echnology never stands still and one of the latest innovations to hit advertising is the QR Code, QR standing for Quick Response. (See cover or Alec Stoner’s ad on page 31 for examples.) Readable by any camera-equipped smartphone or iPad (once the free QR Reader app is installed) it will open the advertiser’s website on your device. A QR Code can be included on an advert or even applied to a vehicle! Although usually used to launch a website, it can also send a text or call a phone number. To generate a QR Code just go to any QR Code website – I use qrcode.kaywa.com . Grahame Cover photo: Lovely cat but how is it relevant for a June cover? Well, the cat’s name is June! Chocolate Sorbet

Light, refreshing and gluten-free!

METHOD

1. Prepare the sugar syrup by placing the sugar and water into a saucepan. Bring to the boil without stirring and leave to simmer until the sugar crystals have dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from the heat. 2. Melt the dark chocolate in a heat-proof bowl suspended over a saucepan of just-simmering water. When it has melted add the 100ml / 3½ fl oz water and reheat until warm. Whisk in the cocoa, then add the melted chocolate, whisking together until smooth. 3. Let the mixture cool, then chill it by placing the bowl of sorbet mixture over a bowl of water filled with ice cubes. Stir occasionally but don’t let any water splash into the sorbet mix. 4. For the smoothest results churn the chilled mixture in an ice cream maker until ready. 5. If you don’t have an ice cream maker then place the mixture in a shallow bowl and freeze it in the coldest part of the freezer. Take it out every hour and whisk it to break up the ice crystals. Made this way it will have a slightly more granular texture but it will still be delicious. 6. Remove from the freezer about twenty minutes before serving.

Prep time: 15 min, Freezing time: 3-4 hours plus chilling time, Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS 100g / 3½ oz good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) broken into pieces 100ml / 3½ fl oz filtered or mineral water 60g / 2½ oz cocoa powder For the sugar syrup 250ml / 9 fl oz filtered or mineral water 150g / 5oz caster sugar Serving suggestions Although this is lovely on its own try serving it with: • Strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, then chilled. • Rich butter shortbread (obviously not if you’re on a gluten-free diet!). • With a glass of coffee, chocolate or mint liqueur poured over.

Faces of Billingshurst – Rob Warde

H

i, my name Rob Warde and I’m the author of the Faces of Billingshurst series. I thought it was about time I featured myself. Originally from Hertfordshire I came down to Surrey in the late 80’s before moving to West Sussex in 2003. My parents grew up in Hove and Shoreham so I feel like I’ve come home. In my opinion this is the most beautiful county in the England. The surrounding landscape has been the inspiration for many of my photographs. I bought my first camera in 1993 and it only came out of the house when I went away on holiday. It wasn’t until later that my interest in photography began to develop. Since then

its become more than a hobby, it’s a passion. It provides me with a creative outlet, challenges me every day and that excites me. It’s a challenge to capture a single moment in time, something unique, something special and something that my client will appreciate. That is the kind of challenge I enjoy. I’ve worked in the IT department of a large chemicals company for the past 24 years. I now feel it’s time for a change and have decided to set up my own photography business. You can find out more about me and the services I off at my website www.robwarde.com. Rob Warde www.facesofbillingshurst.com

One Hundred Holes in One Day!

D

o you enjoy a round of golf with friends? Playing 18 holes in beautiful scenery and fresh air with good company – little wonder golf continues to grow in popularity. But what would you say to playing 6 or 7 rounds of golf in one day? 108 to 126 holes played without stopping – and no use of trollies or buggies. This is precisely what 8 golfers will be doing on Friday 22nd June at West Sussex Golf Club. Starting at 4.30am, they will play until it gets dark at about 9pm. The team – Russell Barton, Andy Bayne, Roger Curtis, John Ellis, Ashley Preston, Robert Riley, David Roblin and Will Rydon – will be raising money for the Captains’ Charity, the Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention. John Ellis explains, “For the past two years we have succeeded in playing 100 holes in a day. We walked over 20 miles, and last year it rained for most of the day (see photo). This year we plan to stretch ourselves a bit further.” He adds, “We are particularly pleased to be

raising money this year for The Mary How Trust which we believe to be a wonderful organisation and a real asset for all of us who live in the area.” The Mary How Trust is a small independent charity that offers health screenings to spot the early signs of diseases such as prostate cancer, bowel cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The charity makes no charge for its service, simply inviting donations towards its costs. Roanne Moore-Loizides, Marketing & Fundraising Manager of the Mary How Trust, says, “These amazing golfers are helping to give the community the chance of a healthier future. We’re tremendously grateful to them, and to everyone who supports them.” The team are hoping to raise £8,000. If you wish to support their marathon endeavour, you can donate online by visiting: www.justgiving.com/westsussexgolf100 Roanne Moore-Loizides

Book reviews / Food and drink

A Good Read June’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Bryant and May and the Memory of Blood – Christopher Fowler It seems that Bryant and May refuse to be pushed into what some would call overdue retirement. Despite the best efforts of various government departments during their previous outings, the start of this latest novel in Christopher Fowler’s popular series finds the Peculiar Crimes Unit still very much operational. And so it should be. Where else could you find a talking fortune telling automaton, a copy of Common Folk Remedies and an ancient Tibetan skull all in the same building? The Memory of Blood is the ninth novel starring the two unlikely heroes, ably supported as ever by a vividly drawn cast of characters. This time they are battling to discover who or what is behind a series of deaths linked to a London theatre – the first murder apparently committed inside a locked room by a puppet… Thanks to the circular structure, we know where Bryant and May will end up – hosting a grim version of a cocktail party for the main suspects. However, there are many twists and turns along the way, and a significant subplot involving the sinister Oskar Kasavian and his repeated attempts to destroy the PCU also weaves across the main storyline. As ever, Fowler educates and entertains seamlessly. The book is packed with detail, from a thorough exploration of the story of Mr Punch through theatrical history and the making of waxwork models. And, of course, London is at the heart of it all, very much the third main character. Fowler’s love for, and encyclopaedic knowledge of

the capital city, is evident on almost every page. Some would argue that Bryant and May are an acquired taste. I would argue that they are a taste worth acquiring. This is as good a place to start as any. Have You Seen Who’s Just Moved In Next Door to Us? – Colin McNaughton If you are still at the wonderful stage of reading aloud to your children, then this book is a gift. On the surface, it is simple enough – the house next door has been sold to a clearly undesirable family, and the narrators are horrified. Not only that, but the rest of the street is in uproar – it’s shocking! Gradually, on each page, we are introduced to the normal residents – ‘a lovely bunch of people’ who include Mr Thing, the Humpty Dumpty family, Michelangelo and Frankenstein. Even the park is distinctly odd, boasting piranhas, a hammerhead shark and Tarzan. So who – or what – could have brought them to such a state of disbelief? I won’t give away the answer, of course – but even when you know, you will return to the story again and again, if only for the pleasure of McNaughton’s illustrations. We see inside each character’s home and running jokes carry from page to page packed with verbal and visual puns. Younger readers may note that the postman arriving with a parcel for the three little pigs is a thinly disguised wolf, but may not realise why you are chuckling the narrator’s ‘hunch’ that the face of the man in the belfry ‘rings a bell’. Multi-layered, clever and laugh out loud funny – what more can you ask for in a bedtime story?

Jubilee / Health and wellbeing

A Diamond Job!

T

he Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee this month. Here are few Jubilee facts and figures in commemoration. The Queen is the second longest-serving monarch after Queen Victoria who reigned for 63 years. During the last 60 years, the Queen has undertaken 261 official overseas visits, including 78 state visits, to 116 different countries. During these visits she’s been the recipients of some extremely unusual gifts which include: two tortoises from the Seychelles; a seven-year-old bull elephant called Jumbo from the president of Cameroon; and two black beavers presented after a visit to Canada. The Queen has sat for 129 official portraits during her reign including one by Rolf Harris!

Her Majesty is even on Facebook. She also has a website, a You Tube channel and a Twitter account! Queen Victoria was the last – and only – British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee. The Queen, who will be 85 on Accession Day in 2012, will be the oldest monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee. Queen Victoria was 77 when she celebrated hers in 1897. The official emblem, shown here, is the winning design following a Blue Peter national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. It was designed by 10-year-old Katherine Dewar, from Chester. Jeans / Private Hire

The Perfect Pair How to find the best jeans for your shape

J

eans are one of the most versatile and adaptable items in a girl’s wardrobe, but how do you find your perfect match? Choosing a pair that is right for your body shape – and not necessarily the latest fashion – will establish balance and correct proportion that is key to achieving the most flattering look. Short legs need to look longer, fat tummies flatter and big bums smaller, while slim waists and shapely legs need to be shown off! Pay attention to the rise, cut, fit and wash of your jeans. For example, hipsters elongate the body and make a bigger bottom appear smaller while low risers broaden slim hips but may also produce the ‘muffin top’ effect. Decide what you want to hide or show and then choose a style accordingly! If you are big on top, slim fit or skinny legged jeans – even if you have lovely slim legs – will make you look top-heavy while attracting unwanted attention to hips and thighs for pear shapes. The solution in both cases may be to

wear boot cuts – a flattering style for most women. The slight flare draws the eye from thicker waists and wider hips and helps achieve a balanced look. Don’t be tempted to wear jeans that are too small to ‘pull you in’. Clothing that is too tight generally makes you look fatter. Find a pair that fits you correctly at your largest point and then make the necessary adjustments elsewhere. If a tubby tummy is a problem for you, avoid tucks, pleats and button-up flies to keep the front of the jeans as flat as possible. A higher waistline can also help to keep everything tucked neatly away! Dark colours create a slimming effect so avoid paler or lighter washed out shades around problem areas. If your legs are heavy at the top, jeans that fade below the knee will draw attention away from your thighs. If tall and slender is what you are after, wear jeans with a narrower cut and make sure they are long enough to almost cover your shoes. Capri cuts are definitely out for smaller women as they shorten the leg. Finally, pay attention to pockets, stitching and other embellishments. Pockets positioned wide apart will make your bottom look bigger, as will flaps and fancy stitching. Wherever there is detail, there will be attention, so only wear it if you want to flaunt it! Use the information here as a guide about what to avoid or look for, but don’t get too bogged down. There is no substitute for actually going to the shop and trying on! The key is to accentuate your assets and then wear your jeans with confidence! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Woodland opened up at Billingshurst’s Windmill Place

A

small wood to the east of Billingshurst is the focus of an ecological improvement programme that will enhance the flora and fauna habitat and improve the accessibility to the public. The woodland project is being paid for by Devine Homes Plc, who are building a small residential development of 14 houses on adjacent land on the eastern fringe of the village off the A272. Chris Posgate, Managing Director of Devine Homes Plc, said that his company commissioned PJC Consultancy to advise on a management plan for the wood including the installation of bat boxes (see photo). The wood, which covers almost 5 acres and comprises a mixture of tree species dominated by oak, ash and sycamore, is to be maintained in situ as an area of natural and publicly accessible woodland. The work includes removing rubbish that has accumulated over many years, thinning out undergrowth from overgrown areas to allow in light, and introducing additional planting and younger trees to broaden the age spectrum in the

wood. The existing public footpaths will be improved with woodland steps on the steep slope to make walking easier. The stream will be cleared to improve water flow and marine life. “The work has benefits for everyone, Chris Posgate explained. “The wood is just 300 meters from Billingshurst’s High Street and is accessed by a public footpath from the village centre. Upon completion, local residents can enjoy strolling through the beautiful woodland with their families and pets and enjoy picnics and adventures for the children. Of course, they can do all this and still be within close range of an ice cream, and it’s even close enough for a lunch break stroll. Chris Posgate concluded, “Our residential development is named after an old 19th century stone windmill, the ruins of which stand immediately to the east of the site and just south of the wood on one of the public footpaths. We shall be clearing away the brambles and ivy that festoon it and making it safe for everyone to enjoy.

What’s hot… and what’s not!

W

e often talk about trends in gardening, but unlike in clothing fashion, they tend to move more slowly. In fact, I reckon it takes around 10 years for a significant change to happen, and many of these stem (pardon the pun) from just a few sources. New trends begin with wild ideas from our top designers at flower shows like Chelsea and Hampton Court. These are then picked up by television and other media and slowly trickle down the chain into DIY stores and garden centres, where you and I can use them in our own gardens. By the time this process has happened, it’s normally a couple of years down the line. Take the ‘Barley Wood blue’ phenomenon for example. This paint colour was used extensively in the 90’s by a popular TV makeover show, and then once available in DIY stores, it was sloshed onto the fences of every ‘trendy’ garden. Thankfully things are now a little more subtle, with muted tones being the favoured choice, although I think it is fun to indulge in a few bright colours now and then (like my ‘loganberry’ rendered garden walls at home!). If you want to be bang on trend this year, then it’s great news, as not too much effort is required. With the opening of the new parkland and gardens surrounding the Olympic stadium setting the trend, you can’t go wrong in 2012 with a few weeds! No, I’m not kidding, but to be more accurate

and fair to the fabulous landscape architects who designed it, weeds are actually just plants growing in the wrong place, so in this instance they are wild flowers (how much nicer do they sound now!) Native insects love the natural open blooms which wild flowers provide, and they have a very calming element for humans too. So if you’re up for a change next summer, and want to be bang on trend, ditch the grass, rotate the soil and sow yourself a wild flower meadow. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo of wild flowers: Dave Rogers (flickr)

Jobs to do this month: Tulips can now be lifted and stored in a cool dry place. Replant in November. Bedding plants can now be planted up in hanging baskets, tubs and containers. Tender perennials such as Dahlias and Salvias can also be planted out as all risk of frost should have now gone. Sow fast maturing crops such as radish, lettuce and spinach at weekly intervals to ensure a succession of crops. Ensure the greenhouse doors are left open during the day to give maximum ventilation, and on really hot days you’ll need to water morning and night.

“Saddle up for Air Ambulance Bike Ride” says rescued cyclist

A

Loxwood man rescued by Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance has appealed for fellow cyclists to join a fundraising bike ride in aid of the life-saving charity this summer. Dave Dore, 54, was riding along the Downs with his partner Linda Luckin when he suffered a heart attack in June, 2010. A surgeon who lived nearby went to his aid before he was airlifted to a local A&E hospital. He underwent an operation to remove a blockage in his arteries. (Dave’s full story can be found at www.kssairambulance.org.uk.) Although not fit enough to take part himself, Dave has now urged other cyclists to take part in the Air Ambulance’s Double 100 Bike Challenge on 10th June. He said, “The helicopters are often called to injured cyclists so this is a great way of saying thank you to their crews. A team of the helicopters’ crew members will be taking part so I would encourage the public to join them and help raise essential funds. “I’m not up to a 100-miler yet but I

am a lot stronger and riding again. The trips are slowly getting longer and faster so all is good.” More than 80 riders joined last year’s inaugural Double 100 and organisers are aiming to at least double the number this year. The ride will start and finish at the Surrey and Sussex helicopter base at Dunsfold Park near Loxwood – home of BBC’s Top Gear. Cyclists will set off on either a 100-mile or 100km route which takes in all four counties covered by the Air Ambulance. All entrants must pay a registration fee of £25 and a minimum sponsorship will be required. New parapets at Loxwood High Street Canal Bridge

T

he Loxwood Society and the Wey & Arun Canal Trust are very pleased to announce that work has started to construct brickfaced parapets on the Loxwood High Street Canal Bridge. Working with representatives of Loxwood Parish Council and Loxwood Society in a joint ‘Loxwood Bridge Committee’, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust agreed an acceptable design for the parapets. After much work with both West Sussex County Council (WSCC) and Chichester District Council (CDC), the brick-faced design was approved. The original galvanised design had attracted hundreds of protests on a petition at Loxwood Stores and at a subsequent public meeting. The new brick parapets will be lower and less obtrusive than the previous metal fence and will be in keeping with the awardwinning Loxwood Lock and horse-bridge constructed by Canal Trust volunteers in 2005-6. A great fundraising effort led by the Loxwood Society and the Canal Trust resulted in a decision to award a contract to Concept Building Services of Midhurst and work started on 10th April, with completion expected by early June. The fundraising team is grateful to the NatWest Community Force grants scheme, Chichester Community Chest, Billingshurst Lions and to individual Canal Trust members for some exceptionally generous contributions. others helped by symbolically ‘buying a brick’ or buying tickets for one of the special canal cruises organised by Loxwood Society or generously responding to one of its appeals. Commenting for the Loxwood Society, Len Milsom (co-chair) said “I praise the way WACT and the village have worked over three patient years to improve the appearance of the canal bridge BUT don’t forget we’re still fund-raising. We have a Quiz Cruise with a Barbecue on Friday 8th June at 6pm. Please come, your support is essential. Just ring (01403) 752032 for tickets. Commenting for WACT, Sally Schupke (Chairman) said “The Canal Trust was determined to work with the Loxwood community to solve the problem of the unattractive metal bridge parapets. We have been through a long and patient process to identify the preferred design, obtain planning permission, raise funds and reach a legal agreement with West Sussex County Council. “We would like the people of Loxwood and the surrounding area to be as proud of the restored canal as we in the Canal Trust are. The start of work on the new parapets is a great day for all who have contributed their time or money; we are especially grateful to Len Milsom of Loxwood Society for leading the local fundraising effort.” Sally Schupke

Harriet’s Story Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

H

arriet lived on a farm somewhere in West Sussex with several geese and some call ducks. At one time there had been more chickens on the farm with her, but one by one they disappeared until she was the only one left. All by herself she laid an egg or two, scratched in the dirt and kept an eye out for the foxes. The ducks and geese wouldn’t have anything to do with her and pushed her away if she got close to them. She felt very lonely and longed for some chicken friends to chat to and keep each other warm during the long cold nights. One day last July, (she would always remember that day because her life changed like she had never imagined) two men came to the farm and started to take things away and clearing out the barn. She heard them talking to one another as they worked. Ouch! “I reckon Beth’ll take the ducks and Vera would like the geese but what will we do with that old chicken there?” asked one. “Not sure, but if we ask Beth, she’s got lots of chickens, she might take the old girl,” replied the other. Harriet realised they were talking about HER, and she was very cross indeed. Old girl! Her! How dare they! Just because she had a grey feather or two didn’t mean she was old. She strutted as majestically as she could with her head in the air past the two men, and they laughed. “I reckon she knew what we were saying about her,” said the first one who she found out was called Bill. The other man just laughed again. Then they went home. The next day, Bill and the other man came back. They put all the ducks and Harriet in a box and took them in a smelly truck to a new farm place. All the ducks and Harriet were let out and Harriet could hardly believe her eyes. There were other chickens there and she rushed to meet them. And they rushed to meet her too! All of a sudden she was surrounded by chickens, not hens like herself, but cockerels all wanting to make her acquaintance. They crowed and flapped their wings, pushed each other around and shouted at one another. “She’s mine!” said one. “No! I saw her first!”

34

“No, let me see her!” “Get out of my way!” Poor Harriet, she got pushed and shoved around while the cockerels were arguing. Now all she wanted to do was to find a place to hide. Beth came onto the scene and said to Bill, “This is not a good idea. This old chicken will be killed if we don’t get her away from these guys.” So she and Bill caught Harriet and put her by herself in a small cage. Harriet felt much safer there but she realised she was all alone again. She spent a lonely and miserable night. Morning dawned and the roosters crowed and strutted. Harriet watched forlornly. What she didn’t know was that Beth had asked Sally who in turn had asked Anne if Harriet could come and live at her farm with Blackie, Cola, Misty, Ashley and of course Goldie and Brownie who you will remember from last July’s Village Tweet. Anne of course said “Yes”. So, later that morning, Sally and Beth brought Harriet over to the small farm near Billingshurst. At first Harriet had to go into a small cage, but it wasn’t long before she managed to get out and meet the girls. All except the grey ones were very friendly and respectful. Anne threatened the grey girls and reminded them about bullying again, so they stood back too and respected Harriet. Harriet could come and go as she pleased in the big chicken run and always found a nice comfy bed of hay to sleep in at night. The food was lovely too and lots of it. People would come two or three times a day to check it was full. Gradually Harriet got used to Anne and Sally and the children who sometimes came. The other chickens were ever so friendly, and they loved hearing stories about her travels and adventures. After a little while Harriet felt at home and to celebrate laid an egg and was so proud of it. Anne told her what a clever girl she was and called her ‘Queen Harriet’. Every night Harriet was so glad that she had found her way to this small farm near Billingshurst and would smile a rather chickeney smile as she went to sleep. Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

How To Secure Your Wireless Network More sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas

I

t’s not hard to make your wireless network safe against nearly everything. If you follow two simple steps you’ll be effectively protected against just about all attacks. You are most likely safe anyway as the wireless signal only extends a few meters beyond your home. But inquisitive neighbours or curious passers-by that know what to look for might try to connect to your network. The two things that would identify your wireless network as an easy target are its name and the lack of any password (encryption security) on it. Every wireless network has a name. That’s set by your wireless router, the box that plugs into your broadband connection or phone line and converts it to radio signals. When you turn it on for the first time it’ll have the name that the manufacturers gave it usually the name of the maker itself Linksys, Netgear and so on. Hackers know that if a wireless network has one of these names, then the chances are that the owner hasn’t bothered to change any of the standard settings and since they know exactly what to do with those standard settings, this makes it a tempting target. Change the name, and you’ll put them off immediately. Unfortunately, every make of wireless router has a different way of changing its

name. The jargon for the name of a wireless network is SSID, and if you look that up in the index of the manual that came with your router, normally on a CD these days, you’ll find the instructions on how to change it. Alternatively, for instructions type the make and number of your router plus ‘change SSID’ into an internet search engine. The other thing you need to do is to set the encryption key. This jumbles up the signal so it can’t be easily decoded, and prevents anyone who doesn’t know the key from connecting to your network. The key can be a bit daunting to set up as there are a few to choose from normally you will see an option to set a WEP key or WPA or WPA2 key. WPA/2 is the one to choose as this is more secure than WEP. To set one up, you’ll have to enable encryption and type in a code, the instructions that come with your router will tell you how to do both. You then need to go around to every device that connects to your wireless network and get it to connect to the network name you have set and enter the code when requested. By doing the above you will secure your wireless network from uninvited connections. Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk)

Laptop Rescue at One Stop Computer Store!

M

any of you will have seen the smoke, heard the fire engines and read the local reports of the serious roof fire in a house in Station Road recently. Fortunately, the family escaped unharmed. Later that day we got a chance to see for ourselves the serious damage the fire had wrought when we received their charred and half-melted laptop. It contained important data, which the owner was desperate to recover. We are used to getting requests for computer health checks and general repairs. Fire damage was a new one for us and this one was in such a terrible state, it looked like a hopeless case. However, we are always happy to help and pride ourselves on our customer service. So we promised to have a look… Thankfully we managed to prise open the back of the machine and extract the hard drive. Once we’d dried it out, it was possible to retrieve the data using our workshop PC. The result: one very relieved customer – something that always makes us happy!

We are new to the village, so do drop in and see us sometime. You can’t miss us – we’re right next to Budgens. Rodger Smith

Equine

Laminitis

L

aminitis is a crippling disorder that takes weeks or even months for the horse to recover from. It can be permanently debilitating if not dealt with properly and promptly, leading to much pain and suffering for the horse. Laminitis is the inflammation of the laminae in the hoof. The laminae are the connections that attach the pedal bone to the inner hoof wall, holding the foot together. Chronic inflammation over time, or a catastrophic laminitis episode, will lead to degeneration of the blood vessels that feed the laminae and necrosis of the laminae themselves. This breakdown of the laminae results in the pedal bone separating from the hoof wall and ‘rotating’. In very advanced cases, it is possible for the entire hoof to slough off, or the pedal bone to penetrate the sole of the foot. Symptoms of laminitis include excessive heat in the feet, a bounding digital pulse, the horse standing with most of its weight on its heels often with its hind feet tucked underneath to take the weight off its forefeet, difficulty turning, and a stiff, pottery gait. IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR HORSE OR PONY HAS LAMINITIS CALL YOUR VET. LAMINITIS IS AN EMERGENCY, THE SOONER IT IS DIAGNOSED AND TREATED THE MORE CHANCE THERE IS OF A FULL RECOVERY. Most laminitis cases are preventable, as they are related to the horse’s diet. Grain overload and too much pasture are very common culprits. Grain products are very high in sugar and starch content, and pasture can fluctuate from moderate to high sugar levels. Starch is also believed to be a culprit in triggering an attack of laminitis. Horses find starch hard to digest and an overflow of starch to the hind gut is believed to upset the microbial balance causing death of the good bacteria and toxins being released into the bloodstream leading to laminitis. Laminitis can also be caused by other factors such as complications after foaling, severe concussion on hard surfaces – driving horses can be prone to this. Hormonal laminitis is often a side effect of Cushings disease, steroid treatment has been known to bring on an attack of laminitis in susceptible animals. Also horses recovering from leg injuries can get laminitis due to excessive weight bearing on the sound limbs. Stress can be a factor in a laminitis attack, but by

38

far the most common reason is obesity. Good routine management will also help to prevent the onset of Laminitis… •  Use a weigh tape* on a weekly basis to keep an eye on weight gain. • Keep a regular exercise routine. Lots of brisk walking will keep the pounds at bay! • Feed your horse a high fibre, low starch diet, feeding according to workload. • Use electric fencing or grazing muzzles to restrict your horse’s grass intake. Never be tempted to starve a Laminitic horse. This could lead to a condition known as Hyperlypanemia which can lead to severe liver failure and mortality. Remember: Any horse or pony can get Laminitis, not just little ponies on lush grass! Don’t be tempted to overfeed your horse for showing condition. Good ‘top line’ comes from work and muscle, NOT fat. If your horse is overweight you will need to restrict its feed intake to 1.5% of its body weight. For example: In a 500kg horse this will mean 7.5kg of feed per day – preferably a fibre based diet. Add a vitamin or mineral supplement*, or a feed balancer* to help to balance the ration. Feed your horse hay from hay nets with smaller holes. This will make the hay last longer and help to keep the horse occupied. Use good quality oat or barley straw to keep up fibre intake yet lower the calories the horse consumes. Turning out in a grazing muzzle is also beneficial as this keeps the horse moving and therefore uses up more calories! Soaking the hay for up to 12 hours prior to feeding has also been shown to reduce the amount of water soluble carbohydrates in the ration. ry A great deal of research is still ongoing le d into Laminitis. The Equine Species John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

have had the good fortune over many, many years to become acquainted with a wonderful collection of farm animals. I have grown to love and respect their various ways of dealing with us humans, and enjoyed the success I have had in the friendships with them over their lives on the farm. That is perhaps with one exception. The horse. Please don’t get me wrong, I love the creatures. They have beauty and grace, stateliness and elegance. What they do lack is sympathy – for me! The first horse I ever encountered was at college. A magnificent shire who towered over us students and whose demeanour towards our efforts to control his movements can only, at best, be described as condescending. His job was to pull the mangle and dung cart around the estate. A job that really was far beneath the dignity of such a proud creature, but he suffered it with the patience that his breed has endured since their hey-day as knights’ chargers. He would stand with one hoof poised with just its tip touching the ground as we loaded his cart, and then as we patted his huge withers to move him on to the next clamp he would turn his great head and, delicately as a dowager duchess eating her cucumber sandwich, lower the resting leg and enormous hoof down on anyone’s foot who was foolish enough to stand close to him. We knew it would happen, and yet time and again we fell for it. He would then stand with complete indifference to the yelling and slapping of his broad side as the sufferer tried to shift well over a ton of flesh off his wellie. Luckily the old boy never put his full weight down and we suspected that he enjoyed the fun as much as all of us did. In fact it became part of the initiation into farming to suffer the ‘old boys hoof’. It was some 20 years or so later, that I was again to come in contact with our equine friends… My children had expressed a longing to learn to ride, and a kind lady in the village offered to

40

teach them. As it looked fun I foolishly went along to watch. So when it was ventured that I could have a go, I duly climbed aboard. (There can be no other description of my method of getting saddled than that.) Around the deeply bedded ring I rode, and was smitten. Then followed several weeks of learning the art of horsemanship – or so I thought… Come the day we arrived at the stable to be informed that the mare I usually rode was lame. “Not to worry,” I was told. ‘“You can ride my friend’s mare, she’s lovely.” Out to the paddock we walked the creature. One foot in the stirrup and up and over. For all of a minute she stood peaceful and submissive. Then all hell broke loose… What no one knew was that she had never been ridden by a man before, and certainly not by a complete pratt like me. Off she went. Mainly up and down as far as I can recall. Wild Bill Hickock would have been impressed. As she went up I came down, with bone shaking rapidity. I stood… No, I endured it for thirty seconds and then bailed out. The expression on my children’s faces as they watched this impromptu performance was a mixture of first great fun and then complete horror. Pulling my boots off a little later I found the pain emanating from my nether regions quite exquisite, and the journey home explained to me exactly why cowboys walk in that tunnel legged fashion. The next morning the damage was plain to see. From my stomach to my ankles was a delightful shade of gun-metal blue/black. “Doctors” came the instruction as I hobbled into the kitchen in a search for sympathy. So off to the surgery I made my painful way. I shouldn’t have bothered… Dear old Dr Bell looked with undisguised amusement at my predicament as I stood before him with trousers at half-mast, and smiling up at me from his swivel chair uttered the words that I can still hear ringing in my ears. “What’s up lad? Squashed your b**ls?” Horses – I love ’em! Just keep them on the other side of the fence, that’s all! John Nash Cartoon: Thelwell

Billingshurst Choral Society

I

n January 1986 a small group of keen singers got together and Billingshurst Choral Society (BCS) was founded by Musical Director George Jones. Since then it has grown in number, experience, and ability and now performs a varied and wide range of works internationally. George continues to stretch the choir’s capability. BCS performs three major concerts annually: in Billingshurst, or in the Cathedrals of Arundel (see photo) and Chichester. They are regularly invited to sing in special and charity performances, which have taken them overseas and throughout the UK. These include premiere US performances in the Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Centre in New York; taking part in the re-opening weekend of the Royal Festival Hall, London and also performing in the Royal Gala Concert in the presence of HM The Queen, singing in the De Montfort Hall with the Leicester Philharmonic

42

Choir, and most recently, participating in the Brandenburg Spring Festival in the Kings College Chapel, London. Their overseas tours include performances in France, Belgium and Prague. Next year it’s a tour of Tuscany and performing the UK premiere of Kleiberg’s Requiem as part of the Brighton Festival. Their current challenge is learning Swahili, Akan, Xhosa, Shona and Zulu for their next concert on 7th July 2012 at Billingshurst Leisure Centre at 7pm. The programme includes ‘Zimbe!’ (‘Come, Sing the Songs of Africa’) by Alexander L’Estrange and Bob Chilcott’s ‘A Little Jazz Mass’. BCS is a friendly group and has a mixed age range. The rehearsals take place on Tuesdays in St Mary’s Church, 7.45 for 8pm start. For more information on BCS call David Eckford (01273) 845157 or visit www.billingshurstchoralsociety.org
