riting these monthly editorials is getting to be like riding on a big dipper. One month it’s all doom and gloom with lockdowns and restrictions, the next it’s more optimistic with restrictions easing. Until a few days ago I, like all of us, was looking forward to the so-called Freedom Day, scheduled for 21st June. The day when life would return to near-normal. However, as I write this (12th June) it seems the government may postpone Freedom Day by a month or possibly more, due to the Delta variant, the most infectious strain yet. Clearly caution and safety must come first but it does beg the question, ‘Just when will it all end?’ Let’s just be sure to enjoy those events that are open to us. WELCOME TO BILLINGSHURST FAMILY CHURCH I am sure I am not alone in feeling sad and nostalgic about another missed Billishow, arguably the most anticipated date in the Billingshurst diary. For many months, folk would have been busy sewing costumes and painting props in preparation for the annual Carnival procession through the village ending up in the field on Lower Station Road. We all knew what would then follow: face painting, bouncy castle, dog show, live entertainment, farm animals, ice cream, etc and then, COVID hit and it all stopped. If this pandemic has taught us anything it us that life is unpredictable. For some, the occasions missed have been even more poignant, such as a family member’s wedding abroad or the birth of a first grandchild or even the funeral of a loved one. It may seem impossible to find any comfort or assurance in such an unreliable world but the bible reminds us that we can find it in the life and promises of Jesus Christ. The writer of the book of Hebrews said, ‘Now Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see’, in other words, God’s got this, even in the face of hardship, and our trusting in Him enables us to look forward with Hope. It is in this Hope that we, God willing, are eagerly anticipating the reopening of our Rainbow Toddlers group, we can’t wait to see old friends and meet some of your new lockdown babies for the first time! Water – the gift of life

icture the refreshing taste of a chilled glass of water quenching your thirst on a hot day. Imagine the touch of the waves on your skin as you paddle along the seashore. Wonder at water splashing from the watering can of an attentive gardener onto precious kitchen gardens and brave seedlings… Water is an essential of life. Sadly, so many in our World do not have even the basics of clean drinking water and children stay thirsty. Here in West Sussex, we turn on our taps and have easy access to water. Water is a part of our daily lives. In the Bible water features frequently. There is an intriguing account of Jesus meeting a woman beside a well. She is there for the daily back-breaking chore of collecting water. She’s chosen a time when there are no crowds, as she lives on the margins of society. She arrives at the well to find a stranger there: Jesus. This ordinary day turns into an extraordinary encounter with Jesus, the son of God. He asks her for a drink of water. That surprises her as in that time no Jewish man would speak to a foreign

woman like her. Jesus switches the situation as he offers her water that meant she would never go thirsty again. He was offering her water that would become a spring within, welling up to eternal life. What could he mean? The story is worth a read as Jesus continues to show how perceptive he was about her daily life and how much she needed the water of new life he was offering her, far better than the water of the well they were standing by. We know how everyday water can refresh our thirst. Can we picture a gift of water that gifts us with inner refreshing and fullness of life through into eternity? An inner source that never runs dry and is freely offered. To receive this, we are told to come before God and ask. After our hard journeying through the pandemic chapters our hearts are indeed dry and thirsty for refreshing. Pondering the gift of our loving, heavenly Father who waits to refresh us is worth a thought. Read the story in the Bible: John, Chapter 4.

‘Alternative’ – or alternatives

hould you be researching different funeral providers, comparisons will often be influenced by a perception of the ethos and style of each company, creating a spectrum from ‘traditional’ to ‘modern’ / ‘alternative’ / ‘progressive’. For ourselves, the labels are to some degree very confusing and not applicable. When someone calls us to request an ‘alternative funeral’, we appreciate that this means different things to different people: something that feels like an ‘alternative’ choice to one person might be very familiar and preferred by someone else. Our approach is always to consider each funeral as unique as the life lived by the person we are caring for and the individual circumstances of the family and friends we are supporting. Since none of us live our lives in set structures or patterns, this is why you won’t see set ‘packages’ on our website to outline the services we provide. Each element of possibilities for funeral choices will always be fully explained and the options outlined (with cost guidance), for each person

to make their own choices. The funeral should not be dictated by the funeral director’s preferences or convenience, but by what you think would be most helpful. Prosciutto di Parma Salad with Figs & Blue Cheese The simplest and quickest of simple suppers, for eating al fresco on a warm summer’s evening

METHOD

1. Divide the rocket, figs, ham and cheese between four plates. 2. Sprinkle with basil leaves and drizzle with oil. 3. Season to taste and serve immediately with warm crusty ciabatta bread and a glass of Italian Rosé.

Preparation time: 10 minutes. Assembly time 5 minutes. Serves 4

4 figs, washed and quartered 4 slices Parma ham 60g blue cheese (Dolcelatte if you want authenticity) 2 tbsp chopped basil leaves Handfuls of rocket leaves 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste

“Volunteering’s shown that St Catherine’s is the heart of our community”

ver 600 volunteers support St Catherine’s Hospice to provide vital end-of-life care to terminally ill people and their families when it’s needed most. Here, a team of volunteer Admin Assistants, who support the hospice’s retail team at St Catherine’s furniture warehouse share their experiences of volunteering for the local charity. Carolyn Stokes started volunteering in September 2020. She says, “I retired in March 2019. I had a lovely year off picking up new hobbies and projects, but I’ve always thought I’d like to volunteer. I had a friend who very sadly needed to use St Catherine’s so I knew of the good work they did.” Babs O’Kane first got involved with St Catherine’s when she ran the London Marathon in 2008. “I experienced then how supportive St Catherine’s is,” she explains. “Then, when my dear friend spent her last days there I was overwhelmed by the warmth, care and support given to her, her family and friends. From that point forward, I really wanted to volunteer. I started volunteering two mornings a week last September after I was made redundant during the first lockdown.” Aliza Siddque is a recent university graduate and decided to volunteer after witnessing the suffering her Grandad went through from having a terminal illness before he passed away. She explains, “I wanted to give my time to a hospice and support the work they do caring for those suffering from terminal illnesses. I also wanted to build my confidence, work with new people and gain useful skills. Volunteering has helped bring productivity back into my life, and given me purpose and the opportunity to make a difference for others in my community.” In their Admin Assistant roles the volunteers help in varied ways They update the local charity’s Gift Aid database, which helps the hospice get an extra 25% on donation from taxpayers, help package up hospice eBay orders, and recently worked together to implement a hugely successful doorstep collection service. Carolyn, Babs and Aliza arranged over 450 collections from people in the local community Aliza says, “Taking time to talk to each supporter and learn what donating means to them personally is lovely and knowing my time doing that has helped

raise money for the hospice is a sense of accomplishment like no other.” Babs agrees. “People use their donations, be it furniture, clothes, books or bric-abrac, to support the hospice. I’ve had very humbling experiences where people have phoned in, and said they’ve recently lost a loved one and now want to donate their things.” As well as supporting St Catherine’s, volunteering has provided Carolyn, Babs and Aliza with personal benefits too “Feeling like I’m giving something back is the best thing about volunteering.” explains Carolyn. “St Catherine’s shop staff are hugely appreciative, which is very rewarding, as is going home and knowing I’ve made a difference by helping to raise funds.” Babs adds, “Volunteering is flexible, and I feel I’m doing something worthwhile. It allows me to use skills I developed during my career, but I’ve also been given opportunities to develop and grow. When I was made redundant I felt shock and panic, but I’ve turned that negative into a positive by sharing my skills with St Catherine’s. Volunteering has helped me during the pandemic because it’s kept me around people, and given me a reason to get up and out the door. It’s enabled me to cope with what’s been a difficult time for many.” For Aliza, volunteering has given her a confidence boost – “It’s given me the boost that I needed.” “Every volunteer matters at St Catherine’s,” explains Babs. “On my first day, Annette, Retail Operations Manager, said, if anybody asks you what you do here, please never say, Oh, I’m only a volunteer. She told me you’re not an only, and that’s so true. We’re made to feel part of the team. I’ve been overwhelmed at how many people we speak to who want to tell us how the hospice has helped them. Charity Cycling Challenge for Sussex Rider

ussex cyclist Mark Slawinski of Barns Green will be taking on a solo LEJOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats) bike challenge this August. The ride is an attempt to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a cause close to Mark’s heart. As a keen rider of all types of bikes, Mark has had this goal in his sights for a while. It’s a challenging pedal from one end of the country to the other, and the chosen route takes in the majority of the west coast of the UK. This will be a meaningful trip in many ways, not least because Mark’s Grandma Anne, a nurse and avid cyclist, sadly lost her life to Motor Neurone Disease in the 1970s before Mark was born. At the time there was relatively little awareness of the disease and its effects – she was misdiagnosed twice – and Mark’s

Grandfather Tom, also a nurse, provided the complex care required. There is now greater clarity and much research into MND taking place, in order to give hope, support and precious time to sufferers. Every penny raised by Mark will contribute directly to this. Mark is attempting to do his LEJOG in 14 days without any assistance, although he admits it may involve a lot of cake! A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewers Willow Coby and Grahame Pearson Dependant Brethren of Sussex and Surrey, a History of the Cokelers – Roger Nash The Cokelers, a Christian group active from 1850 to the 1970s built chapels and opened ‘Combination Stores’ in larger communities. These buildings remain; the last known Cokeler died in 2008. There is no definitive answer to the L A LOC R ‘Why Cokeler?’ question. O The book ranges across all AUTH communities: Loxwood, Northchapel, Warnham, Shamley Green, South Norwood, Chichester, and Hove. Others lived in Plaistow, Fernhurst, Lodsworth, and Haslemere. Loxwood was the most significant centre. The author’s great uncle was their leader for 30 years. The book therefore has most content on Loxwood but each community has its own chapter. Roger Nash lives in Rudgwick and is an experienced local historian. He has accumulated a unique collection of photographs and other documents with which to tell a graphic story, full of family history, always anchored in the places where Dependants lived, worshipped, and traded. Following the arrival of the charismatic John Sirgood in Loxwood and Shamley Green in 1850, villagers flocked to open-air sermons on the commons. Soon, there were enough converts to develop a network of chapels. Sirgood developed the idea of communal living and shopkeeping, selling to both

his congregation and other villagers. This enlightened policy put the womenfolk centre stage. By the 20th century, the pull of the ‘outside world’, and the large number of single members, began a slow decline culminating in their complete termination. Private people, with a good heart, convinced of the rightness of their humble lives, few had a bad word for them. We Wear Underpants – Katie Abey There are many different styles of books for young children, and I know that when mine were both toddlers, one sort of book that was guaranteed to occupy them every time was a spotting book. We Wear Underpants is this type of book, and the illustrations are wonderful. Each page is full of animals wearing… well, the sorts of things that you would NOT expect an animal to wear! From the titular item of underpants to T-shirts, scarves, wellies, and pyjamas. Each page asks the reader to look for a different thing. Counting candy floss on a page with animals wearing T-shirts at the fair. Finding the stripy scarf and deciding which scarf you would want to wear. And who is dreaming while wearing pyjamas? The final page asks, ‘What will you wear today?’ A lovely way to get young children thinking about getting dressed – a task that often seems to be low on the list of priorities for a child that age!

Two beloved pre-school teachers retire

wo very loved and long-serving teachers who have over 80 years of collective teaching experience will be taking their well earned retirement at the end of July from Plaistow Pre-School in West Sussex. Affectionately known as Auntie Carol and Auntie Margaret by children and past students alike, the pair who are now great friends and whose families holiday together, came to the very difficult decision to announce their retirement from Plaistow Pre-School earlier this month and will be leaving at the end of July 2021. Margaret Edwards said, “It has been a wrench to step away after so many wonderful years.” Carol Krol added, “It is hard to put into words how many wonderful years I have had at Plaistow Pre-School. I value all the experiences I have been lucky enough to have been part of in the past 40 years.” Carol joined Plaistow Pre-School in 1982, and Margaret in 1978. Carol explained, “So much has changed in the past 40 years. It has been tough at times adapting to those changes, new rules and regulations, Ofsted and the change in parents’ needs. But one thing that has remained is our core ethos ‘learning through play’ and of course the care

hilled out fun in the sun” – the Renegades’ first weekend camp post the stifling lockdown was just what the doctor ordered. “It was the best camp ever, “ says Group Leader Gareth Miller. “The kids needed time together to just relax and have a laugh.” Helped by the glorious bank holiday weather, 24 kids joined the camp at Brownings Farm in Kirdford. “Sitting under the stars with blankets, around the fires, sipping hot chocolate and sharing music – it just doesn’t get much better than that,” laughs Gareth. “The campfire is a big thing for Renegades.” The weekend started messily as an organised custard pie fight got rid of some excess energy but getting rid of the cream was not quite so easy. “Being on camp, we only had buckets of water so fortunately the hot weather dried everyone!” After the pies came everything from hide and seek and a night hike in the woods to bushcrafting and archery. “Thanks to the Nicholls family for allowing us to use one of their large fields, we were able to try historical warfare archery and shoot the arrows safely into the sky. Everything you’ve ever seen in the films we were

able to do. A parent is one of the highest Master Archers in the country and he suggested we used night knocks, which meant that we could shoot in the dark and at mad Zombie heads. The kids loved it,” grins Gareth. Bushcraft Officer Becci Coombes joined the camp to teach the kids how to survive in the wilderness and hunt for good tinder, for example the fungus King Alfred cakes, and how to light fires with cotton wool, flint and steel. Being a Renegade camp, forget the old idea of sausages and beans and think instead full English breakfast, spaghetti carbonara and puttanesca and fajitas with homemade guacamole and salsa. “We strongly believe in giving the kids nutritious but adventurous food,” says Gareth. “They all muck in to help, safely chopping the tomatoes, avocadoes and garlic or whatever is needed. It’s all part of the experience.” So, tired, happy and already planning the next camp, the children unanimously voted this one a huge hit. Renegades membership costs just £10 a month. Jubilee Fields Fishing Lake Swimming in the lake is DANGEROUS and could result in death or serious illness, it also damages lake life. Swimming in the lake is an OFFENCE as it breaks a local by-law and those caught doing so will be dealt with by the Police. Please call the Police on 101 if you see someone swimming in the lake. Please do not allow your dogs to swim in the lake.

Neighbourhood Warden Drop-In Sessions Barry & Julie, Billingshurst Neighbourhood Wardens have been able to start up their weekly Drop-In sessions again and more information on this can be found on the Council’s website and social media pages. Traffic Calming across the parish The Council receives many requests for traffic calming across the Parish. Although ultimate responsibility for such matters resides with

WSCC as highways authority, the Parish Council does have some power to promote such schemes and it is currently focusing its energies on developing proposals to make East Street and High Street more pedestrian and cycle-friendly, following the opening of the new spine road which should remove through traffic. Parish Councillors consider there may be scope to set up a Traffic Calming Working Party, made up of local residents and Councillors, which could consider such future requests, determine which are possible, and take forward new schemes. The Council is keen to gauge the level of interest before setting up such a group, so if you would like to offer your services and get involved, please email clerk@billingshurst.gov.uk. At this stage we are not looking for a list of possible projects. In the meantime there is lots of information about traffic calming at www.westsussex.gov.uk.

Billingshurst Parish Council is delighted to report that following the referendum on 6th May, residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish of Billingshurst. 87.83% of residents voted in favour and 12.17% against. This is a very important milestone in the Neighbourhood Planning process; the next stage will be for Horsham District Council to take the plan to its June 2021 Full Council meeting to formally ‘make’ the plan. Started in 2016, hundreds if not thousands of hours have been put into developing the plan which will guide the future development of the parish. Although councillors have over the years supported residents in trying to resist large-scale development in the area, realistically we all know that some development will come whether we like it or not. Having an adopted Neighbourhood Plan will help shape that development and the numerous Aims and Policies within the plan should provide for a greener more sustainable community. The plan also means that rather than 15% of the Community Infrastructure Levy coming directly into Billingshurst, the Parish Council will now receive 25% which it can spend on projects to improve our community. I would like to thank everyone who voted in the referendum but also those who took part in the various consultations over the past few years which helped shape the plan. A large number of people played integral roles in the process of drafting the plan but I would particularly like to thank our Clerk Greg Burt, Admin Assistant Sarah Meyer, former councillors Jon Perks, Sue Kingston and Lesley Wilding and last but not least Navigus Planning, who guided us through the whole process. Stay safe while having a barbecue

barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience but it’s all too easy to be distracted when you have friends and family around you while cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions: General Safety • Make sure your barbecue is in good working order • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area • Never leave the barbecue unattended • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it. Charcoal Barbecues • Use only enough charcoal to cover the base to a depth of about 50mm (2 inches) • Only use recognised fire lighters or starter fuel and only on cold coals – use the minimum

necessary and never use petrol • Never put hot ashes straight into a plastic dustbin or wheelie bin – they could melt the plastic and cause a fire. Gas Barbecues • Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder • Change cylinders outdoors if possible or in a well ventilated area • If you suspect a leak to the cylinder or pipe work, brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles – tighten to fix but do not overtighten • After cooking, turn off the gas cylinder before turning off at the controls to ensure any residual gas in the pipe work is used up. We want everyone to enjoy having a barbecue, but we have seen it go wrong far too many times. By following a few simple steps, it means we won’t have to gate crash the party! The level of protection is determined by the type of fire safe and its fire rating. Not all fire safe boxes are alike. Standard fireproof safes protect valuables against intense heat and smoke damage for periods of up to 120 minutes. But it depends on what you want to store. The fire test standards require that the critical maximum temperature of the following media cannot be exceeded: Digital media: 120°C; Computer data: 52°C because electronic media melts at a lower temperature than paper combusts. A life to remember

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

There was a feeling of great sadness over the farm this spring. We have lost one of our family. In over half a century as a fruit farm we have had many pickers attend our autumn harvests. Of these, perhaps around fifty have become part of the farm’s family, as they, then their children, followed by their children’s children, have joined us to gather the fruit every year. There was, though, one lovely lady who had a very special place in our hearts. Our Gladys. Gladys was already an established picker when I arrived on the farm 50 years ago, and she remained with us until the last tree was grubbed a decade or so ago. I have written about her time with us in our local village magazine, but I felt her story was deserving of telling to a wider audience and while doing this it got me recalling a time that I look back on with great affection. It also made me realise just how fortunate I was to have witnessed those wonderful years. I came into farming just as the countryside was recovering from the struggles of the war. A time when farming was under a massive restructuring. A multitude of new machines were coming forward to replace the dwindling workforce, and old methods of work were being replaced by a raft of new ideas. In the world of the orchard, trees were being replaced with ones that didn’t need ladders to harvest them. Varieties were being bred for the new love of sweetness and crispness. We were starting to buy with our eyes instead of our tastebuds! In the dairy world the milker with their bucket and stool was replaced by a machine that milked the cow without the need of any human intervention. A changing world. In the fields, gates were widened and hedges removed to make way for giant harvesters that ate their way through the corn fields with ravenous appetites that the reaper of a couple of decades earlier would have never dreamt of.

Our Gladys worked on through all these changes. A wartime member of the Women’s Land Army, she greeted all these changes on the land that she so loved so much with a stoic shrug of the shoulders. A response of “Got to get it done, ducks” would be her work ethic to any task presented to her, no matter what the effort needed. With her husband Bill they worked their own farm as well as giving a willing hand to others when help was needed. So it was for half a century that she would come to the harvest… whatever the weather. The only time I saw her in a bad mood was on the day I thought that a lady of eighty-plus years should not be required to climb a picking ladder… and removed hers and hid it. I tried to explain the reasoning behind my decision but I was made very well aware of my error in a most forceful way! In fact she never fully forgave me and her granddaughter told me she still occasionally remarked about my error until the day she died. The end of season lamb roast always ended with a plate of her apple pie laced with thick cream followed by hugs and kisses as we once again wished each other a happy ten months until we met once more for the new year’s crop. Such was life around the villages in those days. For so many it revolved around the farming season, carrying out the various roles needed in helping out in the tasks as the year progressed. Now those orchards have gone. No more chatter and laughter echoing through the long rows of fruit. No more children in tears as they try to find lost mums and dads among the tangle of loaded branches. Most of all though, no more like Gladys. Folk who were the very heart of a village. Who spent their lives giving their all to the soil they worked and the friends they knew. Bless them all. One other thing… Gladys demanded a gift on her final day of working with us. It was a gift that we all were so very happy to give her. She left with it clutched tightly in her arms: her picking bucket! I think after fifty years, she’d earned it! John Nash

The Best Scarecrow Competition 2021 Following on from the success of Billingshurst Village Scarecrow Competition in 2020 Billingshurst Rotary Club are running the competition again this year as we are all in need Billingshurst & District of some well-earned fun, and are joining in with ‘The Picnic in The Park’ event on Sunday 18th July where they will be will be judged followed by the presentations of some great prizes.

Plaistow Maypole event raises £1,100

he Plaistow Pre-School Maypole returned for 2021 on Wednesday 26th May as COVID-19 restrictions eased and raised over £1,000 for the pre-school charity. Friends and family joined the 26 pre-schoolers and 6 staff who sang and danced around the maypole, holding hands with the delicate original ribbons from 49 years ago looped over their wrists. Carol Krol and her team led the children and recited the song “Here we go round the maypole” brilliantly. Established in 1972 shortly after the Pre-school opened 6 years previous, the traditional Plaistow Maypole fete is usually held on May Day, the first May bank holiday. The event was cancelled for the first time in its 49-year history in 2020 and staff, children so parents were very excited that it made a comeback for 2021. Carol Krol, lead practitioner said, “The children have been practising the songs for weeks and were all so wonderful. It has been an honour to lead the children around the maypole each year since I started at the Pre-School 39 years ago. This was my last year before I retire at the end of the term and will certainly be the event I will miss the most”. Organisers used the online platform Raffal to host a hugely successful virtual raffle with generous donations from D Sanderson Garden Services, Slinfold Golf and Country Club and Farina & Fondant as well as local toy shop Cocobanana. On the day the intimate

event still had a refreshment stall with cake donations from keen family bakers which went down a treat, uniform sales and a very popular toy tombola. Despite its size of less than 100 people in total, the event raised an incredible £1,101.80. Sarah Denyer, Plaistow Pre-School Chairperson said, “We are really pleased with the result and ever so grateful to all the local businesses who have supported the event and all those in the community who have bought tickets, and to family and friends who joined us on the day. “The sun shone despite black clouds lingering in the distance. Carol and our amazing staff team did a wonderful job of preparing the children for their performance. The small size of the event was perfect and all of the children and staff sang their hearts out with the biggest smiles on their faces. It was a joy to watch.” Organised by a voluntary group of parents whose children attend Plaistow Pre-School, Plaistow PreSchool Maypole Fete will return bigger and better than before for their 50th anniversary event on the first May Bank Holiday in 2022, so please watch this space! How do you know if your dog is in pain? It’s sometimes really hard to tell when your dog is in pain as some dogs are really good at hiding it, while others may only give subtle hints. Here’s some signs to look out for: • Mobility changes – generally moving around less, beginning to limp or struggling to get up. Has difficulty getting into the car or going up stairs. Is finding it hard to get on the sofa (if they’re allowed to!), has stopped running around as much. • Eating changes – unwilling to eat, or stopped completely – this could be a sign of tooth pain. • Rubbing areas – rubbing around their eyes or face could be an indicator of eye, mouth or ear pain. • Breathing changes – persistently panting in cold weather, or their breathing rate when they’re resting increases (it should average 15-30 breaths per minute). • Behaviour changes – become grumpy all of a sudden, or are quiet and hides away from company. They may become whiny and more needy. If you spot any of these signs you should make an appointment with your vet. Please take care, a dog in severe pain has an increased risk of biting you. A loving, normal friendly dog will potentially bite if the painful area is touched/moved.

ell, so much for summer, I can’t say I’m impressed! My fur is wet, my bed keeps getting damp, mum is fed up with washing my blankies and trying to get them dry, the wind is howling and Mav is more annoying than ever. I feel like I am going to grow webbed feet! I think I shall bite the weatherman if he doesn’t hurry up and send some sunshine our way soon. I would happily stay on the sofa but mum insists we must go out and make the most of the long days as we have waited so long for them and on top of that we still have training, even the bunnies are staying underground! On the bright side though, it is nice and cool, although mum refers to it as “freezing” although I suppose she doesn’t have a nice thick fur coat to keep her warm – unless you count the fuzzy mop on top of her head! I am not sure but I have a suspicion that I’m to be sent to the grooming lady very soon as I saw her and mum talking and looking over at me, I’m not too impressed with that as I come home smelling like a perfume factory but mum of course, thinks that is wonderful and doesn’t stop going on about it for days, I just really hope the foxes have the decency to leave plenty of poo so I can roll in it to remove the odour of cleanliness as soon as I can! The final insult is that Mav gets taken for a lovely walk and gets a treat while I’m stuck in the bath being preened and chopped; Mav only gets to go now and again for a tidy up as he being a young squirt doesn’t grow such a luxurious and fine fur coat as I do. I’m really chuffed with myself as I have found a

whole new way to get Mav into trouble! I simply egg him on to eat mum’s vegetable plants. I find if I pick at the odd leaf of her courgettes he’ll want them and literally pull them up and run off with them thinking he’s got one over on me, but he actually ends up in mum’s bad books! It’s so funny, especially when he’s haring around the house with a whole plant, roots, soil and all with her in hot pursuit! I just watch proceedings from my comfy sofa spot while pretending to be fast asleep. I have also found that standing on his head gets rid of him if he steals my favourite sofa spot too! It’s my Birthday soon and I’m hoping for a big, juicy steak like the one I had last year, Dad can’t believe that us Spaniels get a steak on our Birthday, we eat better than he does apparently! Mum gets us really nice meat, tasty treats and makes sure we get all our vitamins, Dad is lucky to get a ready meal – whatever that is – sounds OK to me, I am a great lover of all things edible, especially cat poo much to mum’s horror and disgust! Talking of cats, one scared the life out of me last week, I was trotting along nosing in the hedge as usual when this angry fur ball shot out from under my feet hissing and spitting! It made me jump and woof in surprise, I legged it back towards mum and left Mav to deal with it, he woofed too then backed up pretty quickly – those farm cats aren’t to be toyed with! I prefer to just study them from the floor while they perch on the hay bales staring at me; if they come too close I’m outta there!! Until next time, stay safe Billy! Jeannette Douglas

Save water

n spite of the somewhat soggy spring, water is an increasingly precious resource in the UK. Over the past few decades, rivers, reservoirs, and ground water supplies have become depleted. It’s important to save water where we can. Most of us have enough space for at least one water butt, and there are slimline versions for smaller plots. Connect them to every available downpipe around your house! Fit guttering to sheds and summer houses to allow even more water collection. Keep the butts covered to prevent leaves falling in and deter mosquitos from breeding. Bulk up soil with organic matter, such as compost and leaf mould. This improves free-draining soil particularly, but most soil types will benefit. It prevents clay soil baking hard and damaging roots, and on boggy soil it improves drainage and oxygenation. It’s win-win, whatever soil you garden on. Water during cooler parts of the day. A good soak every few days is better than little and often, because when only the surface is wet most of the water evaporates or drains away. Also, water only at critical stages like germination, or when you’ve just transplanted young plants with immature root systems, or when fruit is setting such as tomatoes or strawberries. Bare soil loses moisture quickly through evaporation so mulch, mulch, mulch. Use straw, grass clippings or leaf mould. Mulching has the added benefit of smothering weeds. A green lawn looks lush, but no-one should be watering a lawn nowadays. Yes it will yellow, but lawns are tough and will green up at the first sign of rain. I retired my sprinkler system years ago. Sprinklers are wasteful and it’s better to implement

targeted watering or even a slow drip-irrigation system. Work with your garden rather than against it. My free-draining lime soil favours plants such as lavenders and other silver-leaved species. If you garden on clay you might choose roses or Ribes sanguineum and Malus (crab apples). Greenhouses can be a major source of water wastage. Never place pots directly on to staging. Instead use capillary matting or trays to capture run-off and enable plants to access this when needed. The only time you shouldn’t use rainwater is with seedlings. They are vulnerable a variety of fungal infections called which fall under the catchall phrase, ‘damping off disease’. Tap water only is recommended for seedlings. But once they are potted up, you can switch to harvested rainwater. ‘Grey’ water is water from washing up or washing vegetables, or even bathwater. Collecting it can be a good idea providing you take certain precautions. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to help you make the most of your own grey water. Use rinsing water only or eco products free from phosphates which are harmful to the microflora in the soil. Bathwater should not be stored for too long and should only be used to water flowers, never edible crops, because of the risk of bacterial growth harmful to humans if ingested. Apprenticeship first for Wey & Arun Canal Trust

he Wey & Arun Canal Trust has become the first independent canal trust in the UK to take on a Water Environment Worker apprentice. Nineteen-year-old Adam Rayner has begun work at the Trust on the level 3 apprenticeship, run in tandem with Bridgwater & Taunton College. The course was developed by the Environment Agency, in partnership with the National Trust, the Canal and River Trust and Somerset Drainage Board in conjunction with the Canal & Rivers Trust in 2019. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is the first independent canal trust to invest in the 18-month apprenticeship scheme. Adam will work with Trust employees and volunteers to gain on-the-job training while studying remotely and in person at the West Country college. With no shortage of projects on the go and ongoing canal maintenance tasks, Adam will receive a thorough grounding in many elements of canal restoration through the Trust, from site work, health & safety to habitat management and more. Adam said his background working with the Girlguiding and Scouting movement and interest in the outdoors made the role an appealing one. “I’m looking forward to learning many new things and being able to work with all the volunteers. The apprenticeship scheme means I get some real hands-on experience alongside

my classroom work, and a professional training qualification at the end of it. “The Trust has achieved so much already and I am keen to be a part of their future success.” Wey & Arun Canal Trust vicechairman and training director Margaret Darvill said, “This is a bold move for an independent canal trust and we are really proud to have been able to offer Adam this opportunity to learn about waterway management and show how rewarding canal restoration can be.
