ith the London 2012 Olympics fast approaching it will come as no surprise that this edition of Village Tweet contains several items on the Games: an article on the Olympic Torch (and a Torchthemed Spot the Difference), a special Olympics Kids Page and an Olympic Cities quiz for older readers. We also have articles on the recent Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. I was at the celebrations at Billingshurst Primary School as my partner has four children who attend and was blown away by the variety of costumes worn by many of the children, who clearly enjoyed themselves at this once-in-a-lifetime event. Strawberry Buttermilk Pudding Cake A delicious summery treat, perfect for serving while watching the Olympics
METHOD
1. Preheat your oven to 200°C. Butter a 20cm x 20cm glass or ceramic baking dish. Set aside. 2. In a small saucepan, combine the water, cornflour and 100g of the sugar. Bring to a simmer, add sliced strawberries, and cook for about 3 minutes or until the strawberries become slightly syrupy. Remove from heat and set aside. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and the remaining 60g sugar. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk (or yoghurt), melted butter and vanilla extract. Whisk in the flour mixture until just combined, be careful not to over mix. 4. Add half of the strawberry mixture to the baking dish, spreading it evenly over the bottom. Next, place the batter in large dollops over the fruit and spread evenly, being careful not to mix the fruit with the batter. Finally, spoon the rest of the fruit mixture over the batter, making sure to distribute that evenly as well. 5. Bake for 30 minutes or until top is slightly brown. Cool on a wire rack for at least five minutes before serving. 6. Meanwhile whip the mascarpone and icing sugar in a large bowl until light and airy. Top each slice of pudding with a generous spoonful of mascarpone.
INGREDIENTS 60 ml cup water 1½ tsp cornflour 160g caster sugar (100g for the strawberry syrup and 60g for the sponge) 300g sliced strawberries 125g plain flour 1¾ tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 1 large egg 115g buttermilk (or yoghurt) 115g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g Mascarpone cheese 3 tbsp icing sugar

Jubilee Celebrations at Billingshurst Primary School
N
early 600 pupils celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth on 31st May with a huge street party on the field at Billingshurst Primary School. All the children came dressed in red, white and blue as well as displaying a range of fabulous hats for the Jubilee Hat Competition. There were some amazingly imaginative hats including a London double-decker bus, Big Ben (in centre of photo), Buckingham Palace and even one that lit up. The ‘royal’ Guest of Honour was Sylvie Welch (on right of photo), who has been the school’s crossing patrol for an incredible 40 years. Sylvie said, “I have had the most wonderful afternoon because it was such a surprise. The children looked so wonderful and we all had a lovely time.”
The children had spent a great deal of time preparing for the event. They also performed a whole school country dance on the field and paraded their hats in front of the parents, along with two renditions of the National Anthem. Headteacher, Helen Williamson said, “The children worked really hard to prepare for this special whole-school event and to see nearly 600 children dancing together on the field was really a spectacular sight. Many parents came to see their children parade their hats and dance. The whole afternoon felt very special.” All the children received a commemorative bookmark with the logos of the school and the Diamond Jubilee as a present from the Billingshurst Primary School Community Association. Could you be our new Musical Director? Slinfold Concert Band was founded in 1978, as a small village band. Since those humble beginnings it has become one of the most accomplished and popular bands of its type in the South East. This success has been largely achieved under the baton of Malcolm Gay, our musical director for the past 21 years, pictured here at a recent concert. Malcolm’s sudden death has left the band in shock, and a new MD is urgently sought to carry on the band’s tradition of musical excellence. We are seeking someone with experience of directing a musical ensemble who has the vision and enthusiasm to take the band forward. Could that person be you? The band currently has around 45 players, and performs a wide range of music in an equally wide range of venues, both indoors and out, mainly in Surrey and Sussex but occasionally further afield. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings in Slinfold village hall. If you are interested in learning more about this appointment, please email chairman@slinfoldconcertband.org as soon as possible. You can learn more about the band at www.slinfoldconcertband.org.

Book reviews
A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress – Dai Sijie This remarkable little book, published only ten years ago, is well on its way to being regarded as a modern classic – so much so that it has already found itself on some GCSE English Literature syllabuses. While that might be enough to put you off reading it, I urge you to give it a try – believe me, after the first few pages you will be hooked. Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story of two middle-class city boys, forcibly removed to the Chinese countryside for re-education as part of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty of nothing other than having doctors and dentists for parents, they are subjected to punishingly hard physical work and appalling living conditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautiful Little Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen from a friend, which open up a world beyond the mountains. Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humour throughout – the opening scene, in which the narrator finds himself playing a tune hastily retitled ‘Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao’ sets the tone instantly. But this is also a story about the power of words and the power of desire, and as such is beautifully told. Each character is vividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herself to the grotesque village headman. Comic episodes are interwoven skilfully with passages
exploring the transformative power of literature, and before you know it you have reached the inevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will stay with you for a long time afterwards. Flat Stanley – Jeff Brown Stanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. After an accident with a bulletin board, he is four feet tall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Of course, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’s trip to California in an envelope is great, and his brother Arthur would love to be able to slide under their bedroom door like Stanley does. And, if Stanley was round, he would never have been able to assist his neighbour in catching thieves intent on stealing the world’s most famous painting. But there are downsides too – while it is great to be a kite for half an hour, it’s not so much fun when Arthur gets bored and leaves Stanley stuck in a tree. People can be cruel too, and eventually the name calling gets too much. Luckily, Arthur is on hand with a solution to his brother’s problem… This picture book manages to make an impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter-of-fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud to younger children or as a first book for newly confident readers, it has stood the test of time since its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t already a family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly.
Bee-Master Revisited Bee-Master Revisited is a revised autobiography of George Wakeford, celebrated Sussex Master Beekeeper (Village Tweet contributor John Nash wrote about him in the April 2011 issue, which can be viewed at www.villagetweet.co.uk, click on the Magazines tab). George’s uncanny expertise in the handling of bees and his service to hundreds of novices and clients earned him a
10
reputation as something of a country genius. With his passing in 1985, any chance of him revising his slim autobiography was lost. His book was long out of print and hard to find, even second-hand. Well, now the 122-page book has been reprinted and Billingshurst resident Geoffrey Lawes has added much background detail, enlarging on George’s life story and adding many early 20th century photographs. Bee-Master Revisited is available from Geoffrey Lawes at £11.95. Tel: (01403) 785799

Olympics
Torch Light The history of the Olympic torch
T
he Olympic Games are almost upon us. The Olympic torch arrived in Britain on May 18th and is now travelling all around the country. The route is planned to take in 1,000 towns and villages along the way, and is designed so that 95% of the population will be within ten miles’ travelling distance of at least one stopping point. But what is the story behind the Olympic flame? During the ancient Games in Olympia, Greece, a flame ignited by the sun burned continually on the altar of the goddess Hera. The modern flame first made an appearance in the 1928 Olympics, held in Amsterdam, Holland, where it burned throughout the period of the Games. The tradition of the relay began in 1936 in Berlin and persists until this day. The torch is lit a few months before the start of the games, in Olympia, at the Temple of Hera. An actress, dressed in ceremonial robes uses a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of light from the sun, igniting a flame. This flame is then carried in a fire pot to the ancient Olympic stadium. It is taken to an altar and used to light the first runner’s torch. The design of the torch changes for each Olympics. The 2012 London torch is triangular in shape – the three sides represent the three times Britain has hosted the Olympics: 1908, 1948 and 2012. It is decorated with 8,000 tiny cut-out circles, one for each of the runners who
will carry the torch, and is constructed of a lightweight (but strong) alloy. The route the flame takes varies according to which city is hosting the Olympics. In the past it has been to the top of Mount Everest (Beijing 2008), and even into space (1996 and 2000)! It is carried on foot wherever possible, but inevitably has to travel by other modes of transport, including boat and plane. On planes the fire has to be housed in a special lamp as open flames would not be allowed. As the torch is carried by relay, each runner carries it for only one part of its total journey. They then light the torch of the next runner. On average 110 runners will take part each day, and each runner will run approximately 300 metres. Until the 1950s only men could carry the torch, and it took until 1968 in Mexico City before a woman – Enriqueta Basileo – was allowed to be the final runner. Carrying the torch is considered a great honour. Perhaps surprisingly, most of the runners are not athletes. They are chosen for many reasons, often because they have overcome personal difficulties, or because they are charity workers. The final runner is generally kept a secret until as close to the time of the Games as possible. Previous Olympians mooted as a possible final runner for 2012 include Steve Redgrave, Steve Ovett and Daley Thompson. Tom Hancock

Billingshurst Celebrates the Diamond Jubilee!
A
‘Billingshurst Has Got Talent’ competition took place over two nights and on Saturday 1st June an excited audience flocked to the Billingshurst Community & Conference Centre for the final. The idea of a talent competition emerged following a meeting of the small Parish Council Jubilee Committee. Following their successful meeting with members of the TAG youth group and the members of the Billingshurst Dramatic Society a talent competition was conceived. The project support and co-host at the final was Claire Cutler-Casey. A wealth of talent emerged and following fair comment from a panel of judges, the overall winner chosen was nine-year-old Emily Falkner, a solo singer with a very beautiful voice. A cheque for £174.00 is to be donated to Emily’s chosen charity, Cancer Research UK. On Sunday morning at 11am a well attended service to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee took place at St Mary’s Church. The Big Picnic planned
for Sunday 3rd June at Jubilee Fields, had to be cancelled due to the bad weather. However, at the last minute plans were made to hold a Family Fun afternoon at the Community Centre. Over 300 people enjoyed a variety of activities including riding the very popular ‘surf-board simulator’ and enjoying the large all-ages bouncy castle and basketball shoot-out. Many children joined in the clowning workshops, fancy dress competition, face painting and showing their skill at colouring in crowns and other royal pictures. The very popular Treasure Hunt, Jubilee Quiz and other displays kept families busy while others enjoyed watching the royal Pageant wend its way down the Thames. Everyone enjoyed this opportunity to come together for a community afternoon. The committee would like to thank all who helped prior to the event or on the day and those who supported or sponsored the event, thus enabling it to be free. Scout Hut Saved!
C
hildren from Billingshurst Scouts & Guides units took to the streets of Billingshurst in May in a Show of Thanks to celebrate completion of renovation work on their Scout Hut, whose future was threatened when asbestos was found in the walls and ceilings. Leader and fund-raising coordinator Glyn Pullen said, “Last Spring we held a Show of Strength here to mark the start of our Save Our Hut! campaign [Village Tweet, May 2011] At the time, raising the money looked a daunting prospect. However, we have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the local community. “We were very fortunate in securing grants from Horsham District Council and from the Biffa Award scheme, both of which were crucial in allowing us to undertake the major structural work needed. We have had fantastic support from individuals, businesses and community organisations from
16
Billingshurst and further afield. “In total we have raised over £80,000 which has allowed us to complete the refurbishment and I am delighted to say that after having been closed for over a year, the Scout Hut is now open again and back in daily use – and it is a community facility, not just reserved for Scouts & Guides. “Although we’ve met our original goal, we will be continuing our fundraising to replace our equipment, most of which we lost due to the asbestos problem, and to allow further improvements to the Scout Hut. “On behalf of Billingshurst Scouts & Guides I would like to thank everyone who helped us save our hut – without the help and support of so many people this would not have been possible.” For further information concerning Billingshurst Scouts & Guides and the Save Our Hut! campaign, please contact Paul Starkey, Publicity Officer, on (01403) 786350

Don’t Forget Fido!
I
n the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets! There are several options to ensure your pet is cared for properly – leave them with friends or family, hire a petsitter, or board them. As a change of routine can be very stressful to pets, asking a responsible and familiar family member or friend to care for them may be the best solution. However, if this is not possible, the next best thing might be to employ a pet-sitter who would visit your home to feed, clean and exercise your pet. Be sure to meet your sitter before employing them, ask for references and police checks and make sure they have insurance. If you decide to board your pet, take time to find a kennel, cattery or small animal boarder that will suit your pet. Pay a visit beforehand and check that they are licensed, insured, and that the facilities are secure, clean, dry and draughtfree. Also check that the animals in their care look clean, happy and healthy. Whatever arrangements you decide on, be sure to choose someone responsible and give

Local PTA to represent South of England in National Finals
B
illingshurst Primary School Community Association (BPSCA) has been selected as the regional winner for the South of England and will now proceed through the UK national finals of the PTA-UK Gold Star Awards 2012. “The Gold Star Awards recognise and reward the everyday achievements of PTAs throughout the region,” said Caroline Gaskin, PTA-UK Adviser. “The standard of entries was very high this year and PTA-UK commends all the applications received; to make it through to the national finals as the regional winner for the South of England in the Working with the Local Community category is an amazing feat and we wish the Billingshurst Primary School Community Association the very best of luck as they now go through to the final judging stage”. The BPSCA has built strong community links with local businesses for the school and for the educational benefit of the children. Their link with Kavanagh’s Budgens supports the children’s learning in how we use resources, with the very successful Eco-bag as well as developing children’s skills in food technology and developing a recipe book. They also forged links with Martin Spurrier of Fowlers estate agent, to plant over 60 trees as part of the Jubilee celebrations as well as helping the school to achieve its Forest School status. BPSCA strive hard to bring something different to the school in
addition to all the fundraising events. They arranged for Chinese food tasting donated by China Brasserie 2 for the children in Reception’s Chinese New Year celebrations, as well as the Cookery Club going to local pizza restaurant, Dolce Salato to learn how to make pizzas, design their own, then take it home to eat. The sports teams all have new kits due to the generous sponsorship of Slinfold Golf and Country Club and we are delighted to have the continued support from Coco’s Style and Cracknell PittDraffen estate agent. Helen Williamson, head teacher commented, “These hugely valuable links are not just benefiting the school financially, they are supporting the children’s education, developing a sense of community within the village and ensuring that our children grow up with a sense of belonging within their village – that they make a contribution to their community as well as their community supporting them. We are very proud of our Award Winning PTA.” Billingshurst Primary School Community Association will now join winners from Northern Ireland and Wales plus England (North and Central) at the national finals on the Wednesday 13th June in central London, when the overall category winner will be announced. If successful, the community association will receive a cheque for £1,000 in addition to the £500 they have already won as a regional winner. Bik-Kay Talbot

Community / About the house
Faces of Billingshurst
I
started Faces of Billingshurst back in January 2011 as a personal project to provide an outlet for my interest in photography. The intention was to stretch myself, engage with people and try and improve my technique. To date I’ve interviewed more than 30 people and taken over 200 photographs. I’ve got to know more people in the past 18 months than the previous 8 years. I’m particularly interested in people who are involved with non-profit organisation. It doesn’t have to be an organisation that works in the local community, it could be national or overseas. I’m in awe of people who give up their time to help those less fortunate than themselves. We all lead busy lives and the most precious resource we have is our
time. I know times are tough, the financial crisis has been difficult for everyone but taking time out to help others is something that we can all do. I’ve supported Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for the past four years. They provide medical aid in crisis situations – armed conflicts, epidemics, famines and natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. There are a number of of excellent organisations in the village. Why not take a look at the Billingshurst Community Website and see how you can get involved: www.billingshurst-community.org.uk/local-orgs.php I’m always looking for volunteers. If you think you may be the next ‘Face’, I can be found at www.facesofbillingshurst.com Rob Warde

Garden View
The Great British Tradition
J
uly is the beginning of the school holiday period, and as many people dream of their annual trip, there’s no better place I’d rather be than in a garden. Whether I’m surrounded by the sweet smelling jasmine on a formally planted Italian hillside, or the heady scent of Lavender in southern France, or the gentle aroma of the old English rose, if the sun is shining and I’m sat in a space filled with plants, I’m on holiday. I guess it’s lucky that I have a great garden at home, which makes me feel like that every time I step into it. We’re not going on holiday this year as I’m hoping for a great British summer, (support the nation during the recession and all that), so we’ve decided to holiday at home which I believe is fashionably known as a ‘staycation’. Instead of lining the pockets of our European neighbours, we’re going on a road trip around our country to see how many gardens we can cram into one week. The last time we did this we began our trip in May, in the Highlands of Scotland, where we were just in time for the fabulous array of Rhododendrons and Azaleas. The cool damp gardens provide many scenic walks through the woodland and the smell of the fresh clean air really does cleanse the soul. It’s as if you can smell the earthy growth of spring. After a few months back at home our next trip took us to the beautiful gardens of Devon and Cornwall, where a visit to the fabulous Lost
Gardens of Heligan and the Eden project were combined with more modest privately owned back yards where lots of homemade scones were consumed! We then moved across the country to stay with friends in Kent, ‘The Garden of England’, where we visited a host of National Trust gardens, as well as Sissinghurst (famed for its white garden) and Great Dixter (home of the belated Christopher Lloyd), and finally up to the Cotswolds to see Laurence Johnson’s Hidcote and the much talked about private garden of Prince Charles. Quite a year and quite a trip, a very British summer filled with afternoon tea, cucumber sandwiches and a G&T. Croquet anyone? Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo of Sissinghurst white flowers: Gabrielle Ludlow (flickr)
Jobs to do this month: Dead head flowering shrubs such as roses for continued flowering. Paint the fence and other wooden structures. Raise the height of the blades on the mower so you don’t stress out the grass too much. Take cuttings from Dianthus (Pinks/Carnations). Ensure Camellias and Rhododendrons are fed and watered to ensure great flowers next year.

Lee Bestall – the man behind Garden View
A
fter his Granddad spotted Lee’s green fingers at an early age, he helped foster this love of gardening and at 26, Lee was given the opportunity of a lifetime during early 2005 – the chance to apply to become one of Diarmuid Gavin’s disciples for a new eight part BBC2 TV documentary called Garden School. “Call it gardening, horticulture or landscape design, if I was a stick of Blackpool rock, those are the words I’d have running right through me” was the phrase Lee used in his audition, and it obviously worked, as he spent the next five months living at Wisley, the main garden for the Royal Horticultural Society. “Diarmuid Gavin whizzed us around the country, and Europe, looking at gardens and seeking inspiration, learning plant names and how not to fall into the trap of becoming ‘a factory produced designer’”. In 2006 Lee set up Inspired Gardens… “I would describe my work as ‘softened formality’, as I like order and strong lines in a garden, where balance and symmetry are important, but then I love to soften the whole thing with flexible planting such as grasses and lots of flowers. I particularly like designing

courtyard gardens, but large open spaces where the owner will allow creativity are my ultimate favourite projects.” Over the past few years, Lee’s favourite clients are those who show an interest in the whole scheme but don’t get too involved and who trust him to get on with it. “I’ve never once had anyone who has not loved what we’ve created, and it’s very satisfying to exceed people’s expectations.” Why employ a garden designer? Due to the increase in well designed outdoor spaces, people regularly employ designers to help with their garden overhaul. Garden designers are basically like outdoor architects. They design and project manage and are usually on site for the planting stage as this is the phase where the garden really comes together, it’s the creative cherry on the cake. Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder
M
ay has probably been our busiest month so far this year. It is probably easier to list what we have been up to since the last Village Tweet or I will have to produce my own magazine! We have had five sows give birth totalling some 36 piglets and have three more due at the beginning of July; had the adult sheep sheared/shorn (after all these years I still don’t know which one is correct); hosted a Livestock Oliver in Young Pig Health South-East course on the casualty pig; purchased a beautiful new saddleback boar ‘Farrell’ from Cheshire; sold some pregnant sows to a new breeder in Skegness; hosted two pig courses; and hatched even more Lemon Pyle Brahmas ready for the Smallholder Show at the end of June. We even managed to squeeze our proper jobs into the month as well! We have done rather well at the major shows with our homebred pigs so far and we are still in a
pleasant state of shock: at the Nottingham and Newark show we took both first and second place in the July-born Saddleback gilt (young female) class and at the South of England show we won first and second place with two July gilts who then both went on to take the Champion Saddleback and Reserve Champion titles and Best of Breed award. We also took first place with our January-born gilt who then went on to win the Young Pig of the Year Qualifier of the Year qualifier for a place in the final at Hatfield. However, we are most proud of our son Oliver who qualified for the Young Pig Handler of the Year finals also held at Hatfield. He has worked so hard with his little gilt and it was the perfect end to the three-day show. The West Sussex Smallholders Club will be having their summer social in July on a date to be announced so keep an eye on their website and come along to meet us. f you have been reading any of the Tech sections in the news, it’s likely that you will have read about ‘cookies’. This is due to an EU rule on how they should be used. You may have read they are an evil and intrusive spying mechanism tracking your every move on the net – or a harmless device designed to make your life easier. Firstly cookies are NOT programs. They don’t do anything at all. They are simple ‘text files’. Typically, they contain two pieces of information: a site name and unique user ID. When you visit a site that uses cookies for the first time, a cookie is downloaded onto your PC. The next time you visit that site, your PC checks to see if it has a cookie that is relevant (that is, one containing the site name) and sends the information contained in that cookie back to the site. The site then ‘knows’ that you have been there before, and in some cases, tailors what pops up on screen to take account of that fact. The good thing about cookies… Some cookies are more sophisticated. They record links you click, your preferences or they can store what is in your ‘shopping cart’. The possibilities are endless, and generally the role of cookies is beneficial, making

your interaction with sites smoother. Without cookies, online shopping would be much harder. And the bad… The answer probably depends on how you feel about big business and government storing information about you. There is nothing especially secret or exceptional about the information gathered by cookies, but you may just dislike the idea of your name being added to marketing lists, or your information being used to target you for special offers. In reality, the collection and storage of personal information without permission is not strictly legal in the UK. Sites that make use of cookies get around this in two ways. Firstly, if you read the small print in the Terms and Conditions, you will almost certainly find that by using a site, you are agreeing to download the site’s cookies. Secondly, websites should be telling you their cookie policy prominently on the site. Almost all web browsers nowadays allow you the option to block cookies. Happy Hacking
T
he summer months are a lovely time for horse riders with cool early mornings and long, light evenings. What is better than getting on your horse and going for a lovely long hack? Unfortunately in this modern age many riders have to ride on some roads to access bridleways and other safe hacking routes. There have been reports in the press about road accidents involving horses very recently and riders must do all they can to stay safe and be seen while riding on the road. The Britsh Horse Society estimates there are 3,000 road accidents per year involving equestrians. Drivers too must be patient and take care around horses. Invest in hi-vis, the very least riders should be wearing is a bright tabard, preferably with reflective strips. These can be bought at any equestrian shop. If pennies are tight there are bargains to be had in workwear shops that cater for construction workers! Hi-viz gives drivers on average an extra three seconds to see you, which can make a huge difference to stopping distances and give them more time to slow down and pass you safely. Three seconds is all it takes for a car travelling at 30mph to travel the length of a full-size dressage arena! There used to be a great deal of prejudice towards riders who wear hi-viz, with fellow riders saying it was ‘uncool’. Personally I would rather look unfashionable and give drivers a chance to see me rather than risk not being seen and my horse or myself being injured. There are also some brilliant items on the market for the horse to wear. I always ride mine out in his hi-viz reflective sheet and I do believe it makes a difference. Hi-viz also plays a part in off-road hacking making it easier to for rescue teams to locate you if you should be unfortunate enough to have a fall. Think about taking the BHS Riding and Road Safety Test. Designed to train riders to be competent and safe when riding on the road, this test is endorsed by the department of transport and can be taken at equestrian centres all over the country. Please be polite and courteous to other road users. There is nothing worse from a driver’s point of view than a horse rider who fails to acknowledge them when they have slowed down and passed wide; if you can’t take your hands off the reins a smile and a nod is still very much appreciated and helps driver/rider relations. If a driver does try to intimidate you or is
38
aggressive or dangerous please, please report it to the police and the fill in a British Horse Society incident report form that can be found on their website. Keep vigilant when riding on roads, maintain an even rein contact and keep an eye out for anything that may spook your horse so you can be prepared to take avoiding action; this is where schooling plays a very important role. To be able to shoulder in past a scary object is a godsend! Likewise if your horse is ridden between hand and leg then he should be listening to his rider rather than looking for objects to spook at! Expect the unexpected: birds flying out of hedges, flags on cars, barking dogs running up to gates or fences, motorcycles and the silent cyclists are all part and parcel of hacking. If you have a young, inexperienced or nervous horse it always pays to go out with a steady schoolmaster to get the other animal used to the sights and sounds outside of the yard and to gain confidence in himself and his rider. Carry a mobile phone for emergencies but never slop along chatting away on it while hacking. If you see lots of traffic building up behind you please stop and let it past when it is safe to do so. Drivers. Please pass horses slow and wide and be prepared to stop if needed. Never sound your horn or rev your engine when passing horses. Remember lots of horse riders are children and teenagers. There is room for EVERYONE on the roads and EVERYONE has a right to be there whether they are a horse rider, cyclist, motorist or pedestrian. If a rider is having a problem they may not necessarily be able to say thank you when you slow down but I can assure you they will be very grateful. Cyclists. Please call out to horse riders as you approach, that way the horse knows you are there and will be less inclined to spook at you as you ry pass. le d Happy hacking, with some care and d y, sa ha consideration we can all help each other , k ly ge stay safe on the roads this summer. ac pp illa t e , u Jeanette Douglas. House of Commons Lunch Honour for local Montessori School
T
wo West Sussex businesswomen enjoyed lunch at the House of Commons recently with the School’s Minister Nick Gibbs, and the MP for Crawley, Henry Smith (Cons). Patricia West and Yvonne Bradley (pictured), the two owners of Bobtails Montessori, a nursery school based near Billingshurst, were invited to the lunch as part of independent school Handcross Park’s 125th year celebrations. “We were honoured to be invited to such an eminent event especially as we met with other independent schools and had the opportunity to talk with the Schools Minister as well”, said Montessori Principal Patricia West.
The day was organised by the Brighton College Family Group and hosted by Handcross Headmaster Graeme Owton. Bobtails’ School Principal Yvonne Bradley said, “We spoke with Mr Gibbs who was very enthusiastic about the contribution to education from the independent sector, and schools such as Bobtails, and encourage us to keep up the good work. “It was a fantastic occasion and we feel very privileged, as owners of a small Montessori school, to have experienced the atmosphere and grandeur of the House of Commons and enjoy a really special meal in the Churchill Room”, added Mrs West. Billingshurst Runner raises £1,000 for Canine Partners
C
allum Aitken (32) from Billingshurst has recently raised £1,000 for Canine Partners, a charity that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities. Callum completed the Brighton Marathon in May in a time of 5 hours, 2 minutes. Callum chose to raise funds for Canine Partners due to the Charity being based locally and the impressive work it does in training dogs to change the lives of people with disabilities. This was Callum’s first marathon and he trained hard to complete it non-stop, in a good time. Callum commented, “I really enjoyed taking part in the Brighton Marathon and am glad I could raise funds for such a worthy cause. We recently saw a Canine Partners demonstration team in action and were blown away by the tasks they could do such as getting money from a cashpoint.” The funds raised will help Canine Partners to continue training assistance dogs for people such as Jessica Loseby from West Sussex. Jess
suffered a spinal injury as a result of a car accident and was the fortunate recipient of Ayisha (Ash) in 2008. “Ash has fundamentally changed my life and that of my family. My body has continued on its path of mutiny. I have lost the use of my wrists, am in chronic pain and am now in an electric chair and cannot drive. However, I remain happy, healthy and whole because of a dog that quite frankly looks like a rug on legs! She helps me dress and undress, I am back to supermum but now with the wonder-dog who helps me with everything from the school run to the shopping.” Canine Partners is always looking for local volunteers and fundraisers. For further information please call 08456 580480 or visit www.caninepartners.org.uk. Photo: Callum and Susan Aitken, Brighton Marathon

Volunteers honoured at Wey & Arun Canal Trust AGM
T
ime and effort put in by two volunteers working on the restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal over the last year was singled out for praise at the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s (WACT) AGM at Pulborough at the end of April. In front of a large audience of WACT members, head of the maintenance depot John Smith was presented with the Jack King Cup, while the John East Cup was presented to membership secretary David King. After being a member of the Trust for a number of years, ex-REME fitter John volunteered to help with the maintenance of equipment at the Tickner Heath depot in January 2009. “When I retired at the end of 2008 I was looking for something to do and saw that the Trust was looking for help with maintenance and put myself forward to help,” says John. John’s role soon extended well beyond helping out and he has built the maintenance team from two – including himself – to a five-strong group that supplies serviceable equipment to the Trust’s numerous working parties and also assists with
equipment for special events. Long-term Trust member, canal enthusiast David took on the role of membership secretary in 2004. David, with strong support from wife Maggie, carries out essential membership services for the Trust, as well as organising distribution of the organisation’s quarterly magazine. When David first joined the Trust he was involved with the Sunday working party and undertook work on Brewhurst Lock in Loxwood. After retiring from the IT sector in 2002, he volunteered to promote the restoration work through giving talks to various groups such as the Women’s Institute, Rotary Clubs and historical societies before taking on the role of membership secretary. David and Maggie also help crew boat trips and with the running of the new Canal Centre in Loxwood. For further information about the Wey & Arun Canal, please visit www.weyandarun.co.uk. Maintaining the right to navigate on the River Arun
T
he Queen’s Diamond Jubilee river pageant may have featured over 1,000 boats but it was not the only flotilla to have set sail recently. The number of boats involved in the annual boat rally from Pulborough to Pallingham may have been fewer in number but it was a key event in the aim to restore the Wey & Arun Canal. Ten boats, crewed by 16 people and one dog, launched on the River Arun from Pulborough in a bid to reach Pallingham Quay (at the start of the Wey & Arun Canal) and preserve the right for future navigation. “The aim of this annual event held in May each year is to ensure that when restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal is completed, there will be no legal holdups in enabling the boats to use the River Arun,”
42
says organiser John Taylor-Cram. Work started on restoring the Wey & Arun Canal in the 1970s and the annual event organised by John will play an important role in proving that navigation rights have been used. Organisation of the cruise to the head of the River Arun used to be undertaken by the Solent and Arun Branch of the Inland Waterways Association but The Wey & Arun Canal Trust has agreed to take on the coordination of this traditional boat rally. “The event was timed to make the best of the tides, but we still had enough time to stop off at the White Hart at Stopham Bridge for some well-earned refreshments” John commented. Major National Award for Barns Green Half Marathon
T
he Barns Green Half Marathon has won a major national award as the ‘Most Improved Event’ in the UK. The Award was presented at the Runners World Personal Best Awards 2012 at a glamorous ceremony in London on 19th April. What makes these awards so significant is that each is decided by the people who really matter – Britain’s runners themselves. There are two race category awards and the winners are worked out by averaging feedback ratings posted on the Runners World website after runners had completed the events. The ‘Most Improved Event’ category is for the race that scored the biggest improvement in its ratings, compared to its last running, on the Runners World website in the 12 months from March 2011 to March 2012. Commenting on the award, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “This is a huge honour. We always knew that we generally get excellent feedback on various websites from our runners but to actually emerge
as the most improved race in the UK is quite some accolade. It is particularly rewarding given the huge number of races that now take place in this country, most of which receive substantial financial help and other support from major councils and local authorities. Our race is organised and made possible by a large number of volunteers who have all done a wonderful job in making the event the great success that it is”. Entries are open for the 2012 Barns Green Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday 30th September. An exciting new innovation for this year will be that the magnificent marching band from Christ’s Hospital School will be playing as the runners go through the school grounds after about three miles of the race. Another new initiative is the introduction of a Barns Green Junior/Fun Run Race for younger runners. For further details on how to take part in the race just visit www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk Nigel Currie 07774 229305
