t’s June which of course means it’s Show Time! Yes, the annual Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession hits the streets (and recreation ground!) on 29th June. Full details can be found on page 8. As usual, the report of the show will follow in the August issue (the Show is at the end of June so a July report is impossible). June also means it’s Fathers’ Day (or, if you prefer, Father’s Day – there are two schools of thought on where the apostrophe should go!). Fathers’ Day was created to complement Mothers’ Day around 100 years ago in America. Do try and make 15th June a special day for your father. Food and drink / Fathers’ Day

Healthy Asian Chicken Wings They taste so naughty but they’re not!

Preparation time: 10 mins plus 30 mins marinating. Cooking time: 45 minutes. Makes 8-16 wings

METHOD

1. First make the marinade. Mix the ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sugar and sake or cooking sherry in a bowl. Marinate the chicken wings in this sauce for at least 30 minutes. Make sure all wings are coated and turn a couple of times during the marinating process. 2. Preheat oven to 200°C/Gas Mark 6. Cover a large tray with baking parchment. Place the flour into a shallow bowl then drain the wings of the marinade. Dip each wing carefully into the flour, shake off any excess then place the wings on the prepared tray. 3. Bake skin side up for 15 minutes. Then turn the wings over so that the skin side is down and bake for another 15 minutes. Finally turn skin side up again and bake for a final 15 minutes to make sure they are crispy. 4. Serve with salad on a bed of lettuce leaves.

ost dads will receive a Fathers’ Day card on 15th June, but how many of them know just how important their role in the family is? Scientists are increasingly realising just how much dads matter. Children who feel loved by their father tend to have a greater sense of well-being, happiness and life satisfaction than those who feel loved by their mother alone. Dads may also be responsible for endowing their child with the ‘stick-with-it-ness’ that will serve them well throughout their life. University researchers found that a dad’s parenting style is more closely linked to whether teens will exhibit persistence than mum’s parenting. A persistent personality, in turn, was related to less delinquency and more engagement in school over time. Fathers who are most effective at this are those who listen to their children, have a close relationship, set appropriate rules, but also grant appropriate freedoms. Quality time with dad is really important too. It doesn’t have to be an expensive holiday or day trip – simply playing football in the back garden or watching a film together is fine. What’s important is that dad is there and fully engaged. So dads, why not use this Fathers’ day to get out, take the children to the park and just enjoy being with your family. Sarah Davey

Beautiful food in beautiful surroundings – Village Tweet visits The Café by The Lake

‘C

ome and try a home cooked meal in beautiful surroundings’ says the ad. So, one Tuesday in early May my partner Angela and I called in at The Café by The Lake at Sumners Ponds to do just that… If you haven’t visited Sumners for a while you will be pleasantly surprised at the expansion of the café/restaurant area. The office and shop has been relocated in a new building allowing the café to expand into the old one. The result is a spacious yet cosy candle-lit area which is far from gloomy as, at this time of year, evening sunlight streams in through large windows, giving a wonderful view over the picturesque lake, a vista no other restaurant in the area can compete with. And, if it is warm you can of course eat al fresco. Ah, yes, the food… the new menu caters for all tastes with vegetarian and children’s options. There is also a Specials board. To start I chose deep-fried breaded brie with a delectable orange dressing. Sometimes this deep-fried brie can taste like eating a chunk of

cheese with very little cooking involved; but this was melt-in-the-mouth gorgeous. Angela opted for pork, apple and rosemary terrine with chutney which really did look and taste home-made. Being a sucker for duck I couldn’t resist duck breast for my main course which was served with crispy bacon, an apple and rosemary purée, a copious selection of vegetables and a superb port and orange sauce which was full of flavour. Angela chose a perfectly cooked pan-fried salmon. I rounded the meal off with a crème brûlée which was exactly as the name suggests: burnt cream. (Yes, it does sound better in French!) The top caramel was a wonderful sweet hard layer covering the cool creamy custard base. Yummy! Prices are very reasonable, the staff friendly and attentive and new chef Yann is highly talented. Poppy Appeal ‘Thank You Evening’

ach year the nation shows its support for the work of The Royal British Legion through the Poppy Appeal. Every poppy helps us to support the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families. Billingshurst’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal ‘Thank You Evening’ was held on Tuesday 29th April. Members and Friends gathered at Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green. Royal British Legion Sussex County Chairman, Mr Les Coppard, and the West Sussex Poppy Appeal Organiser, Mr Ray Bradley, presented certificates and awards to Poppy Appeal Collectors in the Fishers Farm Theatre, followed by supper served in the Restaurant and Bar. Colin Banks, Billingshurst Branch President and Chairman stated, “This is an important event in the Calendar for the Branch and would not be

possible without the support of the Fishers Farm team, the Executive Officers, Members and Friends. This has become a popular event and this year the support has been extremely good. We are constantly reminded of the need to continue raising monies for the Poppy Appeal. Billingshurst & District Lions Club is 40 years old

illingshurst Lions club was formed in November 1973 with three of the ‘Charter’ members still active today within the Club which has a current membership of 25. The first fund-raising event was Christmas Carols and in excess of £50,000 has been raised this way to date. Further fund-raising was done with the Caledonian Market that was run for over 20 years. It was replaced initially by a beer festival and for the last four years by a golf day which has raised funds for specific local charities – this year it will be in aid of The Mary How Trust. For many years funds were raised by selling secondhand books from stalls in Jengers Mead and in 2002 the Club decided to take on its own shop. Total sales of secondhand books are now approaching £500,000 and sales remain buoyant as we continue to open six days a week in Jengers Mead. Lions Clubs International’s motto is ‘We Serve’ and the club has been doing just that since its inception. The first major service activity was at the Dedisham Autistic Children’s Home where we built an outside play and cycling area. This was followed by a project to clear ponds of vegetation at an old people’s home in Barns Green. Roofing was a major activity in the early years with both the Slinfold Scout HQ and Dauxwood Play Group building being reroofed. This was followed by a new roof being put on the cottage in the Women’s Hall, Mothers Garden (see photograph). More recently we have provided further support for the Hall by enabling play equipment to be replaced and by redecorating the Hall. A previous redecorating project was at Longfields, now Longfield Manor. Other service activities that have been undertaken include helping at the Billingshurst Show, the Fireworks Display and the village’s Remembrance Day Parade. Senior Citizens have had their wine provided at their Christmas Lunches and recently the Club has run a New Year tea party for them as well as taking groups to the theatre in Horsham. For many years Christmas

parcels have been provided to needy families. The Club continues to run bingo sessions on the first Friday of the month in St. Gabriel’s Hall. With the funds raised the Club has an impressive record of supporting the local community financially. This has been groups, individuals, medical practices or schools. Groups helped over the years have included the Scouts and Guides, churches, youth clubs and junior cricket and football teams. All the medical practices in our district have benefited with the purchase of specialist equipment not generally available. Many individuals have been helped over the years including a number of children with life limiting illnesses. For a number of years the Club has worked closely with all ten local primary schools. We run an annual ‘Peace Poster’ art competition. We have given every child a free book, helped fund outdoor learning and literacy programmes, supported teachers by providing life skill lesson plans covering drugs, alcohol, smoking and bereavement. We have also involved the children and parents in supporting schools and orphanages in Belarus. However, it’s far from being all work and no play as the Club has a full and varied social life involving members and their spouses. Activities include walks, quizzes, meals out and Club holidays. The Club is always looking to recruit like-minded individuals who would like to join an active, friendly club as we look forward to the next 40 years! So come and join us. A Good Read Billingshurst Author Signs Publishing Deal

illingshurst mum Juliet West has achieved a lifelong ambition with the publication of her debut novel, Before the Fall. The book, which is set in London during the First World War, was published on 22nd May and has received glowing reviews from bestselling authors. Booker Prize-longlisted author Alison MacLeod has praised the novel as “powerful and poignant”, while US novelist Ann Weisgarber described the book as “an astonishing literary achievement”. Inspired by real events, the book tells the story of Hannah Loxwood, a young soldier’s wife who falls in love with another man while her husband is away fighting. Juliet first came across the heartbreaking true story nearly eighteen years ago while working as a journalist in London. In 2010 she finally sat down to write the novel, and says she was “amazed and delighted” when publisher Pan

Macmillan offered her a book deal. “I’m an avid reader and always dreamt of writing fiction,” says Juliet. “But I found it hard to get started, so I joined Horsham Writers’ Circle for inspiration and advice, and later took an MA in Creative Writing at Chichester University.” She adds, “Writing the first draft of Before the Fall was a real challenge – it was a huge time investment with absolutely no guarantee that the book would be published. But I kept going because I wanted so much to tell Hannah’s story. It has haunted me for many, many years, so I was determined to write the book, even if no-one ever read it!’ Juliet, who has lived in Billingshurst since 1999, is married with three children. She has signed a twobook deal with Pan Macmillan and is now busy working on her second novel. Walkers invited to ‘Poddle’ for charity

alkers are invited to explore some new paths through Surrey and help raise funds to restore the Wey & Arun Canal with the 42nd annual ‘Poddle’ sponsored walk on Sunday, 8th June. One of the highlights of the walk will be the new riverside path created by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust along the banks of the Cranleigh Waters in Shalford. This new path, built by volunteers, winds its way from Shalford towards Bramley and takes in part of what will be the new Hunt Nature Park. The walk starts from the National Trust’s 18th century waterwheel, Shalford Mill, situated in the village of Shalford near Guildford. The circular walk will cover twelve miles and includes refreshment points and a lunch stop before finishing at Shalford church. There is also an option for a shorter afternoon walk, starting from Shalford Church, for those that feel less energetic. This is aimed at families and will be four miles long and start from 2pm onwards. The morning route will take walkers to the top of St Martha’s Hill before descending to the Downs Link in Blackheath and along the Cranleigh Waters back to Stonebridge in Shalford. After crossing the A281 there is a good view of Gun’s Mouth Island before the last section along the River Wey to Shalford church for lunch.

The afternoon walk is relatively flat and is much shorter, taking walkers through Shalford Park to the North Downs Way, then to Polsted Manor and back through Loseley Park to the Wey Navigation. The walk crosses the River Wey at St Catherine’s Lock. Anyone wanting to join the longer walk, which will be signposted and with a map provided, should arrive between 9 and 10.30am. Walkers opting for the shorter route should arrive at the church between 1 and 2pm before setting out. An Evening with Sewing Bee Star is a huge success

illingshurst Primary School’s main hall was full to capacity for a very special event on 30th April. Over 150 people saw the ad in last month’s Village Tweet and came along to meet Lynda Lewis, Billingshurst Primary School’s very own Sewing Bee star. The event, ‘An Evening with Lynda Lewis’, follows Lynda’s triumph on BBC2’s The Great British Sewing Bee and in response to the number of enquiries and questions she’s had from fans across the South of England. Sponsored by Kavanagh’s Budgens and Pfaff, the evening proved to be a huge success, raising over £1,500 for Billingshurst Primary School’s Outdoor Project and to fund the running of Lynda’s new after school craft club for the pupils, to inspire the next generation of mini sewing bees! Those lucky enough to get tickets were treated to an exclusive viewing of the winning garments of the week and Lynda’s personal experience of the making of The Great British Sewing Bee, as well as some very practical tips on sewing. Lynda’s interpreter from the programme, Helen Hamston, was also on hand to support Lynda and to help interpret to the audience. The question and answer session revealed that Lynda’s desert island essentials would be electricity, wi-fi and Patrick Grant, a judge on the programme! Following the discussion, guests took part in a silent

auction to win afternoon tea, a private sewing lesson and two ties made by Lynda for the event. Funds were also boosted by a raffle with prizes donated by the Cloth Store in Horsham, In the Making and Katinka Designs. Headteacher Helen Williamson commented, “We are very proud of Lynda for inspiring so many people beyond the school and for her tireless efforts to help our children benefit from her talent. It was a lovely evening, Lynda doesn’t realise what a star she is.” After the event, Lynda touchingly tweeted, “My highlight was finding out that a young schoolgirl won the silent auction for an hour’s sewing lesson with me.” The evening was attended by Morgan Rees, Store Manager from Kavanagh’s Budgens, and Jan Wright, Sales Educator from Pfaff, who presented Lynda with a Janome Overlocker; a machine which is highly prized by Lynda. Janome also donated two sewing machines for the School’s craft club. As for Lynda’s next steps, despite the huge amount of interest around her, she has no plans to run workshops as sewing will always be her hobby and teaching children is her passion. Celebrating Young Arts

he charitable arts organisation, National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts (NADFAS), makes a widely acknowledged and valuable contribution to The Arts through its focus on education and conservation. NADFAS launched its Young Arts programme in 1973 specifically to provide exciting opportunities for young people, in order to broaden their horizons through their involvement in, and experience of, the creative and visual arts. NADFAS encourages its member societies to provide Young Arts programmes, either by offering fully or part-funded projects. In 2013 NADFAS Young Arts funded activities involving over 20,000 children and young people, and offered grants and funding in excess of ÂŁ162,000 across the UK. In the recent past West Sussex Society of Decorative Arts and Fine Arts supported projects at both Coldwaltham and Amberley schools in the creation of A Tree of Life designed by the pupils and fashioned in wrought iron by a local blacksmith (see photo). We contribute to the support of a mature student at West Dean, enabling her to complete an MA in furniture restoration. This summer we are joint sponsors for a theatre event at The Petworth

Festival, Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Marvellous Medicine, performed by Illyria Theatre Company, in Bignor Park on 27th July. We have recently facilitated the selection of two outstanding works of art by students from Farlington School for The RBA Spring Exhibition at The Mall Gallery London, and in July we embark on a two-day residency focusing on painting with artist Katie Sollohub, at The Weald School, for A level Art students and their teachers. We are committed to raising an awareness of the arts and enriching the education and creativity of young people and so enhancing their lives through the creative arts. The Balance of Nature John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

guess that it’s about time I tackled that thorny question of the countryside that divides so many people’s opinions. I refer to the Hunt and the Cull. As a long serving ‘countryman’ myself I have had my own thoughts on this subject change as the years have gone by, and I still have a personal battle when thinking of the pros and cons of the use of the gun and the hound in country pursuits. I have tried here to gather my own views on the creatures that inhabit the same territory that I do, and their role in the wonderful diversity that our countryside brings to those who take the time to stand and watch. You may not agree with some of what I at present have come to believe, but please know that I give my reasons with all honesty for the protection of our fauna that we so need to cosset. Top of the list are the fox and the badger. I disregard the deer here as, although I think there may be sound reasons to cull these using professional stalkers as herds get too large, I do feel that in general they present a very limited problem to the general public. With the first two though, there will always be one great issue. They have no natural predator other than man to control their numbers. Both were culled heavily by the farmer and the hunter in days gone by. The badger was a mysterious beast, rarely seen by even those who lived near their setts. Now we often see as many badgers that have met their end on the roadway as we do the lowly rabbit. The fox in his turn has expanded into the urban environment where the pickings are easier and the shelter more available. So it is obvious that both have lost a great deal of their fear of man and although Brock still keeps mainly to the night time, Reynard is quite prepared to venture out in the sunshine in populated areas now. What has changed so much in my lifetime to make this dramatic alteration in behaviour? Surely one of the greatest must be the amount of folk working on the land now as opposed to long ago. When I first set foot on a farm 15% of the country’s workforce worked the land. Now it’s just 2%. A goodly proportion of those men had a gun beside the kitchen range to keep the larder going. Pigeon pie and rabbit stew helped many a family through the winter months. Most had a few chickens in the garden and only the most foolish fox came near any habitation if he wanted to keep breathing. Yes, there was the Hunt and the Gamekeeper who also

kept the numbers down and probably only the quick, wise and healthiest survived to grow to old age. Even the magpie and the jay kept themselves safely hidden in the woodland so their notorious habit of egg stealing was confined to those areas and not to the garden birds. Now, they too are a common sight in many gardens. The badger and its association with the problem of TB is causing huge debate over the country, and whatever your perspective on the pros and cons of the cull it still seems a great shame that this beautiful animal has become such a bone of contention between those who are caught in the middle of this dilemma. I hope that sooner rather than later the problems of vaccination will be overcome, and a suitable programme can be put in place to protect our farms from the continued threat of this terrible disease and a proper census put in place to keep tabs on the population actually out there. As I understand it at present, there is a good idea of the numbers of setts around the country, but little idea of the family numbers that inhabit them. So, as to what a stable population of them might be is still down to guesswork as far as I can see. Whether the badger is partly to blame for the decline of the hedgehog may carry some weight though. In urban areas the little prickly fellow seems to be doing fine, but in rural areas where the badger has more reign, he is becoming more difficult to find. I have not had one in my garden for a couple of years now; once they were a regular summer visitor. The badger is the one predator that has the means, with its long claws, of unrolling spiky for a tasty snack. The jury is still out on that though, but I suspect that he may well turn out to be one of the culprits. So, what’s to do? The reason our countryside has enjoyed such a wonderfully varied and glorious selection of creatures over so many centuries is that the numbers of each species has remained more or less in balance with the environment each has occupied. Now and then there has been – and always will be – fluctuations through weather, disease or loss of habitat. But on the whole we have lived together in relative peace and harmony. We are trying to halt the damage that we ourselves cause as much as we can, but I suspect that sometimes we still upset the equilibrium in another direction by our own misguided actions. All we can do is our best. To try to care for these lovely animals, to respect their existence and attempt to understand the balance that nature has fought so long to maintain. John Nash

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder

ambing is now over… ish. One ewe is refusing to give birth but now the weather has warmed up a bit we have decided that she can run with the others rather than be distressed on her own. Sadly ‘Stupid Stephen’ the bottle fed lamb pictured last month didn’t make it and he was getting weaker and weaker so we made a tough decision. We also had a dog attack and found one poor lamb with no shoulder left but still alive; some dog owners Young Lemon Pyle make my blood boil. A couple of Saddleback sows are due imminently and we need them to have largish litters so we can fulfil the backlog of orders – judging by their stomachs we should be OK! The remainder of the sows – including all the Middle Whites – aren’t due until after the 1st July so we will have a small gap in piglets. The pigs are now undergoing serious show-ring training and for the first time we will be entering a trio. This involves four handlers keeping three pigs walking in perfect line formation and one must be a boar.

The Middle Whites have taken to it quite well and are behaving beautifully. The Saddlebacks have one naughty girl in the ranks who keeps barking and running off like the wind! It’s usually the prick-eared breeds that are the spirited ones. What a bumper year for Brahma chicks we’ve been having, with a 90% hatch rate out of our sturdy old incubator. We also have some under a broody hen, I did try and get them from Brahma Cockerel under her but she swelled to triple her usual size and delivered well-aimed pecks. I have been invited to get involved in the Billingshurst Show this year and had a meeting with the Chairman, who showed me the plans and how he wishes to expand the livestock section. So Tedfold will be bringing pigs and goats or sheep. Also, the West Sussex Smallholders will be there with poultry for sale, plus Brinsbury and Fishers Farm will be bringing livestock, so please do come and say Hi. Swarms of Honey Bees BBKA gives guidance on what the public can do to help

espite greater awareness by the public of the huge contribution honey bees make to our food supplies through pollination, not to mention the honey they produce, a swarm of bees still has the propensity to scare. The public should not be alarmed if they see or come across a swarm of honeybees. They are doing what honeybees do naturally and are not remotely interested in humans. In fact before leaving their hive the bees fill up their stomachs with honey and are rather mellow; their sole intention is to find a new home to build-up a new colony. As long as the swarm is not provoked it will not do any harm but it is important that the bees are collected by an experienced beekeeper. If left to their own devices they may choose to set up home in the nearest convenient spot which could be a chimney or other inaccessible place. As soon honeybee colonies are big enough to run out of space in their hives they are likely to swarm. The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) urges members of the public to learn how to spot a honeybee swarm and to know what to do when they see one. Every swarm not collected by a beekeeper could mean the death of that colony. We need to gather all the swarms we can to build up bee colonies. Jane Moseley, BBKA General Secretary, gives some

advice: “Honeybees swarm as nature’s way of increasing the number of colonies. With honeybee numbers under threat we can ill afford to lose swarms. As long as it is safe and practicable, beekeepers are keen to collect them and give them a new home. Swarms left uncollected are unlikely to survive, which means lost honey production but even more importantly, fewer of these hard working insects to pollinate crops, including our favourite fruits and vegetables. “However, people often mistake groups of other types of bees or wasps for honeybees. Three out of four calls to the British Beekeepers’ Association are actually about wasps’ nests, bumblebee sightings, or other flying insects and not honeybees. The BBKA website has pictures and information to help people to determine if what they have seen is a swarm of honeybees or some other type of insect. How low can you grow?

ention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers… what’s to love? Associated with badly designed ’sixties rockeries, these lowgrowing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from waterlogged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the pot-bought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rockface way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads. Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal

when displayed at waist height, I realised how wonderful these tiny creations are. In recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot, dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free-draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp, with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stone wall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too. Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative

ave you walked past our Community Gardens in the village of Loxwood recently? If you have, you would probably have noticed our two new residents who have moved in to this tranquil garden in the centre of the village. These two beautifully carved Southdown sheep are proving to be a very popular attraction for young children and adults alike. The very young children are using them as seats and slides, just as it was intended. The sheep were carved using a chainsaw by the same artist who produced our beautiful totem pole that stands proudly in the middle of the garden. Since our organisation took over this neglected and overgrown plot of land in 2010, the area has been transformed into a community area that provides seating areas, raised beds for growing vegetables, a bug hotel, compost heaps, log circle, balance beams for young children surrounded by beautiful shrub borders that visually enhance the area as well as providing the type of plants that will encourage wildlife to flourish.

As well as this area in the middle of the village, we have also developed over the last five years, a fantastic orchard at North Hall. This is for the benefit of all the community which will provide many fruits, such as apples (especially old Sussex varieties), plums, pears, medlars, quince, cherry, greengage and damson. In the same area we have also developed a woodland haven for wildlife, which we now coppice on a regular basis to supply bean poles and pea sticks for the village as well as planting many more native trees and shrubs such as Black Poplar, Spindle, Gelder Rose, Oak, Ash and Hazel. To encourage people to use this area we have provided seating in the woodland and orchard and planted a living willow house that children can play in. Living with Laika – ‘Gardening!’

t last some dry days and my thoughts reluctantly turn to gardening. All that rain has certainly wreaked havoc outside, with the flowerbeds virtually indistinguishable from the turf both having been engulfed by an infestation of objectionable weeds – marauding weeds that fight their way up through gardening fabric designed to suppress the nasties. These are weeds that greet me on an annual basis waiting anxiously for the garden hoe and extermination. These are weeds that are descendants of those who inhabited this space where cows grazed, perhaps crops grew and where dog-walkers roamed! Yes, it was time to forage in my shed for the hoe, spade, mattock, rake and garden fork. Behold, buried beneath a plethora of garden chairs, bicycles, parasols, umbrellas and detritus from Mrs’s springclean indoors, the weapons of attack lay dirt encrusted and rusty slumped on the floor. What a shame I didn’t find time to clean them in the autumn! Laika is an enthusiastic help-mate and whilst I wield the mattock, turnover the soil and rake, she will dig feverishly alongside creating large holes into which she inserts her head collecting every new

scent. She thoroughly enjoys following the rake and will assist in extracting the weeds which she flaunts with a shake of her head. Time passes amicably and having her company, whilst not entirely useful, does ensure that the chores are done a little less stressfully. Grass cutting is a special time for Laika and a visit to my small garden store to extract the mower, produces a great deal of tail wagging and barking. She follows me up and down the turf, barking excitedly and occasionally seizing one of the front wheels to send the contraption off course. You’ll note that I haven’t used the word ‘Lawn’ as the areas of turf in our garden do not justify the name. Ours remains pitted, cratered and scarred rather than manicured following Laika’s initial fulsome attack when she was small. A recent visit to some friends in East Anglia showed us what could be done with proper training. They have two dogs that use a designated toilet area adjacent to their lawn. Appropriately hidden behind a neatly trimmed privet hedge, their pooches were able to modestly take a comfort break in complete privacy. Marvellous! Ron Myal

ooking after your horse’s legs is a vital part of horse ownership; as the old adage goes, “No foot, no horse”, the same can be said for the horse’s joints! Make it a part of your daily grooming routine to feel your horse’s joints to check for any unusual lumps, bumps heat or swelling. Joints are complex structures made up of bone, connective tissue, cartilage and synovial fluid, problems with any of these structures can lead to pain and lameness. So what can go wrong? Accidental injury is a common factor – horses are very good at hurting themselves, as any owner’s vet’s bills prove! Playing in the field can lead to kick injuries, sprains and strains, as well as accidents such as slips and falls while being ridden. Any horse that is found to be severely lame or unable to bear weight on a limb must be seen immediately by a vet. Another potentially very serious injury is a wound on or close to a joint – especially puncture wounds which can leave infection deep within a joint and have the potential to be life threatening, call your vet as an emergency as the joint may need a surgical flush as well as antibiotic therapy. Just as humans suffer wear and tear on their joints with advancing age so do horses. Arthritis is a common condition in many horses. It can vary from mild to severe, in fact many horses with mild to moderate arthritis can lead full and normal lives, just needing a little more care and attention to ground conditions, workload and allowing them more time to warm up for ridden work. Your vet will be the first port of call to diagnose the condition; this is often done by having the horse in for a full lameness work up which will include x-rays and nerve blocks. The vet will then discuss the next step of treatment, painkillers and NSAIDs (non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs) will often be prescribed. Injections of steroids and hyaluronic acid into the joints are also used as a treatment option. Some horses can cope well with very little medication and light exercise is often seen to be beneficial in keeping the horse moving. Bear in mind that arthritis is a progressive condition and will get worse as time goes on. It can affect just about any joint in the body, the most common forms include hock spavin, coffin joint arthritis, ringbone and kissing spines. Use of joint supplements has become very popular over

the last decade or so. There is much ongoing research into the effects of nutraceuticals in managing the condition. There are many joint supplements to choose from ranging from herbal mixes and tincture – devil’s claw being one of the most common, to omega oils and supplements containing glucosamine, chondriotin and HA (hyaluronic acid). As with any supplement you may need to try a few to find the one that works best for your horse. Many competition horses are given a joint supplement as part of their daily feed to help maintain joint integrity and ward off the effects of hard work. Read the label of any supplement carefully; the inclusion rate of key active ingredients can vary wildly from brand to brand. It is also worth checking to make sure your chosen product does not contain any banned substances if you compete under rules. Another problem to affect horses’ joints is osteochondrosis dessicans (OCD.) This condition is a developmental disease of foals and young stock caused by damaged areas of cartilage forming in the joints leaving the underlying bone structure weaker than nature intended; in some cases pieces of cartilage can break off and float around causing irritation, pain, swelling and lameness. The most common joints affected include the hocks, stifles and fetlocks. Any foal or youngster showing signs of swelling of the limbs or lameness should be seen by a vet. The symptoms of OCD can vary greatly from a subtle lameness to very visible swelling of a joint. Some horses show no symptoms at all and the problem is then picked up later in life during a lameness exam or a five-stage vetting. OCD is a relatively common disease and can affect all breeds. It can be caused by a number of factors including a youngster growing too fast, high-energy diets with a mineral imbalance, and trauma and concussion to the joints due to too much work too young. Billingshurst Fire Fighters – It’s Question Time!

irst of all, from everyone at Billingshurst Fire Station, we would like to say thank you to everyone who supported the car wash in March. We have now totted up the proceeds and the total is around £700 which is a great effort and we look forward to beating this on our next one due in September. When we hold visits and talk to our local community about fire safety we are often asked familiar questions: “How many fire-fighters are on station?” “How long does it take to respond to an emergency call?” “How much water does a fire engine carry?” Well, here are some answers! At present we have eight retained fire-fighters. This means we all have other jobs outside the fire service but give our time up to respond to fire calls. We all go through the same training as a full-time fire-fighter but we have to live or work within four minutes of the fire station. We are expected to be on the road and responding to an emergency within five minutes,

so that doesn’t give much time to drop what you are doing when your alerter goes off! Having been in the service for nearly six years, it’s still an adrenaline rush each time my alerter goes off as I don't know what I’ll be attending. The normal fire engine, which we call ‘the pump' (because effectively it’s just a big pump with wheels) holds 1,800 litres of water. If you were using this water aggressively it would only last around ten minutes so it’s very important we find a water supply on arrival to a fire; we mainly use roadside hydrants but we can also use ponds, lakes, rivers or even someone’s swimming pool if necessary! We have two recruits in the process of joining so hopefully in the next coming months I will be happily introducing them to you. Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

s you may or may not have twigged, ‘Gary’ in these stories is none other than the editor of this magazine. He has some strange habits but despite them Nanny loved him to bits. That is, until last month’s Tweet… Nanny was not very pleased with her photo in her story, especially when Julia from the Dog Club said very loudly, “I recognised your picture in the Tweet this month.” Considering that only her derrière was on display Nanny did not think that it would be very easy to recognise her. So she decided on a little payback – the pen being mightier than the sword… One of Gary’s hobbies is flying radiocontrolled model aircraft with little motors in them. Whenever the weather was calm enough, Gary would trot out to the middle of the big paddock and fly his ’planes. He had several different kinds, some would perform all sorts of fancy manoeuvres while others tootled around the sky looking for all the world like a full-size ’plane. Some were bigger than others but all of them were his pride and joy. He had even erected a windsock on the fence, but the winter storms quickly put paid to that. One evening as he did his ‘Biggles’ impersonation, a gust of wind caught his ’plane, (it’s never ‘pilot error’ of course) and it got caught in a huge oak tree in the nextdoor neighbour’s paddock. Gary went to investigate, climbing carefully over the rather saggy fence and being immediately accosted by the ponies in said paddock. Gary shooed them away with some trepidation, looked for his ’plane and spied it near the very top of the ‘plane magnet’ (as Gary called trees). It

was obvious he was not going to be able to get it down without some help. Consulting with the family it was decided that the best tree-climber was Izzie and she was willing to climb the tree and retrieve the ’plane. Bill and Sally would fend off the horses while Gary held a ladder steady for Izzie. Of course the whole family came to watch and cheer her on. Izzie had learned her tree climbing skills at the Big Hill near where Nanny and Grandad had their caravan. One day Nanny had taken the kids up to the Hill and they climbed trees. To Nanny’s consternation, Izzie had disappeared into the tree and emerged right at the top. Nanny was very nervous about it, but Izzie had done well. Now her talents were being displayed to all the family. She climbed the ladder and carefully reached up to the first branch. Up, up she went carefully placing her feet and arms so that the pace was steady and sure. Everyone had their heart in their mouth as she got higher and higher. Finally she couldn’t be seen at all. “Are you sure she’s alright?”, asked Anne anxiously. “Is my ’plane alright?” shouted Gary to Izzie! Finally a faint voice called from the heavens: “I’ve got it!” and then, “I’m coming down!” Slowly the girl and the ’plane emerged from the foliage. Everyone cheered, “Well done Izzie!” As she neared the ladder Gary climbed up and took the ’plane from her so she could get down more easily. As Izzie reached the ground, everyone congratulated her. At the same time the ponies came over too and put their heads, tails and selves into the mix. Bill and Sally pushed them away and soon everyone escaped back over the saggy fence to the little farm. Although Izzie had managed to get the ’plane down safely the crash investigator (Gary of course) deemed it too damaged to fly again. He was very sad, because it was just two flights short of its hundredth. BUT it did give him an excuse to buy another one which he did the very next day. his warning unfortunately no longer just applies to plastic bags, household cleaning products and medicines. Today, with the marvel that is the Internet, we not only get the magic but the malicious too. And keeping our children safe just got a whole lot harder. Let’s start with some statistics: 1. 13% of UK 9-16-year-olds say they have been bothered or upset by something online in the past year. 2. Of the children (0-5) who use the Internet, 80% use it at least once a week. 3. One in three teens (12-17) have experienced online harassment. 4. Only 18% of youths use chat rooms. However, the majority of Internet-initiated sex crimes against children are initiated in chat rooms. 5. Almost three in ten parents (29%) let their kids use the Internet without any restrictions or supervision. It’s the last statistic that is perhaps the scariest, just because it’s so easy to protect our children when they are online. The simplest way is to be with them when they use the Internet. Of course, this gets harder as they get older and if you have more than one Internet connected device they have access to. Another method is education. Explaining the dangers of going online, especially into social forums and chat rooms, can open their eyes to what some people are really doing on the Internet.

In addition to supervision and education you also have automatic controls that will help your child to have a safer online experience. There are lots of software options available but here we will look at the in-browser controls that are very simple to activate. Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has several areas that offer parental controls including content (restrictions on language, nudity, sex, and violence), offensive language, and listing approved or blocked websites. To set controls just launch Internet Explorer, select ‘Tools’ from the toolbar, then select ‘Internet Options’, choose the ‘Content’ tab, click ‘Enable’, adjust the slider to select the level you deem appropriate for your child and save your changes. Google Chrome. Initially Chrome was criticised for not having a parental control feature. The latest update now has this built in as part of Google’s Safe Browsing service and there is a beta feature that lets parents create browsing profiles for their kids, allowing them to block websites and keep the SafeSearch filter turned on. Firefox. Firefox has no built-in parental controls, but they do offer an extension called ‘Fox Filter’. This blocks pornographic and inappropriate content for free, but other services require a fee. So if you have children that are accessing the Internet, start with one of these simple tools and keep them safe. For a more extensive list of parental controls software and add-ons visit our site. Station Road Gardens In 2007, Billingshurst Parish Council started discussing what to do with the former football field and cricket field in Station Road following the opening of the sports facilities at Jubilee Fields. A group of Councillors and volunteers have worked since then to create the very popular Station Road Gardens, and the Friends of Station Road Gardens (Billingshurst) Limited was created. Original ideas included landscaping the perimeter, maintaining a green in the middle for families to play, youth shelter, hard path around the edge, park-style railings, arch through to the football field and the banning of dogs. Many of these ideas have come to fruition for the benefit of all of the community. The Parish Council originally agreed to ban dogs from the Gardens, following a close vote in the consultation, but subsequently overturned that decision after community feedback. With the recent installation of the play equipment and more comments from members of the public, the Parish Council has given a grant to the Friends of Station Road Gardens to fence off the barked area around the new play equipment to prevent dogs accessing the area. This seems sensible and is in line with other open areas in the parish which have play areas with fencing around them. However, it has been suggested by the Friends of Station Road Gardens that the Council goes further possibly forcing dogs to be kept on leads or even banning dogs again completely from Station Road Gardens. Labib is not only the director of Bible Society work in the Middle East (overseeing the work of both the Jewish BS and Palestinian BS in Israel/West Bank), he is also a close friend and advisor to the OTRF and a man who (unusually) genuinely carries God’s heart for the region for both Jewish people and Palestinian/Arab people. He describes himself as a Palestinian. Labib’s parents are Jordanians. He was brought up in the Old City of Jerusalem (where his father was a pastor) and lived there for most of his life before moving to live in Amman, Jordan a couple of years ago. He speaks fluent Arabic, Hebrew, English and German. He is a passionate evangelist and loves sharing his faith particularly with Jewish people because, as he says, ‘I get their full attention!’ He and his wife Carolyn are also involved in helping refugees who are fleeing Syria into camps in northern Jordan. So he is a man with his finger on the pulse of what is happening in the region and coupled with his knowledge of the Scriptures he is a man worth hearing! www.olivetreefund.org
