Bailey’s Ice Cream One for the grown-ups!

METHOD

1. Pour the milk into a medium size, heavy bottomed saucepan. Add 100g of the sugar. Place over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture registers 77°C on a cooking thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer the milk should be just bearable to dip your finger into… be careful! 2. In a crock or stainless steel medium-size bowl, whisk together the 4 egg yolks and remaining 50g of sugar until foamy and slightly thick. Very slowly add half of the hot milk to the eggs, whisking continuously. Pour this egg mixture back into the sauce pan with the remaining hot milk and return to the stove top on a low-medium heat. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon or heatproof rubber spatula until the mixture reaches 85°C on the thermometer or if you have no thermometer is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon or spatula. Take care to make sure the mixture does not boil. Remove from the heat. If it’s not completely smooth whisk it well before proceeding. 3. Pour the double cream into a clean, large stainless-steel or glass mixing bowl set over an ice bath. Pour the heated custard mixture through a fine mesh sieve or strainer into the cold cream. Add the vanilla extract and stir until fully incorporated. Stir occasionally until the mixture has fully cooled. This should take about half an hour. Remove the mixing bowl from the ice bath, dry off the bottom of the bowl if necessary, cover with plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours or overnight. Stir in the Baileys. Pour this chilled mixture into the ice-cream maker follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Serves 6-8. Preparation time: 5 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes. Chilling time: overnight plus freezing time (30 mins-3 hours depending on method used)

INGREDIENTS 480ml whole milk 150g granulated sugar 4 large egg yolks 240ml double cream 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 4 tbsp Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur 4. If you have no ice cream maker, don’t worry, you can still make ice cream though it will take a little longer. Pour the chilled mixture into a large container. Pop it in the fast-freeze section of your freezer. Check it after 45 minutes. It will have begun to crystallize around the edges. Use a hand whisk, wooden spoon or electric hand whisk to break the crystals up and incorporate them into the mixture, then refreeze. Keep checking and beating the mixture every 30-40 minutes and within 3 hours you will have ice cream. NB. Alcohol lowers the freezing temperature of ice cream so this ice cream will be quite soft. Don’t be tempted to add more Bailey’s otherwise it might never set!

Tesco sets fruity challenge for Billingshurst Primary School

oca schools were invited to enter the Fruity Challenge Competition to raise awareness and funds for Diabetes UK, Tesco’s National Charity Partner. The winner of the competition were the Groovy Smoothie Team from Billingshurst Primary School. The team of Year 5 children came up with a design, name, poster and packaging to promote their product and sold it in the store. The Groovy Smoothie consisted of orange juice, pineapple and mangoes which was very popular amongst the shoppers who stopped to taste the children’s creation. The tasters also donated generously to raise £256.48. The proceeds of the sales will go towards the £10 million fundraising target. “The children have had a fantastic time with this Apprentice-style challenge and we are

Support them… PLEASE! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

was spending a pleasant few minutes the other day in my local village shop, chatting away to a fellow villager, and our joint discussion veered onto the way we purchased our provisions in the days of our youth… Now, I am pleased to say that this shop has a tradition that lends itself to such chatter, in that it has not acquired the modern technique of ‘speed selling’. No instant purchase of goods here, no barcodes and pre-packed items. Oh, no. Here there is time to chat, to select and gossip, to ask for and receive amounts that are suitable to your personal requirements. If they haven’t got what you require then they will endeavour to get it. However, if you’re in a hurry, don’t come in! In fact I have on many an occasion threatened to bring my deckchair when there has been a small queue developed at the deli counter. In other words it’s how shopping should be, pleasant and friendly with the added bonus of being served by someone who knows how to smile and even knows your name. So, anyway, we had the time to delve into those days long gone when our shopping needs were met with a range of goods that were sold in a far more ‘organic’ way. Cheese cut from the block, butter patted and marked with wooden paddles, dried fruits loose from the sack, whole sides of beef hanging from the rails at the back of the sawdust floored butcher’s shop. You know the sort of thing that I mean. They were visions from our childhood. Sweets sold loose by the ounce (once they were off ration!) so they stuck together in the bag along with various assorted bits of fluff. Separate counters around the larger Co-op size shops with overhead cables carrying the cash and change to the cashier in her little foyer. How many of you remember your Co-op number? Quite a few I wager. All this got me thinking on how sad it is that villages and towns have lost so many of their small retail outlets over the last 50 years or so. The little shops that sold such a varied range of

goods and the characters that often stood behind the counters dispensing them. I realise that before the advent of the common household fridge, most households would shop on a daily basis as a lot of the goods would not stand the summer heat without adapting a warning aroma of ‘don’t touch’. That said though, mould on the edge of cheese would just be scrapped off, stale bread would turn into bread pudding and a quick taste or delicate sniff of a suspicious sample would replace the modern ‘use by’ date. Even eggs would nestle in a bowl of ‘water glass’ to ensure their freshness. Homemade jams and pickles would take care of summer surplus and smoking or salting meats and fish kept those items fit to eat for some considerable period. Nowadays we consider ourselves lucky if our village has a shop and a pub and I’m sure our children/grandchildren get fed up as we continually point out buildings with, “That was a pub/shop/post office when I was your age”. I know that it is ‘progress’, and that the ability to purchase nearly all our requirements from just a couple of retailers has made life simpler. But at what cost? The loss of these venues for some villages is a disaster really, as they act as a hub for the residents, a listening post and place of news and gossip. Somewhere that the health and welfare of the less fortunate could be checked on and solutions could be decided on what practical help was needed. Thankfully some have set up their own community shops and all credit to them for the foresight and effort that they have made for the future of their area. Without these places a village will die. No matter how pretty or how many houses spring up for newcomers, they are the glue that cements the lives of the villagers together. So, as I climb down from this particular hobby horse, I ask you to please support your local outlets. You’ll get to know so many lovely folk and what’s more you will be donating what these places need so much… your time. Relay for Life raises £24,000 Christ’s Hospital School, 1st-2nd June

he Christ’s Hospital Relay For Life, announced in May’s Village Tweet, raised over a staggering £24,000 for Cancer Research UK at their recent 24hour walking fundraiser. 18 teams joined together on 1st & 2nd of June, featuring kids and adults of all ages in a joyous event that celebrated life, remembered those lost to cancer and saw survivors fight back. Held at the fabulous grounds of Christ’s Hospital School the weekend kicked off at 12 noon with an opening ceremony which saw Chair Tracy White invite 32-year-old cancer survivor Laura Tully to join her on stage. Recently married, Laura was determined to attend the event despite having had a mastectomy only ten days previously and having endured six months of harsh chemotherapy – Laura wanted to walk the survivor’s lap of honour with her father-in-law Steve, and be joined on the carer’s lap by her husband and two young children Chelsey and Toby. Laura still has to have further treatment but says that next year she plans be there walking with her team for the entire 24 hours. Shortly before the walking began, around 30 survivors made an emotional gesture of thanks when they each released a dove before starting the Relay by walking a lap of honour. Teams then followed, dressed as characters from children’s fiction and so the Relay began. Team members took it in turns to walk around the track at Christ’s Hospital over a period of 24 hours spurred on by visitors and a host of entertainment to keep them motivated. Peach Entertainments very kindly stepped in as firstclass hosts with a main stage heaving with music including jazz from Gary Holder and Aprile Biggs before giving way to bands such as Gatling Camel, Rebecca Lauren and a live acoustic set by Brent Yeomans. Talent competitions

and choirs also kept the walkers and visitors on their feet and having a good time. Hunger was kept at bay and refreshments flowing with a sumptuous hog roast and breakfast rolls at 4a.m. provided by the stalwarts at 1st Shipley Scouts and St. John’s Ambulance were helpfully on hand for the duration. Traditional family fun was aplenty with touch rugby, flag football, maypole dancing and circus skills challenges. Stalls were also in abundance with each team setting up a themed stand: Hogwarts School gave children a ticket to ‘join’ the Hogwarts express, make a wand and brush up on their spell skills. Team Wonkas Nerds brought a world of imagination with their sweetie tent factory and team Seaside Shiners were supported by wonderful weather for their stall of old fashioned seaside games. As dusk began to fall special candle bags were decorated with memories and messages to honour those who have been touched by cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Candle of Hope Ceremony. Candles were lit inside the bags (see photo) in a poignant celebration of loved ones and then lined the track prior to a silent lap of remembrance which took place by all those in attendance – a touching time that truly highlighted the importance of defeating Cancer. At the closing ceremony delighted committee Chair Tracy White announced that in excess of £24,000 had been raised and went on to thank all involved, “especially our VIP survivors, our teams, our volunteers and all the performers, who gave up their time to support us”. A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Delete This At Your Peril – Neil Forsyth You know those spam emails you receive on a daily basis? What do you do with them? Click and delete? Wonder idly if there really is a longlost relative somewhere who has left you his entire fortune? Swear at the screen? Most likely a combination of all three. Well, here is another answer. Reply. Forsyth’s ‘hero’, Bob Servant, does just that. Every email is read carefully and replied to just as carefully. The ensuing correspondence is detailed in this book, and it is laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end. Each of the initial scenarios will be familiar to anyone who has ever noticed the spam piling up in their mailbox. The first is from ‘His Royal Highnest [sic]. Jack Thompson’, who offers Bob 20% of a $75m fortune. Bob manages to haggle upwards, eventually requesting four live lions, preferably ones that can talk, as his share of the profits. This is followed by a long saga involving a kidnapped postman; more than one ‘relationship’ with nubile Russians; a misunderstanding which sees Bob flying to Dhaka, Bangladesh rather than Dakar, Senegal and a long-distance relationship between Bob’s female alter-ego Bobby, and Benjamin, who is desperate to see a photograph of his conquest. The exchanges become more and more ridiculous the longer they continue, as Forsyth changes Bob’s stories and demands while drawing the correspondents on in the hope of eventual financial gain. Bob’s own history is

gradually pieced together too, with footnotes to confirm that he is of course, a compulsive liar. The book can be read all at once, or dipped into. Some of the language is not for the faint-hearted, but it will make you laugh. And it will possibly make you look at those emails a little differently... Just Imagine – Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt This is the new book from the author and illustrator behind the perennial favourite You Choose – so popular in some houses that occasionally parents resort to hiding it in the hope of a night off. Just Imagine does exactly what it says in the title – offers children a chance to use their imagination to develop their own stories, dreams and possibilities. Each page is richly illustrated with a series of possibilities – being very BIG or very small for example. Children can read the text and then decide from the pictures what they would like to be – and what they would not! They can go back in time, be magical, live underground, in the air, or even under the sea. At the end, they can choose their dreams for that night. This is a book that promotes talk and play as well as imagination. Readers can role play the different scenarios, pretending to be a wild animal or a pet, or choosing and trying out their favourite vehicle. There are hundreds of ‘What if...’ questions that could be asked, and older children can use the book as a starting point for their own story writing. Destined to be a classic as quickly as its predecessor, this is one for kids of all ages.

Volunteers honoured at Wey & Arun Canal Trust AGM

ime and effort put in by two volunteers working on the restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal over the last year was singled out for praise at the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s (WACT) AGM at Shalford Village Hall on Saturday 27th April. Without the volunteer workforce, restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal would not be moving forward at its current rate but the Trustees believe that two individuals have shown great commitment in recent years. In front of a large audience of WACT members Eddie Fairman was presented with the Jack King Cup*, while the John East Cup* was presented to Geoff Thomas. “Both Eddie and Geoff are very deserving winners of these awards and their efforts, particularly over the last 12 months, have significantly helped us in our drive to restore the canal,” said WACT chairman Sally Schupke. “Eddie played a key role in the bricklaying work

at Southland lock – and Loxwood lock before that – and we have benefited greatly from his skills as a master craftsman. “Geoff has been a staunch supporter of the TSG working party for many years and he has stepped in to help with the production of the Trust’s WeySouth magazine by taking responsibility for the layout and design. When Love Goes Wrong…

nd they all lived happily ever after…” We are all familiar with the fairytale ending; the handsome prince and his beautiful bride sail off into the sunset to enjoy a rosy future together. In the real world though, it isn’t always quite that simple. Marriage often brings difficulties, and sadly around half of UK marriages now end in divorce. So, in the absence of a fairy godmother waving her magic wand, where can we turn for help if it all starts to go wrong? In the past, marriage counselling has been regarded as a last resort to save a sinking ship and has had something of a stigma attached to it. In today’s world though, many couples have discovered that help from a third party, especially if sought early on, can help them resolve many issues that could threaten the health of their relationship. Counselling isn’t just about dealing with major problems like infidelity either. It can help with a whole range of issues, such as the effects of unemployment, illness, stress, children and financial worries can have on a marriage. If, despite all attempts at reconciliation, a couple decides to separate or divorce, it is likely to be a time of anguish and distress. As well as dealing with the emotional upset, there may also be financial implications, housing issues and childcare practicalities to sort out. Whether joint owner or not, married or not, an

individual may still have a financial interest in the property they shared with their ex-partner, and they should register this interest with the land registry. A newly single person may also be eligible for new or additional benefits, so should inform Jobcentre Plus about any changes in their circumstances. The bank needs to be informed and joint mandates cancelled to avoid the possibility of funds being cleared, and in some cases the account may need to be frozen. Whether there is a will in place or not, it is essential that this is reviewed to ensure that the correct people are listed as beneficiaries. Before starting divorce proceedings, a couple is required by law to attend a Meeting for Information and Assessment (or MIAM) with a mediator. Although under no obligation to continue with mediation services, a mediator is trained to deal with all matters relating to divorce and can help couples come to their own settlement with the least amount of antagonism or hostility and without the need for court intervention. The alternative is for a couple to settle entirely on their own, or with the help of a solicitor. Canal photographic competition winners revealed

n image of a Mallard duck taking off from the water on the Wey & Arun Canal has helped secure Amanda Mariner first place in a photographic competition organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT). The competition, announced in February’s Village Tweet, with the theme of ‘Life on the Wey and Arun Canal’ attracted more than 150 entries giving judges Malcolm Roberts of Castle Studios, Guildford, and WACT member Peter Flatter a difficult task in selecting a winner. Limeburners Summer Music Festival – 20th July

Just 17 years old, Ben’s sound has been compared to the likes of Ed Sheeran, John Mayer and Alex Turner. He has just launched his debut EP, Again & Again. Plaistow Guides’ Plea for a New Leader

he thriving Guide Unit at Plaistow will close, if a new Adult Leader cannot be found. Teri Maher has been a Leader with Girlguiding for over 24 years and has been running Plaistow Guides since 2001. She feels it is time for someone younger to take over but, unfortunately, this is proving to be a real challenge. Emma, aged 13, a Guide in the Unit, said, “I really look forward to spending Wednesday evening at Guides. It’s a chance to have fun, learn new things and make new friends. It would be really sad if Guides had to stop after camp.” Plaistow Guides celebrated their 50th birthday last September. They first started in 1926 but had to close at the end of 1946, due to a lack of Leaders. The Unit re-opened in 1962 and has been running successfully since then. They have 22 Guides in the Unit at present and have a long waiting list of girls who wish to join them when they are 10 years old. The only other local unit in Billingshurst is full, so if Plaistow Guides were to close there would be nowhere for Guides to go.

Local District Commissioner Emma Rittmeyer said, “Volunteering with Girlguiding is more than just giving something to your local community. It is a chance to develop skills, meet new people and try something new. It is really rewarding to watch the girls grow, gain confidence and fulfil their potential. Girlguiding offers support, specialised training and all new Leaders have their own mentor to help them through their initial training.” The Guides’ programme of activities for this term includes a science evening, outdoor cooking, sugar craft skills, swimming, rounders and ready-steadycook. The girls will be joining nearly 2,000 Scouts and Guides from around the world this summer at the County’s International Camp, WS2013. All in a morning’s work Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

anny sighed. She hadn’t had a great morning. She’d got up a bit late herself, then as she’d made the kids’ lunches Mary had a meltdown because she couldn’t find her shoes (which, unsurprisingly, were where she had left them yesterday – in the playroom); then Sam had flipped the pizza he wanted for lunch instead of turning it around in the oven to cook both sides properly and she had had to flip it back and clean the bottom of the oven; then she had forgotten to wake Sara up and everyone had had to wait for 15 minutes while she made herself beautiful before leaving for school and then, to top it all off, Izzie had gone to school and forgotten to feed Wolfie and Chocolate Buttons the guinea pigs (who, before you ask, are now ‘inside’ most of the time). At last Nanny could sit down for a minute (after feeding the guinea pigs of course) for a quick cup of coffee and bend her mind to the latest worry. Well, two worries really and they both involved Magnus the Chihuahua. Izzie had gone on and on about getting another dog, and had accompanied Nanny on the dog walk every morning so faithfully, that Mummy had given in and said “Yes”. And so Brody came to the little farm. A year-old Paperanian (Pomeranian and Papillon cross), he was full of energy and fun. He also expected everyone else to have as much energy as him. He loved being with Magnus. He ran after him and with him, and was chased by him. He took his favourite toys and chew bars, he jumped on him, he wrestled with him. He wore Magnus out. When Brody was not around, all Magnus wanted to do was sleep he was so tired. Nanny wondered whether Magnus wasn’t a little depressed. So she decided that she and Grandad would give him extra cuddles and would try and stop Brody being too zealous in games, and see if that made a difference. The other worry was an ongoing one, and it was much more serious. It had come about down at the caravan. Nanny had taken Magnus with Zac the German Shepherd and his mum to the beach. At first it was fun. Magnus of course went up to every dog and said hello to them and then came back. But suddenly something must have caught his attention. He strode off as purposefully as his little short legs could carry him. Up the beach he marched, and over onto the marine walk area

out of sight, followed by a steaming Nanny walking as fast as her legs could carry her. But she couldn’t see Magnus or his fluffy little tail. But what she could see was a line of people along the walk standing like meerkats and looking away into the distance. “A Chihuahua?” Nanny asked, and one by one they nodded and pointed in the direction he had gone. She ran along the marine walk almost back to the car. Finally she saw him and called him. Although he was very busy meeting and greeting, he listened to her and came trotting back, very unconcerned and with a smile on his face as if to say, “What kept you?” Nanny was not impressed. That was it. Despite a couple of extra ‘recall’ lessons, Magnus still was doing his escape act, if they were out. At home he was the model of obedience and certainly was teaching Brody how to be a well behaved and obedient dog. But away from home it was a different story. As she sat with her coffee, Nanny made a decision. She would get a special ‘spray’ collar for Magnus. Having set her world to rights, Nanny finished tidying the kitchen and got on with her other tasks on that little farm near Billingshurst. Starting the young horse

here is nothing more rewarding than starting and riding a young horse. It is often a dream for many riders to produce their own youngster from the backing stage to riding at its first competition. As well as being rewarding it is often hard work with much sweat and some tears along the way. Young horses vary enormously in temperament and it is vital to assess this and never push the horse beyond his boundaries. Some will learn incredibly quickly and soak up the experience while others can become worried by what is going on around them and need to take things much more slowly. If you have never had experience with young horses it is vital you seek the advice and support of a good trainer or instructor before embarking on your training; you will need support on the ground once it comes to the backing stage. Some people prefer to send a youngster away to be backed. If this is the route you want to pursue make sure you get recommendations for a good trainer as it is very difficult to undo a bad experience for the horse. Before we even consider backing the horse we must get him used to the voice aids and he must be well mannered and controllable on the ground. Lunging and long reining plays a huge part in the training of the horse. You don’t even need a school, a quiet corner of a level paddock will suffice. While handling the horse on a daily basis it is vital to get him to stand, walk on and move backwards and over to the side on command. Mouthing the horse is very important, make sure the horse is comfortable in his mouth and have his teeth looked at and checked for any sharp edges or wolf teeth before introducing the bit. Start the bitting process by letting the horse wear his bridle for short periods of time under supervision; most horses who have been shown in hand as youngsters will be used to a bit and bridle. Make the experience nice and fuss free for the horse and be especially gentle when removing the bridle, being careful not to bash his teeth with the bit. There are hundreds of bits out there and the choice very baffling but most horses are started in a simple snaffle.

Equine Lunging can best be started by having an assistant guide the horse around the circle, again if you are not sure get help from a good instructor. The voice is incredibly important when lunging; make sure you are consistent with your commands so as not to confuse the horse. Use an encouraging tone when asking for an upward transition and a lower calming tone when asking for a downward transition or a halt. Long reining is a fantastic way of allowing a horse to learn to go forwards and accept the contact of the bit. It can be done in the school or out on walks; if you are going on the road please have a helper at the horse’s head and wear hi-vis. When the horse is deemed ready to back, that is he understands the instructions given to him on the lunge and can walk, trot and canter and halt on command in a consistent manner, and has maybe spent some time being long reined in his tack, we can think about getting a rider on board. If the horse is particularly sensitive or sharp it may well be best to pay a professional to do the job. If you are keen to back the horse yourself enlist the help of a quiet and competent handler to be on the ground. You will need to be a calm and confident rider to give the horse confidence and reassure him. I like to spend a little time just standing on a mounting block with the horse next to it for the days leading up to backing so the horse gets used to someone being above his back.The first step is to lean over the horse quietly, it doesn’t matter how long this takes; some horses take longer than others but the most important thing is not to rush them – the last thing you want is a mistake at this stage. Once they are happy with this the next stage is to pop your leg over and quietly sit up. All going well, make a big fuss of the horse. Street Pastors Commissioned in Billingshurst

espite the heavy rain on 24th May, nothing could dampen the excitement and enthusiasm of those attending the Commissioning Service held in Trinity United Reformed Church for the first group of trained Street Pastors for the village of Billingshurst. Representatives from West Sussex County Council, Horsham District Council, Billingshurst Parish Council, Sussex Police and local clergy, together with Billingshurst residents, all lent their support. Billingshurst Street Pastors have been undertaking a comprehensive training programme for the last six months, benefiting from interaction with and training from, among others, BEAT Responders Heartstart, HDC Youth Support Team, NHS Sussex Partnership and with generous help from Sussex Police (as reported in Village Tweet, November 2012). The first team of volunteers, all drawn from local churches, were commissioned by Anwar and Hannah Bourazza, representatives from the Ascension Trust (the umbrella organisation responsible for Street Pastors which, since its

formation ten years ago, has trained over 11,000 people for this important voluntary work). After the service the Street Pastors undertook their first patrol in the village and were well received by all those whom they met â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in local businesses, pubs, restaurants, etc, as well as on the streets. Billingshurst Street Pastors aim to provide a friendly and helpful presence at various times of the day and evening throughout the village. They will listen to everyone, young and old and provide help to any who need it, without prejudice. Contact with the community may range from a friendly chat to pointing people to an appropriate agency should they have a specific need. As Street Pastors become a familiar sight on the streets we anticipate that more local Christians will decide to get involved. aika is a gregarious dog who likes nothing better than to investigate/befriend others of her species. She wants to socialise and play, sometimes to the consternation of some owners who see a boisterous GSD bounding towards their beloved pooch! She is respectful towards more elderly dogs whose laboured pace leave them adrift of their owners as they field walk together – witness Monty, a benign greymuzzled black Labrador who she meets in Daux Wood. Contrast this with the high energy frolics with Spud, the plucky, resilient, Staffordshire Bull-terrier and Bo the young Hungarian Vizsla whose speed and agility leaves Laika positively becalmed for hours on end when we get home! Earlier playmates included Bobby, the black lab who first introduced Laika to the joys of ball fetching and Yogi, a large brindled Akita-cross whose size and thunderous gallop might dismay many dogs and their owners! But of all her friends, Henry, the Standard Poodle is probably her favourite. Despite appearing rather aloof with the air of kindly bewhiskered Victorian

patriarch, he is tolerant of her unrestrained affection having been known to her from the start of her life with us. Once a week, the pair, often accompanied by a couple of labradoodles, are chaperoned into the countryside by a good friend where they enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of West Sussex. Now Laika has met many other dogs on her travels and so far hasn’t encountered a Max, Buddy, Bailey or a Rocky (Top four male dog names apparently). Similarly, she has yet to meet a Molly, Maggie, Daisy or Sadie (Top four most popular female dog names). Instead she has chanced upon a Dennis the German Shepherd (her doppelganger) in the Daux Wood fields, Simon the Bull Terrier in Jubilee fields, Roger the Pointer at a dog training class, Muriel the Mastiff at Littlehampton, Bernard the Boxer on Brighton sea front and Andrea the Airedale near Amberley Wildbrooks. As Shakespeare wrote, “What’s in a name?” Thank goodness she hasn’t met a Satan, Sabre, Tyson or Brutus! Ron Myal

Lee takes a break

s I take a break from the heat of the midday sun perched under the shade of a Banyan tree, I am staggered by its beauty and the clever way it has adapted to colonising and ‘getting around’. The large structures which develop from the underside of the 20-foot-high branches head south and take root into the dry dusty soil as they hit the ground. With a record high temperature of 100°F and only 30 inches of water per year these are pretty hostile conditions. Yes, you may have noticed, I am not in the UK! An eleven-hour flight will transport you to Key West, Florida where the views are simply breathtaking and although some locals claim you can almost see Cuba (90 miles out to sea) I found some of the best views had no distance at all. For me the most stunning were the small, intimate courtyards created to the front and rear sides of the colonial houses. These beautiful little oases in the town provide not only a welcoming entrance, but also a cool shady place, where the several layers of plants seem at home. Although none of them are indigenous to the area (due to the lack of soil on the island) they grow happily together and have done for years – mainly thanks to the daily irrigation! The plants are there for one reason only, to provide much needed shade from the sun. The plant life is diverse due to this being the only frost-free place in the USA and to me, looks like a scene from my local garden centre’s houseplant department. Ficus trees and coconut palms provide shade for less sun-loving

ferns. All tropical and all enjoying the high humidity (so that’s why the tips of my parlour palm always go brown! As I sit in the garden located at the rear of the oldest house on the island a small lizard drinks from what's left of a puddle, created by the irrigation system of course. Jamaican-style music plays in the background, its origin a local bar I presume, disturbed only by the intermittent and even louder ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ thanks to the resident cockerel. Set free many years ago as a result of illegal cock fighting, these chirpy chaps roam free here, having found it easy to become native – and I can see why. Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Phase Two

ur Diamond Jubilee Garden in the centre of the village has recently grown a new seating area, another raised bed and a very child friendly play area for young children. This has completed Phase 2 of our development for this once overgrown, neglected area of land that was used as a bottle dump and a general area that attracted rubbish. To attract the young families with their children to this area, we have constructed a log circle made from oak logs very kindly donated by James Mustill. This is in addition to a network of low balance beams for the children to walk along and play among (see second photo). This whole area, as well as the area around our fantastic totem pole, has now been covered in bark to make this place a very child friendly, safe area. The Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative themselves have raised a substantial amount of the monies needed for this project by running Quizes, having open gardens, a barbecue and Talks in the winter months. However, we would also like to thank a number of organisations and individuals who have supported us in many different ways: West Sussex County Council as well as Billingshurst Lions have provided some of the funds to purchase a magnificent, teak bench which is now situated on a terraced area which has another raised bed to the side.

We have provided some raised beds for growing herbs, salad crops, i.e. lettuce, beetroot, radish and spring onions, as well as some smaller vegetables, such as carrots, courgettes and cucumbers. These vegetables and salad crops are grown for anybody to pick once they are ready. We feel we have also provided a central area within the village where young and old alike can sit, rest, relax, meet for a chat, read the paper, admire the garden or play on the log circle. We intend to use this area for the occasional barbecue or social event in the summer months and would encourage everybody in Loxwood to make full use of this area. Horticultural Whirl at Wisborough Open Gardens

isborough Green was bustling with life on Saturday 8th June, when two great village institutions shared a beautifully sunny day for the Wisborough Green Open Gardens and the Primary School Summer Fayre. People came from miles around to see some stunning gardens in full bloom as well as share in the delights of a traditional English fayre. Day 2 of the Open Gardens on Sunday 9th June proved equally busy, with a bumper number of visitors who, despite a little less sunshine, shared horticultural tips and advice with garden owners while appreciating the immaculate lawns, heady scents, and vibrant blooms on show. New for this year was our special guest, the cheeky Norman the Gnome, who took up residence in the elegant gardens of Fernlea. He was spied by a number of visitors, but the lucky winner who takes Norman home with them was Ruby Jerges.

This event was organised by LINKS, a group of volunteers from church and community who work to raise much needed funds for the ancient church of St Peter ad Vincula in Wisborough Green. They are currently raising money for a long awaited refurbishment project. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of the throng of eager volunteers who stewarded, baked cakes and served refreshments. Lastly, and most importantly, our thanks to the dedicated gardeners who generously shared their private spaces with countless strangers. We are delighted that the Wisborough Green Open Gardens raised in excess of £2,800 this year. Attention now turns to the next exciting LINKS event, the Music & Arts Festival 3rd-7th July 2013. Safe journey

efore you head off in search of the sun this summer, make sure your car is prepared for the trip with these eight essential checks: 1. Make sure your car isn’t due for a service or MOT while you’re away. If there’s anything that doesn’t feel quite right, get it looked at well before your journey. 2. Just before you go, check the oil and coolant levels, and top up the screen wash. 3. Measure your tyre pressures to ensure a smooth and fuel-efficient ride. If you are carrying a heavy load, the tyres may need to be at a higher pressure. And, of course, make sure your tyres are not worn! (The legal limit for car tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre though it is recommended you replace your tyres when the tread is less than 3mm as the performance of the tyre, especially in wet conditions, will begin to reduce significantly.) 4. Examine your wiper blades and replace them if they are cracked or worn. You can clean them with a cloth dipped in screen wash.

5. Check all the car’s exterior lights are working, including the fog lights. 6. Clean the windows and mirrors. 7. Take with you supplies of oil, water, antifreeze and screen wash. Not all cars carry a ‘proper’ spare tyre these days (many have an aerosol of ‘get you home’ sealant but if you do have a spare ensure it is properly inflated and legal – and make sure you know how to change it! If you are travelling in mainland Europe, you will also need headlamp beam adapters, an alcohol breathalyser, GB sticker, spare bulbs, a warning triangle and reflective vests. 8. And finally, make sure you have details of your breakdown service and insurance handy, so if you do have a problem you can get it sorted out as quickly as possible. If you have children, why not get them to help you with the above checks? After all, they will have a car of their own one day! Alex Brown

hese days almost everyone who uses a computer has at least one password, usually more, and like your PIN number the more you have the harder they are to remember. This leads people to make the potentially disastrous mistake of creating one simple password and then using it for absolutely everything. It may sound scary but there are people out there who spend their time writing programmes that specifically aim to crack your password and once these programmes are set to run – they don’t stop. So the stronger your password the safer you are online. There is lots of advice about passwords available on the Internet, especially how to create a strong one. If you Google “why you need a secure password” one of the first results that comes up on the UK pages is a page about that very topic from the University of Manchester. Their website says: “The longer and more complex your password is, the more difficult it is to discover it.” The problem is the longer and more complex your password is, the harder it is to remember! So here is are three simple steps to creating a really strong password that will give those cracking

programmes some food for thought: 1. Choose a word or phrase that has some meaning to you. Ideally it needs to have more than eight letters. This will make it easy to remember, e.g. ‘I love my cat’ (without the spaces of course) or your child’s first name and surname will do. 2. Strong passwords have a mixture of upper and lower case, so use sentence capitalisation. i.e. for each new word use a capital letter: ‘I Love My Cat’. 3. The strongest passwords have a mixture of letters and numbers, so replace certain letters with the a visually similar number (like on personalised car number plates). So an I becomes a number 1; an E becomes a 3, an A becomes a 4 and an O becomes an 0 (zero). Upper or lower case doesn’t matter, it’s the same numbers for those letters. Now your simple phrase that’s easy to remember becomes: 1L0v3MyC4t. That would be pretty hard to guess and even though you might recognise it as an easy to remember phrase, to a decryption programme this is a truly random mix of numbers and letters. Clever huh? In April 2014 I am going to Nakuru in Kenya for two weeks to help children in poverty. I will visit schools and assist local charity by giving the schools resources and teaching the children. (I am currently studying a Level 3 Cache Diploma in Childcare and Education at Chichester College before going on to do a Teaching degree next year.) On Friday 2nd August I am running a fundraising event at The Blacksmiths Arms, Adversane (where I work). This great evening will comprise a two-course meal and music from the two lead guitarists of The Fabulous Shadows. Tickets are just £20, £12 of which goes towards my trip. Billingshurst welcomes new Firefighter

ike Hartley has joined the team at Billingshurst Fire Station. Mike is a full time Landscaper who lives in Wisborough Green but responds to Emergency Fire Calls during the evenings and weekends when he is at home. Although we have had a quiet month with fire calls Mike has experienced and got the taste for what it’s like to repsond during the evenings and weekends. He will undergo further training to become a competent Firefighter which takes around two years. Hard work and committment on station and gathering experience on calls will see him to the end of his probation. Mike will also be heavily involved in Fire Safety which is a key role all

Firefighters play. We like to give advice on any fire safety related issues. For example, working smoke alarms is a must in all homes, testing them is just as important but is often neglected. One way to remember, is ‘Test it Tuesday’. Go on, test yours now! I will return to smoke alarms in a future article, together with other ways to ensure you, your loved ones, and your house remain safe. Dan Game
