; Vice Chair, Phil Donaghue; Hon Secretary, Katy Fletcher, and Hon Treasurer, Miranda Alderton. Thanks to much local support the group has had a very successful year with the rejection of the application for Oil/Gas Exploration by Celtique Energie Weald Ltd (CEWL), their early withdrawal from the Public Inquiry (PI) and a partial costs award in light of the money the group had had to raise in order to take part in the PI, the discussion of Boxal Bridge by the full West Sussex County Council on 16th October and the adoption of a resolution committing the Council Highways Dept to working with both Parishes and confirmation of yet another rare bat species using Northup Copse and the woodlands opposite. We did not do this on our own and are very grateful for everyone’s assistance including gathering signatures, raising and donating funds, talking to people, designing posters and promoting the group’s activities to residents and via the press. A year ago we did not imagine we would succeed. Many thanks for your ongoing support and best wishes for 2016. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. Tel: (01403) 700395

A Happy New Year from Billingshurst Fire Fighters
A
all the firefighters at Billingshurst Fire Station would like to wish you a very Happy New Year. We hope you stayed safe during the Christmas period. 2016 will be a year of changes within the station. We hope to see one of our firefighters move up the ranks to become a Crew Manager. We also have three guys in their probation periods and with further exams throughout the year they should become competent. We are also expecting a new fire appliance on station – we all know there’s nothing like a shiny red fire engine! This winter has been quite kind with the weather and like others, we have been expecting the rain to arrive which will bring a busy spell of emergency calls. Please do your bit to help and make sure you increase your stopping distances on the roads during bad weather – allow at least double the dry
28
distance. Make sure your tyres have plenty of tread. We are often called out to flood related calls which can sometimes be avoided with a little bit of extra care. Please visit www.gov.uk and search for Flooding for more information. Have you ever thought about helping an elderly person or someone who, through age or disabilty, is unable to just get up and walk to the shops? If we do suffer from a spell of bad weather, popping to the shops for a neighbour goes a long way and doesn’t unduly interrupt your day. In the coming months, we look forward to the arrival of spring which of course means our first Charity Car Wash of the year in March. Please don’t leave it until then though to wash your car! We like cleaning clean cars nearly as much as we enjoy cleaning our fire engine! Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

Norman – Ram of the Moment
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
C
arrying on from last month’s story, ‘Tomorrow it did indeed rain’(!) but not to fear, both sheep and humans re-grouped for the next attempt to get their royal highnesses Ethel and Ellie into the trailer (now a little battered) for their visit to Norman. Nanny went to Scats (Sorry, Moles) and invested in four more hurdles (those clever moveable linking fence panels) and set them up so that the area by the gate became a double catching area. The following Friday, by stealth and good management (of course), all six sheep were lured by biscuit barrel into the catching area and sorted. Ethel and Ellie were the Blind Date winners selected to visit Norman. Then Norman closes the Nanny, armed only with pig board and cunning, shuffled them up the ramp and into the trailer. They moved reluctantly but steadily. Nanny went to shut the trailer gate. You will recall, dear reader, it was savagely rammed the previous week and it was now hanging on by only one hinge but one was enough. YES! THEY WERE IN! To cover the gap underneath she used a hurdle but then found herself in a predicament – she didn’t have the strength to lift the trailer’s tailgate or lower the ramp. She hollered and hollered for Grandad but to no avail – he was doing dishes and wasn’t plugged into his hearing aid anyway. Nanny impatiently and fearfully waited for him to finally appear at the door out of curiosity, whereupon she nobbled him to help her. With a little bit of “Do this”, “Do that” and “No, this way” and inevitably a “Get out of my way and let ME do it” the trailer was finally secured. The truck was backed up, trailer hitched up and pulled out of the catching area. But the task was not yet done. Oh, no… Grandad insisted on driving even though he didn’t know where to go. Nanny sort of knew and
with trusty sat-nav in hand they set off. “Turn here,” she’d say and he would say “What?” “Here!” she’d scream and he’d say “What? Where?” (The hearing problem, remember). But eventually, twenty gruelling minutes later, they arrived at Chez Norman. The gate was locked. They had to phone Andy and wait for him to unlock the gate. All the while the trailer was sticking out halfway across a fairly busy country road. Grandad fussed and stressed. Nanny directed traffic until the gate was unlocked. Yes, part two of this story was a Carry On in more ways than one! The trailer was towed down a lane and left outside a paddock and, with Andy’s help, the girls were released into a paddock. gap on Ethel The remaining trailer gate hinge gave up the battle and the gate fell off. (You really couldn’t make this up!) At last though, Ethel and Ellie had arrived. They were ushered into a seemingly empty enclosure. It wasn’t long before Norman and his harem appeared. A handsome dude with curling horns and a distinguished greying woolly fleece, he was immediately interested in the newcomers. Very interested. “I was right,” said Nanny as he lumbered over to Ethel. “I knew she’d be the first.” Ethel disagreed. She took one look at her new husband and ran away. Norman followed. And the dance began. The humans watched with amusement for a while. “They won’t be too fat for long,” predicted Andy as they went back up to the house to do all the paperwork and have a well-earned cup of tea. Afterwards, already dreading the drama of getting Ethel and Ellie home again, Nanny drove (with the trailer, and with Grandad directing) back to the little farm in Billingshurst to wait for Mother Nature to do what she does best… Yvonne Fleece Photo: Yvonne Fleece

Weald Students Champion National Cancer Charity
W
eald Sixth Form students kicked started their new charity partnership with CLIC Sargent last week with a pyjama dress-up event and cake sale fundraising bonanza, raising an impressive £416 in just one day. CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people and their families (www.clicsargent. org.uk), is a cause close to the heart of the Weald Sixth Form. Rachel Harvey, member of the prefect team and charity committee believes that this is a cause that will really engage her fellow Sixth Form students, “This year we wanted to support a charity that supports people of our own age. Most people know or have known someone affected by cancer, so CLIC Sargent seemed like the perfect fit for us.” Tom Backshall, Head of Sixth Form went on to say, “We’re incredibly proud of the fantastic start to this year’s charity partnership. This student-led initiative is a great example of the tight knit community we have here at The Weald Sixth Form.” Helen Farquharson, CLIC Sargent Fundraising Manager for Surrey and West Sussex also expressed her delighted with the new partnership, “We are
delighted that The Weald is supporting CLIC Sargent as their chosen charity. The energy and enthusiasm of their students is fantastic and we are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. Every day ten families in the UK are told the devastating news their child has cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, so a pupil could be in class one week and in hospital the next. CLIC Sargent exists to support them through their treatment and make their lives as normal as possible. The support of The Weald will help us provide vital support for children and young people with cancer, and their families.” Students have set themselves an ambitious £1,500 fundraising target that they hope to smash over the coming year. This is supported by an active programme of fundraising initiatives including a pool tournament, a Halloween theme dress-up day and the possibility of a charity ball. There are a number of dustbins in the William Penn School playground which are available for the staff, children, parents, grandparents and the local community to recycle waste resources which should go to landfill. However, instead they are diverted into a special recycling scheme to raise money for our children. Please collect these waste resources to raise money for our children and so new goods can be made with them. If these waste resources go to landfill it is likely to take thousands of years to biodegrade into a material which we might be able to use again. A few of the many items which can be recycled include sweet biscuit wrappers, fruit and vegetable pouches for babies, pens, coffee bag refill bags, plastic bottle trigger heads (from cleansing products), outer foil packaging for coffee, tea and chocolate drinks, plastic air fresheners. The full list of recyclable items can be found here:

Gardening resolutions
I
’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions. 1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it, gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span. 2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them. 3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy.

4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening. This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to ten parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time. 5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. It’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7. I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties. Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy. Rachel Leverton

Beekeeping Beginners Day 2016
T
he Wisborough Green Division of the West Sussex Beekeepers Association is holding a Beekeeping Beginners Day on Saturday 5th March 2016 at Pulborough Village Hall. This is the eleventh year of this popular event that is one of the largest beginner’s courses in the country. Many attendees have been recommended by others who have previously attended, many coming from some distance away. This highly regarded course has been designed and will be presented by experienced beekeepers who teach at the large well equipped Wisborough Green teaching apiary. This has been at the same location for over 45 years and the experience gained from teaching a large number of beginners has helped in developing the course. It will suit those who have no experience of beekeeping, but would like to investigate this absorbing hobby that is fast growing in popularity. It is also suitable for those who have some experience and may have kept bees for a short time, but not had any guidance. Many people have always wanted to keep bees but need to know more. How much time will it take? How much will it cost? Is my garden suitable? How

much do I need to know? All these usual questions will be answered without having to make any commitment. For those who think they will be able to manage there will be follow up sessions at the teaching apiary in the active season. These will be under the supervision of experienced beekeepers with protective equipment provided. Among the subjects covered will be how to start, information sources, teaching facilities, siting beehives, equipment required, what bees collect, the bees’ life cycle, and much, much, more. Contact Roger Patterson (01403) 790637, 07976 306492, roger-patterson@btconnect.com for course details, or Gordon Allan (01798) 343470, petworthgordon@btopenworld.com to book. The Wisborough Green Division is the largest in West Sussex BKA and covers a wide area. Information will be available for surrounding beekeeping associations. Details of this friendly group can be found on www.wgbka.org.uk where you can find further details of the Beginners Day. Basic tips for getting the most out of your printer Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
W
e get a lot of people experiencing problems with their printers and most of them are to do with getting documents to print correctly. So this month we thought we would give you some tips on getting the most out of your printer. These tips will not cover every type of printer nor every type of document, so they are more about the functions that most printers have when used with the application most people use: Word. The confusing thing about printers is that there are two lots of settings: the printer’s settings and the application’s settings. If these two lots of settings aren’t configured correctly then you won’t be able to print what and how you want. Let’s start with the document settings, which can be found (in Word) under the File menu and then in Page Setup. Here you choose the printer you are printing to (normally there’s only one choice unless you have more than one printer). Then you need to make sure that the paper size is set correctly. In Europe this would normally be A4 but, being an American application some people find their Word is by default set to American Letter size, which is smaller so it won’t look right when printed. Then come the printer settings. These choices will appear when you click on print (Ctrl + P). Here you can choose lots of things such as number of copies, colour, double-sided and collation. In Word, most of these options will be found in either
Pages (or Copies & Pages) or Print Settings – you will see these options only once you have clicked on Print and they are either presented as a drop down menu or in tabs along the top of your print pop up. Print Settings (or possibly Layout) is where you should find the double-sided printing option as well where you can choose how many pages per sheet you want to print per page. For example, say you have set up a document in Word sized at A5 but you are printing on A4 paper to then cut in half, you would choose the 2 pages per sheet option. Lastly, Print Preview is your friend. Previewing a document before you commit to print is very useful especially if you are doing a bigger print run, as is doing a test print. Previewing can show you if your margins aren’t right. Most printers can’t print right up to the edges of the paper and if your margins in your document are too close to the edge then your printer can’t print it. That’s when things get cut off and/or you get the error message “Margins are set outside of the printable area”. All you need to do here is go into your document settings and make the margins bigger. Problem solved. We hope these basic pointers will help resolve any confusion when trying to print documents in Word. The same basics apply to most other applications, the options may just be in different menus than those mentioned. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Surviving winter
A
s we come into a brand new year I hope you are all managing to survive what the good old British weather is throwing at us! The bane of most horse owners’ lives is mud – everything seems to be covered in the stuff and fields are looking as if the Army has been practising tank manoeuvres on them! But don’t worry, you will get through this and although it seems like it will never arrive, spring isn’t far away. Finding time to keep your horse exercised can be difficult in the winter months, even if you have access to an arena they can sometimes be out of action due to flooding or freezing up. Booking an indoor school can be an option so why not treat yourself to a lesson or two if there is one nearby, it will give both horse and rider something to think about as well as inspiration for the season ahead. Keep an eye on local riding club websites as they will often run clinics over the winter giving you a chance to get lessons at subsidised rates as well as being able to meet up with like-minded people. Lunging and long reining can be a great way to get you and your horse exercised if you haven’t the time or desire to tack up and ride, I find long reining a great way of getting horses thinking forwards as well as strengthening the legs and building some fitness, especially if you can incorporate some hill work into your sessions. Working the horse in hand can also give your horse plenty to think about, especially working over and around poles on the ground; this can also be done if the arena is frozen as everything can be done at a steady walk! If you are lucky enough to be able to ride before or after work cut down on time spent grooming – invest in some full neck rugs to help keep your horse clean so you spend less time scraping mud off and more time in the saddle. As long as you groom the areas where his tack goes thoroughly you can leave the rest and give him a good going over when you have more time! I also find that plaiting long manes helps keep them cleaner and putting plenty of mane and tail spray in the tail helps prevent the mud from sticking. One good thing about winter is that it is a great time
to help native ponies shift excess weight. If your pony is not in work and left unclipped try to resist the temptation to rug him. Provided they have access to shelter a healthy native pony is extremely able to cope with anything the British weather can throw at him; if unrugged he can use up some of his body fat keeping warm and it is much healthier for the pony to go into spring nice and slim. Weekly use of a weigh tape is advised for use on all horses. Make sure you have a plentiful supply of road salt to put down when the weather becomes freezing so ice doesn’t form on the yard. Lag water pipes and taps if you haven’t already done so and keep a few containers of water in a sheltered place as an emergency water supply – I always fill the kettle the night before too! Buy plenty of extra haynets as you can spend a little more time filling these on a weekend ready to just grab and hang during the week when time may be at its tightest. With mucking out, if your horse is a suitable candidate consider a form of deep littering the bed; this is a very economic way to manage bedding as well as providing a comfortable, supportive bed for your horse to lie on. A deep litter bed should NEVER smell and the top of the bed must always be dry, it is also much less time consuming to manage as you just remove the droppings on a daily basis and remove wet areas once a week on a semi-deep litter system; this will free up more time for riding! When it comes to stable rugs consider using layers, not only are they warmer than a single heavyweight rug but by putting a lightweight rug on top you will find it much easier to keep this clean as very light rugs can be washed in a domestic washing machine saving you money on rug washing. Remove and refit rugs each day checking for any rubs. I hope you all had a good Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year with the best of luck for 2016! Jeannette Douglas. Hunt Nature Park’s viewing platform officially opened
A
Picnic area where people will eventually be able to watch a canal being restored was officially opened on 24th October. Around 100 people watched Guildford MP Anne Milton launch the outdoor dining site – on a viewing platform in Hunt Nature Park, alongside the A281 Horsham Road at Shalford. Mrs Milton unveiled a commemorative plaque in the centre of the unusual hexagonal decking, which is in a wildlife park created by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT). The platform, on the route of the waterway being restored by the trust, currently offers views across the Cranleigh Waters stream to veteran oak trees, meadowland and shallow ponds. Philip Oliver, manager of WACT’s Bramley Link project, told the crowd it would be an ideal place to watch the canal being re-created when the time comes. Explaining the Trust’s plans for bringing the canal back to life in the area, he said the park demonstrated the commitment to creating a ‘green corridor’ along the length of the waterway. The Trust’s chairman, Sally Schupke, also stressed the intention of extending the linear park down towards Bramley: “It’s great to be providing facilities which benefit the people of Guildford, Shalford,
48
Bramley and the surrounding villages and the many people who come here on the Wey-South Path.” Mrs Milton declared the viewing platform open following entertainment by a lively local band and the serving of refreshments to those present. She praised the work of the Trust in establishing the park as part of its plan to restore the Wey & Arun Canal from Shalford to Pallingham in West Sussex. “There are wonderful views from here and I hope people come and enjoy this excellent facility which is so close to the centre of Guildford,” she added. Hunt Nature Park is on land leased by WACT from Surrey County Council. It is being developed using a bequest from Trust supporters Doris and Hunt. Restoration of the first stretch of the canal’s Bramley Link recently received a major boost with the signing of a lease to use farmland owned by Susan and Malcolm Brenton. Council at the Heart of the Community It has been a busy few months for Billingshurst Parish Council working hard for the community of Billingshurst. The Parish Council is committed to work in partnership with community organisations for the benefit of all our residents, businesses and visitors. The Parish Council cares for the environment and invests time in community organisations that work for the benefit of others including the Friends of Station Road Gardens who are committed band of volunteers that care for Station Road Gardens. Their latest addition to the Gardens are raised planted beds suitable for disabled access to ensure everyone in our community can share in the Gardens. Thakeham Homes have kindly provided seven new trees to replace the leylandii hedge removed from the boundary with Myrtle Lane. Cllr. Wilding continues to fully support the Billingshurst Action Group investigating the causes of flooding in the parish. The Parish Council has arranged full clearance of the Parbrook watercourse running through Lower Station Road recreation ground as part of its riparian landowner responsibility to keep watercourses running clear. Scalpings have been provided through one of the Parish Council’s contacts for the access road to the Manor Fields allotments. The Council’s Property Committee has supported the Billingshurst Sports and Recreation Association with a five yearly electrical safety inspection of the Jubilee Fields sports pavilion and remedial repairs to the emergency lighting. Plans are in place for annual maintenance of the Jubilee Fields skate park including application of preservative to the ramps in the summer. The Jubilee Fields Fireworks were another successful event run in partnership by several community organisations; the Parish Council has written to congratulate them on the success of this community event and fundraising for local charities. The Parish Council’s Youth Club continues to run on a Tuesday evening at the Jubilee Fields pavilion. It has a full membership and needs more volunteers to be able to offer more places to new members. Horsham District Council has agreed to transfer the freehold of the Mill Lane public conveniences from Horsham District Council to Billingshurst Parish Council for the sum of £1. This will enable the Parish Council to press ahead
with its plans to refurbish the public toilets. Recently lockable toilet roll holders have been installed to prevent the frequent theft of toilet rolls! The Parish Council has campaigned to the Prime Minister to lobby the government to exempt public toilets from non-domestic rates. This could save the Parish Council £1,200 a year. An application has been made by the Parish Council to the British Heart Foundation for funding for public access defibrillators at Adversane to be installed in the bus shelter and at Five Oaks to be installed on the side of Watsons showroom. It has been a difficult few months in the village with a high level of littering, graffiti and vandalism. It is especially saddening that the efforts of the Friends of Station Road Gardens have been desecrated with the destruction of benches and the newly installed play equipment at Cherry Tree Close funded by s106 grant funding has been heavily graffited. Worse still, the vandals removed several bolts from the new equipment potentially making it unsafe for the children who wished to use the equipment for the purpose it was provided. Sussex Police are under immense pressure to reduce their budget by £56 million by 2020, which will see a reduction in the number of Police Officers and staff next year. The Parish Council is committed to helping at the heart of its community and is bidding to become a cluster pilot in West Sussex with Pulborough Parish Council to fund our own Community Warden. They will be the eyes and ears of our community and work with community organisations, the Police and other authorities for the quality of life of our residents. Plans for the future continue to be at the forefront of the Parish Council’s work and the Council will be focussing on the preparation of a Neighbourhood Plan for Billingshurst over the next year. In order for the Plan to be fully inclusive, the Parish Council needs to hear from its residents and community organisations about your aspirations, needs and wishes for the future of Billingshurst. Please do take the time to get involved and have your say on the Neighbourhood Plan, and importantly tell us what infrastructure the parish needs for the next 20 years to make Billingshurst a sustainable community for all.

Our Community Volunteers – meet Dave Topper
D
ave Topper has spent 35 years of his adult life involved in the Scouting movement in Billingshurst: first as a parent helper, later as Group Quartermaster, Assistant Leader, Leader, Assistant District Commissioner and now as County Scout Leader for West Sussex. However, his Scouting links go further… Dave was a scout in Billingshurst himself (“In a Nissan hut, in those days”) and is delighted that both his children and now his grandson have also been part of the uniformed movements. He also enjoys seeing his former scouts around the village, a number of whom now have children who are involved in Scouting, and some of whom have become leaders themselves. He is proud of the links that the Scouts have with Guides in the area too, which are strengthened, no doubt, by joint initiatives such as the Hallowe’en Hike, now in its 21st year, which came about from one of his ideas. His current role is largely administrative but he continues to offer support for individual Scout groups as well as larger events such as the enormously popular WS camp held every four
years, ably assisted by his wife, Mavis. Dave acknowledges that times have changed, with more paperwork and health and safety issues to deal with and understands that sometimes people are reluctant to take on the responsibility of leading such a group, but he is enthusiastic about its advantages. “I get a great kick out of seeing these young people achieve things” he says, but also points out that Scouts also gives leaders a chance to have new experiences themselves and to have great fun doing it. “Canoeing with adults would probably be a more serious affair,” he says, “but with a group of kids their main aim is to see if they can tip you out of your canoe!” In April this year he was awarded the prestigious Silver Acorn, presented to those who have given more than 20 years of especially distinguished service to Scouting. He is unassuming about his contribution, saying simply, “Hopefully we’ve changed a few lives”.
