e are lucky that we have so many events and activities in our area; the undoubted highlight of December was BilliFest which returned to the High Street once again. As with all such events they don’t happen by themselves – there is a huge amount of behind-the-scenes work that people attending may not be aware of, such as obtaining a licence to close the High Street to traffic and liaising with all the shops and businesses. The organising team did a brilliant job. I am sure all who attended throughly enjoyed the event, I know I did. Happy New Year to all Village Tweet readers! Cauliflower Cheese
Roasted for flavour and figure!
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C / Gas 6. Place the cauliflower florets into an ovenproof dish and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and starting to brown. 2. Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan, then adding the flour and cooking for 1-2 minutes, or until a light golden colour. Gradually add the milk until smooth, and then cook over a gentle heat for 3-4 minutes stirring constantly until thickened. 3. Add the grated nutmeg. Reduce the heat then add the mustard and cheddar cheese. Put the roasted cauliflower into the sauce and mix so that all the florets are coated. Pour the cheese and cauliflower mixture back into the roasting dish, sprinkle over the parmesan and return to the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden-brown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve as a supper dish with a green salad.
Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time 30 minutes.

BilliFest brilliant in the High Street!
T
wo thousand people thronged into Billingshurst High Street for the BilliFest Family Fun Day and Christmas Fayre on 3rd December, and the new Vicar Billingshurst’s St Mary’s Church, and his wife, formally opened the event to the sound of St Mary’s bells. It was the first time in nearly ten years that the event had been held in the High Street. The Reverend David and Mary Beal cut the ribbon with Billingshurst Community Partnership organising Committee Chairman, Ken Johnson, at the south end of the High Street at 10am. The Reverend Beal, his wife and their family have lived in the area for nearly 20 years. For the last 19 years, the Beals have lived in Slinfold, Itchingfield, and currently in West Chiltington. Ken Johnson said after the event, “Everyone came to see BilliFest back in the High Street. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive”. He added, “We are indebted to our main sponsors FABRICA by A2Dominion, Billingshurst Lions and the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce. Out team sold 3,200 raffle tickets thanks to the great prizes that included a car for the weekend courtesy of Harwoods, a round of golf for four from Slinfold Golf Club, and fabulous cash vouchers thanks to

Architectural Plants, Sussex Carpet Brokers, Aurac Sound + Vision and Hepworth Brewers”. The children’s Find the Names of the Gnomes hunt prizes included family tickets for Aladdin at The Capitol in Horsham, and for Adventures of Peter Pan at The Pavilion Theatre, Worthing. There were also tickets to Drusillas Zoo Park in Alfriston. Radio Weald, (run by Weald School students) again handled the music and PA, and the non-stop entertainment included George on Sax, Lifestyle Fitness, the Billingshurst Choral Society, the Billingshurst Ukulele Band, Cotillion Sussex folk group, Horsham Boom Tribe Samba Band, Horsham Magog Dancers, Stephen Foster (David Bowie tribute), Rob Nicholl swings, and Punch & Judy. The new brand comes at a busy time for the “When the population is aging and with our hospice as it also announces a new colleagues in social care and the NHS being organisational strategy and continues to stretched and tested, St Catherine’s is clearly progress its planning application for a new only meeting a fraction of the need.” building in Pease Pottage. Earlier this year the According to the hospice, which is the hospice was rated Outstanding by the Care palliative care expert for West Sussex and East Quality Commission. Surrey, more people living longer combined with Laura Mitchell, St Catherine’s Hospice financial pressures on the NHS and social care
St Catherine’s Hospice into the future Almost 40 years ago, a group of pioneers realised that local people in Horsham weren’t getting the expert care they needed when they were dying. There was no local hospice, and hospitals simply weren’t equipped to give the kind of excellent care that people deserved. Instead of ignoring this, they acted and courageously fundraised for, and built a new hospice – St Catherine’s Hospice. Since then, we’ve cared for thousands of people and supported those closest to them, when life comes full circle. But 40 years is a long time. Now, in a year when more people have been referred to us than ever before, we’ve invested in changing the look and feel of our charity. We did this because research has shown that despite serving our community for more than 30 years, local people just don’t know who we are, or how our expert services can help them. At a time when the NHS is stretched, the population is aging and people need us most, our community simply don’t realise that we’re there for them. This also impacts on our fundraising; all our care is free thanks to the generosity of our local community. But if people don’t know we exist, how can they support us? Put simply, something has to change and if we are to reach more people who need our help, we need to raise more money. So, we’ve followed in the footsteps of our founders and made some brave decisions. We’ve updated our patient materials, website and logo and re-evaluated how we work with our community to make sure we will be able to respond to the ever increasing need for our care. All these changes boil down to one thing for local people; we’ll be there. We’ll be there at a time when other people don’t know what to say or do. We won’t be afraid to have the difficult conversations that other people won’t and we'll be honest when answering people’s questions. We’ll also be there, being clear about our needs to raise funds from our community, for our community because without St Catherine's, life would be more difficult for people coping with death and dying. At St Catherine’s, we understand that living with a life-limiting illness or caring for someone with one, can be frightening, lonely and sometimes all-consuming but we want everyone reading to know we’re there to help. Hello from your Age UK Horsham District Village Agent – Jane Cullum
H
ello again, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. It was really nice to see those of you that popped by my table at Billifest in December on what was a busy, bright but chilly day. The day had a great atmosphere with all sorts going on and I was happy to be a part of it. As most of you will know by now the Village Agent service provides a trusted and well known friendly face at the heart of the rural community and is in place to be of help to any village residents over the age of 50. The service aims to make a positive impact by helping people to gain access to services and information. I am always just a phone call away if you have any queries, financially (query on Benefit entitlement?) practically (help around your home?) or socially (want to get out more?) I also have knowledge of clubs and groups that operate locally in Billingshurst. I attend
most groups as often as I can to offer a face-to-face service or I can arrange a visit to your home. Most of us will have our heating on at this time of year. If you are worried about the cost of this please get in touch as our Information & Advice service can look at whether you might be entitled to receive more help financially. It’s important to stay warm in our homes. Please give me a call or e-mail on the contacts below if you feel the Village Agent service could be of any help to you, or mention to family or friends in the village. Great ‘snow’ of support for St Catherine’s Hospice Santas vs Elves
C
hristmas spirit filled Horsham Park on Sunday 27th November as more than 150 Santas and Elves went head-to-head in a competitive fun run for St Catherine’s Hospice, proudly sponsored by London Gatwick Airport. Runners of all ages dressed in Team Santa or Team Elf T-shirts to get ’elfy and run a 4km route through the park before heading back to find out whether it was their team that had snowstormed to victory. As a Santa crossed the finish line first, a cheer rung out as Team Santa were announced Horsham’s first ever Santas vs Elves champions. After assembling for a fun warm up ahead of the 10am start, Team Santa and Team Elf runners queued up on the start line. MP for Horsham, Jeremy Quin also came out to officially open the event and cheer on the runners. He said, “It’s been heart-warming to see so many people come out to support St Catherine’s Hospice Their efforts are giving others a very special gift this Christmas – the gift of care. The many attendees have had a fantastic time and it’s been the perfect way to kick-start Horsham’s Christmas season.” Cheered on by a crowd of lively spectators, supporting either Team Santa or Team Elf, once runners crossed the finish line, they were
12
rewarded with a medal and mince pie before taking selfies with Santa at the selfie station. Among the runners was Alison Addy, who is Head of Community Engagement at Gatwick Airport and competed as part of Team Santa. Alison took part with a team from Gatwick Airport who also proudly sponsored the event. She said, “Santas vs Elves was really great fun and I’m definitely feeling festive now! It was so lovely to see all ages coming together and clearly having a great time while supporting their local hospice. I’m really proud to have played my part in raising money to help local terminally ill people this Christmas.” Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “It was great to see so many people take part in our first ever Santas vs Elves fun run. Their donations will go a long way towards providing care during the festive season. Our four Santas vs Elves Runs are on target to raise an estimated £30,000 which is amazing! I’d like to say a huge thank you to all our Horsham runners and to Gatwick Airport for their generosity in sponsoring the event.” If you would like to find out more about supporting St Catherine’s, please visit: www.stch.org.uk Laura Mitchell, St Catherine’s Hospice Photo: Brendan Foster Photography
Health and wellbeing / Accountancy Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) The Billingshurst area benefits from have a large number of PAD sites, almost 20 in fact, a majority of which have been set up by the Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT). In the event that someone suffers a cardiac arrest, the ambulance service call taker will let the person who has dialled 999 know if a PAD site is near-by, give them details of the location and an access code if required. The call taker can also talk through the use of the defibrillator over the phone, although all the defibrillators have very clear voice prompts and are very safe and easy to use, even for anyone who has never received any training. PAD sites in the area have been activated a number of times in the past and although it would be nice if they were never needed, BEAT remains committed to covering the area with as many PAD sites as possible in order to give anyone who is unfortunate enough to suffer a cardiac arrest as greater chance of survival as possible. BEAT has run a number of very successful training sessions on basic life support and defibrillator familiarisation in the Billingshurst area and the team are happy to arrange further sessions in the New Year if there is a demand. If anyone is interested in attending such a session, please e mail paulberryadi@btinternet.com. More information about BEAT, including a list of PAD sites, can be found at www.beatresonders.org.uk Paul Berry

Singing is good for you!
Singing for Pleasure Do you like singing? Do you enjoy listening to singing? Would you like to sing but think you can’t? Then why not come along to a Singing for Pleasure session? We are a friendly, informal group of singers in the more ‘mature’ age group who meet once a month at Billingshurst Community Centre for a fun afternoon of singing along to popular songs, old and new. We are not a choir, there are no auditions, and everyone is welcome to join us for a sing-song, a cup of tea and friendly company. The medical profession is increasingly telling us about the physical and mental benefits of singing in a group, and judging by the way we all feel after one of our singing sessions, this is certainly true! Our January meeting is on 12th January at 3pm till 4.30pm. We look forward to seeing you. Carol Terry

New Year / Health and wellbeing
New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Want to Keep
A
ll too often New Year’s resolutions seem to focus on doing more of what we don’t enjoy, and less of what we do enjoy. So this year, we thought we’d give you our suggestions for resolutions you’ll actually want to keep. Learn something new. Whether you want to get a qualification so you can get a better job, or you just fancy trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you try something new. www.futurelearn. com is a good place to start. It offers hundreds of free, short online courses. Many are delivered by leading UK universities. You could try writing fiction, exploring digital technologies, or learning about forensic science. If you prefer face-toface tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history. Enjoy time outdoors. Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely
find you feel calmer and happier as a result. Take time to cook. Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you could try a box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-to-follow recipes. Appreciate the little things. We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often. Whatever your New Year’s resolution, we wish you all the luck in keeping it. Kate Duggan

Book reviews / Accountancy
A Good Read January’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Rosie Project – Graeme Simsion There have been several novels published in recent years which feature an autistic character; The Rosie Project is one of them. Don is a scientist working at a university in Australia. In his late 30s he is single and largely contented. His day is meticulously mapped out, and routine is a part of everything he does. He is never early (a waste of precious time) or late (rude and puts everything out of time), and can’t abide small talk. He also has lobster every Tuesday. As the novel opens he is lecturing on Aspergers at a conference but it is not a lecture from a personal perspective. Don is undiagnosed, yet many friends and parents of those on the spectrum will identify his traits. A chance conversation with the conference organiser leads him to consider if he can apply scientific methodology to the search for a suitable partner, and The Wife Project is born. Readers will warm to Don, and his naïve approach to relationships and life in general, and anyone who is currently negotiating the dating minefield might wonder if it would all be easier with the aid of his questionnaire?
North Child – Edith Pattou This Young Adult novel is published by Usborne Books. Based on the Norwegian fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon, this sweeping fantasy story is set in the snow-covered lands of Scandinavia. Legend has it that children born facing north are destined to travel far from home and die, crushed under ice and snow. When Eugenia’s eighth and youngest child is born her belief in superstition leads her to fear for her daughter’s future. She lies about the circumstances of Rose’s birth but it would seem that fate cannot be deceived by a lie. As Rose grows up she feels out of place in the family and longs to travel, with a desire for adventure. Her unease, combined with a wanderlust means that when a white bear appears and offers her family a way out of poverty and ill-health if she will come away with him to a land far away in the north, she readily accepts. Here she meets a mysterious stranger in a castle hidden in a mountain. Who is he and why does he only appear at night? Faced with challenges she discovers her purpose in life in a tale of love, betrayal, and adventure. This rich story will appeal to readers from the age of ten upwards and is a great introduction to epic fantasy.

Mastering the Old Silence & Slow Time – the fine art of Benjamin Smith Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, 21st January-24th March
H
orsham has a new ‘old master’ – not a painting, but a painter: Benjamin Smith. Through intensive training and immersion in the techniques of the great painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, this amazing artist has managed to capture the essence of old master paintings and translate that to new contemporary visions. Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are delighted to be able to showcase Benjamin Smith’s work in the new exhibition Silence and Slow Time – the fine art of Benjamin Smith. The stunning exhibition by this award-winning artist shows how the techniques of painting, drawing and composition created by the great painters in the European art tradition are still relevant today. And, when you see Benjamin Smith’s work in the flesh – when you stand in its presence – you will realise just how powerful these techniques and skills are. To translate the image through the medium of paint or pencil into an image that stays with you long after first viewing is a powerful ability that few genuinely have; that is why Old Masters have that status, and precisely why Benjamin Smith is an artist whose work you will want to explore again and again. Among the works on display in Silence and Slow Time – the fine art of Benjamin Smith, is a powerful portrait of Homer, the great Classical author and founder of European literary tradition. In Ben’s hand the portrait resonates power, importance and status, giving meaning and depth to the impact Homer had on world culture. And yet, it has been created with nothing more than a simple pencil and paper. Ben draws on the rich tradition of art academies, where
20
artists perfected their skills through drawing and painting casts, busts and life models, in which the diversity of the human form enabled artists to hone their skills. The exhibition has a number of such works on display, including a bust of Constanza, and life drawings. As Ben has written, “In virtually all mainstream art schools, the tradition of drawing and painting from life has died out. However, a small number of institutions, known as ateliers, in Europe and the United States are seeking to connect with a classical lineage stretching back to the academies of 19th Century Europe and produce a new generation of old masters. Emerging during the 17th century the atelier system later became a common method of training painters. It is a highly structured and systematic curriculum which is passed on from tutor to student. Students work together, each learning from the others with the tutor tailoring their critiques to the student’s individual requirements. Artists trained in the atelier method are now using those methods to create contemporary representational art of the highest quality.” Ben was recently awarded the prestigious Sir Siegmund Warburg Scholarship by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust in recognition of his dedication to traditional fine art. Silence and Slow Time – the fine art of Benjamin Smith opens at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery on 21st January and runs until 24th March. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am5pm, admission free. Billingshurst Scouts & Guides Gang Show 2017 What is a Gang Show? A Gang show is a performance of sketches, dances and musical items based on the original idea of Ralph Reader CBE. This year we will be performing sketches from Disney for the Junior Gang, Jungle book to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts and High School Musical for the Senior Gang. We will also be Celebrating Britain with some flag waving followed by a Finale of all the best songs from the show. There has been a Scout and Guide Show in Billingshurst since the 1980s and we gained National Scout Show Status in 2013, allowing us to call ourselves a ‘Gang Show’. Who can be in our Gang Show? Billingshurst Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, with some District Explorers and County Network Members. The main part of the Gang is importantly made up of children; it doesn’t matter if they think they can’t sing or dance – if they want to be involved we will find a role for them. The Billingshurst Leaders also join in and can
always be relied on to be silly with a comedy song or Sketch. Rehearsals and the Show. The Rehearsals are already in full swing and will continue right up to the show itself. The performances are in the evenings during February half term (22nd-25th February) at the Community Centre. Why? Gang Show is fun – that is why the adults are still involved after all these years and why children return to the cast year after year. It is part of the Scout and Guide Balance Programme, offering children a chance to be Creative and develop themselves. HELP! We are in desperate need of a PIANIST for the rehearsals and the Show itself. Please contact me urgently if you can help or just want to know more. Weald Students visit Oxford University
I
n early December, ten students from Year 11 were very fortunate to be given the opportunity to visit St John’s College, Oxford University. The day was incredibly informative, and we were able to interview several of the university’s students about their experience so far at Oxford, what they are studying and the interview process. We had a tour of the college, during which we viewed the accommodation block, library, chapel and open space areas. We also listened to an interesting talk on the application process and courses offered at Oxford. We were all extremely impressed with the facilities, and when we were taken into the main college library and shown first-edition archaic books, everyone was amazed at the condition they were in and had their mobiles out to take photos. Walking through the corridors, it was hard to ignore the history and beautiful
architecture. After a buffet lunch, we took part in a chemistry taster session. We extended our knowledge from lessons by using their modern technology to solve a murder case, using chromatography methods demonstrated by post-graduate students. The trip gave us a great insight into the best university in the world. It also gave us a glimpse of what to expect in the not too distant future for whichever university we might apply to after we leave The Weald. Additionally, it inspired us all to work harder for our upcoming exams, in order to achieve the grades required for a Russell group university. James Brew, Year 11 student Photo: Weald students visit the ‘best university in the world’ (Cambridge students may disagree!)

Billingshurst Fire Fighters wish you a Happy New Year!
W
e hope you had a lovely Christmas and wish you a happy New Year. As always, the Christmas period is a busy time for all of us on-call. We attended our fair share of fire calls, from chimney fires, floods and RTCs. Just because Christmas is over our Drink Driving campaign still remains all year round. The roads are hazardous during winter frosty mornings, so please take extra care and use our motto ‘Drive to Arrive’. Our first charity car wash of the year will take place in March and then we look forward to planning our Open Day in September. A great day for kids and grown-ups to come and meet the crew on station and see what we really do, with live demonstrations, stalls and crafts. A date will be set for the March car wash in next month’s Village Tweet. We had a great time at BilliFest in December (see photo); the fire engine (sorry, ‘fire appliance’!) is always a crowd-puller, especially with children of course.
News from the station: Matt Gravell (third from left in the photo) has now successfully passed his LGV course, which means now he will work towards becoming an emergency response driver. I can say from being a fire appliance driver myself this role has huge responsibilities. Not only do you have to get the crew to an incident safely, you have to learn how to drive a huge vehicle under pressure getting to an incident. It’s not just about driving fast, we are trained to the highest level on how to ‘Drive to Arrive’ to keep us and everyone around us safe. A small number of drivers panic when they see a big red fire engine behind them and stop in the most awkward places, often suddenly. Our advice is to keep driving on and simply pull over where safe. Make sure you stick to all those new year resolutions! Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station BilliFest December 2016. Photo: Grahame Pearson

The Weald School Charity Reindeer Run
lgar House students at The Weald Shcool recently held their fourth Reindeer Run in aid of Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, raising over £2,800 in just one day. The students ran the equivalent distance between the school and the Chestnut Tree House Hospice near Arundel and back, which is around 48 miles. The route was mapped out around the school campus and Station Road Gardens. Each student who took part donated £1 towards the charity and was then further tasked with collecting sponsorship. Students wore Christmas jumpers, reindeer antlers and flashing red noses to add some more festive cheer. Some even dressed as Santa and various Christmas animals! Weald students have been loyal to Chestnut Tree House for four years, and to date have raised over £10,000 for the charity. Paul Sweeney, Elgar Head of House at The Weald
said, “Students always show a huge amount of effort and dedication to this event every year. They know that it supports a very worthy cause and helps children less fortunate than themselves. Thank you to everyone that supported us, especially parents and the generous company sponsorship we received.” A special thank you to the following companies: Study Experience’, Re-Nu Kitchens, New Street Butchers and Deli, West Sussex Flooring Ltd, Tescos and Tooveys Auctioneers. There’s still time to support students and help them smash their £3,000 target; please visit their Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Paul-Sweeney17. Every penny counts! Book a Talk on the Historic Wey & Arun Canal
F
ascinating insights into a historic canal and its restoration are revealed in talks on offer to clubs and organisations. They are disclosed by speakers from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT), which is bringing a 19th century waterway through Surrey and Sussex back to life. The Trust has a panel of volunteers available to give presentations about the history and restoration of what has been described as ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’. This is the name given in recent years to the Wey & Arun Canal, which once enabled cargo to be taken from the capital to the South Coast. Goods ranging from gold bullion to gunpowder were carried to destinations such as Littlehampton and Portsmouth. WACT speakers give illustrated talks on the canal’s history and the Trust’s restoration projects. They are experts in the history of the waterway, which ran 23 miles from Shalford in Surrey to Pallingham, West Sussex. They explain what is happening at restoration projects along the route, more than half of which has been worked on by volunteer working parties. Bridges
have been rebuilt, locks constructed and towpaths resurrected for use by walkers, cyclists and riders. So far, more than three miles of canal, at Loxwood, have been brought back to full navigation, with public boat trips and special cruises run from April to the end of October and at Christmas. “We can adapt the content and length of our talks to suit individual requirements,” said WACT Chairman Sally Schupke. “We have had a lot of interest from many types of clubs and societies. “Everyone is surprised by the huge number of elements involved in our work to create a green corridor for the benefit of people and wildlife.” The Trust welcomes requests for speakers from Surrey, Sussex and Kent. To arrange a talk, e-mail events@weyandarun.co.uk or call (01483) 505566. Life on the January Farm John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
o the casual observer, now we are in the heart of winter, the countryside can appear to be a rather barren and desolate place. The trees stand gaunt and bare, and frosted fields empty and bleak. Even a walk in the woods can be slightly disconcerting when walked alone with just the wind in the treetops for company. To those who live and work on the land though, there is a whole new spectrum of experiences that parade through the day, the greatest of course being the weather. Farming revolves around the climate that presents itself each day, and winter weather gives no respite to man or beast around the countryside. Those who have animals on the farm will be constantly tending their beasts, feeding, watering and bedding if they are in the sheds, or regularly checking those who stay out in all but the worst of weathers for any signs of trouble. It’s the time when many of the jobs that have been put off during the summer’s busy period can at last be tackled. Hedges are trimmed, ditches cleared, and machinery can be checked over and repairs carried out, with a multitude of other tasks undertaken between the late sunrise and the early dusk. However, there is another side to this winter bleakness that the countryman can appreciate and a late walk around the farm at the end of the day illustrates what I mean… In the depth of a cold winter evening it is amazing how much noise is generated around the farm. Of course there will be the sounds of the farm animals but the wild creatures can also have plenty to say for themselves. There is always an owl hunting somewhere, calling every now and then to mark its passage. The screaming of a vixen which can chill the blood, and the barking cough of a deer from deep within the woods echoes around the meadows as the frosty air nips the nose and finger tips. Up on the reservoir the dark, cold water glitters with the new thin ice forming on its surface and the mallards squabble noisily as they circle in the shallows to keep the water clear so Reynard will not have them for his supper. If it should freeze solid then they will up tails and leave us to seek moving water elsewhere and we will not see them again until the thaw commences. Until then they visit my garden each morning and along with four moorhens, a gorgeous cock pheasant and a wonderful assortment of garden and woodland birds, fill themselves on peanuts and seed. Although this can prove rather expensive on the pocket it’s well worth
38
it to have these truly beautiful animals greeting us each day at first light. I must confess though that there are some creatures that I find less welcome as the cold weather begins. With the onset of the winter chill you can bet your bottom dollar that the rodent population will be seeking the comfort of our warm abodes with renewed vigour. My shed and greenhouse have both been undermined by a family of rats and a battle of wills is now ensuing. I have a suspicion that it’s a forgone conclusion! Meanwhile up in the loft a fieldmouse has decided that she can have rental until the spring, I haven’t seen her as yet, but she has left her calling cards in many places and I have accepted her challenge with some trepidation. I believe she gained access via a forsythia bush growing against a wall – a late pruning is now a sure signal of an example of the closing of a stable door! (Why have I assumed it to be a female?) Finally, and as an aside, I’m sure many of you have read Jerome K Jerome’s wonderful classic: Three Men in a Boat. Here on the farm we have ‘Three Men on a Farm’. With an average age in the mid-seventies we three old codgers meet once a week to try to keep the farm in some form of order by doing odd jobs around the farmhouse garden and surrounding fields. Now well into our second childhood the day is usually spent in great enjoyment. That’s not to say we don’t work hard, it’s just that we seem to find that by insulting each other’s efforts and reluctantly finding out about our failing capabilities we have found a source of unlimited enjoyment. As an example, just prior to Christmas we started to clear the young willow that threatened to overtake the banks of the farm’s smaller reservoir. This entailed chainsawing and hand-cutting the bushes and trying to pull out the tangled mass of developing roots that these plants rapidly produce in the water’s edges when left to their own devices. Derogatory remarks about each other’s efforts wafted back and forth until finally the inevitable happened. With a display of gracefulness that Nureyev would have been proud of, I fell in. It’s amazing how much pleasure this seemed to give my two companions. I squelched across the meadows to my back door, removed and then emptied several litres from my wellies, disrobed from trousers, pants and socks and then had to face more merriment from her indoors. On returning to the others after redressing I then had to endure for the rest of the day a constant barrage of how I reminded them of some old goat called ‘Compo’! Such is life. Happy New Year my friends. John Nash

The Healthy Horse
A
ll horse owners strive to keep their horse in tip top shape and being able to recognise the slightest change in your horse’s physical condition or behaviour is of utmost importance. By doing a thorough check of your horse as part of your daily routine you will become to know if anything is slightly amiss and prevent small problems becoming bigger ones. Checking his vital signs and knowing what is normal for your individual horse is a great place to start. Check his temperature, pulse and respiration rate on a weekly basis or more frequently if you have any concerns over his health. Normal temperature for a horse is around 38°C, respiration rate is 8-12 breaths per minute and pulse is 36 to 42 beats per minute although this can be higher in ponies. Following these daily checks you will be able to pick up on any problems right away. Any loss of appetite, dehydration or excessive thirst should be check by a vet straight away as these signs indicate other health problems. A healthy horse will look alert with clear, bright eyes free from any discharge or swelling. His ears should be pricked or gently flicking backwards and forwards listenening to things going on around him, ears pinned back can mean aggression or pain. Nostrils should be free from any discharge. A small amount of clear fluid is normal but a snotty nose can indicate problems such as a virus, bacterial infection or a dust allergy and will need further investigation. Mucus membranes should be moist and pink; very pale or very red or purple membranes indicate a problem and a vet should be called immediately. Check his circulation by firmly pressing the gum just under the top lip for two seconds until it turns white, when pressure is released the gum should return to its normal pink colour within two seconds, any longer than this can indicate shock. Droppings should be checked daily, although they can change with the diet such as hay and grass quality. They should be well formed, not watery or very hard and get to know what is the right amount for your horse, although again this can increase or decrease depending on quantity and quality of forage, a rough average is around twelve droppings per day. Your horse’s skin and coat should be supple and
shiny, although this can be difficult to determine with an unrugged native pony that is covered in mud! Check for dehydration with a pinch test: pinch the skin on his neck and let go, the skin should flatten within a second, any longer means he’s dehydrated, encourage him to drink by adding apple juice to his water and make feeds wet and sloppy to get more water into him and soak his hay too. Dehydration can be a problem in winter as some horses don’t like to drink very cold water. Check his skin for any cuts and grazes and treat as necessary, also look out for any dry, flaky skin and for any sarcoids that may appear, these lesions are wart like in appearance and may need to be treated by a vet. Monitor his body condition, a healthy horse will have a good covering of flesh and good muscle tone, ribs should be easily felt and he should not have a large, cresty neck unless he is a stallion. If your horse is too fat or too thin re-evaluate his diet and exercise plan accordingly. Feet and legs are probably the most important part of any horse – as the old saying goes, “No foot, no horse”. Pick out his feet daily, check for any stones that may have become wedged in the foot, check for any nasty smells and discharge that may indicate infection such as Thrush. If he’s shod make sure the nails are still flush with the hoof wall and that the shoe is not loose or twisted. Run your hands carefully down each leg checking for any heat or swelling. Watch your horse while he is eating, make sure he’s not dropping any food or having difficulty chewing as this may indicate he has a dental problem. Horses should have a dental check every 6-12 months by either a vet or a qualified equine dental technician. Other signs can indicate dental problems too – in ridden horses a reluctance to take a contact with the bit, bucking, rearing and running off can all indicate a problem within the mouth and should be checked right away. Hopefully you and your horse will have a fabulous 2017 together! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Looking after your birds
I
n the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days. Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to windfall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips. Food. When I was a child my dad told me to only feed birds in the winter, but now the experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good starter mix includes sunflower seeds, canary seed, hemp and husk-free oats. Use a good tube-style feeder and clean it regularly as a build up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can buy rodentproof feeders. I also have one tube-feeder which is set within a type of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and groundhugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis darwinii is a good one, but you can also confound cats with a collar fitted around the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up. Water. A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best to accommodate different bird species, and add a

flat stone or two to aid with getting in and out! Keep it topped up and check daily to see that it hasn’t frozen. If it has, melt the ice with warm water. Your feathered friends will thank you. Plants. Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it, a mixed hedge of hawthorn, holly, dog rose while rowan offers cover and food and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha ‘Soleil d’Or’, Cotoneaster frigidus ‘Cornubia’ and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherry (Prunus padus) or a crab apple such as Malus ‘John Downie’. Nesting. Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them. Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot. Hopefully this has given you some ideas. And don’t forget to take part in The Big Garden Bird Watch on 28th-30th January. (ww2.rspb.org.uk/ get-involved/activities/birdwatch) Rachel Leverton

Dodo skeleton sells for £346,300
ummers Place Auctions, the Sussexbased world-leader in Natural History auctions, has announced the sale of a 95% complete composite skeleton of a Dodo – the first to come up for sale since the early 20th century. It was part of the fourth Evolution sale at Summers Place Auctions on Tuesday, 22nd November 2016 and the hammer went down at £280,000 (£346,300 including buyer’s premium) and was sold to a private collector over the phone. The Dodo bones had been collected by a Dodo enthusiast for 40 years until he realised he had enough bones to create an almost complete skeleton of this extinct bird. There are only about twelve similarly complete skeletons in existence and they are all in museums around the world. Following the sale’s announcement in November’s Village Tweet, the auction hall was

Out and about / Garden Tweet! packed for the pre-sale free public viewing, many realising this would be their last chance to see a Dodo. The Dodo only lived on the island of Mauritius. First seen by Dutch sailors in 1598, it became extinct just 70 years after its discovery. Catching a dodo was comparatively easy because these heavy birds – about the size of a large turkey – had one great advantage – for the sailors that is, not for themselves. They lacked the ability to fly! Thus the species epitomises what can go wrong when humans interfere with an island ecosystem. The Dodo has become a cultural and literary icon, including being famously featured in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Silke Lohmann, Summers Place Auctions

IWA donates £1,000 to Wey & Arun Canal Trust
R
estoration of the Wey & Arun Canal has benefited from £1,000 donated by Guildford and Reading branch of the Inland Waterways Association. A cheque for that amount was given to Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) during October’s commemoration of the waterway’s 200th anniversary, reported in last month’s Village Tweet. Branch treasurer Mike Lewis made the presentation during a celebratory cream tea for members and guests which was the finale of the bicentennial celebrations. Mr Lewis praised the work of the Trust, which is bringing back to life a canal which was once part of an inland route from London to the South Coast. “Wey & Arun Canal Trust is to be commended for the huge amount of work it has done so far and for the impressive projects it is carrying out now,” Mr Lewis told members and guests gathered at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford. “The canal will be an important part of the inland
waterways network and we look forward to the time when it again links up the River Arun with the River Wey. “The IWA is pleased to make a contribution to the restoration fund and we wish the Trust well with its work.” The previous day, Dame Penelope Keith had officially opened the new Compasses Bridge across the canal’s summit level at Alfold, a part of the Trust’s first major navigation restoration project in Surrey. WACT is now in the final planning stages re-creating the canal from the River Wey at Shalford to the Gosden Aqueduct of the outskirts of Bramley. New Year – New Adventures
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
N
anny made a phone call one day in late November to make arrangements to visit Horsham the next day… The following day was a busy one. In the morning Nanny had been trying to clear out one of the compost bins for next year and of course that took more time and energy than expected. Then she’d been to Tai Chi, leaving her feeling more than a little tired. It was now getting dark but Nanny was determined to complete the arrangements she had made the previous day. Because she didn’t know where she was going (apart from knowing it was in Horsham of course) she was using the sat-nav. As she drove around a roundabout (Nanny hated roundabouts – they contributed to four driving test fails before she finally got her licence) the sat-nav indicated she had to turn left up ahead. As she was in the right lane – that’s right as in ‘left/right’, not right as in ‘correct’ – she accelerated away from the traffic lights and changed lanes to the middle lane. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a car speeding up beside her on her left but, as she Tour de France needed to be in the left lane she completed the manoeuvre anyway. Breathing a sigh of relief she relaxed and just followed the computerised voice instructions, turning here and then there until it eventually announced, “You have reached your destination on the left.” She pulled up at the kerb. A car that had seemed to be following her pulled up alongside her in the middle of the road and the driver looked at her. Thinking he needed directions she lowered her window and looked at him expectantly. “Do you always drive like…” The last word was unintelligible so Nanny replied, “I beg your pardon?” “What did you say?” He seemed to be frustrated. “I said, ‘I beg your pardon?’” she repeated politely. He continued. “Do you always drive like that? You nearly hit me. You were in the wrong lane and cut across me.” Truth be told, he sounded a bit cross. “Oh dear,” said Nanny. “What did you say?” Yes, definitely cross. Nanny remained polite. “I said, ‘Oh dear.’” she replied. She then recalled the headlights that had followed her in all the turns she’d had to make. “Did you follow me all this way just to tell me that?” she enquired innocently. “Yes I did.” “That was very kind of you.” “Well someone had to. Someone could have got killed!” He now sounded a little self-righteous. “Well, thank you very much.” Nanny was quite genuine; she appreciated his concern and as he turned to drive away she finished with, “God bless.” Despite remaining calm throughout this conversation, Nanny was a bit shaken. She could
46
imagine recounting the exchange later to Grandad and him telling her off. She decided perhaps she wouldn’t tell him about it. And, anyway, her arrangements needed to be attended to… She knocked on the door of the house to be greeted with a very loud bark. Wondering what breed of dog the bark belonged to she knocked again and waited. And waited. To her relief – it was getting cold – a family in a van soon arrived. The Dad got out and introduced himself as Tony, explaining that he’d had to pick up his daughter from swimming. He disappeared into a small shed and while Nanny was standing there, his little son, Thomas, showed her what he was clutching in his hand. It was a somewhat melted Kinder chocolate bar. He broke off a piece and offered it to her. Nanny was flabbergasted and although she loved chocolate she declined and thanked Thomas very much. Thankfully Tony then wheeled out a lovely silver folding electric bicycle. This was Nanny had come to see! He showed Nanny how it worked and she pulled the brake levers trying to look as if here I come… she knew what she was doing. (She didn’t of course). Tony was very kind and told her if she won the eBay auction he would deliver the bike. As this would mean not having to negotiate the dreaded Horsham roundabouts Nanny thanked him. As soon as she got home – no complaints from other motorists this time – Nanny put in her bid. She knew enough about eBay to put in a slightly higher bid as a safeguard against any last-minute bidders. The next morning she got up early, fired up her PC and looked at the listing for ‘her’ bike to see if it really was hers. Oh, no! There had been another bidder – Nanny was bitterly disappointed. Then she took a closer look and realised the last-minute bidder hadn’t beat her bid. She’d won it! The bike was hers! She quickly paid for it and got in touch with Tony by e-mail. To her delight he told her he would bring it over at lunch time. It was like waiting for Christmas presents to be opened. When Tony arrived just after 1pm she introduced him to Grandad and Tony unloaded the bike. It was just as she had remembered: lovely. Amazingly, Grandad agreed, much to Nanny’s relief. That afternoon she had her first ride. It felt a bit strange, in fact very strange. She hadn’t ridden a bike for (cough!) years. Nevertheless, she managed a few wobbly metres. It would soon be the New Year and Nanny looked forward to practising her riding skills and the new adventures it would bring, though she vowed to steer well clear of roundabouts… And on that note, A Happy, Interesting and Peaceful New Year to you all from the little farm near Billingshurst. Itchingfield Parish Council – Neighbourhood Plan
I
tchingfield Parish Council is now well advanced with its Neighbourhood Plan. Last year a Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group was set up under the Chairmanship of Ian Walker. Neighbourhood Plans are a relatively new concept designed to give local communities the chance to decide where they would like new homes, shops and offices to be built, have their say on what those new buildings should look like, and grant permission for any new buildings they want to see go ahead. It is a government initiative set up under the Provisions of the Localism Act 2012. Since the establishment of the Steering Group, the members have been working extremely hard in different groups tackling specific issues and as a collective to establish the best possible set of recommendations, ideas and potential outcomes for the Itchingfield parish which includes the village of Barns Green. Last July a household survey was conducted with the help of Action in Rural Sussex (AiRs) which aimed to address a wide variety of issues and concerns among residents. There was an extremely encouraging 41% response and the responses were analysed and assessed and these have provided invaluable information and insight for the Steering Group going forward. This was followed up with another public meeting held
52
at the Village Hall in late October (see photo) when details on the feedback from the survey were revealed and discussed. Again this was very well supported with over a hundred people in attendance and plenty of constructive input and debate on a wide number of issues. The Steering Group has now issued a ‘Call for Sites’ in which interested parties are asked to put forward any land that they wish to be considered for housing, business and recreational use along with any community benefits which these sites could provide. Chairman of Itchingfield Parish Council, Penny Simpson commented, “I am delighted with the progress that we have made with our Neighbourhood Plan. Ian Walker and his team have done an outstanding job and the response and interest from the residents has shown just how important planning issues are particularly in a small community like ours”. For further information or if you wish your site to be considered as part of the neighbourhood planning process then please contact the Clerk to the Itchingfield Parish Council by email jancritchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk or by letter to The Parish Clerk, Itchingfield Parish Neighbourhood Plan, c/o 14 Trout Lane, Barns Green, West Sussex RH13 0QD. Our Community Volunteers – Bik-Kay Talbot
B
ik-Kay Talbot brings “If you want something done, ask a busy person” to a whole new level. She is the Chair of Governors for Billingshurst Primary School as well as the Chair of the Billingshurst Primary School Community Association. She also has a full-time job as a volunteering officer for the Alzheimer’s Society. And on Sundays you will find her manning the Customer Service desk at Tesco in Pulborough. Oh, and she is also the mother of two sons. When I comment that being the Chair of both the Governors and the PTA must be a lot of work, she is matter of fact: “I think I just do what I can.” She does admit, however, that she won the County Times Volunteer of the Year award a few years ago, although she insists that she doesn’t do anything special, just uses her skills, and works with the other governors and committee members. (And reads her Governor paperwork while her son plays rugby). Bik-Kay’s background is in PR and marketing; she worked in the property sector before starting a family. This informs of her attitude towards
fundraising for the school – “If you don’t ask, you don’t get!” And she does get! She has secured sponsorship from a number of businesses in the village for items such as match kit for team members, and the school was one of the first in the area to have a full-colour (sponsored) programme for their summer fair, as well as raising money in more traditional ways with the rest of the committee. Bik-kay feels that her experience in recruiting volunteers helps her to see volunteering from both sides and value people’s time. When I ask her how she gets all this done, she shrugs. “You just do it. By the time you have wasted time whingeing about doing it, you could have actually done it.” When I ask why she does all this, she replies that she likes to do something positive in the community, but adds, with a smile, that she wouldn’t do it if she didn’t enjoy it.
